WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 8th JANUARY 2012

The first team returned to league action at the weekend when they entertained Glebe North at The Whitegates, their last league fixture was way back on the 19th of November which resulted in their first defeat of the season but they have been unbeaten in cup competition since then. On Saturday they claimed a valuable three points with an impressive 3-0 win to move into third place in the league and to close within five points of leaders Bangor Celtic with five games in hand. Shane Cassidy who has five cup goals to his credit this season notched his first league goals of the season when he netted a brace, Ian Brannigan scored from the penalty spot for his second of the season. This was a good all round team performance and a very important victory which  keeps them in touch with the leaders.
Our second team returned to action and recorded a 1-1 draw with BBK Utd, Aidan Small scored from the penalty spot to earn them a share of the spoils which keeps them in the chase for a top four finish in their first season back in the premier division.
Both the third and youths teams had no games at the weekend.
In the coming weeks the first team have two big cup games, they travel to Tipperary to take on one of the pre tournament favourites St Michaels [last seasons beaten finalists] in  the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup and then they entertain Dundrum Celtic at home in the last 32 of the Leinster Junior Cup, the club would like to wish the team the best of luck in both games.
The junior sides within the club should be back in full swing in the next week or two, hopefully the good weather over the last couple of weeks will hold up and we all get a good run of games.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 15th JANUARY 2012

The first team made the long journey to Tipperary to take on last years beaten finalists St Michaels in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup, last year the lads played the same opposition in the last 16 and didn’t do themselves justice when they were defeated comprehensively. This time it was completely different and even though the lads lost narrowly by a score line of 2-1 they were more than a match for their opponents. Even when they fell behind and also lost influential midfielder Greg Dunne through injury, the spirit of this team saw them claw themselves back into the game and draw level when Shane Cassidy scored for the third successive game. From this point the game could have went either way with both sides having chances, with ten minutes to go St Michaels scored what proved to be the decisive goal. The lads can be proud of their performance against one of the country’s top junior sides and hopefully it will give them the confidence to push on in the league and the Leinster Junior Cup, well done lads. Everyone in the club would like to wish Greg Dunne a speedy recovery from a bad injury he picked up in the match, get well soon Greg.
The lads are back in National Cup  action next week when they entertain fellow Leinster Senior League side Dundrum Athletic next Saturday afternoon in the last 32 of the Leinster Junior Cup, kick off is 2 pm and all support would be welcome. If you have time next Saturday please come along to the Whitegates to cheer on this very young side and hopefully see them progress into the last 16.
Both the second and third teams were involved in second round Wicklow Cup action at the weekend and they had mixed fortunes. The second team had an excellent win away to Glenview FC in an all premier clash, goals from Kevin Coady, Mark O’Sullivan, Aidan O’Neill and Neil Doyle gave Tom Doyle’s charges a fantastic 4-0 victory and safe passage to the last 16.
The thirds travelled to Shillelagh to take on high flying Celtic Stars and went down on a 4-2 score line, Jay Waters and Andy Jameson hit the goals in a close encounter. The thirds are due to play the same opposition again next week in their divisional cup.
Our youths were away to Terenure FC in their first game back after the Christmas break and they defeated their hosts by three goals to two to claim all three points, leading scorer Cian Verney notched his eighth of the season, James Kavanagh is hot on his heels when he scored his seventh for the season while Dylan Corry scored his first goal of the season to complete their tally.
The junior sides within the club will be back in full swing next week, hopefully the good weather over the last couple of weeks will hold up and we all get a good run of games. The executive committee would like to wish all our junior players, managers and coaches the best of luck for the remainder of the season, enjoy your football.
Our soccer academy has resumed after the Christmas break, it is on every Saturday morning [weather permitting] in the Whitegates all weather pitch at 11 o’clock, so for fun and games while learning the skills of the game come to the Whitegates from 11 till 12 under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne. The academy is open to boys and girls from the age of three upwards.
Club gear is available from our club shop, if anyone wishes to purchase club gear you can contact Franny Copeland at 0872230063 or email him at

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 22nd JANUARY 2012

The first team were in Leister Junior Cup action on Saturday afternoon, they took on Dundrum FC in the last 16 but unfortunately they didn’t perform to the high standard they have set themselves. They lost out on a 2-0 score line and now its back to the league action were they are in the running for the title. They currently are eight points behind league leaders Bangor Celtic with six games in hand so they will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the league.
The second team took on local rivals Wicklow Town at the weekend, it was a tough but fair encounter with both teams giving a hundred percent, the Town took the lead just before the break. The lads levelled the match ten minutes into the second period when Aidan Small slotted home from the penalty spot. At this point the lads had a period of pressure but failed to take two excellent chances that came their way and they were made to pay. With fourteen minutes left on the clock a defensive error gifted last years champions the lead, the Town added a third with five minutes remaining. Both teams were fully committed in a highly entertaining match.
The thirds took on Celtic Stars in the quarter final of the Thomas Scott Cup, the same opponents knocked them out of the Wicklow Cup last week. After a tight game with both defences on top through out neither side managed to breach their opponents defences with the game finishing 0-0 after extra time. On to the dreaded penalties and the lads were unlucky to lose out 4 penalties to 3.
Our youths continued their good form when they defeated Shankill FC away in a seven goal thriller winning 4-3. Ryan Bloomfield hit the back of the net three times and James Kavanagh added a single. This result keeps them in the mix at the top end of the league.
The under 11 girls team continued their good run when they were victorious for the fourth successive game, this time they comprehensively defeated St Josephs 10-2. Niamh Caffrey hit an excellent hat-trick to take her tally to thirteen for the season, the astonishing thing is all her goals have come in the last three matches, Emer McNulty and Lucy Dunne both helped themselves to a brace a piece while Michaela Dickenson and Sarah Evans added singles to complete the ten goal haul.
The under 13 girls made it eight wins from eight games when they defeated Park Celtic 2-0, Eve Christie and Aine Cahill scored the all important goals to preserve the team’s hundred percent record and for the seventh time this season the team recorded a clean sheet.
Our under 15 girls team won 4-2 away to Leixlip Utd, leading scorer Ami Collier hit a brace to take her total to nine for the season while Kayleigh Sullivan and Clodagh Fox both scored one a piece to claim an excellent three points away from home.
Two players made the hat-trick club this week, Ryan Bloomfield hit the back of the net three times for the youths in their thrilling 4-3 away win to Shankill FC while Niamh Caffrey scored her hat-trick for the under 11 girls in their 10-2 victory over St Josephs, well done Niamh and Ryan.
Our junior soccer academy is on every Saturday morning [weather permitting] in the Whitegates all weather pitch at 11 o’clock, so for fun and games while learning the skills of the game come to the Whitegates from 11 till 12 under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne. The academy is open to boys and girls from the age of three upwards.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Mary Turner who sadly passed away recently, our thoughts are with you all at this sad time, may she rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 29th JANUARY 2012

The first team got back to winning ways when they resumed league action at the weekend, they entertained Belgrove last Saturday afternoon in the Whitegates and claimed all three points in a 2-1 victory. Darragh O’Donnell and Paul O’Neill scored the all important goals in a victory which moves the lads into fourth spot in the league and well in contention for the title. They now sit eight points behind leaders Bangor Celtic with five games in hand. They also have games in hand on second and third placed teams Tolka Rovers and Dublin Bus.
The second and youths teams saw their games become victims of the bad weather while the thirds were not down for a fixture.
There was only action for one of our girls teams at the weekend and that was the under 11’s, unfortunately they were comprehensively beaten by a very strong Enniskerry side in the second round of the cup, Jessica Lyons scored their lone goal.
The under 13’s girls game fell foul of the weather while the under 15’s received a walkover from Maynooth Town to progress to the third round of the cup.
On the schoolboys/girls section there was also limited action due to no allocated fixtures and other games falling to the bad weather. Our under 12A’s recorded a 6-1 away win against Enniskerry A, Eli Graham netted a splendid hat-trick while Luca Rampersaud, Patrick O’Keane and Ronan Murray all added singles. The 12B’s took all three points in an excellent away victory over Arklow Town B, Stuart Morgan and James Dean both scored two a piece in a 4-2 win. Our under 13B’s lost 8-2 at home to Wolfe Tone, they put up a great show in the first half when the trailed 3-2 at the break only for the away side to prove stronger in the second half. The highlight for the team was a brace of goals from Harrison Okungowhe.  The under 14A’s went down 3-2 away to Arklow Town A with Adam Copeland scoring a brace to bring his tally to seven for the season.
Wicklow Rovers AFC promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and seniors in the community, our club is growing all the time and any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated. With the limited amount of games at the weekend we only had the one player in the hat-trick club this week and that honour fell to under 12A player Eli Graham who hit an excellent three goals away to Enniskerry A in his side’s 6-1 victory, well done Eli.
Our junior soccer academy is on every Saturday morning [weather permitting] in the Whitegates all weather pitch at 11 o’clock, so for fun and games while learning the skills of the game come to the Whitegates from 11 till 12 under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th FEBRUARY 2012

The first team took on Cherry Orchard at the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon, their opponents are the only team to defeat the lads in league action this season so far. On a day when conditions were not ideal for football it was the visitors who were first to threaten, in a first half of limited chances it was the Orchard who went in front when they converted one of the very few clear cut chances to go in at the break one nil up. The second half saw the lads get forward more without testing the away keeper but all the time the away side looked dangerous on the break. With thirteen minutes remaining on the clock second half substitute Ken Doyle swung in an excellent cross from the right wing which Paul O’Neill squared to Darragh O’Donnell who slotted home the equaliser. In a tight game the lads had two excellent chances in the dying minutes but both Luke Byrne and Jim Foley were denied. This was a good point from a game which at one stage looked like drifting away from them.
The premier team had no game while the third team suffered a disappointing 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Roundwood with Jonathan Dunne scoring the goal. Our youths went down 3-1 to Rathnew, Ryan Bloomfield scoring the goal.
The under 11 girls received a walkover from Cloghertown Utd. The 13’s made it nine wins from nine games when they defeated Balrath 4-0, Rioghna McGettigan brought her tally for the season to seven when she netted a brace while Kate Hennessy and Eve Christie added singles to retain their one hundred percent record. The under 15 girls match was cancelled.
Everyone at the club would like to congratulate former player Davy O’Sullivan on being short listed for the honour of Ireland’s junior player of the year, Davy has been nominated in the final three and has being invited to attend the FAI International Awards on Sunday the 26 th February, the awards banquet will be televised live from RTE Studios in Donnybrook that evening starting at 6pm. His performances with the club in last season’s FAI and Leinster Junior cups saw him gain an international call up to the Republic of Ireland junior side where he went on to be one of the key figures in the Irish team’s magnificent journey in the European Regions Championship in Portugal. He played a major part in helping the team reach the final, scoring a couple of goals on the way. On route to the final they drew with Turkey while defeating both Serbia and Russia, incidentally it was Davy’s winning goal against Russia which saw them progress to the final where they were unlucky to lose out to hosts Portugal. This is a great achievement and recognition of a lot of hard work from Davy. Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish you the best of luck on the night while also congratulating you on your nomination, this is a truly well deserved honour for a player who turned in excellent performances week in week out for club and country, well done Davy from everyone at Wicklow Rovers.
We had one player in the hat-trick club this week and what a performance it was, Eoin McAulay hit an excellent double hat-trick for the under 14A’s in their 9-0 win at home to St Anthonys, six goals in one game was a great achievement, well done Eoin.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Frank Marron who sadly passed away recently, our thoughts are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th FEBRUARY ‘12

Well it wasn’t a good weekend for action on the playing front with the weather proving to be the winner, the first team’s match away to Phoenix FC on Friday night did manage to get played and the lads secured all three points with a valuable 2-1 victory. In a good solid team performance Paul O’Neill bagged a brace to bring his tally to eight for the season and ensured they keep the pressure on Tolka Rovers and Bangor Celtic who are above them in the league. This result means they are now four points behind league leaders Bangor Celtic with four games in hand and three points behind second placed Tolka Rovers with three games in hand.
The only other game to escape the weather in the club was the under 9C’s match away to Arklow United and what a game it was, the lads came out the right side in a nine goal thriller winning 5-4. Christopher Bouchier hit a magnificent hat-trick [his third hat-trick of the season] to bring his tally to nineteen for the season and Sam Brown added a brace in a splendid game of football.
As you can see from above we had one player in the hat-trick club this week and that honour fell to Christopher Bouchier who notched his third hat-trick of the season for the under 9C’s in their 5-4 away win against Arklow United, this brings his total to nineteen for the season, well done Christopher.
The club recently won a new set of jerseys in a draw sponsored by The Star newspaper, anyone who was collecting master heads from the paper for the club can hand them in to any committee member, alternatively you can give them to any team manager in the club, the master heads have to be returned by Wednesday [today] the 15th February as there is a deadline to claim the jerseys, a big thanks to everyone for your help.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th FEBRUARY ‘12

The first team took on Crumlin United at the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon in what was a crucial clash between two inform sides with both sides having their sights set firmly on the title. Even though the away side had the better clear cut chances in the first period it was Rovers who went in at the break leading by a goal to nil. The all important goal was a cracker from Luke Byrne after only four minutes. Things got even better two minutes after the break when Luke Byrne hit a screamer from the edge of the area to make it 2-0. In the fifty third minute Rovers conceded a sloppy goal to let the visitors back in the game and thing got worse two minutes later when the ref awarded what looked a soft penalty which Crumlin converted despite the initial kick been saved by Arthur Delahunt. Crumlin were on top at this point but the introduction of Ken Doyle and Greg Dunne seem to give Rovers a new lease of life. Rovers added two goals in the final ten minutes, Shane Cassidy got his ninth goal of the season when he headed home from a corner while Luke Byrne completed his hat-trick when he got on the end of a long throw from Ken Doyle to lob the advancing keeper to seal the three points. Arthur Delahunt, Paul Alexander, Shane Cassidy and Luke Byrne were all impressive in a game which Rovers never reached the high standard they have set for themselves. Taking everything into account and the strong visitors side this hopefully will prove to be a valuable three points come the end of the season, the lads leapfrogged Crumlin in the table to go into second place a point behind leaders Bangor Celtic with three games in hand, [see club website for full match report].
The second team were convincingly defeated by our neighbours Wicklow Town in the quarter final of the Premier Shield losing out on a 3-0 score line, good luck to the Town in the semi final.
Our third team hit six past Ballywaltrim FC in a 6-2 home win, Paddy Clarke hit his second hat-trick of the season to bring his total to fourteen for the season while Liam Theobald, Jay Waters and John Flood all added singles.
Our youths side took on league and cup favourites Arklow Town away in the first round of the cup, they put in a great performance and can count themselves unlucky to lose out by the odd goal in a five goal thriller. James Kavanagh notched his ninth of the season and Simon Bouchier hit his first goal since returning to the club to account for Rovers goals.
Our three girls teams were in action over the weekend, the under 11’s defeated Enniskerry by a score of 4-1 with Jessica Lyons hitting a hat-trick and Sarah Evans scoring the other. The under 13’s lost 5-1 to Shelbourne with Eleanor Dunne scoring their lone goal. The under 15’s had a great win against Properous FC winning 6-0, Chloe Brennan notched a superb hat-trick, Alicia O’Rourke scored a brace while Jade Manley netted a single.
There was five players in the hat-trick club this week, first up was Luke Byrne who hit three wonderful strikes for the first team in their 4-2 win against Crumlin Utd in a top of the table clash, next up was Conor Hunter who netted three against Greystones Utd B for the under 9B’s, Paddy Clarke fired his hat-trick for the third team in their 6-2 victory over Ballywaltrim. Two girls hit hat-tricks at the weekend, Jessica Lyons scored three for the  under 11’s in their 4-1 win away to Enniskerry and Chloe Brennan  hit the back of the net three times for the under 15’s in their 6-0 win over Properous FC, well done Luke, Conor, Paddy, Jessica and Chloe.
A small minority of players within the club have still to pay their club membership, as the membership is long overdue and all players concerned have been approached on several occasions as well as ten registration nights been held prior to Christmas we think as a club we have been more than fair and understanding. As you can appreciate we have a small committee and our resources could be of more benefit to the club than constantly pursuing unpaid membership, if you are one of those players who haven’t paid their membership the club would be grateful if you would contact any committee member regarding this issue as soon as possible. The committee will hold a meeting at the end of the month to discuss the next course of action.
The club would like to thank all the people who recently collected tokens from the Daily Star for the club to receive a new set of jerseys which we won as the result of a nation wide competion, we should receive the jerseys in the next few weeks, many thanks again.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th FEBRUARY ‘12

The first team took on Belgrove in the first round of the Lanigan Cup on Saturday at the Whitegates, this was always going to be a tough tie as the visitors have won this trophy for the last two years. It was Belgrove who got off to a flyer when they took the lead in the ninth minute, Rovers replied immediately when Paul O’Neill equalised four minutes later for his ninth goal of the season. The remainder of the half was tight with very few clear cut chances. The lads stepped up the pace in the second period and created chance after chance. In the fifty ninth minute Luke Byrne fired home a spectacular effort from the edge of the area to put Rovers 2-1 up and what in the end proved to be the winner. With the amount of chances they created in the second half the lads should have made this a lot easier for themselves but the main thing is they have progressed to round two. Full match report on club website.
Our second team were away to Newtown Utd B in the first round of the Bishop Cup, the lads put in a solid team performance to record a 3-1 win in what was a potential banana skin, goals from Darren Kane, Kevin Coady and David Condron ensured a safe passage to the second round for Tom Doyle’s charges.
The third team were unlucky to bow out of the Bishop Cup when the lost out to Conary Utd, nothing could separate the two teams after ninety minutes and after extra time both sides remained deadlocked, the game ended 2-2 with Jason Waters scoring both Rovers goals. The lads eventually lost out by a score of 4-2 in the dreaded penalty shootout.
All three girls teams were in action over the weekend, firstly the under 11’s went down 6-2 to a strong Terenure team, Amy Kavanagh notched a brace for her first goals of the season. The under 13’s lost 2-0 at home to Ratoath which is only their second defeat in the league from eleven games, winning the other nine. The under 15’s travelled to Maynooth and came home with a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw to extend their unbeaten run to five games, Jade Manley hit the back of the net for the second successive game for her third goal of the season while Amy Healy scored her first of the season to earn them a point.
Congratulations to our under 12A’s, 12B’s,14A’s and 16A’s on winning in their respective cup semi finals over the weekend, the 12A’s had an excellent 4-0 away win over Greystones Utd A, the 12B’s defeated Arklow Town B 4-2 in the Whitegates, our 14A’s recorded a comfortable 7-0 victory away to Greystones Utd A while the 16A’s beat the 16B’s 3-1 at the Whitegates, good luck to you all in the finals. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 4th MARCH 2012

The first team had a set back in their quest for the title when they crashed to a heavy defeat away to one of their title rivals Tolka Rovers. They lost out on a 4-0 score line and it was a game they never got going in, they are still well in the hunt for the league lying in fourth place three points behind new leaders Tolka with four games in hand. Crumlin are two points ahead playing three games more while Bangor are third a point ahead but having played two games more so it is still in the lads own hands but the margin for error is getting slimmer.
Our premier team took on Fassaroe YC away in the second round of the Bishop Cup and came away with a solid 2-0 win, leading scorer Aidan Small set them on their way with his eighth of the season and Sean Tobin notched the second to safely see them through to round three.
The third team went down 3-2 away to Charlesland AFC, first team coach James Macklin scored the first with Craig Jameson getting the second. The youths game was off.
The hat-trick club was over flowing with contributors this week with no fewer than six players in the club hitting the back of the net three times. First up was Leo DeCourcy who netted three excellent goals for the under 8B’s in their 3-2 home win over Ardmore Rovers E. Next we had Shane Devlin and Rian Dwyer who both play for the 13A’s hitting three a piece in their sides comprehensive 12-0 win away to Avonmore as they chase the division one title. Colin O’Toole scored three for the 14A’s as they battle for the premier title in their 8-0 home victory over Greystones United A. In the same league Rian Sweetman Burke hit his hat-trick against Arklow United but his side were unlucky to lose 4-3. Finally Kieran Bloomfield notched his third hat-trick of the season for the 15A’s as they won 6-0 in their final league game away to Arklow Town A and finish as runners up in the premier for the second successive season, well done to Leo, Shane, Rian, Colin, Rian and Kieran.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 11th MARCH 2012

After last weeks disappointing result the first team got their assault on the title back on track, they entertained Bluebell Utd at the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon and recorded a 2-1 victory. Gareth Murphy set them on their way with an early goal and then Luke Byrne hit a cracker from the edge of the area to make it 2-0 which they held to the break, the visitors were reduced to ten men just before the interval. Twenty minutes into the second period Bluebell had another player dismissed but this only seem to spur them on and they pulled a goal back to make the closing stages uneasy for the home side but in truth the lads had a couple of chances to put the game totally beyond the visitors. After this result they move up to third in the league ahead of long time leaders Bangor Celtic. Tolka Rovers lead the way on 33 points from 18 games, Crumlin Utd are second on 32 points from 17 games and then the lads on 30 points from 14 games.
The second team had no game at the weekend. The third team travelled to take on Aughrim Rangers who were a point behind them in the table, a goal a piece from Jay Waters and Sean Tobin gave them a 2-0 win but it was the outstanding performance by second team manager Tom Doyle as a stand in keeper which was the talking point of this game, he pulled off some excellent saves to earn the man of the match and his display went a big way to securing all three points.
Our under 15 girls team were not involved in action at the weekend but the under 11’s and 13’s both played with both matches ending in draws, first the 11’s earned a share of the spoils with Shankill FC in a 1-1 draw with Niamh Caffrey notching her fourteenth goal of the season. The under 13’s took on Shelbourne who they lost out to on a score line of 5-1 a couple of weeks ago but this time it was totally different. As scoreless draws go this was one of the most entertaining you would see, it was end to end with both teams giving a hundred percent, a cracking game by all accounts and a well deserved result for the girls.
Congratulations to our under 13A team who won the division one title at the weekend, they defeated Wolfe Tone B 5-0 away on Saturday, Shane Devlin hit a splendid hat-trick and Matthew Traynor added a brace to claim all three points to secure the title. Their record read played 12, won 10 [including 2 walkovers against Roundwood], drew 1 and lost 1, they scored 50 goals and conceded 11, once again congratulations and well done to Rene, Mark and the lads.
Only one player in the hat-trick club this week and what an important one it was, Shane Devlin netted three times away to Wolfe Tone B for the under 13A’s in a 5-0 win which secured them the division one title, congratulations Shane.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th MARCH 2012

The first team suffered a narrow defeat away to one of their title rivals Bangor Celtic at the weekend, in a close encounter it was the Dublin side that came out on top by one goal to nil. It shows how close this league is when Bangor who were in fourth place prior to the game jumped to the top of the table as a result of this win. One of our other rivals Tolka Rovers also lost at the weekend The last few weeks of the season are going to be exciting and every game will be very important with any of the top four capable of winning the league. The table now reads Bangor Celtic 34 points from 18 games; Tolka Rovers 33 points from 19 games; Wicklow Rovers 33 points from 16 games and Crumlin United 32 points from 17 games.
The second team made a disappointing exit from the Wicklow Cup when they went down 1-0 at home to Arklow Town B.
The youths lost 3-1 away to Blessington with Evan O’Meara getting the lone goal.
In girls soccer, the under 11’s had no game while the under 13’s earned a very good point away to Ratoath in a 1-1 draw. They lost 2-0 at home to the same opposition a couple of weeks ago so this would have been a good result with Kate Hennessy getting the all important goal. An under strength under 15 team went down 4-1 in the second round of the Irish Rail Cup to Templeogue, Kayleigh Sullivan scored the Rovers goal.
As everyone knows one of the most prestige competitions in schoolboy soccer is the Kennedy Cup, early on in the season trials for the under 14 county team got underway and have been ongoing ever since all the way through the winter months. In the last week the squad of twenty was finalised to represent the county and its great news for the club that we had four players selected. Adam Copeland, Eoin McAulay, Oisin Daunt Smyth and Hugh Humby have to be congratulated on their selection, its an honour for them, their parents and the club. The club would like to take this chance to wish all four players the best of luck when the competition comes round and congratulations once again. To all the other players who just missed out keep the head up, train hard and keep performing week in, week out as you never know when an opportunity might a rise to gain another chance.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st APRIL 2012

The first team moved into second place in the league at the weekend when they drew 1-1 with Wayside Celtic but in truth they should have claimed all three points, they led 1-0 going into the dying seconds when they conceded the equaliser. In a game of very few clear cut chances the lads took the lead early in the second half when Dara Verney coolly slotted the ball home. Rovers were in control of the game at this stage with Greg Dunne and Paul O’Neill impressive through out but then with a couple of minutes left on the clock the lads failed to clear the ball in their own six yard box and the ball was deflected over the line for the equaliser. This result leaves them in second place three points behind leaders Bangor Celtic with two games in hand.
The seconds took on neighbours Wicklow Town in the quarter finals of the Bishop Cup and were unlucky to lose out on a dreaded penalty shootout, the game ended 1-1 after extra time with David Rowan scoring the goal.
The third team defeated Seaview Wanderers by two goals to one with Jim Foley and Niall O’Rourke netting the goals while the under 18’s drew 2-2 away to Ardmore Rovers with Cian Verney and James Kavanagh hitting the back of the net.
The under 11 girls went down 5-2 to Terenure, Amy Kavanagh doubled her season’s tally notching a brace to take her tally to four for the season. The under 13’s had a comprehensive 12-0 win against Maynooth Town, the stand out performance in this game was an outstanding double hat-trick from Rioghna McGettigan to take her total to nineteen for the season, Tess Haskins scored a brace while Eve Christie, Clarisse Broughan, Kate Hennessy and Eleanor Dunne all scored singles to complete the twelve goal haul.
We had two players in the hat-trick club this week and that honour fell to Niall Donnelly who netted a brilliant three goals for the under 16A team in their nine goal thriller with Wolfe Tone in the premier shield which they won on a 5-4 score line but the performance of the week came from Rioghna McGettigan who netted an amazing double hat-trick for the under 13 girls in their 12-0 victory over Maynooth Town, Rioghna’s excellent six goal haul took her total for the season to nineteen, well done Niall and Rioghna.

Mark O’Sullivan notched his fourth goal of the season to earn them a point.
The third team had a fantastic win against league leaders Ashford Rovers at the Whitegates on Sunday, they claimed all three points with a very good 3-1 victory. Sean Tobin set them on their way before Paddy Clarke fired home his fifteenth of the season, Jonathan Dunne netted the third in a good all round team performance. The youths and first team had no games at the weekend.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 15th APRIL 2012

The first team travelled to take on Mount Merrion last Saturday and were unlucky not to claim all three points, leading 2-1 going into the dying minutes they conceded a late equaliser. Ian Brannigan scored Rovers first goal with leading scorer Shane Cassidy firing home the second for his eleventh of the season. It is as you were at the top with leaders Bangor Celtic also been held to a draw, Crumlin dropped points when they lost at home to bottom of the table Belgrove. With four games remaining the lads are in second place three points behind with two games in hand.
The second team lost out to title chasing Arklow Town last week on a 3-2 score line, on the night luck didn’t go their way. Darren Pierce and Ken Doyle scored the goals.
The under 18’s lost to Arklow Town on a 1-0 score line.
The under 13 girls drew 2-2 with Balbriggan FC, leading scorer Rioghna McGettigan hit her fourteenth goal of the season and Eleanor Dunne notched her third to earn them a share of the spoils. The under 15 girls narrowly lost at home to Broadford by one goal to nil.
In the hat-trick club this week we had Glen Broughan who scored his second hat-trick of the season for the under 8A’s against Enniskerry in a 10-3 win, in the same game Conor Luddy also hit three goals while Keith Carty nabbed three for the under 11A’s in their 6-3 cup defeat to Ardmore Rovers A. Well done Glen, Conor and Keith.
As we all know it is easy to turn out week in week out when your winning but cast a thought to the teams who turn out week after week and are soundly defeated, well I think this week in our club notes a special mention has to go to our under 13B team, week after week this team have been well beaten suffering some heavy defeats on the way. Their enthusiasm and spirit for the game has never faltered, in their previous fifteen games they never registered a victory or even a draw but they still turn out for training and matches and all their hard work was rewarded last Tuesday night when they recorded their first victory of the season, they defeated Ashford Rovers 5-0 with a brace of goals from James Lewins and singles from Tiernan O’Neill, Harry Curley and Ben Griffin. A lot of credit has to be given to this group of players for their commitment in turning out every week, also with the constant encouragement from manager Rob O’Neill and his assistants Gordon Bradshaw and Gerry Lewins this team well deserved a change of fortune. The work Rob, Gordon and Gerry are doing with the team has been excellent. Well done Rob, Gordon, Gerry and the lads.

Our two U14 Teams went on a 3-day trip to Manchester over the Easter period and enjoyed the experience immensely. On day one they competed in the Liverpool Easter Tournament against sides from Cork and Dublin, both sides topped their respective groups with the ‘A’ team  defeating the B’s in the final, day two saw both teams take part in a training session at the Manchester City Youth Academy and then go to Goodison Park to attend the Premier League match between Everton and Sunderland and day three saw both teams attend a Tour of the famous Old Trafford stadium which they all loved. A great time was had by all and all the lads did their Club proud.
All last week saw the club run their first ever Easter Soccer Camp and what a success it was with over 90 kids from the age of five upwards attending the camp, also there was a separate girls section for the first time and this was very well attended with 32 girls taking part. Everyone had an enjoyable time and the weather was kind to us with the sun shinning on us all week with just the odd shower. From a personnel point I would like to thank the following people for making the week such a success, a massive thanks to Catriona Nolan, John Frazer, Paul Delaney, Johnny Dunne, Brendan Porter, John Gerard McGettigan, Dave Fitzgerald, Josephine Delahoyde, Ruth Algera, Willie O’Brien, Ciaran McGettigan, James Nolan junior, Jack Frazer, Chris Delaney, John Porter and Joe Neilan.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 22nd APRIL 2012

The first team took on Wayside Celtic in the second round of the Lanigan Cup at the weekend. After a scoreless ninety minutes the game went to extra time, in a game which saw both defences on top through out and clear cut chances at a premium, it always seemed to be destined for penalties. They had Arthur Delahunt to thank for sending the game to penalties, in the dying minutes he tipped the ball onto the post and just when it seemed the Wayside player was going to score he took the ball off his foot. Arthur again proved to be the hero in the shootout, he stepped up to slot the first penalty home and then save Wayside’s first two spot kicks. Successful spot kicks from Jim Foley, BA Franey and Luke Byrne saw them win 4-2 on penalties.
The second team recorded two wins in the last week, goals from Aidan O’Neill, Paddy Clarke and Neil Doyle saw them defeat Enniskerry 3-2 last Tuesday and on Sunday they beat Arklow Celtic 4-1 with a brace from Ian Brannigan and singles from Paddy Clarke and Darren Pierce.
The thirds put themselves back in contention for a top four spot with a 1-0 win over Enniskerry, Liam Theobald scored the all important goal.
We had three players who hit hat-tricks this week, first Glen McCarthy topped an impressive display with a splendid three goals for the 15A’s in their 4-0 win over Arklow Town B, then it was Fergus Ward who notched three for the 16B’s in their 5-5 draw against Wolfe Tone, finally Eoin McAulay fired in his hat-trick in the 14A’s 7-2 win over Arklow Utd, well done Glen, Fergus and Eoin.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 29th APRIL 2012

The first team gained a share of the spoils away to Bluebell last week, Luke Byrne scored the all important goal in a 1-1 draw. What it means now is that the lads still have it in their own hands but there’s very little room for error at this stage. The situation now is with three games left, [two at home and one away] if they claim maximum points from the three games they will win the league no matter what happens elsewhere. It’s a tough assignment but not an impossible one. They are also still in the Lanigan Cup where they have been drawing away to Malahide United in the quarter final. Everyone at the club would like to wish the lads the best of luck in both competitions.
Due to the bad weather last week the second team’s game was cancelled while the thirds and youths had no games.
Congratulations to our under 14A team who added the cup to the league title they already won, a brace of goals from top scorer Eoin McAulay and one from Adam Copeland saw them defeat Arklow United 3-1 in Rathnew on Sunday morning, once again congratulations Stephen, Willie, Franny and the lads.
Also congratulations to Neill, Roger and the under 16A team on their cup success against Arklow Town A in Rathnew on Sunday afternoon, with the game scoreless Sean Vickers was sprung from the bench and with his first touch he scored the all important goal to lift the trophy to make it a league and cup double with the shield to play for.
Only recently we were congratulating Rob, Gordon and the 13B’s on gaining their first victory of the season, well they done it again at the weekend, they defeated Arklow United on Sunday by a score of 3-2, two goals from Leigh Cleere and a single from Harry Curley saw this ever improving team get their just rewards, well done lads.
We had two players in the hat-trick club this week, first up was Rob Mitchell who fired home three goals for the 11C’s in his sides 3-2 away win in the shield against Shamrock Bhoys. Next was Aaron Murphy who netted three time for the 8A’s in their 3-1 win in their local derby against Rathnew, well done Rob and Aaron.
Our club website is going through a period of transition at the moment so we hope everyone will keep logging on during this period. Rene Algera who has been maintaining our website over the last few years has stepped down, everyone at Wicklow Rovers would like to thank Rene for all his hard work in updating our website over this period, it was down to him that the club has made progress in this area and it is hoped to carry on his good work. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 6th MAY 2012

The first team had two games in the last week, first up was Malahide United away in the quarter final of the Lanigan Cup and the lads were disappointed to lose out on a 2-0 score line after controlling the game for long periods. This was a game of missed opportunities, a game the lads should have won but at the end of the day you have to take your chances when they come along. The team suffered a couple of  bad injuries in this game, everyone at the club would like to wish Arthur Delahunt and Luke Byrne a speedy recovery. Next up was Mount Merrion at the Whitegates on Saturday in a must win game with things so tight at the top of the league. The lads were well up for the game on they put their opponents under pressure from the start, Paul O’Neill put them on their way with a well taken goal and shortly after Ken Doyle made it 2-0 when he finished off a fine move involving Stephen Earls, Paul O’Neill and Gareth Murphy. They had several chances to get a third but it didn’t come till late on when Paul O’Neill nabbed his second of the match to make it 3-0. This win puts them into second place two points behind leaders Bangor Celtic and one point ahead of third placed Crumlin Utd. Bangor have one game left which is against third placed Crumlin while the lads have two games left, at home to Tolka Rovers and away to Dublin Bus. Any one of the three teams can still win the league but if the lads can claim six points from their two games the title will be there’s. The best of luck lads.
Our under 11 girls were at home to Shankill at the weekend and goals from Sinead McGettigan, Emer McNulty, Jessica Lyons and Sarah Evans saw them win 4-0. The under 15 girls were involved in a seven goal thriller at the Whitegates on Sunday and they were unlucky to come out the wrong side of a 4-3 score line against St John Bosco. Ami Collier bagged her tenth and eleventh goals of the season with a brace with Chloe Brennan scoring the third.
Our soccer academy is on every Saturday morning [weather permitting] in the Whitegates all weather pitch at 11 o’clock, so for fun and games while learning the skills of the game come to the Whitegates from 11 till 12 under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 13th MAY 2012

The first team went into their match at the weekend knowing that three points were a must if they wanted to keep their title hopes alive, six points from their last two games was the requirement to win the league. The first game was at home to Tolka Rovers in the Whitegates on Saturday and they got off to a dream start when after a fine move on the right Ian Brannigan provided a neat finish to put the lads one up on twenty minutes. The first half saw the lads well in control, they went into the break at 1-0 but disaster struck early in the second half when the visitors equalised. This only seemed to spur the lads on and they got their rewards when Ken Doyle coolly slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner to restore their lead. A few minutes later Rovers were reduced to ten men and this gave Tolka some encouragement, even though they were down to ten men it was Rovers who went closest to scoring, Paul O’Neill, Andy Broe and Gareth Murphy all had chances. The impressive Shane Cassidy thundered a shot against the underside of the crossbar. The ten men were excellent as they gave every ounce of energy and sweat to gain the three points. Stephen Earls, Paul Alexander, Shane Cassidy, Greg Dunne and Paul O’Neill led by example in a good all round team performance. The situation now is its all down to the last game next Saturday away to Dublin Bus, a win and three points and the title is on its way to the Whitegates, on behalf of everyone in the club I’d like to take this chance to wish James, Dixie, Martin and the lads the best of luck next week, lets hope all your hard work gets its rewards. To all our supporters out there, come along and give your vocal support to this team, it’s a young team with a sprinkle of experienced players and to see a good crowd would give them such a boost, thanks.
The second team took on Glenview in Bray on Sunday with both defences coming out on top in a scoreless draw. The thirds and youths had didn’t play.
The under 11 girls lost out 4-0 to a very strong Cabinteely team while the under 13’s received a walkover from Balrath. The 15 girls had a good home win over Ratoath Harps, a brace of goals from Ami Collier and a single from Chloe Brennan saw them win 3-0.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 20th MAY 2012

Well the first teams season came to a disappointing end on Saturday afternoon when they travelled to take on Dublin Bus knowing that three points would see them lift the title, anything less and they would have to settle for the runners up position. They fell behind midway through the first half but their never say die spirit saw them claw their way back into the game when Paul O’Neill equalised on sixty five minutes. With the home team creating very little in the way of clear cut chances it was Rovers who were on top in the second period, they had a couple of good chances but failed to take them. In the dying seconds the lads were awarded a penalty but were denied by the keeper. It was hard luck on the lads, in football you need a certain amount of luck, on the day they should have won this game but at crucial times they didn’t get that little bit of luck that’s needed.
We had two of our junior sides in shield finals last week, the 11A’s went down to a strong Arklow Town side on a 5-0 score line but in truth the score flattered the winners as it should have been a lot closer. The 11B’s were involved in a six goal thriller with Shamrock Bhoys in their final, after extra time the sides were locked at 3-3 on it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout which Shamrock Bhoys won by three goals to two. Goalscorers for the lads in the match were Rob Mitchell, Fionn Matthews and an own goal.
In the girls section the under 11’s went down by two goals to one with Niamh McSorley scoring her sixth of the season. The 13’s had a convincing 7-0 win over Peamount Utd, goal machine Rioghna McGettigan  hit a hat-trick to take her total for the season to seventeen, Clarisse Broughan notched a brace and there were singles from Eleanor Dunne and Sadbh Ni Dhubhsline in an excellent team performance.
The under 15 girls received a walkover from Terenure FC.
With a limited amount games last week we had only the one player in the hat-trick club and that honour fell to Rioghna McGettigan for the girls under 13’s, her three goals came in her side 7-0 victory over Peamount Utd, well done Rioghna.

In the schoolboys/girls section our under 16A’s and 10A’s were involved in Premier shield finals. The 16’s took on Arklow Town A in their shield final looking to complete a league, cup and shield treble and they duly obliged defeating Arklow 4-0 to complete the shield with a one hundred percent record while also maintaining their unbeaten record in all competitions on the domestic front. Congratulations to Neill, Roger and the lads on this great achievement. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th AUGUST 2012

The first team kicked off the new season with a home game against Skerries Town on Sunday afternoon, this was their first match in the intermediate grade so they were looking for a good start. They got the good start they were looking for but in truth they will need to step up on this very patchy performance. They got off to a great start when Luke Byrne fired home a free kick after five minutes and they doubled this in the sixty seventh minute when sub Paul O’Neill finished off a good move involving Luke Byrne, Gareth Murphy and Mark O’Sullivan. Four minutes later Rovers conceded a soft goal to let the visitors back into the game and they made life even harder for themselves when they had two players red carded in the dying minutes of the game. They play Greystones Utd in The Woodlands on Wednesday 22 nd August [tonight] in their second game.

WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th AUGUST 2012

The first team played two games last week, on Wednesday night they lost out to Greystones Utd away in a five goal thriller, they lost out on a 3-2 scoreline with Ricky Quinn and Stephen Moran scoring the goals. On Sunday afternoon they were back in the Whitegates where they recorded a fantastic 3-0 win over Parkvilla, Shane Cassidy set them on the way in the twenty eighth when he thundered home a header from a corner. In a fairly even game the insurance goal came with fifteen minutes remaining, Paul O’Neill made a nuisance of himself and never let the keeper relax on a back pass, he took the ball from the keeper and went around him only to be pulled down. The away keeper was fortunate to remain on the pitch but the lads got their reward when Ian Brannigan smashed home the resulting spot kick. With five minutes left on the clock the best move of the game saw the lads score the third goal. Stephen Earls, Gareth Murphy, Greg Dunne, Darren Nolan and Paul O’Neill were all involved in the move that set Luke Byrne away on the right, Luke went around the advancing keeper to slot home number three.
The second team started their first season in the Leinster Senior League with an excellent point away to one of the title favourites Greystones Utd, Sean Tobin notched the goal in a 1-1 draw in what was an excellent team performance. On Saturday they entertained Rush Athletic in the Whitegates and recorded all three points in a 3-0 victory, Darren Pierce, Ciaran McGettigan and David Rowan were all on the score sheet in a solid team performance. A highlight of this game was the impressive performances from some of the young players, both Karl Earls and Aaron O’Sullivan were excellent in the full back positions and Ciaran McGettigan came off the bench to score Rovers second goal to give them breathing space at a crucial stage of the game. This result means they set the early pace as joint leaders on four points from two games with Greystones Utd.

With the new season fast approaching club membership will be due very soon, the club have organised the following registration nights: Wednesday 29 th August, Friday 31 st August, Monday 10 th September and Wednesday 12 th September, all registration nights will take place in the clubhouse at the Whitegates from 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th SEPTEMBER 2012

The first team were held to a disappointing draw at home to St Mochtas, after playing against ten men for over fifty minutes this will be counted as two points dropped. Luke Byrne gave them the ideal start after two minutes, the away side drew level with a wicked deflection on the half hour. From this point chances were at a premium with neither team coming close to breaking the deadlock. The lads have been drawn away to Pegasus St James Athletic FC in the first round of the FAI Intermediate Cup, no date fixed yet.
The second team went down to their first defeat of the season, with fifteen minutes remaining on the clock they were 2-1 up and looked in total control of the game. They were creating plenty of chances to seal a victory but then in a mad last fifteen they conceded three goals to lose 4-2, after falling behind in the first half they battled back to take a 2-1 lead before conceding those three goals, two of which were very soft. Goalscorers on the day were Neil Doyle and Ciaran McGettigan.
A very young third team went down 2-1 away to Rathnew, Mikey Delaney gave Rovers the lead but Rathnew hit two goals in the last ten minutes one of which was hotly disputed to take all three points.
Jamis Noble of the under 11B’s became the first player to enter this season’s hat-trick club when he hit the back of the net three times in his teams 7-1 away victory over Wolfe Tone B, well done Jamie.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish former committee member Ray Clancy a speedy recovery from illness, we all hope your up and about very soon, get well soon Ray.

Everyone at the club would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Tommy Cahill, Tommy managed the first team to a Wicklow Cup and Premier League double back in the 1987/88 season. In the same season he also won the Wicklow area of the FAI Junior Cup. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th SEPT 2012

Our first team took on Garda FC away last Friday night, they came home with a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw. By all accounts this is a game they should have won after turning in an excellent all round team performance. Ricki Quinn continued his impressive start to the season with his second goal of the season to keep the lads in fourth place in the league.
The second team inflicted the first defeat of the season on Dunboyne FC in their own backyard, they travelled to Dunboyne and collected all three points courtesy of a Jim Foley penalty. It was a tough battle and an excellent three points which draws them level with their opponents in joint second place and keeps them nicely tucked in behind Greystones United.
The third team were at home to Avonmore A, they went down by a score of 2-1 with Paddy Clarke getting the Rovers goal. This was a team that was put together at the last minute and with a few games under their belts they have the potential to improve. They have good sprinkle of young players so the more games they get, can only help them.
The under 12 girls had an excellent 4-0 home win over Shankill FC, Niamh McSorley hit a splendid hat-trick with Niamh Caffrey scoring the other. The under 14 girls were involved in a six goal thriller away to Lucan Utd, the match ended 3-3 with Rioghna McGettigan scoring a brace and Eve Christie hitting a single.
We had five players in the hat-trick club this week,  four of the five players hit four goals or more, first up was Eoin McAulay who hit four goals for the 15A’s in their 8-1 win at home to Arklow Town A on Saturday, on the same day Kieran Bloomfield went one better when he netted an incredible five times for the 16A’s in their 12-1 home victory over Greystones Utd A, next was Charlie Christie who scored all four goals for the 11B’s in their 4-2 win away to Greystones Utd C. Keith Carty netted four times for the 12A’s in their 5-3 win against local neighbours Wicklow Town A, last but not least was Niamh McSorley who scored three goals for the under 12 girls in their 4-0 victory over Shankill FC, well done Niamh, Charlie, Keith, Eoin and Kieran.
The club have set two further club membership registration nights, they will be held in the clubhouse in The Whitegates on Thursday the 20 th of September and Thursday the 27 th of September from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. These will definitely be the last two nights for registering with the club. Due to insurance stipulations, if a player is not registered with the club they could be prevented from playing. The closing date for club membership registration is the 30 th of September, if this is a problem please contact any committee member. Membership registration nights are for all intended members of the club.
The club are currently trying to set up a sub committee to look after sponsorship/fund raising, at present we have a couple of parents interested in getting this committee up and running but they are going to need help with it, so if you are parent with a child playing in the club and want to help the club further improve the clubs facilities and the club as a whole why not come forward and help. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 23rd SEPTEMBER 2012

Our first team went down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Lucan United on Sunday afternoon in the Whitegates, this result drops them down to mid table and at this early stage they need to string a bit of a run together to get themselves back in contention. The good thing about this league is everyone is capable of taking points off each other so there’s bound to be lots of twists in the title race.
The second team took on unbeaten Drumcondra last Saturday in the Whitegates, both teams were locked together in joint second place in the league with three other sides. Rovers totally controlled this game from start to finish and probably should have won by a bigger margin, they rattled the woodwork on several occasions. In the end they ran out easy winners by 3 goals to nil. Sean Tobin set them on their way heading home Jim Foley’s corner after eighteen minutes. Karl Earls and Jay Waters both hit the woodwork before the break. The second half was more pressure from Rovers and it was no surprise when substitute Paddy Clarke put them further in front on sixty one minutes. Ciaran McGettigan worked hard all afternoon and just when we thought he got his reward his well taken goal was harshly ruled out for offside in the seventy fifth minute but he did finally hit the back of the net when he got on the end of a Sean Tobin cross in the last minute to complete the scoring and given Rovers a comfortable three points. [Full match report on club website].
The third team had no game at the weekend.
Two out of the three girls teams were in action over the weekend, the under 12’s had no game, the under 14’s went down narrowly by one goal to nil against  Maynooth Town while the under 16’s lost out 3-0 to a strong Lucan Utd side.
We had one player in the hat-trick club this week, Eoin McAulay hit the back of the net four times last week and followed that with three goals this week for the under 15A’s in their 6-1 away victory over Ardmore Rovers A, seven goals in two games is a great return by all accounts, well done Eoin.
The club have one further club membership registration nights, it will be held in the clubhouse in The Whitegates on Thursday [tomorrow] the 27 th of September from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. This will definitely be the last night for registering with the club. The club have had several registration nights and all the committee have been at these nights so it is totally unfair for people to expect these volunteers to keep adding extra nights for registration and spending their free time doing this work when they could be carrying out other duties within the club. Due to insurance stipulations, if a player is not registered with the club they could be prevented from playing. The closing date for club membership registration is the 30 th of September, if this is a problem please contact any committee member. Membership registration nights are for all intended members of the club.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 30th SEPTEMBER 2012

The first team were in action in the first round of the FAI Intermediate cup at the weekend when they played Pegasus/St James Athletic away, they lost out by two goals to one but turned in a good performance. Their opponents play in the division above them and are unbeaten so this was always going to be a tough game. Rovers scored when a Maurice Dunne corner was met by Joe Quinn, the breaking ball fell to Darren Nolan who showed great composure to round the defender and powerfully finish past the keeper. Rovers conceded two soft goals and if they had finished off their own chances they could easily have won this game. Jamie Snell was man of the match on his debut, Joe Quinn, Luke Byrne, Maurice Dunne and Mark O’Sullivan played well in a good team performance.
The second team went down 1-0 away to Killester United, it was a close game that could have went either way and the lads were unlucky not to get at least a point out of this game, the result means they fall three points behind league leaders Greystones United. The club would like to wish second team player Karl Earls a speedy recovery from injury, we hope to see you back on the playing fields very soon.
The third team were away to St Patricks in Avoca at the weekend and they gained their first point of the season in a thrilling 3-3 draw, they went 1-0 up but the home team pegged them back, they then nabbed two more goals to go 3-1 up but St Patricks hit back with two goals, the equaliser coming from the penalty spot with a minute left on the clock. This young team gave a good account of themselves against a tough St Patricks side and were unlucky not to take all three points. Darren Kane scored a brace and Niall O’Rourke scored the other and hopefully they will kick on from this result.
We had six of our junior sides in National Cup action over the weekend, first up on Saturday was the 13B’s who came up against a strong Greenhills Boys team and were beaten comprehensively, in fairness to the lads they battled to the end. The under 14B’s travelled to Kildare to take on Prosperous United and lost out 6-0. On Sunday the 12A’s took on their club mates the B team and ran out convincing winners to progress to the second round, the 14A’s lost out 2-0 to Beechwood FC in a close game between two even teams. Our under 15B’s were unlucky to lose out to Ardmore Rovers from the South Dublin League in a six goal thriller losing 4-2 after extra time. The 13A’s, 15A’s and 16A’s all received byes to the second round of their cups.
In the girls section, the under 16 girls had a convincing 7-2 home victory over HHFC, a brace from Ally Webb and singles from Alicia O’Rourke, Clodagh Fox, Jade Manley, Chloe Brennan and Kayleigh Sullivan accounted for their goals.
We had two players in the hat-trick club this week, goal scoring machine Charlie Christie hit his second hat-trick of the season for the 11B’s in his teams 5-2 away win against Ashford Rovs. B to take his tally to eleven goals in three games, also in the hat-trick club was Shane Cullinan who hit three for the under 12A’s in their National cup win over their club mates from the B team, well done Charlie and Shane.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate first team player Greg Dunne and Sasha Hegarthy on the arrival of baby Abbie, we all wish you the best of luck, health and happiness for the future.
Registration nights for club membership finished during the week, we have now held six nights for people to register, the executive committee will now meet to decide if there will be anymore registration nights. To all players and parents, if you have not registered please contact any committee member or your manager regarding payment or your preferred payment plan.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to express their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Bernadette Neilan, Bernadette’s grandson Joseph plays for our under 9A’s and her son Joe is on our executive committee, our deepest condolences go out to Joe, Joseph, the Neilan family and friends, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may she rest in peace.
The club are seeking players for under 9’s [Born 2004], 10’s [Born 2003] and 11’s [Born 2002], if you have a child at any of these age groups and are interested in playing please contact John Frazer at 087-0564394.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th OCTOBER 2012

The first team didn’t have a fixture at the weekend, the second team took on Earl Celtic at the Whitegates on Saturday and recorded a disappointing 0-0 draw. Our thirds went down 2-0 to our neighbours Wicklow Town A, the Town were well deserving winners on the day but the lads are a young team and the more they stick together and the more games they get under their belts they can only improve.
The girls under 12 team had a comprehensive win in the first round of the MGL cup, they defeated Stamullen by a score of 9-0, four players notched a brace a piece, Emer McNulty, Jessica Lyons, Lucy McGettigan and Niamh Caffrey all hit two goals each while Holly McSorley added a single to comfortably progress to round two.
In the hat-trick club this week we had two players, first up was Kieran Bloomfield who hit his second hat-trick of the season with three goals for the under 16A’s in their 5-2 away win against Greystones Utd in the premier shield. Performance of the weekend has to go to Alfie Heather of the under 14B’s who hit a stunning six goals for his team in their exciting 7-3 victory at home to Arklow United B in the division 3 shield. Alfie’s double hat-trick were from the top drawer, finishing at its best and it has to be said everyone of his six goals had to be worked for and were all top quality finishes. [Match report on club website].
In other matches at the weekend the 8A’s beat Ardmore Rovers A 3-1 with Charlie Phelan, Rory Hennessy and Aaron Murray scoring the goals. The 8B’s were defeated by Ardmore Rovers B 6-0, the 9A’s lost out 2-1 away to Rathnew with Glen Broughan getting the goal. Our 10B’s drew 2-2 with Roundwood with Adam O’Reilly nabbing both goals. The 11B’s went down 3-2 at home to Fassaroe YC, Daniel Murphy and Charlie Christie getting the goals. The 12B’s were beaten by a strong St Anthonys team. In the under 13 section the A’s defeated Greystones Utd A 3-2 with two goals from Luca Rampersaud and one from Adam Cullen while the B team lost 6-1 away to Ashford Rovers with Stuart Cox getting their goal. The 14A’s beat Wolfe Tone B 4-1 at the Whitegates with JJ Power scoring two and Shane Devlin and Michael Anthony Doyle scoring one each. The 14B’s were involved in a ten goal thriller coming out on top by seven goals to three, in this game Alfie Heather helped himself to an incredible double hat-trick with Jack Doran scoring the other. The 15A’s maintained their one hundred percent start to the season with a 6-3 win over Arklow United with two goals from Ross Quinn and singles from Andrew Earls, Adam Copeland, Eoin McAulay and Colin O’Toole. Finally the under 16A’s continued their good start with a 5-2 away win against Greystones United, Kieran Bloomfield nabbed his second hat-trick of the season while Liam Kavanagh, and Darragh O’Connor scored one a piece.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 21st OCTOBER 2012

Both the first and second teams had no games at the weekend. The third team entertained league leaders St Fergals at the Whitegates and yet again lady luck deserted them, they matched their more experienced opponents and went in front with an early goal from Mikey Delaney, they eventually lost out 3-2 with Paddy Clarke scoring the other goal but they should have taken something from the game, they also failed to convert a penalty as they yet again lose by the minimum of margins.
In the girls section the under 12’s went down 3-1 away to Greystones, leading scorer Niamh Caffrey scored the Rovers goal to keep her record of scoring in every game since the start of the season and  brings her tally to six goals in four games. The under 16 girls won 9-0 away to Liffey Valley FC, the highlight of the game was two hat-tricks, one from Amie Collier and the other from Kayleigh Sullivan. Ally Webb, Chloe Brennan and Alicia O’Rourke all weighed in with singles. The under 14 game was off.
On the junior front we were suppose to have four teams in National Cup action, three teams received walkovers while the other fell victim to the weather, the 12A’s were awarded a walkover from Lakelands B, the 13A’s got a walkover from Bush Celtic while the 16A’s received a walkover from Castle Villa. The 15A’s game away to Naas United fell foul of the weather. Elsewhere in the schoolboy/girls section the under 8A’s drew 2-2 with Rathnew with the deadly duo of Aaron Murray and Charlie Phelan notching a goal a piece, our 9A’s defeated Greystones 2-0 with Glen Broughan and Mark Hodgkinson hitting the back of the net, the 9C’s played their second match of the season and recorded their first win defeating Enniskerry B by two goals to one with David Butler and Kai Fitzsimmons netting the goals. Our 10A’s lost 3-0 away to Ardmore Rovers A, the 10B’s lost out to Rathnew 3-2 in a thriller, Adam O’Reilly and an og accounted for Rovers goals, the 10C’s won 2-0 away to local rivals Wicklow Town, Finn Egan Barron and Aaron Lynch supplying the goals. The 11B’s kept themselves well in the title hunt with a narrow 1-0 away win over Greystones with Joe O’Shea getting the all important goal. The 12B’s lost 4-1 away to Greystones with Fionn Matthews scoring his second goal of the season. Our 14A’s maintained their one hundred percent record in the division 1 shield with a 4-0 home win over Coolboy Rangers, Sean Algera, Rory Dowling, JJ Power and Shane Devlin were all on the scoreboard. The rest of our junior teams had no games.
The hat-trick club this week saw two ladies add their names to the list, both girls registered their hat-tricks for the under 16 girls in their 9-0 away win over Liffey Valley FC, Amie Collier and Kayleigh Sullivan both hit the back of the net three times, well done Amie and Kayleigh.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 28th OCTOBER 2012

There was very little action on the playing field this week due to the Bank Holiday weekend, it was left to the first and second teams to provide us with football. Our first team suffered their fourth successive defeat when they lost at home to Templeogue United by two goals to one. The first half saw them control the game for long periods and go in at the break with a deserved 1-0 lead. The second period was totally different with the only chance of note to the lads coming in the last minute with the away keeper saving well from Paul O’Neill but by this stage the lads had shot themselves in the foot. At 1-0 up midway through the half, the lack of discipline reared its head again with Rovers having a player dismissed for something that was said to the referee, the away side responded by scoring two goals in the space of a couple of minutes with fifteen minutes remaining. Paul Alexander and Ricki Quinn were Rovers best players on the day in an over worked defence especially in the second half when Rovers surrendered control in the middle of the park. This result sees them drop to fourth from the bottom of the league but with very little separating all the teams in this league a couple of wins could propel them up the table.
The seconds were away on Saturday, they took on Rathcoole Boys who were two places and two points behind Rovers in the league, so to come away with a share of the spoils was an excellent result, Mark Delaney scored the all important goal to gain a valuable point to keep them in touch with the leaders. This result leaves them in third place two points behind joint leaders Greystones Utd and Killester Utd.
Congratulations to our under 13A and 16A teams on qualifying for their premier shield finals, well done lads.
Jimmy, Brian and the under 16A team would like to thank Jason and St Anthonys for coming down to Wicklow to play a friendly last Saturday morning, it was much appreciated, thanks again.
Our Saturday morning soccer academy will resume this Saturday the 3 rd of November on the all weather pitch at 11 am, so all you kids from 3 years of age up to 8 years come along and enjoy the game of soccer under the guidance of Johnny Dunne.
The club are seeking players for under 8’s [Born 2005/2006], under 9’s [Born 2004] and under 11’s [Born 2002], if you have a child at any of these age groups and are interested in playing please contact John Frazer at 087-0564394.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 4th NOVEMBER 2012

Action for the senior teams was provided by the firsts and seconds with the third team having no game. On Friday night the first team travelled to take on Parkvilla FC in the first round of the Gilligan Cup and were disappointed to fall at the first hurdle. In truth they should take a good look at their disciplinary record of late as there is a pattern developing as the red mist descended on them again on Friday night. This time the red card came early in play and left the team with an uphill task. Eventually they lost out by two goals to one with Ricki Quinn scoring their goal. At the moment the team is in a bit of a slump but they are only losing games by the odd goal, at this level its hard enough to win games with eleven players on the field never mind playing with ten.
The second team however had a more positive result, they took on joint league leaders Killester Utd and defeated them on a 2-1 score line, this was a tight game between two committed teams, Rovers took the lead courtesy of an Aidan O’Neill penalty but a very good Killester side drew level to make it 1-1 at the break. The crucial goal came with seven minutes left when Warren Gormley powerfully headed home a Rovers corner to give them all three points and in turn leap frog the visitors and Greystones Utd to the top of the league.

In the girls section the under 12’s had a great 6-0 win away to Peamount Utd B in the second round of the MGL cup, leading scorer Niamh Caffrey helped herself to a hat-trick with singles from Amy Kavanagh, Clodagh Irwin and Emer McNulty completing the tally. The under 14’s lost 4-3 away to Lucan Utd in the second round of their cup, Jade Duffy must have felt a little unlucky as she netted a fantastic hat-trick and still ended up on the losing side. The under 16’s lost 3-1 away to Broadford Rovers in the league with Kayleigh Sullivan getting the goal.
In the WDSL section there was a lot of cancellations, of the games that were played our under 8B’s recorded an excellent 6-2 home win over St Patricks A with the highlight a splendid four goals from Liam Burke, Tom Donoghue and Brian McCaul hit the other goals. The 9A’s had a narrow 2-1 away win over Arklow Utd with Conor Hunter and Calum Gibney hitting the back of the net. The 9B’s lost 6-0 to a very strong St Patricks team. Our 11A’s continued their quest for division one honours with a 4-2 home victory over Wolfe Tone A, two under 10 players were on the score sheet here with Max Kearney getting a brace and Troy Sutton also scoring, Craig Anderson scored the fourth goal. The 11B’s title hopes suffered a set back when they lost out in a seven goal thriller in the Hockey Pitch losing 4-3 to St Patricks, Charlie Christie, Brian Hopkins and Jamie Noble all found the back of the net. The 13B’s recorded their first win of the season when they beat Arklow Utd 7-1, Stuart Cox hit a hat-trick with Stephen Finlay notching two and Dean Noble and Cormac Murray scoring one a piece. The under 14A’s maintained their one hundred percent record in the division one shield when they defeated Wolfe Tone B 8-2 to qualify for the final, Rory Dowling hit the back of the net four times followed closely by Shane Devlin who scored three, JJ Power scored the other. The only other game played was the under 15A’s refixed National Cup game against Naas Utd, this game was originally due to be played in the Kildare teams ground but it was cancelled so it reverted to the Whitegates, it was a closely fought game which the Kildare side won by two goals to nil. Rovers will feel they left this game behind them because they had the chances to win the game but failed to take them.
Even though a lot of games fell foul of the weather we still managed to have six players in the hat-trick club, Niamh Caffrey [Under 12 Girls], Jade Duffy [Under 14 Girls], Liam Burke [Under 8B’s], Stuart Cox [Under 13B’s], Rory Dowling [Under 14A’s] and Shane Devlin [Under 14A’s] all hit hat-tricks with Liam and Rory scoring four goals. Well done Niamh, Jade, Liam, Stuart, Rory and Shane.
Congratulations to our under 14A’s who qualified for the division one shield final after their 8-2 victory over Wolfe Tone B at the weekend.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 11th NOVEMBER 2012

On the senior front this week it was a bad weekend all round, the firsts recent slump continued when they went down 2-1 away to Portmarnock FC. The seconds lost out to Drumcondra on a 2-0 score line while the thirds were comprehensively defeated by Rathnew by six goals to nil.

The 12A’s followed that with a victory over Knocklyon B by four goals to two, Keith Carty notched two with Dylan Frazer and Shane Cullinan scoring one each. The 12B’s lost out narrowly to Glencormac Utd by a score of 3-2, Fionn Matthews third of the season and Alex Porter’s first accounted for the goals. In the under 15 Premier cup quarter final the A’s defeated their club counterparts the B’s by four goals to one, Ross Quinn scored two and Hugh Humby and Rian Daunt Smyth scored one each.
Josh Browne hit the B team goal.
In the girls section the, under 12 girls lost 1-0 at home to Cabinteely, they bombarded the Cabinteely goal in this game but couldn’t find away past the inspired away keeper, a mixture of good goalkeeping and bad luck saw Rovers draw a blank in a game on another day they would have won comfortably, see match report and photos on club website. The under 14 girls drew 1-1 away to Enniskerry with Emily Carey scoring her first of the season. The under 16 girls game was off.
Also our under 14B team are currently seeking a couple of players, if you were born in 1999 and are interested in playing soccer please contact any committee member.

The first team ended their bad recent run with a fantastic win over Lucan Utd in the first round of the Moore Cup at the Whitegates on Sunday afternoon, Mark O’Sullivan scored the all important goal in a 1-0 win in what was a good all round team performance.
The second team took on Farm Utd at the Whitegates on Saturday and collected all three points with a 2-1 victory. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th NOVEMBER 2012

Well the bad weather struck with a vengeance at the weekend, the only game to beat the weather was the first team’s game away to St James Gate on Friday night and we didn’t get anything from this game with the lads losing out 3-1 in what was a very disappointing performance by all accounts, Darren Nolan hit his second goal of the season for the lads.
The Hockey pitch was left in a terrible state at the weekend, someone let horses and ponies in on the pitch with the result that parts of the pitch were tore up resulting with the club having no choice but to cancel all super 7’s and 9’s games at the weekend, a lot of work will be required to get the pitch back in a playable condition, the only people to suffer in all this is the kids, they were left without football so we would ask the people responsible for letting the horses in on the pitch could they please refrain from doing so in the future.
The club are holding a managers meeting on Tuesday the 4 th of December in the clubhouse at The Whitegates at 8 pm, all managers are requested to attend this meeting, if you cannot attend the meeting please send your assistant in your place, both manager and assistant are welcome to attend if they both wish to do so.
Everyone connected with Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate Jade Duffy and Megan Dunne on their selection for the under 13 Metropolitan Girls League development squad, this is a magnificent achievement for the two girls and their families. The squad consists of only nineteen players and when you take into account that the squad is selected from an area covering Wicklow, Carlow, Kildare, Meath, Dublin and Louth it just shows how much of an honour their selection is. Both players are part of the club’s under 14 team, Megan has been turning in some impressive displays between the posts while Jade has been equally impressive at the other end of the pitch scoring five goals in five games to be joint leading goalscorer for the team.  Everyone at the club is proud of their achievement and we would like to wish them both further success in the future, once again well done Megan and Jade.
The clubs annual Christmas raffle will be held in The Grand Hotel on Saturday the 22 nd of December at 8 pm, all managers should have their raffle tickets for their players by now, if you have not received your tickets please contact any committee member, the Christmas raffle is one of the main club fundraisers so we would like and appreciate if all members could do their best to sell their allocated tickets, many thanks.
The club are holding a clothing recycling drive on Saturday the 1 st of December at the clubhouse in the Whitegates from 12 noon to 2 pm so if you have clean unwanted clothes you would like to donate please drop them in at the above location between the stated time, thank you

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd DECEMBER 2012

The first team took on league leaders Ballyfermot United and put in an excellent performance before unluckily losing out by one goal to nil, if lady luck was on their side the result could have been very different but with a bit more luck it shouldn’t be long before they start climbing the league
The second teams title hope received a set back when they suffered a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Cabinteely FC at The Whitegates on Saturday afternoon, that’s the story in this league, as results have proved that teams near the bottom are well capable of beating teams at the top and that’s  exactly what happened at the weekend.
The third team entertained division one league leaders St Patricks at The Whitegates and they were also unlucky to lose as they matched their opponents through out the game and eventually lost 2-0, this side is very young and still finding their feet and with a little bit more experience results could start going their way.
On the junior front last Saturday the under 12A’s run in the National Cup came to an end when they were defeated by a very strong Tullamore Town side in the fourth round by a score of 4-0. The under 8A’s went down 5-1 away to St Anthonys with Aaron Murray hitting his fifth goal of the season while the 8B’s lost narrowly away to Carnew by two goals to one with Charlie Doherty scoring the Rovers goal. The under 9A’s fared better when they came out on top in their local derby away to Rathnew, Glen Broughan, Mark Hodgkinson, Chris Bouchier and Joseph Neilan all scored a goal a piece in a good 4-1 victory. Our 15A’s game with Ardmore Rovers was off but the 15B’s were involved in a seven goal thriller away to Arklow United before unluckily losing out 4-3, James Hayes Kavanagh notched a brace with Rian Sweetman Burke scoring the other in a very entertaining game.
On Sunday the stand out result of the day was an excellent win for the under 16’s in the fourth round of the National Cup away to Ardmore Rovers of the South Dublin League, this victory means they progress to the open draw and the last 32 of the competition, two goals from Kieran Bloomfield and one from Glen McCarthy saw them run out 3-1 winners in a tough encounter. Elsewhere the 10A’s were involved in a seven goal thriller away to Enniskerry, a brace from Mark O’Brien plus singles from Conor Lewins and Max Kearney earned them a tense 4-3 win. The 10C’s went down 3-0 at home to a good Coolboy Rangers team. Our 13A’s defeated Greystones United at the Woodlands in their first league game by two goals to one, Adam Byrne claimed his eighth and ninth goals of the season scoring both goals for Rovers. The 13B’s recorded a good 4-2 away win against Roundwood, Harry Byrne, Jack Gibney, Jack Evans and Cormac Murray all scored a goal a piece. The 14A’s had a home win over Aughrim Rangers on a 6-2 score line, JJ Power hit a brace with singles from Adam Melia, Shane Devlin, Jack Geraghty and Eddy Geraghty accounting for the total. The 9C and 11A games were called off due to frozen pitches. In the girls section the under 16 team were the only team in action and they went down 4-0 away to a very strong Templeogue United side in the quarter final of the Irish Rail Cup.
The clubs annual Christmas raffle will be held in The Grand Hotel on Saturday the 22 nd of December at 8 pm, all managers should have their raffle tickets for their players by now, the Christmas raffle is one of the main club fundraisers so we would like and appreciate if all members could do their best to sell their allocated tickets, many thanks.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th DECEMBER 2012

The first team ended their recent bad run in the league on Sunday when they defeated one of the pre-season favourites Kilnamanagh FC by two goals to one, Kilnamanagh were in second place in the table prior to the game so for the lads to travel and beat them on their own patch shows just how tough a league this is, on the day Luke Byrne and a first goal of the season for Sean Duffy scored the all important goals to claim all three points.
The second team took on Dunboyne FC in what was second versus third and at the end of ninety minutes there was nothing separating the two teams as the spoils were shared after a 2-2 draw, Mark Delaney and Warren Gormley scored the goals that kept the lads a point clear of their opponents.
On the junior front on Saturday the 9B’s had a great 3-2 away win over St Patricks, they lost heavily to the same opponents a few weeks back, so this win is a sign of the improvement in the team. Sean O’Meara notched a brace and Tom Wilkinson nabbed one as both players scored their first goals of the season. The 13A’s completed their shield fixtures and maintained their hundred percent record with a hard earned 2-1 home victory over Avonmore, Adam Byrne hit his tenth goal of the season while Ronan Murray scored his first to give them all three points and the final to look forward to. The 14A’s had a good 3-1 away win against Coolboy Rangers, this win means they top their shield table with a hundred percent record and a place in the final, a double from Matthew Traynor and a first of the season from Daniel O’Boyle accounted for their goals. The 15A’s edged closer to the final of the premier shield with a point at home to their closest rivals Arklow Utd, Oisin Daunt Smyth scored his first of the season and the other goal came in the shape of an og. Our 16A’s suffered a hangover from last weeks great National cup win when they were defeated by Arklow Town A by a score of 4-1, the good news is even before this game they had already assured themselves of a place in the premier shield final,  Alan Power scored the lone goal as they were well beaten by a hungrier Arklow team. The 16’s face a long journey in the last 32 of the National cup when they were drawn away to the winners of Ballisadare Utd [Sligo] or Tuam Celtic [Galway] when the draw was made on Saturday evening. On Sunday the 8A’s went down 3-2 away to Arklow Town, Aaron Murray scored for the third successive game to take his total to six for the season with Peter Dunne scoring the second. The 8B’s lost 3-1 away to St Patricks with Tom Donoghue scoring their goal. The 9A’s made it seven wins on the bounce with a 3-2 home success over Arklow United, a brace from Conor Hunter and a single from Tiernan O’Brien accounted for their goals. The 10C’s went down 3-0 away to a strong Enniskerry team but with a bit of luck they might have got something from this game. Our 12A’s moved a step closer to the premier shield final with a comprehensive 5-1 away win over Aughrim Rangers, Keith Carty scored a double to bring his total to twelve for the season while Conor Byrne, Ryan Corrigan and Cillian Kelly all recorded singles. The 14B’s lost out by the odd goal in seven away to Arklow United, Alfie Heather hit two and Shaun Paul Dunne nabbed the other. The 15B’s recorded their first win of the season when they had an excellent 4-1 home win over Arklow Town A, Mark Darragh scored two goals, James Hayes Kavanagh made it three goals in two games when he scored one and Josh Browne added the fourth for an impressive victory. The under 9C, 12B and 13B games were called off.
In the girls section the under 12 game away to Shankill was called off, the under 14’s recorded an impressive 3-1 home win over Peamount United, MGL academy player Jade Duffy scored one of the goals with Rioghna McGettigan and Tess Haskins also hitting the back of the net. The 16’s also had a good win, they defeated Broadford Rovers 2-0 at the Whitegates with goals from Ami Collier and a thirty five yard screamer from Jade Manley.
All managers are requested to make sure all Christmas raffle tickets are returned to any committee member this week, if you ring any committee member we can arrange to meet to pick up the tickets, thank you.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th DECEMBER 2012

There was no senior action last weekend, it was also the Christmas break for the girls teams.

On Saturday the under 16’s took on Coolboy Rangers in the final of the Premier Shield, after a tense battle they emerged victorious on a 3-2 score line, after suffering three shield final defeats in the last three years it was an overdue and well deserved victory for a lot of hard work and dedication from this group of players, a brace from Kieran Bloomfield and a single from team captain Liam Kavanagh accounted for their goals. The full squad is Daragh Hosey, Brendan Hawes, Rory O’Kelly, Aaron Meade, Conor Moore, Andrew O’Brien, Mark Egan, Craig Waldron, Alan Power, Lee Boylan, Liam Kavanagh, Glen McCarthy, James Nolan, Darragh O’Connor and Kieran Bloomfield. Well done once again to Jimmy, Brian and the lads. The under 12B’s were in action in the shield and they lost 5-2 at home to Greystones United B at The Whitegates, Ryan Murphy scored his first of the season with James Bradshaw hitting his second of the campaign. On Sunday the under 10A’s defeated Ashford Rovers by three goals to one with Mark O’Brien, Max Kearney and Lee Hamilton netting the goals. The 10C’s defeated local rivals Wicklow Town in a close encounter, Finn Egan Barron hit his sixth goal of the season to give his team a narrow 1-0 victory. Our 11A’s came out on top against one of their title rivals St Anthonys by a score of 6-3, Brandon O’Brien hit a splendid hat-trick, under 10 player Max Kearney and Frankie Reynolds scored one each with the other goal coming in the shape of an og. The 12A’s defeated Aughrim Rangers for the second week running, Conor Byrne and Tristan O’Toole both helped themselves to a brace of goals with Shane Lincoln scoring the other in a 5-1 win. The 14B’s beat Greystones United 7-2 in the Rocky Road, the highlight of this game was a couple of hat-tricks, one from Alfie Heather who scored a double hat-trick earlier in the season and the other from Ronan Murray. Ben Watson scored one to complete the seven goal haul. The 15B’s went down 2-0 at home to Ardmore Rovers in a game if they had taken their chances the outcome could have been so different.
We had three players in the hat-trick club this week, first we had two in the one match, both Alfie Heather and Ronan Murray scored three times for the under 14B’s in their 7-2 victory over Greystones United. Brandon O’Brien also scored an excellent hat-trick for the 11A’s in their top of the table clash with St Anthonys which they won 6-3, well done Alfie, Ronan and Brandon.

The executive committee of Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish the managers, assistant managers, coaches, players, parents and supporters of the club a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. We would also like to wish a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all the clubs, WDSL committee, WDFL committee, LSL committee, MGL committee, referees, Paul Dowling, Daniel O’Gorman, Brendan Lawrence and all the staff of the Wicklow People.
