WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th AUGUST 2019
The senior ladies played two games last week and they were two that would define their season. First up was a game away to Ashbourne which they went into hoping for three points in the battle against relegation. Unfortunately it wasn’t a good night as the girls went down 5-1 on a night to forget. On Wednesday night they saw their last chance of silverware slip away in a thrilling five goal encounter with Enniskerry in the semi final of the Intermediate shield. The girls gave it their all in a tough game before losing out 3-2. The girls will now move into the last couple of games hoping to get the positive results required to try pull away from the relegation zone. Aimee Beale and Niamh O'Brien netted for the girls on the night.
In junior action our under 12B's suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat in the second leg of their Division 2 cup quarter final to Avonmore on Tuesday night, losing 7-1 on aggregate. The lads never reached the heights of the first leg but to their credit they battled right up to the final whistle. On Friday night our 14B’s had a great 4-0 home victory over Carnew in the second leg of their premier cup quarter final to win 5-1 on aggregate. Goals from Aaron Murray, an eighth of the season for Ruairi Jenkinson, Peter Dunne and an own goal laid the foundations in the second half of the game after the first period ended scoreless. The 16B’s lost narrowly to Ashford Rovers under 15’s in the quarter final of the under 15/16 challenge cup. In a tight encounter that could have went either way it was Ashford who came out on top. Keelan Vickers hit his second goal of the campaign to register Wicklow’s goal.
On Sunday the 12B’s went down 2-0 to Avonmore at Whitegates, in a game in which the lads will consider themselves a shade unlucky not to get something from as they controlled it for large periods. They were hit with goals in the first and last minutes to earn the away side all three points. Our under 14B’s lost their unbeaten record when they went down 3-2 away to Glencormac United in Ryders Field. The lads rued a series of missed chances and poor defending. Its back to the training ground to regroup and rectify it in their next game. Aaron Murray with his fifth of the season and Ben Bowen with his fourth of the campaign netted for Rovers. The under 15’s lost 4-1 to Coolboy Rangers in the quarter final of the challenge cup. The lads controlled the early part of the game and went in front midway through the half with a neat finish from Ruaidhri Kelly. Coolboy levelled matters against the run of play and then went on to add three quick fire goals to put the game to bed. The lads with better finishing could have made this game a lot closer. Luke Dunne and Ruaidhri Kelly impressed for Rovers on the day.
The club’s AGM will be held on Monday night the 9th of September, the venue is the clubhouse at Whitegates and it will kick off at 7.30pm sharp. All members are requested to arrive on time as meeting will start at 7.30pm sharp, thank you.
With the second half of the season just started we would like to remind members who have outstanding membership fees that these are due now, you can pay your membership online at wicklowrovers.com, to your manager or through any committee member, thank you.
On the odd occasion when a team within our club don’t see a match snippet in our club notes or on our facebook page this is not down to the person writing up the club notes or posting on the facebook page. It’s because the manager hasn’t bothered to pass on the match details. All you are asked for is the result and goalscorers, no match report is required even though it would be appreciated for our facebook page. In fairness this is only the minority as the majority of managers are sending in results, goalscorers and in some cases match reports. We all know it’s a little harder to send in the information when you lose a match but this shouldn’t be the case. Whether you win, lose or draw the match details should be sent in for our club notes by 5pm on the Sunday evening. People are interested in how our teams get on in their games so please forward your match details not just when you win but for every game. This applies to the whole club senior and junior. Unfortunately it’s the same managers week in week out that cause the problem. Please remember we are all volunteers, we have deadlines to meet with the paper and Herald Striker. We cant just keep sitting beside a computer waiting for a manager to reply when contacted for their result so again we request you send in your result and goalscorers asap after the end of your match.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 18th AUGUST 2019

The senior ladies took on Enniskerry for the second time within a week with the result having a similar outcome as the first game. After ninety minutes there was nothing separating the two sides as the game finished 1-1. In what was a tight all county Wicklow affair both sides probably feel they could have won it, but they had to settle for a share of the spoils. Charmaine Higgins hit the Rovers goal on the night.

In junior action the under 12A’s started their shield campaign with a resounding 5-0 victory over Coolboy, the lads put in a five star performance against their opponents. Cian Nolan set them on their way with the first goal, further goals from Finn Dunne, Conor Williams, James Majewski and Senan O’Donovan earned the lads all three points. Senan O’Donovan was nominated as the man of the match in an excellent all round team performance.

We had no competitive action on Saturday so it was on to Sunday. The 12B’s went down 4-1 to Aughrim Rangers in the B final of the under 12 Plate competition. The lads gave it a hundred percent but Aughrim were just too strong on the day. Tom Phelan netted Rovers consolation goal with his first of the season, congratulations to Aughrim. Our under 13’s lost 4-1 to neighbours Rathnew in the A1 Plate final and despite the final score the lads were a shade unlucky on the balance of play. Rovers went 1-0 up after a cracking strike from Eoin Kennedy which was the score at half time. The lads had numerous near misses in the first period to add to their tally while the impressive Rathnew keeper pulled off two great saves. Rathnew levelled matters early in the second half and went on to add three further goals. This was an excellent game of football with very little between the two sides despite the final result, congratulations to Rathnew.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 11th AUGUST 2019

The senior ladies travelled to Berryfield in Enniskerry to take on the local side in the DWSL Division 2 last Wednesday night. This proved to be a tight encounter and it was nothing you wouldn't expect from a local County Wicklow derby. Charmaine Higgins and Niamh O'Brien netted the Rovers goals in a 2-2 stalemate to earn a share of the spoils.

Well the junior action is now some what back into full swing, last Wednesday our under 12A’s started proceedings with a tight 2-1 home win over Shillelagh United. A brace of goals from man of the match Sonny McHale earned the lads all three points in a very entertaining game. Also impressive on the night were Cian Nolan, Conor Williams, Alfie Doyle and Senan O’Donovan. They played a second game on Friday night when they travelled to take on table toppers Enniskerry. After an exciting tussle the lads were a shade unlucky to come out the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat. Enniskerry went one up but the lads levelled when Zach O’Toole found the top right hand corner of the net. Rovers went in front in the second period when Cian Nolan neatly tucked the ball away. Unfortunately for the lads the home side levelled matters and then hit a late winner.

Saturday’s action was washed out after the heavy rain on Friday night. On Sunday the 14B’s defeated Carnew in the premier league winning 5-2, Aaron Murray scored a brace with Charlie Phelan, Eoin Kennedy and Lorcan Sinnott all registering singles in a good all round team performance. A big thanks to under 13 players Eoin Kennedy, Sean O’Toole, Lorcan Sinnott and Evan Conyard for helping out on the day. The 16B’s went down 4-1 away to Glencormac under 15’s in the Challenge Cup, this game was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. The home side just proved to be more clinical in front of goal as Rovers did have their chances. Man of the match Calum Rawl netted for Rovers while Sean Murphy, Mike Gleeson, Jamie Murphy, Ewan Culbert and Ben Larson also impressed on the day.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 4th AUGUST 2019

The senior ladies had two games last week, on Monday night they lost 6-1 at home to Cabinteely, the away side controlled the game for large periods and made their dominance tell on the scoreboard. On Wednesday the girls recorded their first win on the field of play when they beat Ashbourne 2-1 at Whitegates. Niamh O’Brien put the girls one up before Ashbourne equalised. In a second half scarce of few openings the girls were awarded a penalty which Niamh O’Brien neatly tucked away to ensure all three points were staying in Wicklow.

In junior action the under 14B's had an excellent 5-0 home win over Arklow Town in the Rocky Road on Wednesday night. In a five star performance from the lads they turned in a fantastic all round team performance. The defence were rock solid throughout while the midfield got through some industrious work around the park. Up front Rovers were clinical in front of goal. Adam Byrne hit a brace with Aaron Murray, Tom Phelan and Ben Bowen firing home singles. On Thursday night our under 15's had an excellent win in their under 15 Challenge Cup semi-final when they defeated Carnew 3-1 at Whitegates. A brace of goals from Aaron Laughlin and a single from Robert Cherry laid the foundations for this good victory. This was a fantastic all round team performance with everyone playing their part. Well if it's goals and excitement you wanted the Whitegates was the place to be Saturday morning. Our 12B's entertained Sporting Greystones in the under 12 A3 Shield and what a thrilling game the supporters were treated to. This game had everything to keep the watching public on the edge of their seats. Greystones drew first blood when they went in front but Millie Phelan produced a neat finish from a tight angle to make it 1-1. Jack Lambe then put Rovers 2-1 up and shortly afterwards things got even better for Rovers when Filip Stypula fired home to make it 3-1 and put Rovers in the driving seat. The away team however came roaring back with three unanswered goals to hit the front 4-3. This topsy turvy game wasn't finished with the goals as Rovers showed great character to level matter ten minutes from time when Jack Lambe found the net with a screamer to make it 4-4. Rovers continued to push forward in search of a winner and were cruelly denied in the dying seconds when Callum Hodgkinson could only watch as his goal bound effort agonisingly rattled the post and bounced to safety. All in all, even though the game ended in a 4-4 draw both sides proved to be winners as the players and their coaches produced an entertaining open game of football. Well done to everyone involved with both teams.
