WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 6th JANUARY 2013

The executive committee of the club would like to wish all our managers, assistant managers, coaches, players, parents, supporters and friends a happy and prosperous new year.
There was a limited amount of action on the playing field at the weekend, on Saturday the second team were the only ones in the senior side of the club in action and they got the new year off to a good start with an excellent three points when they defeated Cabinteely FC away by four goals to three in a seven goal thriller. Sean Tobin, Darren Pierce, Warren Gormley and Jim Foley were all on the mark in a victory that consolidates second place in the league table.
Three games took place on Saturday in the junior section, the 11A’s moved a step closer to the division one title when they recorded an impressive 5-2 win over Avonmore in the Hockey Pitch, a brace from Frankie Reynolds and one a piece from Craig Anderson, Robbie Hoffman and Brandon O’Brien  means they only require one point from their remaining two games to capture the title. Our 13B’s made it three wins from three games in the league when they comprehensively beat Ardmore Rovers on a score of 10-4, James Lang and Stuart Cox both hit the back of the net four times each while Dean Noble and Stephen Finlay adding singles. The 15 A’s lost out to Arklow Town in Lamberton by two goals to one, Rian Daunt Smyth scored the lone goal. The under 13A’s game away to Ashford Rovers was called off. On Sunday the under 10A’s lost narrowly 1-0 to Ardmore Rovers in a tight game while the 10C’s recorded a good 3-2 away win over Greystones Utd, Conor Leonard helped himself to a brace to make it eight for the season with Finn Egan Barron scoring his seventh of the campaign. Well done to the 12B’s who gained their first point of the season in a thrilling 4-4 draw with St Fergals, two from Ryan Murphy and one each from James Bradshaw and Fionn Matthews accounted for the goals. Its great to see this team get their rewards for all their hard work through out the season, its easy to turn out every week when things are going your way but this team turn up every week suffering defeat after defeat but never let it knock their enthusiasm for the game, a lot of credit for this goes to the hard work of manager Brendan Porter and his assistant Michael Galligan, well done lads. The 14B’s kept their chance of a place in their shield final alive when they defeated second placed Ashford Rovers 6-1 in The Whitegates, Alfie Heather hit his third hat-trick of the season to bring his total to seventeen in ten shield games, Evan Doyle scored his second of the season with two under 13 players Jack Dunne and Eli Graham completing the scoring.
In the hat-trick corner this week we had three players, two players plundered four goals a piece, both in the same game, James Lang and Stuart Cox were the two players who went goal crazy at the weekend helping the under 13B’s maintain their one hundred percent start to the league in a 10-4 victory over Ardmore Rovers, Alfie Heather smashed his third hat-trick of the season [which also includes a double hat-trick] against Ashford Rovers, Alfie notched his three goals for the 14B’s in their 6-1 win which keeps them in with a chance of making the shield final  well done Alfie, James and Stuart.
The club’s Saturday morning academy resumes this week from 11 till 12 on the all weather pitch at The Whitegates, the academy is under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne and is for kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years so if your child is interested why not bring them along, everyone welcome.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 20th JANUARY 2013

Well there was only one winner at the weekend and that was the weather, the adverse conditions wiped out the complete programme of WDSL fixtures. The MGL fixtures also fell foul of the weather. On the senior front all three senior teams saw their games cancelled due to waterlogged pitches.
We are now entering into the business end of the season for all our teams within the club. The committee would like to take this opportunity to wish all our senior, girls and schoolboys/girls teams the best of luck for the remainder of the season, good luck to you all. We would also like to wish our under 16A team the best of luck in the fifth round [last 32] of the National cup on Sunday the 3 rd of February when they travel to Sligo Town to take on Ballisodare United, good luck lads.
It has been noted that some managers are still not texting full information to our club secretaries. The text should contain both team names, whether A, B or C, age group, competition and goalscorers. Also text should be sent as soon as possible after the end of the match and should be sent whether you win or lose. Please think of the people who are giving up their time to send results and goalscorers to the league and newspaper, everything has a knock on effect by the delay to send your result in. This applies to the senior teams as well as the junior sides.
Also could all club members please use the bins provided in The Whitegates, recently its been noticed that rubbish has been left on the touchlines after games and its been left to committee members to go around after games to clear up plastic bottles and paper wrappings, please use the bins provided and keep our grounds tidy.
Our soccer academy is on every Saturday morning [weather permitting] in the Whitegates all weather pitch at 11 o’clock, so for fun and games while learning the skills of the game come to the Whitegates from 11 till 12 under the guidance of experienced coach Johnny Dunne. The academy is open to boys and girls from the age of three upwards.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 27th JANUARY 2013

Well another weekend of twiddling the thumbs regards playing football, with the weather more suited to water polo we yet again saw cancellations been the order of the day with all our WDSL fixtures falling foul of the weather for the second week running.
The only teams to beat the weather were the first team and the under 16 girls. The first team travelled to Skerries to take on the local team in the first round of the Noel Ryan Cup, they were disappointed to lose out on a 2-1 score line especially after controlling the game for long periods. With the sides locked at 1-1 going into the final minute, the home side struck the decisive goal which sent them into round two against the run of play. Ian Brannigan hit his second goal of the season when he converted from the penalty spot for Rovers.
The under 16 girls travelled to Oriel Park to take on Dundalk and after putting in a good shift they were unlucky to lose out 3-1. They led 1-0 at the break through a Chloe Brennan goal but the home team came storming back in the second period with the help of a strong wind to score three unanswered goals.
Everyone at the club would like to wish our under 16A team the best of luck in their last 32 game in the National Cup this Sunday, they make the long journey to Sligo Town to take on Ballisodare United and we would like to wish them well.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 3rd FEBRUARY 2013

Yet again the senior teams were curtailed from action at the weekend with both the first and second team matches fallen victims of the recent bad weather with their games away to Templeogue United and Rush Athletic respectively been called off due to waterlogged pitches. At this stage of the season the first team who had started the season well and then went into a slump have recently hit a bit of good form in the league with back to back wins away to Kilnamanagh FC and at home to St James Gate which has saw them pull away from the bottom end of the table. The second team are in second position in the league thirteen points behind runaway leaders Killester United but if they can win their two games in hand it might just apply a little pressure on the leaders. To be in with a chance of promotion in their first season in the Leinster Senior League and taking into account a fair sprinkle of young players in the squad it has been a good season so far.
Everyone at club would like to say well done to Jimmy, Brian and the under 16 team on progressing to the last 16 of the National Cup. They made the long journey to Sligo Town to take on local side Ballisodare United and secured an excellent 3-2 win. They will now take on Dublin side Mount Merrion FC in the last 16.
It has been noted that some managers are still not texting full information to our club secretaries. Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Norman Mason who sadly passed away recently, his son in law Billy was a stalwart with the club for years and his grandsons Simon and Paul are long serving members of the club, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. The 16A’s made their exit from the premier cup in the semi final losing in a dreaded penalty shoot out by four penalties to two, the game ended scoreless after extra time with the Rovers defence and Liam Kavanagh and Glen McCarthy in the centre of the park outstanding.
The weather was the winner on Sunday with the heavy over night rain putting paid to a lot of games, the first teams scheduled away fixture against Skerries Town and the third teams game against Celtic Stars were cancelled in the senior end of things. In the junior section the under 8B’s, 9A’s, 10B’s, 10C’s, 13A’s, 14A’s and 14B’s were all victims of the bad weather. Two games did beat the weather though, the under 10A’s switched their game to the all weather pitch in Ferndale Park where they took on Arklow United, they made it two wins from two in the shield with a good 4-2 win with Mark O’Brien, Sam Brown, Harry Hodgkinson and Troy Sutton all registering a goal a piece to claim all three points. The 12B’s made their exit at the quarter final stage of the division three cup losing 3-0 away to Greystones United.  In the girls section the 14’s and 16’s games were both cancelled but the under 12 girls managed to get a game in when they travelled to take on Enniskerry and returned with a comfortable 12-1 win, the highlight of this game was an amazing five goal haul for Sinead McGettigan to bring her total to nine for the season. Niamh Caffrey hit her fourth hat-trick of the season to make it twenty goals for her this campaign and both Clodagh Irwin and Emer McNulty helped themselves to a brace each to complete the twelve goal haul.
In the hat-trick corner this week we had two players and both from the same team, Sinead McGettigan hit an amazing five goals for the under 12 girls in their 12-1 victory over Enniskerry while Niamh Caffrey notched three goals to make it her fourth hat-trick of the season, well done Sinead and Niamh.

Also many thanks to all the people who sent good luck wishes and messages of congratulations to the team on their fantastic victory.
WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th FEBRUARY 2013

Friday night saw the return to action for the first team but unfortunately they went down to a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Lucan United and by all accounts they didn’t perform on the night. The second team entertained Newbridge Town in the Whitegates on Saturday, the away side ran out 4-3 winners in a seven goal thriller. This result puts a major dent in the second team’s title hopes. A brace from Warren Gormley and a single from Sean Tobin were the team’s goalscorers. The thirds team’s game away to St Fergals was cancelled.
In the junior section Saturday the under 10A’s made it three wins from three in the shield when they defeated Greystones Utd 4-0 away, two goals from Fionn Luddy and one a piece from Max Kearney and Conor Lewins has giving them the perfect start in the shield. The 13B’s made it five wins from five in the league when they had a comfortable 11-2 away victory over Enniskerry, Conor Hawes and Stephen Finlay both smashed home hat-tricks for their team, Stuart Cox helped himself to two while James Lang, Jack Evans and Cormac Murray all added singles. Our under 15A’s took on Arklow Town in Lamberton and came home with a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Eoin McAulay nabbing the goal to bring his tally to twelve for the campaign.
In the girls section the under 12’s game was called off but the 14’s had an excellent 5-1 away win over Shankill, Rioghna McGettigan brought her total to ten for the season with a brace, Clarrise Broughan also netted twice with Eve Christie scoring a single in a good all round team performance. The under 16 girls entertained Quay Celtic in the Whitegates on Sunday afternoon and after racing into a three goal lead they had to withstand a fight back from the away side to eventually run out 3-2 winners. Two players made the hat-trick club this week and both were in the same game, Stephen Finlay and Conor Hawes both hit the back of the net three times for the under 13B’s in their 11-2 away win over Enniskerry, well done Stephen and Conor.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 24th FEBRUARY 2013

Our first team made the long journey to Navan on Friday night to take on local side Parkvilla in what was a very important game for the lads, Parkvilla were one place and one point ahead of the lads in the table. After a titanic tussle Rovers put in a very workman like performance to edge out the home team by one goal to nil to claim all three points and leapfrog them in the table. Ian Brannigan provided the match winner on the night firing home a thirty five yard free kick which eases them further away from the bottom end of the table.
The second team earned a share of the spoils when they travelled to North Dublin to take on Rush Athletic and after a tight game Ciaran McGettigan scored the Rovers goal which earned them a point.
The thirds lost narrowly to local rivals Wicklow Town on a 2-1 score line with Michael O’Connor bagging the goal for Rovers.
Our under 16’s exciting journey in the SFAI National Cup came to an end last Saturday afternoon when Mount Merrion of the DDSL defeated them 4-0 in the last 16 at the Whitegates, it has to be said on the day the lads acquitted themselves well and it was just the little things that didn’t go their way been the difference in the game. In a first half which saw them a more than a match for their opponents they somehow found themselves 2-0 down at the break when they deserved more from the half. The second half saw them push forward only for the away side to clinically punish them when they broke. Jimmy, Brian and the lads would like to thank the large support from within the club present and past, it was nice to see so many of our senior, junior and girls section cheering the lads on. Also many thanks to all the people from other clubs in the surrounding areas who came along to support the team.
A big thanks to all the people who supplied sandwiches, crisps, cakes, biscuits, minerals, tea, coffee, etc on the day. Finally we would like to wish Mount Merrion FC the best of luck in the remainder of the competition.
The rest of the junior action in the club was confined to Sunday, our 8B’s lost 7-2 away to Carnew with Brian McCaul and Charlie Doherty getting their names on the score sheet, the 9A’s lost by the minimum margin when they went down 1-0 at home to Ardmore Rovers, the lads were a little rusty in this game and that is probably due to the fact its nearly two months since they last played. Our 10A’s took on their club counterparts the 10B’s, the A’s came out on top in a very sporting game by three goals to nil to maintain their one hundred percent record in the shield, Troy Sutton, Fionn Luddy and Max Kearney netted for the A’s. The 10C’s lost out by the odd goal in five to Greystones Utd with Scott Bushe and Donal O’Donoghue finding the back of the net. The 11A’s made the short journey to Finlay Park to take on local neighbours Wicklow Town and after a close tussle it was the Town who came out on top by two goals to nil. The 11B’s recorded an impressive 4-1 victory over Avonmore with Jamie Noble hitting a brace and both Charlie Christie and Joris Bearda scoring one a piece. Our 12B’s lost 8-3 to a very strong St Fergals side, two goals from Darragh Gibney and one from James Bradshaw accounted for their goals. The 13A’s drew 1-1 with Enniskerry at the Whitegates to make it back to back draws with the same opposition, Ronan Murray scored the goal which assured them a share of the spoils. Our under 13B team maintained their impressive run in the league when they defeated Ardmore Rovers 9-3 at home to keep their one hundred percent record intact. Stephen Finlay hit another hat-trick for the second game running when he notched four goals, Stuart Cox bagged two with James Lang and Jack Gibney getting one each, the ninth goal came from a deflection. The 14A’s were involved in a ten goal thriller with Wolfe Tone with both teams earning a share of the spoils in a 5-5 draw. Two goals from Adam Melia and singles from Shane Devlin, JJ Power and Rory Dowling completed the five goal haul for Rovers. The 15A’s recorded a good away victory over St Anthonys, Adam Copeland, Colin O’Toole and Eoin McAulay all hit the back of the net in a 3-1 win. The 8A’s, 9B’s, 14B’s and 15B’s games were called off.
The under 16 girls defeated St John Bosco in the Rocky Road by two goals to one with Hannah Rose Buckley netting twice for Rovers to double her tally for the season. Both the under 12 and under 14 girls games were called off.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Joe Furlong and Jim McGovern who sadly passed away recently, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time, may they rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 3rd MARCH 2013

On senior front this week it was the second and third teams that were in action with the first team not having a game. The seconds were involved in a tight local derby in the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon against Greystones United and with both teams locked together on the same amount of points in the league it was no surprise that the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw. Sean Tobin hit his sixth goal of the season for Rovers. The third team were unlucky to lose 4-3 in extra time in the quarter final of the division 1 cup away to Wolfe Tone Celtic, coming from 2-0 down to send it to extra time and then they were on the receiving end of some strange decisions which cost them a place in the semi final. Robbie Gill, Darren Kane and John Connors scored their goals.
In the junior section on Saturday we only had the one game, the under 12A’s got their league campaign off to a winning start with a good 2-1 away win over Greystones United. Conor Byrne and Tristan O’Toole were on the score sheet to give them the perfect start. On Sunday the under 8A’s were involved in a seven goal thriller away to Arklow Town, a brace from Aaron Murray and one from Steven Gormley were the Rovers scorers in an unlucky 4-3 defeat. The 8B’s lost 4-0 away to a very strong Coolboy Rangers side. Our 9A’s narrowly defeated Greystones United at home by two goals to one, Mark Hodgkinson and Glen Broughan found the back of the net for Rovers. The 9B’s lost 2-0 away to Ardmore Rovers. The 9C’s played out a 2-2 draw away to Fassaroe YC with Willoughby Woods notching both goals. Our 10A’s made it five wins from five games in the shield when they defeated second placed Roundwood 2-1 in the Hockey Pitch, Troy Sutton nabbed his fifth goal of the season and the other came in the form of an og. The 10C’s had a good win away to local neighbours Wicklow Town, in a close game Rovers edged it by two goals to one with Conor Leonard scoring both. Our 11A’s took on St Anthonys away knowing that a point was the least they required to capture the division 1 title, unfortunately things didn’t go their way on the day losing out 2-1 with Ben Hudson hitting their goal. On the positive side they have another chance to claim the title when they take on Avonmore in their last league game. Congratulations to our under 11B team who claimed the division three title at the weekend and what an exciting game it was, they took on Fassaroe YC in Finn Park, Kilcoole and emerged 4-3 victors in a seven goal thriller, Tom O’Shea found the back of the net twice and his twin brother Joe weighed in with a goal of his own, Daniel Murphy completed the four goal haul which secured them the title. Once again congratulations lads. What a difference a week makes in football, last week our 12B’s were hit for eight by St Fergals in the Whitegates but this week they travelled to Bray to take on the same opposition and earned a share of the points in a 1-1 draw. Ciaran Byrne scored their goal, under 11A goalkeeper Liam Connolly was outstanding in a good all round team performance. The 14B’s lost 6-3 at home to Avonmore, goal scoring machine Alfie Heather hit all three goals for Rovers. Our 15A’s made it two wins from two when they defeated league leaders Arklow United 3-1 at the Whitegates, goals from Adam Copeland, Eoin McAulay and Kevin O’Halloran helped them close the gap on the leaders to three points with a couple of games in hand. The 15B’s earned a good point away to Ardmore Rovers to consolidate their position at the top of the table, Luke Purdy and James Hayes Kavanagh hit the goals in a 2-2 draw.
In the girls section the under 12’s made it four wins on the bounce with a narrow 1-0 away win over Shankill, Sarah Evans scored her first of the season to gain all three points for her team. The 14’s good cup run came to an end at the hands of Shelbourne at the semi final stage when they were defeated 3-1, Clarisse Broughan scored the Rovers goal in what was a good cup run. The 16’s lost 2-1 away to Quay Celtic with Clodagh Fox notching the goal.
In the hat-trick club this week is goal scoring machine Alfie Heather who hit his fourth hat-trick of the season [which also includes a double hat-trick] for the 14B’s in their 6-3 defeat to Avonmore to bring his tally for the season to twenty.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 10th MARCH 2013

The second team were the only senior team in action at the weekend, they took on Rathcoole Boys at the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon and a goal from leading scorer Warren Gormley ensured a share of the points in a 1-1 draw and a repeat of the same score line when the sides met earlier in the season.
The weather took its toll on Saturday in the junior section with the under 9B’s, 10A’s, 11B’s, 12A’s, 14B’s and 15A’s games all been cancelled. The only junior game to take place Saturday was the under 13A’s, they entertained Ashford Rovers in the Whitegates and recorded a 4-2 win to make it two wins and two draws from four league games. Leading scorer Adam Byrne scored one to take his tally to eleven for the season while Jack Dunne and Eli Graham both have four for the season after scoring one a piece. Patrick O’Keane notched his first of the campaign to complete the scoring. Sunday saw another day of cancellations with the majority of games falling victims to the weather. The under 12 and under 14 girls had their games cancelled, the under 9A’s, 9C’s, 10C’s, 11A’s, 12B’s and 14A’s all saw their matches lose out to mother nature. On the playing front the under 8A’s secured a narrow 1-0 win over Wolfe Tone with leading scorer Aaron Murray bagging his eleventh goal of the campaign. Our 11B’s were knocked out at the quarter final stage of the division one cup losing 5-1 to a very strong Arklow United side, Rovers consolation in this game was the first goal of the season for Sean Murphy. The under 16’s lost 2-0 away to Arklow Town, the lads turned in a very rusty performance and part of the problem here seems to be the stop/start nature of their season regarding games played.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th MARCH 2013

Both the first and second teams were in action at the weekend, the seconds travelled to Newbridge on Saturday to take on Newbridge Town, after a close match they lost out narrowly by one goal to nil. The first team got the Paddy’s Day celebrations off to an early start when they defeated Greystones United in the second round of the Moore Cup at the Whitegates on Sunday morning. The away side came to Wicklow full of confidence for this game after going to the top of the league last week but Rovers had other ideas. In a tough battle with no quarter given by either side this was a game where every player gave his all. It was a game which always looked like one goal was going to win it and thankfully it was the lads who scored it. In what was probably the move of the match Rovers attacked up the right wing with Stephen Earls, Greg Dunne, Mark O’Sullivan and Paul O’Neill all involved, Rovers rattled the crossbar but Mark O’Sullivan was on hand to sweep the ball home for the decisive goal and a safe passage to the next round. The Rovers defence of Stephen Earls, Ricki Quinn, Jamie Snell, Ian Brannigan and in the second half Steven Moran were solid through out while the ever green Greg Dunne and his partner Anthony Doran put in a good shift in the middle of the park. This victory against the league leaders should be a great confidence booster for the lads for the remainder of the season in their quest to climb up the league and also hopefully progress further in the cup.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 24th MARCH 2013

Well it was the weather that won out again, just when we thought we were going to get a run of games mother nature reared its head again. The heavy rain on Friday was the reason for a lot of cancellations. A couple of games that did beat the weather involved the 8A’s and 10C’s. The 8A’s made the short journey to Ashford to take on Ashford Rovers A, they returned home with a good 3-0 victory, Aaron Murray scored one to take his total to twelve for the season, Sam Christie and Rory Hennessy both netted one a piece to make it three for the season for both players. The 10C’s lost out 5-3 away to Arklow Town B in what was a thriller of a game, Finn Egan Barron notched his ninth goal of the season, Scott Bushe found the back of the net for his third of the campaign while Aaron Lynch’s second goal of the season completed the total.
The weather wiped out all three girls matches and the one scheduled senior match.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 31st MARCH 2013

This week saw very little football been played due to the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, all juniors, both boys and girls were free from games at the weekend. On the senior front the second and third teams had no games, that left the first team been the only team in the club to play. They entertained Kilnamanagh FC in the Whitegates on Sunday morning in what was an important match in their battle to pull away from the bottom end of the table. They went into this game against fourth placed Kilnamanagh full of confidence on the back of their cup success against league leaders Greystones United in their last game. Rovers short of some regulars started on the front foot and went in front on ten minutes when Jamie Snell headed home a Mark O’Sullivan cross from a free kick. In a fairly even first half both sides had half chances to add further goals but the game remained one nil to Rovers at the break. The second period saw the away side have a lot of the ball in the first twenty minutes of the half, Paul Alexander marshalled his well disciplined defence superbly and Robert Hollingsworth in the Rovers goal was excellent to prevent Kilnamanagh getting back on level terms. Rovers had chances of their own in the second period, Sean Tobin twice, Ricki Quinn and Steven Moran all went close to extending the Rovers lead. With five minutes left on the clock Rovers did nab the insurance goal when substitute Joe Quinn fired home from just inside the area to make it 2-0 and earn Rovers three valuable points in their quest to climb the table. This win now makes it three wins on the bounce for the lads. On the day Robert Hollingsworth, Paul Alexander, Jamie Snell, Ricki Quinn, Mark Johnson and Mark O’Sullivan were all in excellent form for Rovers. Full match report on club website.

It was forth versus fifth when the under 16’s took on Peamount Utd at the Whitegates and at the end there was nothing to separate the two teams as they played out a 2-2 draw. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 28th APRIL 2013

The first team were involved in midweek action when they took on local rivals Greystones Utd on Wednesday in the Whitegates, after a tough encounter the spoils were shared in what probably was a fair outcome to the game. Greystones went in front with fifteen minutes left but Rovers battled back and Tommy Kelly equalised with five minutes remaining to earn the lads a valuable point. Things didn’t go well for the first team in their cup quarter final against Templeogue Utd on Sunday, in what was a bad day at the office, they were comprehensively beaten 5-0 with the team falling way below the standard we all know there capable of. The third team went down 4-1 to title chasing Celtic Stars with Ciaran McGettigan scoring their goal.
On the junior front, midweek action saw the under 9A’s record a narrow 1-0 away victory courtesy of a Joseph Neilan goal. Our 9B’s lost 5-2 away to a strong St Patricks A team with leading scorer Sean O’Meara scoring a brace. The 10C’s shared the points in a 2-2 draw with Greystones Utd, Patrick Owens nabbed his first of the campaign with Finn Egan Barron scoring the second. The 11B’s kept their good run in the shield going when they defeated Fassaroe YC 2-1 away with a goal from Nedis Valindis and the second coming by the way of an og. Our 12A’s were involved in a highly exciting and entertaining match with Arklow Town A which ended in a scoreless draw despite plenty of goalmouth action from both sides. The 14B’s had a great win away to Coolboy Rgrs by five goals to nil. Luca Rampersaud, Sean Algera, Jack Dunne, Shane Devlin and Adam Melia were all on the score sheet. Our under 15A’s won a hard earned three points at home to St Anthonys on a 4-2 scoreline, Ross Quinn helped himself to a hat-trick with Eoin McAulay getting one. The under 15B’s went goal crazy knocking in an amazing seventeen goals in a 17-1 victory at home to Avonmore, Riain Sweetman Burke and James Hayes Kavanagh amazingly hit double hat-tricks scoring six each, Ethan Sillery, Niall Dowd, Dale Browne, Luke Purdy and Oisin Breen all hit singles.
On Saturday our under 13A’s defeated Greystones Utd A 2-1 to claim the Premier shield, a goal from leading scorer Adam Byrne and one from Jack Dunne laid the foundations for this victory, congratulations to Boodhan and his squad. Our 8B’s lost 4-2 away to a strong St Patricks A side with Liam Burke notching a brace. The under 15B’s went goal crazy for the second game running, this time they hit seven winning 7-0 away to Greystones Utd A, Riain Sweetman Burke and Josh Browne hit two a piece with Mark Darragh, Ethan Sillery and Dale Browne all adding singles. Our under 16’s had a good win at home to Arklow Town A, in what was a tough match with no quarter given by both sides, Rovers narrowly won out 1-0 courtesy of a Kieran Bloomfield goal. On Sunday our 8A’s defeated Rathnew 6-2, Aaron Murray and Peter Dunne scored two each with singles from Aran Cavanagh and Steven Gormley completing the scoring. The 10A’s won 5-2 against Greystones Utd, the highlight of this game was a fantastic hat-trick from Conor Lewins, Mark O’Brien and Max Kearney nabbed one each. The 11A’s earned a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw away to Coolboy Rgrs with Joseph Neilan and Nathan Sullivan scoring their goals. The 11B’s went down 4-0 to a strong Wolfe Tone team in the quarter final of the cup. Congratulations to our under 14A’s who won the division 1 shield beating Coolboy Rgrs 3-0, goals from Matthew Traynor, JJ Power and Rory Dowling gave them a well deserved win, well done to Rene, Mark and the team. Also congratulations to our under 15A team who captured the under 15 Premier shield when they defeated Arklow Utd in Aughrim on a 3-0 scoreline, Ross Quinn set them on their way with Eoin McAulay scoring the second, the third goal came from a wicked deflection off an Arklow player. Well done to Stephen, Mick and the squad. Once again well done to all involved with the under 13A’s, 14A’s and 15A’s, three wins from three shield finals at the weekend is as good as it gets.
In girls action at the weekend the under 12’s won 3-2 at home to Balbriggan, leading scorer Niamh Caffrey scored two and Sinead McGettigan added a single in an exciting game. The under 16’s travelled away to Ratoath Harps and came home with all three points after a 6-1 win, Hannah Rose Buckley hit the back of the net three time for a fantastic hat-trick, Ally Webb notched two and Chloe Brennan completed the scoring.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th MAY 2013

The first team were involved in midweek action when they travelled to take on Templeogue Utd in the league, after suffering a heavy defeat in the cup to the same opponents last week, the lads gained a certain amount of revenge when they defeated Templeogue 1-0 in a very tight game to gain all three points to move them up to mid table in the league. Luke Byrne scored the only goal of the game. They completed a good week when they picked up a good point in 0-0 away draw with title chasing Ballyfermot Utd on Sunday in a good all round team performance.
The second team received a walkover when Swords Celtic failed to turn up for their fixture on Saturday afternoon.
In the junior section during the week, the 10A’s defeated Roundwood 3-1 with a brace from Max Kearney and one from Fionn Luddy. Our 10B’s won a five goal thriller against Greystones Utd C by a score of 3-2, Evan Dwyer, Ryan Kavanagh and Sean Murphy all hit the back of the net. The 10C’s recorded an excellent 5-0 win over Greystones Utd E, a brace a piece from Finn Egan Barron and Conor Leonard with Luke Long adding the fifth accounted for their total. The 12A’s gained an excellent point away to Arklow Town A in a 1-1 draw, Keith Carty gave them the lead before Arklow drew level with fifteen minutes remaining. Our 12B’s had two games during the week narrowly losing both by the minimum margin, first they lost 3-2 to Little Bray Utd with Fionn Matthews and Ryan Murphy nabbing their goals. On Wednesday they lost to Glencormac Utd by one goal to nil. The under 14A’s lost 4-1 to Arklow Utd A with Eddy Geraghty getting their goal. The 14B’s went down 4-1 to Arklow Utd B, Evan Doyle scoring for the B’s. The 16’s beat St Anthonys 6-0 with Darragh O’Connor plundering a hat-trick, Liam Kavanagh, Andrew O’Brien and Alan Power all hit singles. Our under 13A’s game with Ashford Rovs came to a premature end on Thursday when Wicklow player Ben Watson received a serious injury in an accidental clash, everyone at the club would like to wish Ben a speedy recovery from his injury and we look forward to seeing him back on the playing pitch very soon. The club would like to thank the parents from both teams who helped look after Ben while waiting for an ambulance, many thanks to Ashford Rovers, the referee and the parents for their help in this unfortunate accident.
On Saturday the under 8B’s were well beaten, losing 5-0 to a very strong Carnew side. Our under 9B’s won 3-0 away to Ardmore Rovs. B, two goals from leading scorer Sean O’Meara and one from Leo De Courcy laid the foundations for an excellent win, Kyle Corrigan had an excellent game in the Rovers goal with Zach Harris, Oran Dempsey and Tom Wilkinson all playing well.
On Sunday our 9A’s won 5-3 away to Ardmore Rovs, a hat-trick from Joseph Neilan and one a piece from Chris Bouchier and Mark Hodgkinson were the scorers on the day. The under 10A’s won 3-0 against Greystones Utd C, Fionn Luddy hit a brace and Try Sutton got the other. The 11A’s beat Roundwood on penalties in the semi final of the Premier cup, the match ended 1-1 with Robbie Hoffman scoring, Nathan Sullivan scored the decisive penalty. Our under 12A’s kept up their challenge for the title with a hard earned three points away to Newtown Juniors, after a close encounter a goal from Conor Byrne gave them a 1-0 win. Performance of the weekend must go to our under 12B’s, week after week this group of players turn up hail, rain or snow, for training and matches. During the course of the season they had failed to win a game even though they came close a couple of times drawing on both occasions when they probably should have won. Well they had their day last Sunday morning, at half time it looked the same old story, 1-0 down but had the chances to be in front but what a second half they put in, two smashing goals from Ryan Murphy and a cracker from Fionn Matthews saw them deservedly turn the game around to win 3-1 in a good all round team performance. A lot of credit must be given to Brendan Porter and Michael Galligan for all their hard work with this team. Well done lads. Our 14B’s went down 6-0 to a good Arklow Town side. The 15B’s kept their good run going with a 6-3 win away to Enniskerry, two from Josh Browne and one each from Riain Sweetman Burke, Robbie Dunne, Ethan Sillery and James Hayes Kavanagh scored their goals.
Only two entrants in the hat-trick club this week, Darragh O’Connor hit three goals for the under 16’s in their 6-0 home win over St Anthonys on Thursday night and Joseph Neilan hit three for the 9A’s in their 5-3 win over Ardmore Rovs., well done Darragh and Joseph.
Congratulations to Colin and Vicky O’Brien on the arrival of baby Fiadh during the week, everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous future.

Congratulations once again to the lads and their managers Jimmy Nolan and Brian O’Connor.
On Saturday the under 9A’s beat Rathnew 5-1 with Joseph Neilan and Conor Hunter nabbing two goals each with Mark Hodgkinson scoring one.
Sunday saw the club involved in four finals, the under 10A’s were first up when they emerged victorious in the division one cup final winning 2-1 against Ashford Rovers, Mark O’Brien and Fionn Luddy scored the all important goals in a good all round team performance. Well done to Mick Kearney, Gerry Lewins and the lads. The under 13A’s lost out 4-2 to Greystones Utd in the premier cup final, Patrick O’Keane and Luca Rampersaud were on the score sheet in a game they were always chasing. Hard luck to Boodhan and the lads but the league is still up for grabs with the shield already in the bag. Up next was the under 11A’s as they took on Arklow Town A in the premier cup final, after an exciting game the lads lost out 4-2, Frankie Reynolds and Scott Sheridan notched the goals for Rovers. Hard luck to Willie, Peter and the lads who have had a great season having already won the league. The last final saw the under 12A’s take on Arklow Town A for the premier shield, after an exciting close battle recent form between these two sides continued, the game was close through out with both sides having their chances to win, the match ended 1-1 after extra time meaning this was the third game in succession these teams have ended all square. Ryan Corrigan scored a screamer from a twenty five yard free kick to level the game after Arklow led. The game was decided by a dreaded penalty shoot out with Rovers winning 4-1. Fiachra O’Briain, Ryan Corrigan, Dylan Frazer and Sean Leonard all scored from the spot with Sean Coffey making two excellent saves from well struck Arklow penalties. Well done John, Matt and the lads. Once again well done to our 10A’s, 11A’s, 12A’s, 13A’s and 16A’s on your achievements at the weekend.
We had three players in the hat-trick club this week, two were under 9C players, Willoughby Woods hit three for the 9C’s in their 6-2 win over Greystones Utd and at the weekend Kai Fitzsimmons scored four when they beat Arklow Utd. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th MAY 2013

The first team were in midweek action away to St Mochtas FC, after a close encounter they lost out narrowly by a goal to nil. They also played on Sunday and recorded a good win defeating CYM Terenure by two goals to one with Luke Byrne scoring both.
There was plenty of action during the week in our junior section, on Tuesday the under 10A’s completed a good week when they qualified for the final of the shield after they defeated Ashford Rovers 2-1 for the second time in the space of three days having defeated the same opponents in the cup final on Sunday, this time it was goals from Troy Sutton and Conor Lewins who set them on their way. Five games took place on Wednesday night, the under 9A’s continued their good run with a 3-2 success over Greystones Utd to make it seven wins on the bounce, Joseph Neilan, Conor Hunter and Glen Broughan scored their goals. The under 16’s who won the premier league and shield completed their fixture schedule with a tough 2-1 away victory against Coolboy Rangers, a goal a piece from captain Liam Kavanagh and top scorer Kieran Bloomfield ensured they finished their campaign with a good win over a very strong Coolboy side. On Thursday night our 11A’s went down 2-0 to a physically bigger Arklow Town team, this was a cracking game of football with the Wicklow team more than a match for their opponents. The lads deserved to take something from the game with the away team keeper pulling off some fantastic saves to deny Rovers. The under 14A’s went down 3-1 away to Wolfe Tone, Sean Algera scored the Rovers goal for his fifth of the season. Friday night saw the under 15A’s add the premier cup to their already shield win, they defeated Arklow United again this time on a score of 4-1, highlight of the game was an excellent hat-trick from Ross Quinn to bring his total for the season to twenty two. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th MAY 2013

The first team are coming to the end of their campaign, last Wednesday they suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to CYM Terenure, with one game to go they sit safely in mid table in their first season in intermediate football so hopefully next season they can push on and be in a challenging position for promotion.
Midweek action in our junior section saw the under 8A's record a very good 4-1 away win over Wolfe Tone, highlight of this game was an excellent hat-trick from Charlie Phelan with Peter Dunne scoring the fourth. The 9C's were involved in an eight goal thriller with Greystones Utd, with the game eventually ending level at 4-4. Willoughby Woods hit the net twice with David Butler and Kai Fitzsimmons getting one each. Our under 11B's required a point to reach the division 2 shield final but it wasn't to be, losing 3-0 to Wolfe Tone, this result means they must take on Avonmore in a play off to see who will provide the opposition for Wolfe Tone in the final. The 12B's played their last game losing 6-1 to high flying Little Bray Utd, Ryan Murphy scored the Rovers goal. Another team to suffer disappointment during the week was our 13B's, they took on nearest challengers Wolfe Tone in Bray with the knowledge that a point would land them the title but the lost narrowly 2-1 with Stuart Cox nabbing their goal. Their consolation is they know at the worst they are guaranteed a playoff for the title if Wolfe Tone win their last game. Anything less than three points for Wolfe Tone and Rovers will be crowned champions. Better news for our two under 15 teams, the A's started the week requiring six points from four games to win the league and complete the treble, they started with a comprehensive 9-2 win at home to Arklow Town on Wednesday, Eoin McAulay smashed home an incredible four goals, hot on his heels was Adam Copeland who fired home an excellent hat-trick, Brian O'Sullivan and Rian Daunt Smyth weighed in with singles. They captured the league title on Saturday when they beat Aughrim Rgrs 5-1 with a brace from Colin O’Toole and singles from Eoin McAulay, Andrew Earls and Rian Daunt Smyth, this win saw them win the treble of league, cup and shield, congratulations to Stephen, Mick and the lads. The under 15B's earned promotion back to the premier division when they lifted the division one title when they defeated Avonmore 6-1 on Thursday night, quick silver striker James Hayes Kavanagh hit a brace, Robbie Dunne, Ethan Sillery, Josh Browne and Riain Sweetman Burke all hit one a piece in a well deserved success. Congratulations to Peter, Marc, Phil, Alan and the squad on their success. On Saturday morning our under 11A’s defeated Coolboy Rgrs 6-1, Paul Marah scored a splendid hat-trick, Josh Watson and Brandon O’Brien scored one each with the other goal coming in the shape of an own goal. On Sunday there was disappointment for our under 11B’s and 13A’s, the 11B’s lost 6-1 to Avonmore in the division 2 shield playoff in a bid to reach the final, Tom O’Shea got their lone goal, the under 13A’s were soundly beaten 5-0 by Avonmore which saw the Rathdrum outfit lift the premier league title. Our 9A’s had an excellent 5-0 win over Arklow Town A, two goals from Chris Bouchier and one each from Glen Broughan, Aaron Murphy and Matthew Harbourne accounted for their goals. The 9C’s lost 3-2 to FassaroeYC with Kai Fitzsimmons and Willoughby Woods netting their goals. Our 10A’s warmed up for their shield final with a 5-0 victory over Enniskerry, a brace from Conor Lewins and a goal each from Fionn Luddy, Lee Hamilton and Max Kearney were their scorers on the day. The 10C’s shared six goals with Greystones Utd in a 3-3 draw with Conor Leonard scoring two and Finn Egan Barron nabbing the other.
Currently the club are advertising for managers for our three senior teams which compete in the Leinster Senior League [Senior 1B] and [Saturday Major 1C] and the Wicklow League [Div 2], anyone interested in applying to manage one of these teams should contact club secretary Franny Copeland at 087-7589322 or by email at

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd JUNE 2013

With the season drawing to a close and a lot of teams now finished up we had a limited amount of games last week. All the junior action took place midweek and I suppose the highlight was our 10A's completing the double last Tuesday night adding the division 1 shield to their already success in the cup. In a highly entertaining and exciting game played in a good spirit the lads ran out 3-2 winners in a five goal thriller against Ashford Rovers. Goals from Max Kearney, Fionn Luddy and Conor Lewins ensured the shield was on its way to the Whitegates. Both teams deserve a lot credit for putting on an excellent end to end game of football. Elsewhere our 8B's lost out 3- 2 to Coolboy Rangers, Tom Phelan scored one of the goals with the other goal coming in the form of an own goal. The 9B's went down 2-0 away to Greystones United. Our 15A's finished off their season in style knocking in fourteen goals against Wolfe Tone. Rain Daunt Smyth led the way hitting the back if the net four times followed closely by Andrew Earls who netted a hat-trick. Ross Quinn helped himself to a brace with Eoin McAulay, Colin O'Toole, Brian O'Sullivan, Oisin Daunt Smyth and an own goal accounting for the other scores.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th JUNE 2013

Well the curtain finally came down on the playing end of business within the club during the week, on Tuesday night the under 13B's went down 4-2 after extra time against Wolfe Tone A in a play off for the division two league title. The lads raced into a 2-0 lead early on thanks to well taken strikes from Cormac Murray and Dean Noble and then had a couple of good chances to extend their lead but unfortunately they didn't take them and it came back to haunt them. Wolfe Tone came roaring back with a goal just before the break and an equaliser after a couple of minutes of the second period. Both teams had chances in the second half but failed to take them and it was on to extra time where the Bray team proved the stronger adding two goals to claim the title. Congratulations to David Cox, John Rice and the team on a good season that went down to the last game. The under 12A's suffered heartbreak on Thursday night when they failed in their quest to add the premier league title to their success in the premier shield. They took on Arklow Town A in a play off for the title in Shamrock Park in Rathnew, they didn't get off to a great start conceding two quick goals midway through the first half but to their credit they battled on and didn't drop their heads. Arklow ran out 2-0 winners in the end but the lads showed great character when things weren't going their way, they knuckled down and hung in there when a couple of seasons back their heads would have dropped. It has been a great season for this team winning the premier shield and coming runners up in the premier league after a play off, they have been involved in some titanic games with Arklow Town this season with very little between them. Prior to this game the sides had drawn in their last three meetings with Rovers winning the shield on a penalty shootout. Congratulations to John Frazer, Matt Lincoln and their team on a great season. Our 13A’s season petered out to a disappointing end, they took on Enniskerry in a play off for runners up position in the premier league and even though they were short of five regulars they kept the game competitive during the first period. At the break they found themselves 2-1 down but the more experienced Enniskerry outfit pulled away in the second period finally winning 7-2. Rovers goalscorers on the day were Eli Graham and Ciaran Coffey. Well done to Boodhan and his squad on winning the premier shield and getting runners up in the cup.

Congratulations to club secretary Franny Copeland who received the WDSL club  person of the year award at the WDSL awards on Sunday in the Grand Hotel. This award is well deserved to a man who has put a lot of work into the club in recent times, no matter when his called, he always makes himself available to help out in anyway. He carries out his own duties as club secretary, fixtures secretary for 11 a side in the WDSL and runs the club shop and then is always on hand to help out in other ways. This recognition for Franny is well deserved and everyone at Wicklow Rovers would like to say well done, congratulations and thanks for all your hard work Franny.

Wicklow Rovers are currently seeking volunteers to help with the running of the club. A lot of work is required with running a club of our size, at present we have a very small committee of six people who are snowed under with a heavy work load which is causing a slow momentum in the progression of our club. We do have a number of people who help around the grounds and on our sub committees, we have a new child liaison officer and health & safety officer coming on board. As you can see we are always trying to improve our facilities, in recent times some of the projects carried out were as follows: 1. Extension and marking of car park; 2. Completion of perimeter fence/Internal gates; 3. Refurbishing of club meeting room; 4. Refurbishing of dressing rooms; 5. Painting of clubhouse; 6. Presently installing dugouts. The growth and further improvements within the club are been held back and not progressing at the pace we would like due to the lack of manpower, we could really do with people coming on board to help the club forward. People shouldn’t be afraid to put themselves forward to help out as you wont be loaded down with work, we would be grateful for any help what so ever, even if its something small that you can help out with, every little bit helps. There is a lot involved in the running a club our size,  especially one with approximately 26 teams. Please think of the future, think of the kids who love the sport of soccer, think of what we could all achieve with more help. With a bigger executive committee, more sub committees and more people helping out, all working together we could protect our club while growing and improving all the time. Please don’t assume someone else will do the work, step forward, volunteer and help us out in whatever capacity you can. If you feel you have something to offer don’t hesitate to contact any of the following people, Paul Delaney @ 0863700320, Jimmy Nolan @ 0879108706 or Franny Copeland @ 0877589332.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 14th JULY 2013

The clubs annual summer soccer camp was a huge success, the first week saw 64 kids take part while week two saw 92 kids enjoy a week of fun and games. In tropical weather conditions over the two weeks it was a great turn out of kids and everyone seem to have a great time. The club would like to thank Johnny and his coaches for all their work over the two weeks. A big thanks to Debbie Bouchier who helped out with the registration over the two weeks as well as doing other bits and pieces during the camp. We would also like to thank the parents of the kids for their continuous support every year to make the camp such a success. Last but not least a big thanks to all the young footballers who make it worth while, they were a pleasure to coach and everyone mixed in well to have an enjoyable time. Photos from the camp have been posted on the club facebook page and on the club website at www.wicklowrovers.com    Once again thanks to everyone for your continuous support.

As you can see the dugouts are coming on well, they are at the roofing stage now and then they’ll be plastered and painted. They were built big enough so people could stand up without hitting their heads of the ceiling and can easily accommodate 8 to 10 people. When the dugouts are finished we would ask all club members and visiting players to take their rubbish with them and dispose of it in the bins provided in the grounds and not to leave it in the dugouts or around the club grounds. Also with the clubhouse just been painted we would please ask all members not to be kicking footballs against the clubhouse, by doing this all your doing is ruining the walls of the clubhouse which in turn makes it look shabby and dirty. We would ask all managers and parents to please make sure your kids don’t use the walls for kicking football against, this would be much appreciated, thanks.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 4th AUGUST 2013

Last week saw Bray Wanderers come to town to take on our senior team in a friendly in aid of the Robbie Robinson fund. The lads took the game to a young Bray outfit and some good saves from the Bray netminder kept the match scoreless at the break. Shortly into the second period Bray were awarded a penalty, former Wicklow Rovers schoolboy Adam Cox stepped up and coolly slotted past Tommy Dunne in the Rovers goal to give Bray the lead. Rovers responded well and ten minutes later they were on level terms when Jim Foley forced the ball home to tie the game at 1-1 which proved to be the final result. Both teams have to be commended in giving their all in a highly entertaining game played in front of a large crowd. On the night a draw was probably a fair outcome of the game. The club would like to thank Pat Devlin, Jack O'Neill and the Bray Wanderers team for providing us with the opposition for the occasion. Thanks to the match officials David Jameson, Mick Quinn and Michael Kennedy who done an excellent job. Also on the night we had the 1967 European Cup trophy on display, the trophy won by Celtic when they defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon to become the first British club to win the trophy was brought along on the night courtesy of Chris Hanney. People had their photos taken with the cup. The club would like to thank Chris for this fantastic gesture, it was much appreciated. Also a big thanks to all the adults and kids who supported this charity event, finally thanks to all the club officials and members who helped out on the night. Midweek an under strength first team lost 4-1 away to Arklow Town while on Saturday they went down 2-0 to a very good North End United from Wexford. The second team also played North End United and they lost out by four goals to one. Thanks to both clubs for providing the opposition in these pre-season friendlies.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th AUGUST 2013

Our first team got off the mark winning a hard earned point away to Skerries Town on Sunday, Darren Kavanagh put them in front but the home team hit back with two goals to take the lead. The lads showed great character to battle back with Maurice Dunne notching his second goal of the campaign to earn the team a share of the spoils.
The second team were unlucky not to get something out of their home match against Newbridge Town last Saturday, after an even start to the game Newbridge went ahead just before the half hour mark, the away side doubled their lead on sixty six minutes some what against the run of play in the second half. The lads pulled one back a minute later when Conor Tobin made a good run down the right firing a low hard cross into the area for Ciaran McGettigan to slam home his second goal in as many matches to make it 2-1. Rovers controlled the last twenty minutes piling forward in search of an equaliser and in the last minute they thought they had scored what they thought was the leveller only for the referee to rule it out for offside. In fairness the lads deserved a draw at the very least from this game.
The club’s AGM will be held in the clubhouse in The Whitegates on Wednesday the 25th September at 7.30 pm, everyone is welcome to attend.

Wicklow Rovers AFC promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and seniors in the community, our club is growing all the time and any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated. At present we have a very small hard working committee but a lot of work is been placed on the shoulders of six people who are carrying out several duties within the club, we could do with other people stepping up to help out. We are always on the look out for people interested in helping out, the club are always on the look out for people who are interested in getting involved in soccer, whether on the executive committee or a sub committee,  help with fundraising or help just around the grounds or in anyway at all, don’t hesitate, get involved. If the club were to get one volunteer from each team within the club do help out for one season and then someone else represents that team the following season, the club would be in a much stronger position, anyone interested in helping out the club in anyway can contact any committee member or email club secretary Franny Copeland at

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st SEPTEMBER 2013

The first team gained three valuable points last Wednesday night at the Whitegates when they defeated Glenmore/Dundrum in a highly entertaining seven goal thriller. Rovers went in front through Mark O'Sullivan only then to concede a soft equaliser. Rovers pushed forward through out the game and their attacking play was rewarded, Maurice Dunne stepped into the spotlight claiming an excellent hat-trick. All three goals were clinically dispatched to give the lads a 4-1 lead. The referee somehow found an additional eight minutes which saw a fight back from the away side scoring two goals in added time but the lads held on to gain all three points. Full match report on club website.
Our second team were in action in a local derby away to Greystones Utd on Saturday, with the team still getting to know each other they unfortunately went down 2-0. They gave it their all but on the day it wasn't enough. Ciaran McGettigan and Shane Morley were the best players for on the day.
Last Sunday week the 25th of August saw our 11A's travel across to the other side of the Wicklow mountains to take part in the Kildare Summer Cup Competition with 15 other teams from around the country. An action packed day with plenty of quality football and good sportsmanship was enjoyed by all. The competition provided some excellent and exciting football to entertain the supporters. Against strong opposition our under 11A team advanced from their group to progress to the semi final where they took on a very strong Portlaoise side. After an exciting game, it was defences that came out on top as the match ended scoreless but as 0-0 matches go this game provided excitement to keep both sets of supporters on the edge of their seats. Now it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout, the shootout proved to be a nail biting affair with Rovers progressing to the final winning 4-3 from the spot kicks. Successful from the penalty spot for Rovers were Harry Hodgkinson, Fionn Luddy, Sam Bishop and Max Kearney. Andrew Nolan in the Rovers goal saved the last spot kick to book his sides place in the final. Their opposition in the final came in the shape Fettercairn of Tallaght and in a hard fought match Rovers emerged victorious over their Dublin opponents coming out on top by a 3-1 score line. A lot of good football was on show from both teams in what proved to be a highly entertaining final. Max Kearney bagged himself two goals with Sam Bishop slotting home the other goal to spark off wild celebrations for the boys in green. Through out the tournament the whole squad turned in consistent displays and were worthy winners. Congratulations to Mick, Gerry and the lads on a fantastic victory. Many thanks to Kildare FC for the invite and congratulations to them on a well organised event.
Currently the club are seeking players for our under 9 [Born 2005], 10 [Born 2004], 11 [Born 2003] and 12 [Born 2002] age groups, anyone interested in playing can contact John Frazer at 0870564394 or Johnny Dunne at 0877802098. Alternatively you can contact any committee member.
We would like to let everyone know that our club registration night this coming Friday the 6th of September has been cancelled due to the World Cup qualifier between the Republic of Ireland and Sweden. All other registration nights will be held as advertised, a new date will be scheduled to replace the cancelled night.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their deepest sympathies to founder member Billy Dunne and his family on the sad passing of Eileen. Eileen was an active member of the club's women's committee in the early days when the club was formed, she was always on hand to help out in anyway, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may she rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 29th SEPTEMBER’13

The first team travelled to the Iveagh Grounds to take on St James Gate on Friday night, the Gate had won their four games to date without conceding a goal. The lads lost narrowly by a goal to nil and with a bit of luck they could have got something from the game. They rattled the woodwork, had a goal disallowed and controlled the game for large periods. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st DECEMBER 2013

The first team drew 1-1 at home to CYM Terenure, this result means they have lost only once in their last eight games. The negative side of the run is that five games ended in draws, all by the same score line of 1-1. Sean Duffy scored for the second game running to put them in front only to concede an equaliser with fifteen minutes remaining. If they have visions of making the top three they will have to start turning draws into wins in order to make ground in the promotion chase.
The second team took on Wayside Celtic who ply their trade two leagues higher than the lads in the third round of the Leinster Junior Cup. The higher ranked side ran out convincing winners by a score of 5-1. Rovers went in front through Ian Brannigan but when the away side drew level their experience of higher football stood them well as they added four more goals without reply.
Our under 17’s travelled to take on Avonmore on Saturday and to the disappointment of both sets of coaches, players and supporters no referee turned up.
Saturdays action in the junior section saw the under 8A’s continue their good form with an exciting 3-2 win over St Anthonys, Liam Bourke scored an excellent hat-trick in this game. Our fast improving 9B’s have now made it three wins and a draw from their last four games when they defeated Greystones Utd 2-1, a goal a piece from Sam Culleton and Charlie Doherty paved the way for this victory. The 12A’s played out a tight 0-0 draw with Roundwood, even though the game ended scoreless there was a lot of exciting football on show. The 12B’s lost 4-1 away to Arklow Town, Charlie Christie hit his third goal of the campaign in this game. Our under 13A’s made their exit from the SFAI Cup at the hands of Tullamore Town in the Whitegates, after a first half which saw the lads have the away side on the rack at times it was Tullamore who finished the game the stronger scoring three second half goals to win 3-0. In fairness the final result wasn’t a true reflection on the game, as for a long time the match could have went either way. The 14B’s were involved in a scoreless draw with Wolfe Tone, like the 12A game there was a lot of exciting goalmouth action in this game and how it finished scoreless is a mystery.
On Sunday the under 8B’s lost 3-1 away to Aughrim Rgrs, Steven Kavanagh hit the Rovers goal. The 9A’s lost 4-2 to Greystones Utd, Cole Byrne nabbed both the Wicklow goals. The 10A’s defeated league leaders Greystones Utd A in a five goal thriller, a brace from Joseph Neilan and one from Conor Hunter earned them all three points in a 3-2 win which see’s them leap frog Greystones to go top, [Full match report will be posted on club website]. Our 11A’s completed their league schedule and maintained their one hundred percent record when they comprehensively defeated Arklow Town A 9-2. A hat-trick from Fionn Luddy, two each from Max Kearney and Harry Hodgkinson and singles from Conor Lewins and Ryan Kavanagh ensures they remain unbeaten in 2013. The 11B’s lost an exciting game 3-2 against Ashford Rovs, Evan Dwyer and Finn Egan Barron hit the back of the net for Rovers. Our 14A’s remain unbeaten after they won 8-0 away to St Anthonys, a splendid hat-trick from Stuart Cox, a brace from Luca Rampersaud and one each from Stephen Finlay, Jack Dunne and Ben Watson accounted for their goals. Two goals each from Rory Dowling and Mitchell Kelly kept the under 15’s good run going as they claimed all three points in a 4-1 victory over Coolboy Rgrs. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 8th DECEMBER 2013

The first team continued their unbeaten run but they are fast becoming the draw specialists in the league. They have now drawn their last six league matches, with a prolific goalscorer in their ranks a lot of those drawn games could have been turned into wins. It was the same old story against Lucan Utd at the weekend, lots of chances but failing to take them is costing them dearly. The game ended 0-0 and the talk is what could have been, hopefully our luck in front of goal will change soon.
The second teams poor form continued at the weekend when they went down 3-1 away to Farm Utd, leading scorer Ciaran McGettigan kept up his good form in front of goal with his seventh of the season. The under 17’s lost 2-0 to Rathnew at the Whitegates on Saturday in a game were the lads never really got going. Rathnew went into an early lead in the first minute and added a second on the stroke of half time, the lads had a lot of possession without creating any clear cut chances.
The under 13 girls turned in a great performance away to Shamrock Rovers going down by the odd goal in five in a 3-2 defeat, Grainne Phelan scored one and the other came in the form of an own goal. With a bit of luck the girls could have got a draw from this game. The under 18 girls showed a big improvement in their performance away to Ratoath Harps, a couple of weeks back they lost 8-0 to the same opposition but this time Ratoath were made to work very hard for their 2-0 win, keep up the good work girls.
In the junior section on Saturday the under 8B’s played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at home to Ashford Rovs B. The 9A’s lost 3-1 away to Ashford Rovs with Jack Noble scoring their goal. The under 14B’s recorded a 6-2 home win over Greystones Utd, Jack Gibney hit the back of the net four times with Chris Hudson weighing in with a brace.
On Sunday the 8A’s played a highly entertaining 4-4 draw with Arklow Town, Brian McCaul helped himself to two with Liam Bourke and Joshua Butler scoring the others. The 9B’s excellent run continues, this time they won 7-0 away to Aughrim Rgrs, a hat-trick from Sam Culleton and a brace a piece from Paddy Saville and Matthew Porter accounted for their goals. Our 10A’s played out an exciting local derby with Rathnew drawing 2-2, Mark Hodgkinson and Conor Hunter were on the score sheet. The 11B’s went down 2-0 in another local derby with neighbours Rathnew. The 12A’s lost 4-2 away to Roundwood, Peter Marah scored his sixth of the season with Dylan Doyle claiming his fourth of the campaign. Our 13A’s maintained their one hundred percent record in the premier shield with a 4-0 win over Ashford Rovs, Conor Byrne hit a magnificent hat-trick with the other been an og. The 14A’s drew 0-0 away to Greystones Utd, a result that keeps them in the mix for a place in the final. The 15’s drew 3-3 with Greystones Utd, Mitchell Kelly, JJ Power and an own goal accounted for their total. The under 16’s kept on the shirt tails of league leaders Coolboy with a 4-3 win away to Aughrim Rgrs, a brace from leading scorer Andrew Earls and one each from Josh Browne and Ben Fleming earned them three valuable points.
The clubs Christmas raffle tickets are now on sale, it is one of the few fundraisers that the club run through out the season so we would please ask all club members to make an effort when it comes to selling the tickets. The first team suffered their first defeat in seven league games on Friday night, they travelled to take on league leaders Garda FC and after a titantic battle they lost out 2-0.
