Once again Paul sorry about that but I believe your dad was made up and rumour has it he is going over to Anfield for trials, even if it was himself who started the rumour.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th JANUARY 2014

The first team lost 3-2 away to fourth placed Swords Celtic on Sunday, they fell behind on nineteen minutes but Luke Byrne drew them level five minutes before the break. Disaster struck on the stroke of half time as the home side retook the lead. In the eighty fifth minute Simon Alexander kept Rovers in the game when he saved a penalty but a minute later Swords sealed the points when they went 3-1 up. With a minute left Luke Byrne scored his second of the game but with little time remaining they hadn’t enough time for an equaliser.
The second team’s game was called off. The under 17’s and our girls teams also had no games.
In the junior section on Saturday the under 8A’s lost out narrowly to St Anthonys by a 1-0 score line. The 10A’s defeated Wolfe Tone 4-2, Joseph Neilan claimed his second hat-trick of the season to bring his total for the campaign to fifteen, Glen Broughan nabbed Rovers fourth goal. This result assures them at the worst runners up spot in the league, they are two points clear of Greystones A who take on their ‘B’ team next week to decide the destiny of the league title. Our under 12A’s started their league campaign with a comfortable 7-0 home win over Wolfe Tone B, a brace each from Paul Marah and Nathan Sullivan and singles from Dylan Doyle, Frankie Reynolds and Logan O’Toole accounted for their seven goal haul. The 14A’s suffered their first defeat of the season in local competition when they went down 4-3 in a seven goal thriller away to Arklow Town, Stuart Cox helped himself to a couple of goals with Ronan Murray scoring the other. The under 10C and 14B games were called off.
On Sunday our very young under 8B side lost 6-0 to a strong Coolboy Rgrs side, this little team having been doing well of late and the majority of this team will be under 8 for another two years. After going through the calender year of 2013 without defeat the 11A’s started 2014 in the same vein, they recorded a comprehensive 10-0 win over Enniskerry A. Sam Bishop led the way with a fantastic four goals, Max Kearney and Fionn Luddy both hit the net twice with singles from Conor Lewins and Harry Hodgkinson completing the scoring. Our 11B’s earned a tough three points in a narrow 1-0 win over Enniskerry B, under 10A player Joseph Neilan poached their all important goal. The 11C’s got their shield campaign off to a flyer with an 8-0 win away to Greystones Utd D,  the prolific twin strike force of Conor Leonard and Noah Sheridan both bagged hat-tricks with Ben Free and Luke Long registering singles. The 12B’s earned a good point away to Aughrim Rgrs in a 1-1 draw, leading scorer Jack Meaney hit their goal to earn them a share of the spoils. Our 13A’s had a comfortable 10-0 victory over Arklow Utd at the Whitegates, Conor Byrne scored an incredible five goals to take his total for the season to twenty, Sean Leonard followed closely nabbing a hat-trick while Tristan O’Toole and Cillian Kelly scored one a piece. The 13B’s  were very unlucky against St Anthonys, having previously lost heavily to the same opposition they found themselves 2-0 down early on but then battled back with Ryan Murphy scoring twice to level the game. Fatigue seem to affect them as they conceded three goals in the last five minutes to lose out 5-2 but they have to be given credit as they never gave up against a much physically bigger side. The under 15’s lost out 5-3 to St Anthonys in an eight goal thriller, a brace from Mitchell Kelly and one from Michael Anthony Doyle were their goalscorers on the day. The under 16’s suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat away to St Anthonys.
Everyone at the club would like to wish Ciaran Coffey of the under 14A team a speedy recovery from a broken wrist he suffered recently, we hope to see you back on the playing field very soon, get well soon Ciaran.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to express their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Ann Vickers and John Byrne who sadly passed away recently, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may they rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th JANUARY 2014

The first team ended their recent barren spell without a league win on Sunday and there was no better way to do it than defeat the league leaders. Garda FC who are top of the pile came to town but it was Rovers who came out on top. After falling a goal behind they showed great character and team spirit to fight back. First Luke Byrne levelled things up with a well taken goal and then with timing running out and a certain draw looking on the cards, Maurice Dunne popped up with an injury time winner to give the lads three valuable points.
The under 17’s recorded an excellent 4-2 away win over Greystones Utd, after controlling the majority of the first half and creating lots of chances they somehow found themselves one down at the break. The lads came out in the second period and pressed their hosts back, they got their rewards with two quick fire goals, one from Liam Kavanagh and the other from Ross Quinn. Greystones equalised but Rovers weren’t to be denied as further goals from Ross Quinn and Alan Power earned them a well deserved win in what was an excellent all round team performance.
In junior action the 9A’s defeated Arklow Town 5-1 away, Cole Byrne netted twice with Charlie Phelan, Jack Noble and an own goal accounting for the others. The 10B’s recorded a 3-2 home win over Glencormac Utd with scoring sensation Willoughby Woods hitting a fantastic hat-trick. Our 10C’s battled hard in their game with Greystones Utd but the away side were far too strong winning out 6-0. The 11A’s continued their good unbeaten run with a narrow 1-0 victory over St Anthonys, Sam Brown scored the all important goal. The 11B’s played an exciting 1-1 draw with Greystones Utd with Adam O’Reilly hitting the back of the net. Our 11C’s won 5-1 against Wicklow Town, a brace each from Ben Free and Conor Leonard and one from Noah Sheridan earned them the victory. The 13B’s lost 6-0 away to a very strong Little Bray Utd side while the under 15’s shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw away to Coolboy Rgrs. Michael Anthony Doyle and Matthew Traynor scored their goals for a hard earned point. The under 16’s defeated local neighbours Wicklow Town at the Whitegates by a score of 5-1 with Andrew Earls amazingly plundering all five goals.
The executive committee would like to thank and congratulate all the coaches who participated in the first aid course which took place all day last Saturday. The following coaches who successfully completed the first aid course were Brendan Porter, John Frazer, James Nolan, Jack Frazer, Mick Kearney, Jerry Lewins, Maria Lewins, John Gerard McGettigan, John Rice, Matt Byrne, Mark Lincoln, Ian Donoghue, Peter Marah, Declan Earls, Joe Neilan, Colin O’Brien, Peter Dunne, Ger Gibney and Stephen Meaney, once again well done to all. A big thanks to Willie O’Brien who set up the first aid course.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC were saddened to hear of the sad passing of Kathleen Dunne at the weekend. The Dunne family have been associated with the club since it was formed and they form a major part of the club’s history. Kathleen’s son Johnny is a major figure head within the club and her daughter Maureen was always on hand to help the club with selling tickets while her grandchildren play on various teams. Her son Gail played all his soccer with the club. Everyone at the club would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the Dunne family, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may she rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES 26th JANUARY 2014

The weather was the big winner at the weekend with mother nature putting paid to a lot of games, some teams were lucky or unlucky to get football depending on what way you viewed it. Standing out in the bad weather on Saturday/Sunday as a manager or coach can’t be the most attractive way to spend an afternoon but in fairness to all our managers, coaches, players and supporters they turn out hail, rain or snow.
Of the games that did get the go ahead, the second team were involved in a local derby on Saturday afternoon, they entertained Greystones Utd and after a five goal thriller the lads were on the wrong end of a 3-2 score line. The Rovers goals were a blast from the past with Mark Boyce hitting the back of the net twice. It is nice to see one of our stars from the past making a return to the playing field and what an impressive return, keep up the good work Boycey.
The under 17’s were away to Enniskerry YC in the quarter final of the cup, after having a poor first period the lads found themselves 2-0 down at the break but what a turn around in the second half. The lads came out all guns blazing and a minute into the second period they cut the deficit in half with a well taken goal from Glen McCarthy. The home team had a couple of chances to increase their lead but Rovers held out and drew level with a excellent finish from Ross Quinn. Liam Kavanagh completed the turn around when he bundled the ball home from six yards. Ross Quinn put the icing on the cake when he rifled a free kick to the roof of the net to give the lads their 4-2 win and a place in the semi final away to Greystones Utd.
On Saturday in the junior section the 8A’s lost 3-1 away to Arklow Town with Liam Bourke nabbing their goal, the 10B’s lost 5-1 away to a very strong Carnew side, Sean O’Meara scored his first shield goal to make it ten in all competitions for the season. Our under 15’s won 2-1 away to Arklow Town in their first outing in the premier league, leading scorer Mitchell Kelly hit a brace to bring his total to seventeen for the campaign and keep his impressive form in front of goal going. Considering the lads played part of the game with ten men as they had made all their substitutions when JJ Power received a head injury, the result was all the more impressive. Everyone at the club would like to wish JJ a speedy recovery from his injury and we all look forward to seeing him back on the playing field very soon.
The only game to get the green light on Sunday was the under 8B’s game away to Arklow Utd, after a close first period the home side with the aid of a strong wind ran out 4-1 winners in the end with Ben Lyons netting the goal for Rovers. All other games featuring our teams were cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions.
Our Saturday morning soccer academy continues every Saturday morning. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. Its for boys and girls from the age of 3 years upwards who are interested in learning the sport of soccer while also having fun. So for anyone that’s interested come along to the Whitegates on Saturday morning, there is no registration and you come along to whatever Saturdays you can make.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd FEBRUARY 2014

Well for the second successive week the weather caused chaos for the fixtures with waterlogged pitches the story of the day. The only game to get the go ahead on Saturday was the second team’s game away to promotion chasing Newbridge Town in the Major division 1B. When the teams last met way back in August the Kildare side emerged victorious with a 2-1 victory in the Whitegates. Before Saturday, four defeats in a row had saw the lads drop to the bottom of the league so a tough encounter was on the cards. The lads carved out an excellent 2-0 win, with a few new faces on board its hoped the team can now start to climb the table. Two goals from top scorer Ciaran McGettigan earned them all three points and hopefully this will see the lads kick on from here.
The first team were in cup action on Sunday when they entertained Rathcoole Boys in the second round of the Metropolitan cup at the Whitegates. They got off to the perfect start when some what against the run of play Jim Foley was quickest to the breaking ball after twelve minutes to float the ball over the stranded keeper from thirty yards out to put them one up. Three minutes later the referee awarded a penalty to the away side to the dismay of most people in the ground, they tucked the resulting spot kick away to level matters. Rovers had Simon Alexander to thank for keeping them in touch with three fantastic saves. Just after the half hour mark the lads went back in front when Mark O’Sullivan slotted past the advancing keeper. A minute after the break Rovers were caught napping as the away side drew level. The second half was a scrappy affair and just when we looked like we were heading for extra time loose marking in the home penalty area allowed Rathcoole to nip in and score what proved to be the decisive goal with three minutes left on the clock. In truth Rovers didn’t test the away keeper enough through out the game while our own keeper Simon Alexander was Rovers man of the match pulling off three superb saves during the game.
Elsewhere on Sunday the under 8A’s had an excellent 7-2 win away to Arklow Town, two goals each from Josh Butler and Tom Donoghue and singles from Jack Macklin, Brian McCaul and Daniel Kavanagh accounted for their total. The 10C’s lost 5-1 away to a strong Arklow Town side, Liam Nicholson scored his third goal of the season.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th FEBRUARY 2014

Well its becoming common place now to start our club notes with the same news, yes the dreaded bad weather struck again for the third week running. All games involving our teams due to be played on Saturday were completely wiped out and that included the second team’s cup game at home to Beggsboro AFC. The first team’s game away to Portmarnock FC set for Sunday was also a victim of the weather with this game been cancelled on Saturday.
Sunday fared out a lot better with most of our games going ahead, the under 8B’s lost 3-0 to a bigger Glencormac side but in fairness to the youngsters they were enjoying themselves and that’s what its all about. The 9A’s won 5-1 against Ashford Rovers, Peter Dunne and Steven Gormley both helped themselves to a brace a piece with Jack Noble getting the fifth. Our under 10C team went down to Fassaroe YC on a 5-1 score line, the result didn’t do justice to a team who battled well against a more physically bigger team, Jack Ryan netted their goal, for a full match report and photos check out the club website. The 11B’s lost narrowly to Arklow Utd in the division one cup, it took extra time to separate the two team with Arklow running out 2-1 winners in a close encounter, Charlie Leonard hit the Rovers goal. If it’s exciting attacking football your looking for, with plenty of goals, then it was the Coolboy Sports Field where you should have been on Sunday. Our 11C’s travelled to take on the home side and what a game it was. The lads ran out 9-6 winners, yes 9-6, a goal feast. Noah Sheridan led the way with a four goal haul, Ben Free added two and there were singles from Conor Leonard, Luke Long and first of the season for Michael Cassidy to make it three wins from three in the shield. The 12B’s recorded a good 3-1 win away to Greystones Utd, Nedis Velindis, Daniel Murphy and Thomas O’Neill all hit the back of the net. The 13A’s started their league campaign with a comfortable 7-1 win over Enniskerry, Daniel Fitzsimons was on fire in front of goal slamming home a fantastic four goals, leading scorer Conor Byrne hit two with defender Ryan Corrigan popping up with one. The under 14A’s guaranteed themselves a place in the premier shield final with an easy 12-0 win over St Anthonys, Ben Watson became the third player in the club to hit the back of the net four times on Sunday with four cracking goals, leading scorer Luca Rampersaud  brought his total for the season to fifteen with a brace, Jack Dunne now has ten for the season after he notched two. Daniel Harbourne scored twice for his first goals of the season with Dean Noble and Stuart Cox completing the scoring with one each to secure them their place in the final. Our under 16’s defeated Greystones Utd 7-1 in the Rocky Road, the fourth hat-trick of the day came from Colin O’Toole [his fourth hat-trick of the season], Oisin Breen, Andrew Earls, Mark Darragh and Kevin O’Halloran all hit singles.
Wicklow Rovers AFC promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and seniors in the community, our club is growing all the time and any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th FEBRUARY 2014

The first teams fixture away to Glenmore Dundrum was cancelled due to the heavy rain but the second teams game at home to Killester Utd beat the weather, as it got the go ahead on Saturday afternoon. Rovers welcomed league leaders Killester to the Whitegates and ever if there was a game were you would say ‘’if you don’t take your chances you pay the price’’. Rovers made all the early running in this game and had three or four clear cut chances but unfortunately they failed to take any of them. If you were a neutral and hadn’t seen either team before you would think it was Rovers who were league leaders as they took the game to their opponents. The second half was a more even affair but when it came to taking their chances Killester were more clinical in front of goal with two well taken goals to run out 2-0 winners. Craig Jameson and Jonathon Dunne were impressive for Rovers on the day.
In the junior section on Saturday the under 12A’s made it two wins from two in the league when they defeated Greystones Utd B 7-0, Paul Marah led the way with an excellent hat-trick to bring his tally for the season to eleven, Scott Sheridan notched a brace with Frankie Reynolds and Dylan Doyle both scoring one a piece.
Sunday action saw the under 8B team go down 4-0 to a strong Ashford Rovers team in the Hockey Pitch. At the same venue the under 10B’s lost out narrowly to Aughrim Rgrs in the quarter final of the cup in what was a very tight affair. The 11C’s were defeated 4-1 in the quarter final of the cup away to Arklow Utd, Ben Free scored his sixth of the season to nab the Rovers goal.
Pride of place within the club this week must go to the under 13 girls team, they entertained Mount Merrion in the semi final of the Metropolitan Girls Subsidiary Cup on Sunday and ran out 6-2 winners to progress to the final. Having previously lost at home to the same opposition in the league this was always going to be a tough encounter. It has to be said if it was entertainment and high quality football your looking for this was the place to be last Sunday. The away side got off to a dream start when they went one up in the first minute but Rovers hit back straight away when a brilliant individual goal from Grainne Phelan immediately from the restart drew them level. Rovers were on top for the majority of the first period and they made their dominance count. On seven minutes Clodagh Irwin put them 2-1 in front after good work from Grainne Phelan. Midway through the half Lauren Gregory made it 3-1. A minute before the break the impressive Grainne Phelan got on the end of a long ball to blast past the keeper to send the girls in at the break 4-1 up and the lead was fully deserved on their first half performance. The second half was a more even affair but at crucial times in the half it was Rovers who were the most clinical in front of goal. Sinead McGettigan who worked tirelessly in the centre of the park increased the lead when she powerfully fired home from the left four minutes into the second period. Sinead made it 6-1 after forty two minutes when she cut in from the right to fire to the back of the net. Mount Merrion scored a consolation goal with five minutes remaining. The final result ended up 6-2 to Rovers and earns them a place in the final against the winners of Balbriggan FC or Grange Woodbine. Grainne Phelan was a dominant force in this game and caused havoc that the opposition had no answer for. Sinead McGettigan worked tirelessly in the middle but it has to be said this was an excellent all round team performance by the girls. It was an outstanding game of football which provided loads of thrills for the watching crowd and was played in an excellent spirit by both sides.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of John Healy [Newcastle] who sadly passed away recently, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 23rd FEBRUARY 2014

The second team played out a scoreless draw at the Whitegates on Saturday afternoon when they held mid table Farm Utd to a draw. This was a tight encounter and the lads have been shown a steady improvement in form lately.
Our under 17’s defeated Coolboy Rangers 6-0 at the Whitegates on Saturday morning, they led 1-0 at the break with a goal from Alan Power. The second half saw them step up their performance and a brace a piece from team captain Liam Kavanagh and Conor O’Brien and a single from leading scorer Glen McCarthy saw them run out comfortable winners.
In the junior section on Saturday the 8A’s defeated Ashford Rovers. Josh Butler plundered six goals with Jack Macklin hitting two. Tom Donoghue, Michael Brennan and Brian McCaul all scored singles. The 9A’s played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Aughrim Rgrs. Aaron Murray netted twice with Cole Byrne nabbing the other. Our 9B’s continued their recent good form as they made it six games without defeat with victory over Aughrim Rgrs B, a four goal haul from Sam Culleton set them on their way. A brace from Matthew Porter and one from Charlie Doherty completed their tally. The 10C’s were going well away to Greystones Utd but after playing well they conceded late goals to eventually lose out 4-0. The 12B’s remain unbeaten after three games in the league when they drew 2-2 with Ashford Rovs, goals from Conor Lewins and Nedis Velindis earned them an excellent point. The under 13A’s guaranteed their place in the shield final with an easy 14-0 win away to Arklow Utd to make it eleven wins from eleven games in the shield. Conor Byrne brought his tally for the season to twenty seven with an incredible five goals, close on Conor’s heels was Daniel Fitzsimons who notched four goals to make it twenty for the campaign. Sean Leonard banged home two while Cian O’Brien, Ryan Corrigan and Jack Colaluca all scored one each to complete the fourteen goal haul. The 14B’s got a taste of what premier football is all about, in their first game in the premier league they were beaten 9-0 by a very strong Arklow Town A side. Kept the heads up lads as when you get used to this level we have no doubt there will be better days ahead.
The only game to beat the weather on Sunday was the under 11A’s, they travelled to take on Greystones Utd A in the premier shield and after going through the calender year of 2013 unbeaten, they continued 2014 in the same vein, they played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Sam Brown and Sam Bishop notching the all important goals.
Once again we would ask all managers to text in their result and goalscorers to the relevant club fixtures secretary asap after your game has finished, everyone should realise that all match information has to be emailed to the league, the paper and posted on the club facebook and website so please get the details to us as soon as possible.

The first team took on Mount Merrion in the Moore Cup on Friday night, unfortunately they went narrowly on a 2-1 score line. They fell two behind but then got on top of their hosts to control the majority of the game. Stephen Earls pulled a goal back and the lads had other chances to draw level but failed to take them. With the rub of the green they could have won this match against their higher ranked opponents.
The second team travelled to take on Beggsboro on Saturday evening in the Tom Carroll cup but their cup ambitions were dashed as the home side ran out 2-0 winners.
In the junior section on Saturday the under 10A’s had an excellent 3-1 away win over Greystones Utd A in the quarter final of the premier cup. Conor Hunter notched a brace with Mark Hodgkinson adding the other to book their semi final place. The under 13A’s maintained their good run with a 6-0 home victory over Ashford Rovers, leading narrowly at the break by a score of 1-0 the lads stepped up the pace in the second period to run out comfortable winners. Two goals from Daniel Fitzsimons and one each from Ryan Corrigan, Jack Colaluca, Shane Cullinan and leading scorer Conor Byrne accounted for their tally.
On Sunday the under 8B’s were involved in a close exciting tussle with Aughrim Rangers in the Hockey pitch, after going 2-0 down they grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and dominated for large periods. Steven Kavanagh pulled one back and even though they created several more chances they just couldn’t find an equaliser losing out 2-1. Our 11A’s continued their amazing unbeaten run which dates back to the 13th of January last year, they defeated Enniskerry 6-2 away in the premier shield, two goals from Harry Hodgkinson and singles from Max Kearney, Fionn Luddy, Mark O’Brien and Sam Bishop ensured their unbeaten run was maintained. The under 12A’s made it three wins from three games in the league when they won 3-0 away to St Anthonys, Nathan Sullivan scored two with Jamie Noble notching the other, in three league games their defence has yet to be breached. The 10C’s lost out narrowly to Ashford Rovers on a 1-0 score line. Goalkeeper Fionn O’Higgins was the star man in what was a good all round team performance. Our under 13B’s lost 4-2 to Wolfe Tone B, Fionn O’Reilly hit his third goal of the season while Fionn Matthews got his name on the score sheet for the first time this season. In the under 15 premier league the ‘A’ team took on the ‘B’ team with the A’s coming out on top winning 5-1, Jack Dunne hit a splendid hat-trick with Stuart Cox and Ronan Murray adding one a piece. Jack Gibney scored for the B’s who battled all the way after leaking three goals in the first six minutes.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 13th APRIL 2014

The first team were the only senior side in action at the weekend and they went down 2-1 away to Lucan. Mark Delaney put them in front on the half hour mark but the home team were level just before the break. The lads had the chances to win the game but didn’t take them when they came their way and they were made to pay when Lucan claimed all three points when they scored against the run of play.
There was only one midweek fixture and that was the 13A’s shield game away to Avonmore, having already qualified for the final the lads were involved in a nine goal thriller, coming out on top by five goals to four. Shane Lincoln, Conor Byrne, Dylan Frazer, Daniel Fitzsimons and a first of the season from Tom Farrell secured all three points in a highly entertaining match.
Action on the playing field last Saturday was confined to the junior section of the club, the under 8A’s were involved in a high scoring encounter with Newtown Juniors, two goals from Lee Brown and one each from Jack Macklin, Tom Donoghue, Charlie Czwalina, Brian McCaul and Liam Burke saw them win 7-4 in a game that provided exciting football from both teams. The 10C’s lost 4-0 to a very strong Greystones side in the semi final of the cup with Tom Farrelly standing out for Rovers. The 12B’s lost 5-2 away to Arklow Town in the semi final of the division 2 cup, Jack Meaney and Charlie Christie scored their goals.  Our 13A’s dropped their first points in the league, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Arklow Town. Conor Byrne’s thirty second goal of the season earned his side a point which keeps them top of the pile. The 14A’s are safely through to the premier cup final when they defeated Arklow Town A 1-0, Stuart Cox provided the all important goal to make it sixteen for the campaign and keep his sides dream of a treble alive.
On Sunday the 8B’s lost 4-1 away to Aughrim Rgrs with Eoin Kennedy nabbing their goal. Our 9A’s won 3-1 against St Anthonys with Charlie Phelan, Aaron Murray and Steven Gormley all getting on the score sheet. The 9B’s had a narrow 1-0 win over neighbours Wicklow Town with leading scorer Sam Culleton getting the only goal. Well done to our under 10A’s who defeated Ashford Rovers in the semi final of the premier cup, a goal a piece from Chris Bouchier and Calum Gibney earned them a 2-1 win and a place in the final. Our 11A’s pursuit of the treble continues as they beat Greystones Utd A in the semi final of the premier cup, two goals from Sam Bishop and one each from Sam Brown and Conor Lewins with the last coming in the form of an own goal saw the lads win 5-2 after extra time in their quest to add the cup to the league title. The 11B’s won 2-0 against local rivals Wicklow Town with Adam O’Reilly and Finn Egan Barron hitting the net. Our 11C’s won 5-2 away to Greystones Utd C, Conor Leonard bagged an excellent hat-trick with Ben Free helping himself to a brace. Our 13B’s lost 3-1 to Arklow Utd, Ryan Murphy scored their goal and with better finishing the lads could have got something from the game. The under 16’s lost 2-1 to Coolboy in the semi final of the premier cup, after taking the lead with a well taken goal from Ben Fleming they had chances to extend their lead but the away side levelled against the run of play. Coolboy went in front with a hotly disputed penalty, which proved to be the winner. The lads can count themselves unlucky in this game as on the day they were the better team but just didn’t have the luck in front of goal.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 20th APRIL 2014

The first team were involved in two games this week, on Wednesday night they collected three valuable points in their bid to pull away from the relegation zone in the league. Two goals a piece from Luke Byrne and Gareth Murphy secured them a vital 4-2 away victory over Glenmore/Dundrum which saw them move into a mid table position and five points clear of the drop zone. On Sunday they entertained Kilnamanagh at the Whitegates, they went into the game under strength with a few players out. After a tight first half with Rovers having the better chances the sides went in at the break scoreless. Rovers probed away in the second period and carved out a couple of clear cut chances but failed to take them. With thirteen minutes left Sean Duffy scored a screamer from just outside the area for his sixth of the season to give the lads the lead, but it wasn’t to last long as the away side were level within a minute. With nine minutes remaining Rovers were reduced to ten men and in fairness to the lads they battled to the end to gain a valuable point. Four points from two games helps them climb into a mid table position and away from the danger area.
In the junior section, midweek action saw the under 10A’s record a narrow 1-0 win over St Anthonys, Calum Gibney’s fifth goal of the season kept his side on course for a place in the premier shield final. The 11A’s also had a narrow 1-0 win, they defeated Ashford Rovs in the Hockey Pitch. Having already captured the premier league title and booked their place in the premier cup final a single goal from Max Kearney, his sixteenth of the season was enough to gain all three points in the shield and keep their quest for a treble alive. Our 11C’s went down 3-1 away to Arklow Town B, leading scorer Conor Leonard scored the Rovers goal to bring his total to twenty seven for the campaign. The 12A’s continued their assault on the division one title with their third win on the trot with an excellent 4-2 away victory over Newtown Juniors, Ben Hudson nabbed a brace to bring his total to three for the season, leading scorer Paul Marah brought his total to nineteen with a single while Dylan Doyle registered his ninth for the season. The 13A’s won a tight encounter with Newtown Juniors winning 1-0 in a keenly contested affair. Daniel Fitzsimons notched his twenty fifth goal of the season to earn all three points for his team to maintain their place at the top of the league. The other two games during the week were cup semi finals which unfortunately saw neither team have much luck, the 14B’s lost 3-1 to Arklow Town with Conor Hawes claiming his tenth of the campaign with the under 15’s going down 5-0 away to a very strong Arklow Town A side.
At the weekend the junior section had very little action with only the one game taking place. On Saturday the 13B’s lost out 5-2 away to Roundwood, Fionn Matthews and Daragh Gibney netted the Rovers goals in a game which saw the lads battle to the end.
The club recently participated in a bag pack to raise money for Habitat Ireland, the bag pack took place in Tesco and was well attended by our junior members of the club. Habitat Ireland is a Dublin based charity, which transforms lives by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. The charity offers a ‘hand up’ to families to pull themselves  out of poverty through access to simple decent housing. President Higgins is a patron of Habitat Ireland. We would like to thank all our junior members and their managers and coaches for helping raise money for this worthy cause.
Our Saturday morning soccer academy resumes this coming Saturday the 26th of April from 11 o’clock to 12 o’clock on the all weather pitch in the Whitegates under the guidance of club coach Johnny Dunne. All kids from the age of 3 years old upwards are welcome to attend.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their congratulations to local referee Paul O’Brien on becoming the new president of the Irish Soccer Referees Society, it’s an honour well deserved for all your hard work and commitment to your profession. We would like to wish you the best of luck in your term of office and once again congratulations Paul.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 27th APRIL 2014

The first team held title chasing Swords Celtic to a 2-2 draw but in truth this was a game they let slip away, leading 2-0 at half time through goals from Ian Brannigan and Gareth Murphy and in total control they let the visitors back into the match. It was a promising performance from the lads but this was their ninth draw of the campaign. If they had turned four or five of those draws into wins they would have been challenging for the title. Hopefully they can build on it for next season.
The second team played their last game of the season away to title chasing Postal Utd losing unluckily 3-2 to a disputed penalty five minutes from the end. Daryl Sullivan levelled matters at 1-1 and then leading scorer Ciaran McGettigan equalised for a second time at 2-2 only to lose out to the harsh penalty with five minutes left. Tommy Sullivan was excellent between the posts for Rovers pulling off some excellent saves. The team had a great second half of the season after going through a transition period before Christmas. The executive committee would like to thank manager Pat Ffrench, assistant Anto Scanlon, the players and all involved with the team for all the hard work during the season.
The under 13 girls were involved in a six goal thriller with Peamount Utd drawing 3-3 away from home, Sinead McGettigan, Grainne Phelan and Niamh Caffrey nabbed their goals. The 18 girls won 3-2 against Dundrum with Rioghna McGettigan getting two and Saoirse O’Reilly notching one.
In the junior section during the week our 11A's continued their good form with an excellent 4-1 away win over St Anthonys, two goals from Sam Bishop set them on the way with two own goals completing the tally. The 12A's kept their title hopes on track with a solid 2-0 win away to Arklow Town, Paul Marah and a first of the season for Brandon O'Brien secured them three valuable points against one of their title rivals. The 12B's also have their sights on the division two title and they kept themselves in the hunt with a 3-0 home victory over Arklow Town. Goals from Jack Meaney, Daniel Murphy and Tom O'Neil earned them the win to close the gap on leaders Aughrim. The 15's lost 3-1 at home to Arklow Town, Michael Anthony Doyle scored the Rovers goal.
On Saturday the 8B’s won 7-3 away to Wicklow Town, Ben Lyons hit a superb hat-trick while Steven Kavanagh nabbed a brace. Elliot Gaynor scored his first of the season with Eoin Kennedy getting the other. The 14A’s treble dream is still alive when they recorded a good 4-2 home win over Wolfe Tone, two goals from Luca Rampersaud and one each from Ciaran Coffey and Stuart Cox helped them to three important points. The under 16’s were unlucky going down 2-1 to Coolboy in their refixed cup semi final, Kevin O’Halloran scored their goal and they did have chances throughout to win but didn’t have the luck.
On Sunday the 10B’s lost 4-1 to Aughrim with top scorer Willoughby Woods scoring the goal. The 11C’s were disappointed as they were present to play Rathnew but the visitors failed to show. Our 12A’s secured their place at the top of the league with a 4-1 away win over Avonmore, a brace from Paul Marah and singles from Frankie Reynolds and Nathan Sullivan secured all three points. The 12B’s title hopes suffered a set back when they lost 4-1 away to Enniskerry, Jack Meaney scored their goal. The 13A’s continued their good form with a 4-2 win over Greystones Utd, two goals from Daniel Fitzsimons and one a piece from Conor Byrne and Tristan O’Toole keeps them top of the pile. The 14B’s suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Avonmore, Chris Hudson scored a consolation goal for them. The 15’s lost 5-2 to St Anthonys, Mitchell Kelly and Alfie Heather scored the goals.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers would like to wish our club president Anthony Earls a speedy recovery from a recent operation, we all hope to see you up and about very soon. Your missed around the place, get well soon Anthony.
The executive committee of Wicklow Rovers would like to thank all the kids and parents who supported the clubs easter camp. It was a great turn out with 65 kids participating in the camp. Everyone had a great time with plenty of fun and games. With the weather been fantastic and some potential Ronaldo's and Messi's on show the whole week was a joy to run. Thanks to all our coaches who helped with the running of the camp. Well done and thanks to everyone involved. Photos from the camp are posted on the club website and Facebook page.

The 13B's played two midweek matches, on Tuesday they lost 4-2 away to Arklow Utd with Ciaran Byrne and Fionn Matthews nabbing their goals. On Thursday they entertained Aughrim Rgrs who were physically a lot bigger than the Rovers lads but after a tough battle and a great spirited performance from the lads they unluckily lost narrowly on a 2-1 scoreline with Jaafar Ali getting their goal. Our 14A's defeated Arklow Town A 2-1 down in Arklow, Stuart Cox's twenty first and Ronan Murray's thirteenth of the season was enough to ensure all three points in a highly competitive league where several teams are still in with a chance of winning the title. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st JUNE 2014

Well with the season now approaching its last couple of weeks there was a limited amount of games last week. On Wednesday the 10A's went into their away game with Greystones Utd requiring a point to make the shield final but it wasn't to be. After a tough encounter the lads lost narrowly by a score of 2-1. On the night Calum Gibney hit the Rovers goal in a game that could have gone either way. The team had a superb season winning the premier cup, finishing runners up the premier league while just missing out on a place in the shield final in their last game. Well done to Colin, Joe, Jenny and the team on a great season. Thursday saw the 11A's try to complete the treble when they took on Greystones Utd in the final of the premier shield, having already captured the premier league and cup they had their sights firmly set on the shield. At the break they found themselves 2-0 down in a half where they never reached the high standards they had set themselves throughout the season. When they went 3-0 down early in the second period the cause looked hopeless but the game changed dramatically. Rovers started to dictate play and they pulled a goal back from the boot of Max Kearney with twenty minutes left. Max nabbed his and the teams second to set up a grand stand finish with ten minutes remaining. The lads piled the pressure on in search of an equaliser but Greystones held firm to claim the shield. The game was a very exciting affair with some excellent football played in what was a very sporting game between two evenly matched sides. Hard luck to Rovers and a big congratulations to Greystones Utd on their success.
On Saturday the under 12B’s had a great win over St Patricks winning 4-0, top scorer Jack Meaney plundered a brace with Charlie Christie and Tom O’Neill hitting one a piece. The 14A’s kept on course for the treble when they defeated Wolfe Tone by the narrowest of margins winning 1-0 in Bray. Stuart Cox hit his ninth league goal and his twenty third in all competitions to ensure his sides quest to add the league title to the cup and shield already won remains on track. The only game on Sunday saw the 13B’s lose 5-0 to Roundwood, in truth the lads had their chances to make this a closer contest but they failed to convert the chances when they came their way.

The club will be running their annual summer soccer/fun camp for two weeks in July. Week one will be from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July, the second week is from Monday 14th July to Friday 18th July. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 8th JUNE 2014

With the season coming to a close in the next week it’s unbelievable that we have still got teams playing. Our under 11B and C teams were battling for a place in the division one shield final but both sides suffered setbacks in midweek games, the 11B's lost 3-2 away to Arklow Utd, Adam O'Reilly and Charlie Leonard plundered the goals but they just couldn't get a leveller. Our under 11C team saw their shield hopes suffer a setback when they lost 4-1 to neighbours Wicklow Town, David Lally hit the Rovers goal against a good Town side. The under 13A's completed a premier league and shield double during the week when they captured the league title, firstly they drew 4-4 away to Ashford Rovers in a thriller. Leading 3-0 at the break credit has to go to Ashford on a splendid fightback. Daniel Fitzsimons fired home an excellent hat-trick with Shane Lincoln getting his sixth of the season to earn Rovers a valuable point. Their second game was also away, this time Avonmore were the opposition and the lads made no mistake. A brace from Sean Leonard, a 34th goal of the season from Daniel Fitzsimons and singles from Tristan O'Toole and Jack Colaluca sparked off the celebrations. Congratulations to John, Matt and the lads on a great season. Our 14A's finished off their season in style winning the premier league to complete the treble. An excellent 4-2 away win over Avonmore coupled with a walkover from Enniskerry was enough to claim the title. In the Avonmore game the lads found themselves two down but then they produced a spirited fightback to score four goals without reply. Eli Graham smashed home two to make it seventeen for the season, Stuart Cox scored his twenty fourth of the campaign with under 13A player Jack Colaluca  firing in the other. It’s been a magnificent season for this young team taking the premier league, cup and shield back to the Whitegates. Congratulations to Boodhan, Eoghan, John and Dave and the team on a great achievement.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th AUGUST 2014

Well the action on the playing field started at the weekend, while the first team game was cancelled the second team kicked off their season with an excellent home win over Earl Celtic. Rovers were on top in the early stages and had the chances to go in front. They’re early dominance was rewarded when Maurice Dunne smashed home a penalty to the roof of the net to send them in at the break one up. The second period saw the lads step up another gear with Gareth Murphy slotting past the keeper to make it 2-0. Another penalty from Maurice Dunne and one from last season’s leading scorer Ciaran McGettigan gave the lads a well deserved 4-0 victory and the perfect start to the campaign for new manager Anthony Doran and his squad.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 24th AUGUST 2014

The first team kicked off their season on Monday night away to Shamrock Bhoys in the Carlisle Grounds. Unfortunately the lads got off to a bad start finding themselves 2-0 down after twenty minutes, to their credit they upped their performance in the second period pulling it back to 2-1 with a goal from Chris Burgess from the penalty spot but as they pressed forward in search of an equaliser they got caught with the sucker punch goal to eventually lose out 3-1. Sunday saw them fare better, they entertained Ballymun United in the Whitegates and it was the complete opposite to Monday’s game. This time it was the lads who raced into a two goal lead inside the first fifteen minutes with Chris Burgess hitting both goals and the lads been in total control of the game. The lads let the away side back into the game when they gave away a needless penalty before the break to send Rovers in 2-1 up at the interval. The second half saw Ballymun do most of the pressing in search of a leveller and with eight minutes left they got their reward. Just when it looked like the spoils were going to be shared Daryl Sullivan got on the end of a Luke Byrne knock back to score deep into injury time to give the lads all three points. On the day Arthur Delahunt pulled off an excellent save at a crucial stage but the man of the match went to Mark [Wally] Johnson who put in an excellent shift in the middle of the park breaking up a lot of the away sides play while also driving his own side forward.
The second team followed last week’s great result with a disappointing narrow 1-0 defeat away to Verona FC. In what was a closely fought encounter where the lads had their chances they will be disappointed they didn’t get something from this game. Rovers had the chances but failed to take them, Jim Foley was Rovers star player on the day involved in everything that was good from Rovers.
The club are currently looking to start up a girls team for girls born in 2004, 2005 and 2006, if you were born in any of these years and would like to be involved in a soccer team you should contact Carmel at 086-2490093.
The clubs August soccer camp proved to be a huge success with close on 50 kids taking part. Everyone at the camp had a great time with the weather been kind with the sun shining every day. The kids showed their coaches how its done in the famous end of week coaches versus kids matches, the coaches got off to a flyer winning the first game but the kids stormed back winning the next two games to claim the bragging rights. A big thanks to all the coaches and kids on making the week so successful.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 31st AUGUST 2014

The first team had a bad day at the office when they went down heavily away to Lucan United, at 2-0 down they were awarded a penalty which could have got them back into the game. Unfortunately the spot kick wasn’t successful and the lads ended up conceding another five goals to lose out 7-0. The only thing to do after this is roll up the sleeves, get back to the training ground and come out next week determined to get back on track with a good result.
The second team took on one of the title favourites on Saturday in the Whitegates, St James Gate rolled into town boasting two wins from two games justifying their favourites tag. The first half proved to be a tight affair with both sides limited to a couple of chances each. Tommy O’Sullivan in the Rovers goal pulled off two excellent saves in one on one situations while up the other end the away keeper saved well from Maurice Dunne on two occasions. The second half was more of the same but it was the away side who looked the more dangerous in attack. With eighteen minutes left St James Gate went in front and with eight minutes left they increased their lead, it looked like Rovers goose was cooked. Rovers pulled one back with six minutes left on the clock when Mark Delaney stole in at the back post to head home. In added on time Rovers got the leveller which they probably deserved, a free kick was awarded to Rovers out on the right for a bad challenge which was followed by an away player been dismissed for an off the ball incident. The resulting move was a product of last seasons under 17 team, Liam Kavanagh whipped in the free which was met by Alan Power to power home his first senior goal to give the lads a well earned point.
The clubs AGM will take place in the clubhouse in the Whitegates on Monday the 29th of September at 7.30 pm. All members are encouraged to attend this meeting. Please arrive on time as the meeting will start at 7.30 sharp.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th SEPTEMBER 2014

The first team welcomed Dublin Bus to the Whitegates on Sunday in the first round of the Metropolitan Cup, with the away side plying their trade two leagues higher than the lads they came to Wicklow quietly confident of turning over the home side. What they didn’t count on, was the fighting spirit of this young Rovers team. In what was an even enough first half it was Rovers who went in at the break 1-0 up with Gareth Murphy hitting a screamer from twenty five yards. Disaster struck five minutes into the second period when a defensive mistake allowed the away side in to level matters. Things got worse over the next few minutes, first the away side were awarded a penalty but Arthur Delahunt in the Rovers goal was the hero pulling off an excellent save. Five minutes later Rovers were reduced to ten men having a man sent off for a second bookable offence. This only seemed to spur the lads on as they knuckled down and battled away to bring the game to extra time. They were more than a match against the eleven men, defending well and causing problems when getting forward. The first period of extra time saw both sides cancel each other out. Rovers went in front five minutes into the second period of extra time, Luke Byrne and Gareth Murphy combined to cause all sorts of panic in the away rearguard before Murphy tucked away his second goal of the game. A minute later things got even better, Gareth Murphy slipped in Mark O’Sullivan who coolly slotted past the advancing keeper to put the lads into round two. It would be hard to pick out a man of the match for Rovers, first Arthur Delahunt was excellent between the posts pulling off four excellent saves topped off with his penalty save. At the centre of the Rovers defence David Rowan and Ricki Quinn were rock solid while also driving their team mates forward. Up front Gareth Murphy put in some shift, chasing every ball and not giving the defenders anytime to settle, add to that he netted twice and provided the assist for the third goal. This was a confidence boosting win for the lads and a well deserved victory.
The second team continued their good start to the season when they earned all three points from their trip to Celbridge. They returned from the County Kildare town with a narrow 1-0 victory in a game which they could have won more comfortably, they had plenty of chances to make this game a lot easier but the good thing was they claimed all three points to keep them ticking along. This win moves them up to third place in the table.
Our under 14 girls started their season in group A of the eFlow cup away to Shamrock Rovers, unfortunately they came up against a strong side losing out 5-1. Niamh Caffrey scored the Wicklow goal.
The various SFAI National cup draws for our schoolboys/girls teams were recently carried out, in the under 12 section, the 12A’s will have to travel to County Kildare when they take on Newbridge Town in the first round. The under 13A’s received a bye in the first round of their competition and then were handed a home tie in an all Wicklow clash when they take on Wolfe Tone in the second round. The under 14A’s head to Laois where they take on Portlaoise in what will be a tough first round encounter. Finally the under 15’s are also on the road when they were drawn away to Willow Park in the first round of their cup.
The clubs AGM will take place in the clubhouse in the Whitegates on Monday the 29th of September at 7.30 pm. All members are encouraged to attend this meeting. Please arrive on time as the meeting will start at 7.30 sharp.

WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 14th SEPTEMBER 2014

The second team continued their good start to the season when they defeated Greystones Utd 3-2 in a local derby. Rovers went in at the break with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jim Foley and Maurice Dunne and seemed to be in total control of the game but the away side had other ideas. Within five minutes of the restart Greystones were level, two minutes into the half a mistake allowed the away side pull one back and two minutes after that they were level with a well struck effort. The lads battled their way back into the lead and it was fitting that Rovers best player on the day popped up with the winner. Ciaran McGettigan flicked the ball past the last defender before racing clear to powerfully drive past the advancing keeper to score what proved to be the decisive goal. Rovers probably just about shaded. On the day Greg Dunne marshalled his defence well, but our best player was Ciaran McGettigan who proved a handful for the away defence, his pace, strength and willingness to chase down every ball caused havoc to Greystones and his goal was clinically finished to top of an all round excellent individual performance which see’s the team maintain their third spot in the table.
Saturday’s junior action saw our under 8A’s play out a thrilling 2-2 draw with St Anthonys with Joe Culleton and Conor Williams hitting the back of the net, the under 10B’s lost 6-1 to Newtown Juniors with Cormac Waldron netting for them. The 11A’s lost out narrowly on a 2-1 score line to Ashford Rovs, David Butler scored their goal. The 12C’s which is a mixture of under 11’s and 12’s lost 8-1 to Enniskerry with Conor Lacey popping in their goal. Our under 14B’s came up against a very strong Wolfe Tone team losing 10-1 with Nathan Sullivan plundering their only goal.
On Sunday the 8B’s drew 1-1 with neighbours Wicklow Town in an exciting local derby, Sean Patrick Geurin hit the Rovers goal. The 9A’s won 4-2 at home to St Anthonys, Liam Burke smashed home an excellent hat-trick with George O’Neill netting the other. The 9B’s played some neat football in their 4-0 home win over Greystones Utd, two goals each from Evan Conyard and Ben Lyons earned them victory in a good all round team performance. The 12A’s continued from where they left off last season, they travelled to Enniskerry and recorded a comprehensive 10-2 win, Max Kearney and Fionn Luddy both claimed fantastic hat-tricks, a brace from Mark O’Brien and singles from Sam Brown and Samuel Bishop accounted for their tally. The 13A’s started with a good win at home to Coolboy Rgrs, Paul Marah with two goals and singles from Scott Sheridan, Robbie Hoffman and Nathan Sullivan earned them a 5-3 win. Our 13B’s came up against a very strong Newtown Juniors side losing 14-1, they kept trying through out the game with Tom O’Shea getting their goal. Our 14A’s started their campaign with a resounding 9-0 home win over St Anthonys, a well taken hat-trick from Conor Byrne, two goals from Sean Farrell and one each from Tristan O’Toole, Daniel Fitzsimons, Ryan Corrigan and Shane Lincoln secured them the perfect start. The under 15’s got off to a flyer with a 5-1 away victory over Ashford Rovs, James Lang, Paul King, Eli Graham, Luca Rampersaud and Stephen Finlay all scored for last seasons treble winners.
Everyone at the club would like to wish executive committee member and former chairman Paul Delaney a speedy recovery from his recent operation, we all hope to see you up and about very soon, get well soon Paul.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 21st SEPT 2014

The first team made the trip to Edenderry on Friday night to take on the local side in the first round of FAI Umbro Intermediate cup, the lads went in front early in play with a Chris Burgess header finding the back of the net. This is the way it remained until twenty minutes from the end when the home side equalised with a controversial goal. The home side then went on to fire home a winner with eight minutes left on the clock. It has to be said that some of the decisions from the officials during the game left the Rovers management team and players baffled.
The second team continued their great start to the season when they defeated Mount Merrion away in the first round of the Leinster Junior cup. Maurice Dunne set them on their way, with last season’s county under 17 player of the year Liam Kavangh firing home the second. The home side pulled one back before Daryl Sullivan scored the third for the lads to secure a safe passage to round two.
Our under 17’s finally got their season off to a start after all the weeks of uncertainty of whether there was a league for them or not. After a lot of false starts they at last got a competitive game under their belts and it was a great start for them. They took on local neighbours Wicklow Town and recorded a good 5-2 win, Josh Browne, Colin O’Toole, Mark Darragh, Fionn Nother and Hugh Humby plundered the goals to earn them all three points.
In the junior section on Saturday, the under 8 white team won 2-1 away to Arklow Town, Sean Patrick Geurin scored for the second week running with Shane O’Reilly nabbing the other goal. The under 9 green team lost 6-1 to Arklow Town with leading scorer Liam Burke notching their goal. Our under 9 white team lost 4-1 away to a strong St Patricks team with Ben Lyons scoring his third of the season. The 10A’s had a good win away to Ashford Rovers winning 4-2, Sam Culleton hit a fantastic hat-trick with Cole Byrne hitting the fourth. The 11A’s lost 4-2 away to St Anthonys in an exciting encounter with Sean O’Meara scoring a brace. Our 12C’s which are a mixture of under 11’s and 12’s gave a good account of themselves before losing 3-0 to neighbours Wicklow Town. The under 13A’s lost 4-1 at home to local rivals Wicklow Town with Jamie Noble scoring their lone goal.
Sunday action saw our under 8 green team lose 4-2 away to Ashford, Joe Culleton and Steven Kavanagh hit the back of the net for Wicklow, our 10B’s lost 7-3 to Wicklow Town with Cormac Waldron, Aaron Cavanagh and Matthew Porter all scoring a goal a piece. The 11B’s played out an exciting 2-2 draw away to Glencormac, Cole Byrne and Jordan Younger scored the Rovers goals. The 12A’s and 12B’s were both involved in thrilling 2-2 draws, firstly the 12A’s drew with Arklow Town A, Fionn Luddy nabbed both their goals. The 12B’s drew 2-2 with Rathnew , Conor Leonard and Finn Egan Barron found the back of the net for Rovers. Our 14A’s defeated Greystones Utd by three goals to one, Daniel Fitzsimons scored his second of the campaign with Sean Leonard and Jack Colaluca netting their first goals of the season to earn all three points to make it six points from a possible six. An under strength 14B’s lost heavily away to Roundwood on a 9-0 score line but to their credit they never gave up and gave it their all. The under 15’s made it two wins from two games with a hard fought away win over St Patricks. Stephen Finlay, Luca Rampersaud and Patrick O’Keane all netted a goal each in a narrow 3-2 victory.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 28th SEPTEMBER ‘14

The first team gained three excellent points on the road when they defeated Garda FC 6-2 on Friday night. An excellent hat-trick from Gareth Murphy laid the foundations for this impressive victory. Singles from Tommy Smullen, Sean Duffy and Peter Finnegan accounted for their tally to move them onto six points in the league.
Our second team continued their great start to the season with a 3-1 away win over CYM Terenure, a brace from Maurice Dunne and one from Sean Tobin earned them all three points which keeps them in the top three in the table.
The under 17’s were involved in a six goal thriller at the Whitegates against Aughrim Rangers with honours even at the end of ninety minutes. Rovers raced into a two goal lead with two clinical finishes from the impressive Colin O’Toole but a lapse of concentration let the away side back into the game. Aughrim made it 2-2 with an excellent goal but Rovers showed great spirit when they went back in front when Adam Browne fired home from eight yards. Yet again the away team drew level to make it 3-3. Both sides had chances to win the game but in truth a draw was probably a fair result as both teams had the chances to win and neither team would have deserved to lose.

Junior action on Saturday saw our under 8 green team take on Arklow Town in what proved to be a very exciting game of football. In line with requests from the WDSL we will no longer be publishing results from non competitive matches but as the weeks go by we will give goalscorers. In the above game Finn Dunne scored two with Steven Kavanagh, Killian Dunne and Sonny McHale netting one a piece. Our 12A’s made the trip to Newbridge but unfortunately they lost out on a 3-1 scoreline in the National cup. Leading scorer Fionn Luddy scored their goal to make it six goals in three games. The 12B’s were involved in a six goal thriller when they travelled to take on Arklow Town, finding themselves 3-0 down at half time they came out in the second period a completely different team and performed an amazing comeback to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw. Scott Bushe started the comeback with their first and then Evan Dwyer pulled it back to 3-2 before Scott Bushe completed the fight back with Rovers third and a share of the points. Our 12C’s came up against a very strong Coolboy outfit losing heavily by eight goals to nil. The under 14A’s recorded an impressive 5-1 win away to Portlaoise in the National cup, Daniel Fitzsimons led the way with two goals with Tristan O’Toole, Jack Colaluca and Sean Farrell all adding singles in what was an excellent win. They now take on Templeogue Utd in round two. The under 15’s will be kicking themselves, they made the long journey to Athlone to take on Willow Park in the National cup. Leading 1-0 with three minutes to go they conceded two soft goals to cruelly lose out 2-1. James Lang scored Rovers goal.
Sunday saw the 8 white team play Arklow Utd, unfortunately we had no goalscorers on the day. Our 9 green team took on Greystones, their scorers on the day were Charlie Czwalina 2 and Lee Brown and Josh Butler nabbing one each. The 9 whites played in an exciting game with Aughrim, Eoin Kennedy scored for them. The under 10A’s defeated St Anthonys 3-1 with Jack Noble hitting the net twice and Cole Byrne adding the other, a special mention goes to Rory Hennessey who put in a man of the match performance. The 10B’s recorded a narrow 2-1 win over Rathnew with Cormac Fitzsimons scoring one goal and the other coming by way of an own goal. The 11A’s beat Rathnew 8-1 with Conor Hunter scoring a fantastic hat-trick, singles from Tom Hodgkinson, Mark Hodgkinson, Sean O’Meara, Callum Gibney and Conor Luddy accounted for their tally. Our 13B’s lost 3-1 away to Shamrock Bhoys with Dylan Doyle getting their goal. Rhuain Doyle hit the net twice for the 13B’s in their 2-2 draw with St Anthonys. The 14B’s were unlucky to go down 4-2 to Rathnew, Ciaran Byrne and Joe Geraghty scoring their goals in a good team performance.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish George Power a speedy recovery from a recent illness, we all hope your on the mend and look forward to seeing you up and about very soon, get well soon George.

The club have now held two nights of their four registration nights for all club membership fees, we would like to thank everyone for coming along to our first two nights. The dates and times for the next two nights are as follows: Friday 3rd October 7 pm till 9 pm and Friday 10th October 7 pm till 9 pm. All registration nights will take place in the clubhouse in the Whitegates and we encourage all members to please try to make one of the next two scheduled nights, thank you.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th OCTOBER 2014

The first team had an excellent 5-0 home win over Rathcoole Boys, this win moves them up to within touching distance of the promotion spots. Sean Duffy set them on their way with the first. Ricki Quinn then scored a David Beckham special, the lads were awarded a free kick midway inside their own half, Ricki’s quick thinking saw him lob the keeper from the resulting free to make it 2-0 for what has to be favourite for goal of the season. Further goals from Tommy Smullen, Gareth Murphy and Chris Burgess saw them run out comfortable winners in the end. But there’s no doubt the talking point of the game was Ricki’s wonder goal, a couple of hours after the end of the game rumour has it that the free kick was from inside his own area.
The second team played Dunboyne in a preliminary round game in the Noel Ryan cup, the lads went in 1-0 up at the break through Maurice Dunne’s seventh goal of the season and this proved to be the only goal of the match to earn the lads a safe passage to the first round proper. In truth they could have made it more comfortable as they had three of four very good chances to increase their lead. On the day Paul Alexander was a rock at the centre of the defence while the evergreen Greg Dunne prowled the middle of the park with his usual committed performance.
Our under 17’s suffered their first defeat of the season losing 2-1 at home to Arklow Utd, after going 2-0 down they battled back with Mark Darragh scoring to give them hope, even though they created several chances they failed to convert any them as the away team held on.
On Saturday the under 9 Whites played Carnew giving a good account of themselves, Evan Conyard was on the score sheet for them to claim his third of the season. Our 11A's were involved in a seven goal thriller with Arklow Utd, Mark Hodgkinson hit two goals with Callum Gibney and Jack Ryan scoring one each in an exciting 4-3 victory. The 13B's went down 3-1 to Arklow Town, Aidan Hennessy nabbing their goal.
Junior action on Sunday saw the under 8 green team play an exciting game with St Anthonys, Steven Kavanagh scored two with Joe Culleton and Johnny Bourne getting one a piece. The 10A’s came out on top of a seven goal thriller with Wolfe Tone winning 4-3. Evan Burke, Cole Byrne, Jack Noble and Charlie Phelan were all on the score sheet. The 10B’s went down 3-1 to Coolboy Rgrs with Harry Tobin notching their goal in a good battling team performance. The 11B’s lost 8-0 to a strong Rathnew side. Another seven goal thriller saw our 12A’s lose 4-3 away to Greystones Utd, Connor Lewins, Fionn Luddy and Harry Hodgkinson were their marksmen. The 12C’s went down 6-0 to Wicklow Town. The 14A’s went goal crazy when they defeated Arklow Town 10-2, Conor Byrne smashed home five goals with Sean Leonard helping himself to two. Daniel Fitzsimons, Tristan O’Toole and Tom Farrell added one each to complete the total. Our 14B’s lost out 5-1 to Roundwood with David McNabb scoring their goal. All other game over the weekend were called off.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th OCTOBER 2014

The first team suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat away to Kinamanagh on a day when nothing went right for them, they found themselves 2-0 down before they could get a foot hold in the game. Just before the break they went 3-0 down to leave them with a mountain to climb. To their credit they came out in the second period and gave a better display pulling one back from a Gareth Murphy strike before the home side added a fourth.
The second team’s recent good run came to an abrupt end in the Whitegates on Saturday when they lost 3-1 to Verona. Their only other defeat in the league so far this season came away to the same opposition. In fairness on the day Verona probably deserved their win as they were sharper to the ball and when the chances came their way they took them. Leading scorer Maurice Dunne scored the Rovers goal in what was a bad day at the office with Darren Kavanagh in the Rovers defence been Rovers best player on the day.
The under 17’s took on Ashford Rovs in the youths league and they earned a point in a 3-3 away draw. Hugh Humby put the lads 1-0 up and then Oisin Breen added a second. Ashford came roaring back with two goals to send the sides in level at the break. The second half saw both sides hit the back of the net once a piece with Mark Darragh netting for the lads to give them a deserved share of the points against a side a year older than themselves.
In junior action on Saturday the under 9 white team travelled to take on Coolboy Rgrs and enjoyed an entertaining game of football, Ben Lyons scored for them. The 10A’s made it four wins from four when they won 3-0 against Greystones Utd, Charlie Phelan scored two and Peter Dunne got the other to maintain their one hundred percent start. Our 11B’s gave it their all in their game away to Greystones Utd but in the end they were on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. The 12B’s recorded a good 3-1 away win in the under 12 combined cup against Greystones Utd, A brace from Conor Leonard and one from Luke Horan gives the lads a two goal cushion going into the home second leg. The 13A’s proved way too strong for Arklow Town C in the 13’s combined cup winning 15-0, Paul Marah led the way with five goals, Cian Ward and Nathan Sullivan both scored hat-tricks with Dylan Doyle, Frankie Reynolds, Scott Sheridan and Craig Anderson all scoring singles to make the second leg a meaningless game. The 13B’s went down 9-0 away to Coolboy Rgrs to give them a mountain to climb in the second leg.
Sunday’s action saw the under 8 green team play Ashford in an exciting match with Finn Dunne scoring for Wicklow. The 9 green team were involved in a thriller with Arklow Town, Charlie Czwalina, Brian McCaul, Josh Butler and Adam Doyle all scored a goal each. The 11A’s played out a 2-2 draw with Ashford with Tiernan O’Brien and Callum Gibney getting on the score sheet. The 12C’s lost 7-0 away to a very strong Coolboy side. Our 14A’s defeated Arklow Town 14-0, Daniel Fitzsimons nabbed five goals with Sean Leonard and Conor Byrne both netting hat-tricks. Jack Colaluca, Fiachra O’Briain and Sean Farrell all added singles. Our under 15’s were involved in an eight goal thriller with Arklow Town drawing 4-4. Luca Rampersaud hit two with Paul King scoring one with the fourth coming in the shape of an own goal.
The club are holding a Last Man Standing competition, every member of the club should have received registration forms to sell for the competition by this stage. The cost of entry is €10. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th OCTOBER 2014

The first team played out a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Skerries Town, they went into an early lead when Sean Duffy fired home but it was short lived as the away side hit back with two goals to go in at the break 2-1 up. Rovers didn’t create a lot of clear cut chances in the first period but the second half was a totally different story with numerous chances been created by the lads. Chris Burgess equalised for them and had a second goal ruled out for what the referee harshly judged to be handball. Rovers work rate in the second half deserved more but they had to settle for a share of the spoils, which the away side were more than happy with. If the first half performance had matched their second half display they possibly would have gained all three points.
Saturdays junior action was limited this week, the 11B’s had a good 7-1 win away to Fassaroe YC, Jordan Younger led the way with an excellent hat-trick with Sam Christie, Ruaidhri Kelly, Oran Dempsey and Liam Nicholson all adding singles to complete their seven goal haul. Our under 13A team progressed to round three of the SFAI cup when they defeated Wolfe Tone 4-1 at the Whitegates. Paul Marah brought his total for the season to nine when he netted twice. Scott Sheridan and Dylan Doyle made it three each for the campaign when they scored one a piece. Their reward for this victory is an away tie against Naas or Esker Celtic. The 13B’s went down 2-0 at home to St Anthonys in what was an evenly contested game, with a bit of luck the lads could have got something from the game. The scheduled games for our 11A's and 12B’s were called off.
On Sunday the under 14 girls won 4-1 away to Greystones Utd, two goals from Niamh Caffrey and one each from Grainne Phelan and Holly McSorley accounted for their total. The under 8 green team were involved in a thriller with Arklow Town, Steven Kavanagh scored two with Finn Dunne notching one. The under 8 white team came up against a very good Arklow Utd team and hard as they tried they couldn’t breach the Arklow defence. Our under 9 green team played out a very tight game with Greystones Utd, Josh Butler hit the goal for the green’s. The under 9 white team also had a close battle with Greystones Utd, unluckily for the white’s they didn’t find the back of the net. The 10A’s lost their one hundred percent record when they narrowly went down 1-0  Arklow Town in what was a closely fought encounter. The 12C team which is a mixture of under 11’s and 12’s went down 7-1 to a very strong Enniskerry team, they probably didn’t deserve to lose by this score as they put in a great spirited display, Conaill Molloy netted for them on the day. The under 15’s won 10-0 at home to Wicklow Town, the feature of the game was two hat-tricks, one each from Paul King and Stuart Cox. Ronan Murray helped himself to a brace with Luca Rampersaud and Stephen Finlay adding singles to complete the scoring.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th OCTOBER 2014

The first team played Maynooth Town University at the Whitegates on Sunday morning, the match was very entertaining with both sides givng a hundred percent. The game finished all square at 2-2, Rovers went in front when Chris Burgess found the net with a fine header which gave them a one goal lead at the break. Shortly into the second half the lads increased their lead when a thunderous effort from outside the box from Sean Tobin nestled in the bottom right corner of the net to put them 2-0 up. In a period of ten minutes midway through the second half the lads switched off and this allowed the visitors back into the game with two goals to square the game. Credit to what is a very young Rovers team they battled their way back into the game and if they were a bit more clinical in front of goal they could have claimed all three points against a very strong Maynooth side. Rikki Quinn and David Rowan in the heart of the Rovers defence put in good shifts with Luke Byrne a constant thorn in the side of the away team further up the field. In truth the whole team put in a good team performance providing a very entertaining game of football.
Our second team were involved in a third versus fourth placed game on Saturday. Fourth placed Tymon Celtic came to the Whitegates in a confident mood lying one place and one point behind Rovers with two games in hand. The lads were in excellent form putting Tymon to the sword by hammering four goals past the visitors without reply. Top scorer Maurice Dunne set them on their way and then added a second before the break to put them 2-0 up at the interval. Not to be out done Ciaran McGettigan scored two well taken goals to give the lads a convincing 4-0 victory to keep them on course for promotion. This win puts them into second place in the table.
The club’s AGM will take place on Monday 24th of November in the clubhouse meeting room at the Whitegates. The meeting will start at 7.30 pm sharp, all members are encouraged to attend the meeting. Please arrive early as the meeting will start at 7.30 sharp.
Our Last Man Standing competition kicked off last weekend with 189 participants competing for the €500 prize. Unfortunately 91 players fell at the first hurdle [doesn’t include QPR v Aston Villa game on Monday night], 31 people went with Liverpool, Man City 23, Tottenham 18, West Brom 10, Chelsea 8 and Man Utd 1.  On the plus side 92 players with [QPR v Aston Villa still to be played at the time of going to print] definitely going through to week 2, all the people who selected Southampton, Everton, Swansea, and Arsenal advanced to the next stage of the competition and a step closer to the prize. The club would like to thank everyone for supporting this very important fundraiser which we hope to run on a regular basis, so if you fell at the first hurdle you will get the chance to regain the bragging rights from your mates that are giving you a hard time after your elimination. All proceeds from our Last Man Standing fundraiser will go directly into funds towards the installation of our floodlights project. This is why its very important for all club members to get behind this fundraiser as this project is to the benefit of both senior and junior members of the club. Once again a big thanks goes out to all the managers, committee members and club members who made the effort to get people to register for Last Man Standing. But most of all we would like to thank all 189 participants for supporting our competition, we appreciate your support and once again thank you all.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd NOVEMBER 2014

Our first team travelled to take on title chasing Portmarnock on Sunday and were involved in a seven goal thriller. The lads fell 3-0 behind but showed great character in battling back. Chris Burgess pulled one back for his eighth of the season, then Luke Byrne slotted home from the penalty spot for his first of the campaign to make it 3-2. The home side gave themselves breathing space when they notched a fourth but Rovers hit back straight away when Luke Byrne nabbed his second from the penalty spot. The lads gave a hundred percent in this game and were very unlucky not to get something from the match.
The second team put in a very impressive display in a 5-2 home win over higher ranked Glenville in the first round of the Noel Ryan cup. The first period saw the away side reduced to ten men before Rovers cut loose, Maurice Dunne hit the first of his three goals to set the lads on their way, Daryl Sullivan scored the second to make it 2-0 at the break. Two further goals from leading scorer Maurice Dunne and a first of the season for Shane Morley saw the lads storm into a 5-0 lead. The only down side to the game was when the team seem to switch off in the last ten minutes allowing the away side in for two consolation goals.
The under 17’s earned an excellent point away to league leaders Arklow Utd, finding themselves 1-0 down at the break they battled back in the second half to secure a point when Hugh Humby fired home the equaliser in what was a good battling performance.
Junior action on Saturday saw the under 8 green’s involved in a thriller with Newtown Juniors, two goals a piece from Sonny McHale and Finn Dunne and one from Senan O’Donovan were the Rovers scorers in a highly entertaining match. The lads would like to thank former Stoke, West Ham and Sunderland player Clive Clarke for letting them be part of a group photo with the Newtown team. The 9 green team played St Anthonys and put in an excellent display, Charlie Czwalina and Liam Burke both hit two with Jack Macklin and Brian McCaul nabbing singles. The 10B’s lost 5-1 away to Glencormac Utd with Harry Tobin scoring his second of the campaign. The 12A’s progressed to the second round of the combined cup with a comfortable 6-0 win away to Roundwood, a brace from Fionn Luddy and singles from Mark O’Brien, Samuel Bishop, Connor Lewins and Adam O’Reilly accounted for their six goal haul. Our 13A’s received a walkover from Arklow Town C. The under 15’s suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat away to Arklow Town losing 8-5 on aggregate. Their goal came in the shape of an own goal.
Sunday’s action saw the under 9 white team play some great football against Greystones Utd red team, Ben Lyons helped himself to a brace with Eoin Kennedy scoring one in an exciting encounter. The 10A’s kept their title charge on course with a good 2-0 home win over Aughrim Rangers, Charlie Phelan hit the net twice in a good all round team performance. The 11A’s earned an excellent point in a 2-2 draw away to Arklow Town A, Sean O’Meara and Tiernan O’Brien scored the goals that earned them a fantastic point. Our 11B’s lost out narrowly in a very tight game at home to Glencormac Utd going down 1-0. The 12B’s progressed to round two of the combined cup when they defeated Greystones Utd 6-0, Luke Horan scored two with Scott Bushe, Finn Egan Barron, Kevin Leonard and Noah Sheridan all hitting singles. The 12C’s lost 9-1 to a very strong Coolboy side, Ben Lawless nabbed a consolation goal on the day. Rhuain Doyle hit the Rovers goal for the 13B’s in their 9-1 cup defeat to Coolboy Rangers. The 14 girls won 4-0 against Greystones, Niamh Caffrey scored two with Grainne Phelan and Sinead McGettigan scoring one each. Our under 14A team were unlucky to lose 2-1 away to Templeogue Utd in the second round of the National cup, in a game that could have went either way saw Daniel Fitzsimons notch the Rovers goal. The 14B’s put in a spirited display against a physically bigger Aughrim team before going down 5-1, David McNabb slotted home their goal.
Everyone at the club would like to wish Stephen Earls a speedy recovery from an ankle injury he suffered in a recent match against Maynooth Town, we all hope to see you back on the playing field very soon, get well soon Stephen.
The club’s AGM will take place on Monday 24th of November in the clubhouse meeting room at the Whitegates. The meeting will start at 7.30 pm sharp, all members are encouraged to attend the meeting. Please arrive early as the meeting will start at 7.30 sharp.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of George Pegman [Greystones] who sadly passed away recently, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th NOVEMBER 2014

The first team kicked off the weekend fixtures on Friday with an away match to Rathcoole Boys, Gareth Murphy and Sean Tobin scored one each to put them 2-0 up but they didn’t close the game out allowing their opponents back in to the game with two goals of their own to earn a share of the points in a 2-2 draw.
The second team also drew 2-2 at the weekend, they entertained Rathcoole Boys on Saturday. After a scoreless first half, it was Rovers who drew first blood when Mark Delaney slotted home when he got on the end of a pinpoint cross from Liam Kavanagh. Disaster struck midway through the half when opponents St John Bosco hit two quick goals to go 2-1 in front. In truth the lads were struggling to make any impact on the away side rearguard and just when it looked as the game was petering out a quick ball forward into the danger area resulted with Rovers earning a penalty, which leading scorer Maurice Dunne duly dispatched to the back of the net to earn the lads a point. On the day the lads didn’t cause their opponents enough problems in the final third but on the few occasions they did it was when they moved the ball forward quickly and this proved to be the case with our two goals.
On the junior front a few games fell foul of the bad weather, the 10B’s, 11A’s, 11B’s, 12A’s, 12B’s, 12C’s and 13B’s games were all victims of the weather. The under 8 green team played out an exciting tussle with Rathnew, Sonny McHale hit his fourth goal of the season in this game. The under 8 white team came up against a very strong Coolboy Rgrs team but to their credit they battled all the way against a physically stronger side. Our under 9 green team were involved in a thriller with Arklow Town , Tom Donoghue, Josh Butler and Jack Macklin all hit the back of the net for Rovers in a game between two evenly matched sides. The under 9 white team entertained Avonmore and both teams provide some good football for the watching spectators, Eoin Kennedy smashed home a brace of goals. The 13A’s made the journey to Naas to take on the local side in the third round of the SFAI cup but unfortunately the home side proved way too strong defeating the lads 10-0. Our under 14 girls lost 4-1 to Mount Merrion with Sinead McGettigan claiming her second goal of the season. The 14A’s remain top of the premier when they defeated Greystones Utd 3-0, a goal a piece for Jack Colaluca, Cillian Kelly and Tristan O’Toole paved the way for their win. The 14B’s drew 2-2 with Wolfe Tone to gain their first point of the season, this result shows the steady improvement they have been making since the start of the season. They lost 10-1 to the same opponents in the first game of the campaign so to hold them to a draw shows how good a result this was, David McNaab and Luke Whyte scored their goals in what was a good all round team performance. Our under 15’s recorded an excellent 3-0 away win against Avonmore, Ciaran Coffey, Luca Rampersaud and an own goal accounted for their tally.
The club’s AGM will take place on Monday 24th of November in the clubhouse meeting room at the Whitegates. The meeting will start at 7.30 pm sharp, all members are encouraged to attend the meeting. Please arrive early as the meeting will start at 7.30 sharp.
Everyone at the club would like to congratulate our former striker Davy O’Sullivan who recently was awarded the honour of Airtricity League of Ireland division 1 player of the year. Davy has turned in excellent performances week in week out for his club Longford Town, while also hitting 21 goals which propelled them to the division 1 title and promotion to the League of Ireland premier division. Once again Davy well done, everyone at Wicklow Rovers is proud of your achievements.
Everyone at the club would like to wish Gail Dunne a speedy recovery from a recent illness, we all hope to see you out and about very soon, get well soon Gail.
Our Last Man Standing competition saw 25 casualties at the weekend, 7 people selected Man City and West Ham, 3 went with Arsenal, Tottenham and Hull with 2 going for Everton. WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th NOVEMBER 2014

The second team took on Kilnamanagh in the second round of the Leinster Junior cup on Saturday, the away side ply their trade two leagues above the lads so it was always going to be a tough game. This was a typical cup tie, all action, plenty of chances and biting challenges. It was the away side who got off to a dream start going 2-0 up by the midway point of the first half. The lads battled back when they reduced the deficit in the shape of a deflected goal. The second half saw the lads have most of the possession and they got their rewards when Cormac Byrne levelled matters with an excellent finish. Rovers piled forward in search of the winner creating chance after chance but luck was against them. The away side went in front against the run of play but to the lads credit they fought back again and it was Mark Delaney who sent the game to extra time when he scored Rovers third in the last minute. Extra time failed to separate the two teams and it went to the dreaded penalty shoot out which the lads unfortunately lost out by five penalties to four.
In junior action on Saturday the under 11B’s went down to a strong Rathnew team losing 14-1, the lads battled to the end with Jordan Younger scoring his fifth of the season. The 12A’s kept their hopes of the title alive with a comprehensive 10-3 win over Arklow Town, Fionn Luddy led the way when he hit a fantastic four goals, Max Kearney nabbed a brace with Sam Brown, Connor Lewins, Samuel Bishop and Ryan Kavanagh all registering singles. Our 13B’s recorded an excellent 6-3 win over Aughrim Rgrs, Ewan Dwyer smashed home a hat-trick, Charlie Christie scored his first of the campaign with Rhuain Doyle and Tom O’Shea also hitting the net. The 14A’s progressed to the second round of the combined cup with a comfortable second leg 7-0 win over Arklow Town B, Daniel Fitzsimons netted twice, with Dylan Frazer, Jack Colaluca, Tristan O’Toole, Ryan Corrigan and Conor Byrne to earn them an easy passage to the next round. All other games fell foul of the weather.
Everyone at the club would like to congratulate club member Brian O’Sullivan who recently was awarded a silver medal at the National Bravery Awards, Brian dived into the water in Wicklow harbour to come to the aid of a man who got into difficulty back in July 2013. At the time Brian who was just 15 years old noticed the man was struggling so he dived in to help him, when Brian got to him he was floating face down in the water but brave Brian manage to lift the distressed man’s head out of the water and hold on to him till assistance came his way. Once again Brian congratulations on your award, an award that was well deserved for an extradionary feat of bravery.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish Sandra Rampersaud a speedy recovery from a recent illness, we all hope your up and about very soon, get well soon Sandra.

WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 23rd NOVEMBER 2014

The first team had a tough game in the second round of the Metropolitan cup at the weekend, when you want to test yourself against the best they don’t come any better than cup holders Tolka Rovers. Tolka also top the table in the top league of the intermediate section so they don’t come any bigger than that. The early exchanges were cagey by both sides with neither keeper been tested. The first period was even enough with the away team probably just about shading it. The holders went in front with a thunderous effort from a 35 yard free kick but the lads responded well and were on level terms four minutes later, Luke Byrne skipped past two players and crossed for Gareth Murphy to fire home. Arthur Delahunt made two fantastic saves just before the break to send the sides in all square at the break. Tolka went in front in the early part of the second half but credit has to go to the lads, they more than matched their higher ranked opponents and should have drawn level on a couple of occasions. In the dying minutes of the game the lads got caught on the break when Tolka earned a penalty, which was converted and then added a fourth in injury time which flattered the holders. The lads gave a good account of themselves and for most of the match they were more than a match for their opponents.
With no youths or senior games on Saturday due to waterlogged pitches, it was down to the juniors of the club to provide our Saturday football. Our under 8 white team played some great football against Newtown Juniors, the highlight was a fantastic hat-trick from Steven Kavanagh, Joe Culleton hit two while Ciaran Walton and Sonny McHale notched one each. The under 9 green team were involved in a tight tussle with St Anthonys yellow team with very little between the two teams. Josh Butler hit his fourth goal of the season in a good all round team performance. The 10B’s lost out 9-4 in an exciting encounter with near neighbours Rathnew, a lot of good football was provided by both sides, Tom Phelan nabbed two goals with Aaron Cavanagh and Matthew Porter scoring one a piece. Not to be out done by our 10B’s, the 11A’s also provided a thirteen goal thriller away to Arklow Utd, both Rovers and Arklow Utd kept their supporters on the edge of their seats right up till the end of the game. Arklow eventually won 7-6 in a thrill a minute match which was a good advert for football. Two goals each from Conor Hunter and Willoughby Woods and one each from Sean O’Meara and Callum Gibney were the Rovers scorers on the day. Our 12A’s had an excellent win over local rivals Rathnew winning 7-0, two goals from Connor Lewins and Samuel Bishop set them on their way, Max Kearney, Harry Hodgkinson and Fionn Luddy all added singles to earn three points to keep their title hopes on track. Our 12C’s came up against a very strong Coolboy team, even though the lads lost 8-0 they kept trying to play football and battled to the final whistle and with a bit of luck on their side they might have had a couple of goals of their own. The 13A’s lost 5-3 to Greystones Utd, Dylan Doyle, Paul Marah and Craig Anderson hit the Rovers goals in a game which showed a big improvement since they last met their opponents. The 13B’s earned a fantastic point away to Arklow Town, in a close game between two evenly matched sides a 2-2 draw seemed a fair result, Tom O’Shea and Charlie Christie plundered the Rovers goals in a good team performance.
On Sunday our under 10A’s went down narrowly on a 2-1 scoreline to Wolfe Tone A, in a tight game Charlie Phelan notched his sixth goal of the campaign. The 11B’s went down to a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Greystones at the Whitegates. Our under 14A’s kept up their relentless pursuit of the premier title when they defeated Arklow Town 5-2, a brace from Daniel Fitzsimons to make it fifteen for the season, two from Conor Byrne to put him one behind Fitzsimons in the goalscorers table and a single from Jack Colaluca accounted for their tally to keep them on top of the pile.
Our Last Man Standing competition saw 11 casualties on Saturday, eleven people were on Stoke City who lost to Burnley to unfortunately exit the competition. Joining them through the exit doors were three more people who were on Liverpool on Sunday as they lost to Crystal Palace. Forty four people have made it through to week 5 with one more person going with Southampton on the Monday night which we didn’t have the result at the time of going to print. Please note anyone left in that makes it past next weekends fixtures will be required to select a team from a full set of fixtures on Tuesday/Wednesday the 2nd/3rd of December.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers would like to congratulate second team player Maurice Dunne and Tanya Neilan on the arrival of baby Eva, we would like to wish you all the best for the future. Rumour has it that grandad Johnny was spotted during the week showing his new grandaughter Eva how to cut the grass at the Whitegates. Once again congrats to Maurice and Tanya.

WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 30th NOVEMBER 2014

The first team were the only senior team in the club in action at the weekend and they were involved in a six goal thriller away to St John Bosco on Saturday night, a brace from Peter Finnegan and a single from Luke Byrne earned a share of the spoils between two teams that are on the fringe of the promotion spots. Rovers have now drawn four of their last five league games and really need to start picking up wins to force their way into promotion contention.
Saturday’s junior action saw our under 8 green team play Rathnew green’s in a very even tussle, both teams produced some excellent football. The under 9 green team took on Arklow Town black team in what was a very closely fought game with very little between the two teams, George O’Neill was on the score sheet for Rovers. The 10A’s got back to winning ways with goals from Evan Burke and an own goal to secure all three points in a 2-0 win over St Anthonys, a special mention has to be given to Rory Hennessey who pulled off an excellent save which changed the course of the game in his team’s favour in what was a good all round team performance. Our 10B’s went down 4-1 to Coolboy Rgrs with Aaron Cavanagh scoring his third of the campaign. The 11A’s recorded a good 5-2 win over neighbours Rathnew, both Callum Gibney and Conor Hunter hit two each with Mark Hodgkinson netting one. The 12A’s kept their excellent winning run going when they hit St Anthonys for eight, a splendid hat-trick from Max Kearney, a brace a piece from Fionn Luddy and Connor Lewins and a single from Adam O’Reilly helped them to an 8-0 victory and keeps them well in the mix for the title. The 13B’s came up against a very strong Newtown Juniors side losing 8-0 but to their credit they battled to the end. The 14A’s are another team who are in the hunt for a premier title and they cemented their place at the top of the pile when they comprehensively defeated Avonmore 11-2. The highlight of the game was to see Rovers two leading goalscorers Daniel Fitzsimons and Conor Byrne smash home four goals each to make it 19 and 18 respectively for the season. Tristan O’Toole helped himself to a brace with Jack Colaluca nabbing one goal.
Sunday saw the under 8 white team play away to Arklow Town, after an excellent performance by both sides Rovers were rewarded with goals from Sean Patrick Guerin, Cillian Czwalina and Colin Lezley. The 9 white team put in a fine display away to Greystones Utd, Ben Lyons scored two goals. The 11B’s lost 4-2 to Coolboy with Charlie Phelan and Liam Nicholson scoring the goals. Our 12B’s had a good 7-0 win in a local derby against Wicklow Town, Noah Sheridan and Luke Long hit two each, Ben Free, Conor Leonard and Kieran Fitzpatrick nabbed one each. Our 13A’s went down 3-1 away to Arklow Town, Nathan Sullivan scoring their goal. Ryan Murphy hit the goal for the 14B’s in their 3-1 defeat to Wolfe Tone. The 15A’s kept their title challenge on track with a fine 6-1 win over St Anthonys, Luca Rampersaud plundered an excellent hat-trick, two from Paul King and one from Stephen Finlay made up the total.
The club would like to thank everyone who attended our AGM recently, it was nice to see the people turn out showing an interest in their club. There were some very positive suggestions from the people in attendance on how to progress our club forward going into the future. It has to be said that the committee thought it was one of our more productive AGM’s for many a year with people suggesting ideas for fundraising, sponsorship and a plan to obtain a defibrillator. Also we had people expressing an interest in helping the club out in some capacity. Over the coming weeks we hope to put some of the ideas into operation in order to help our club prosper going forward. Once again thanks to all who attended our AGM.
As a result of an idea raised at our recent AGM the club are currently looking to obtain a defibrillator, with the help of a club member we have availed of a great opportunity to obtain a defibrillator from a first aid provider. If the club can collect 300 old mobile phones we will be given a defibrillator in exchange for the old phones. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th DECEMBER 2014

The first team recorded a convincing 5-1 home win over Confey FC on Sunday, they got off to a nightmare start when the visitors went one up from the penalty spot after only two minutes. The lads showed great character as they drew level with a Chris Burgess goal to send the teams in all square at the break in what was a fairly even half. Rovers stepped up the pace in the second period, two more goals from Chris Burgess to complete his hat-trick and one each from Gareth Murphy and a fine solo effort from Luke Byrne accounted for their total to push them up the table and onto the fringes of the promotion spots.
The second team had a bad day at the office on Saturday, Swords Celtic were the visitors to the Whitegates and they travelled back to north Dublin with all three points in the bag after a comprehensive 4-0 win. In what was a disappointing performance only Shane Morley played anywhere near their normal standard.
Our under 17’s made the trip to Arklow to take on league leaders Arklow United and returned home with a share of the spoils in what was an excellent all round team performance. Adam Browne and Hugh Humby from the penalty spot were the Rovers goalscorers on the day and if they had converted the numerous chances they created they could have won all three points.
In junior action on Saturday the under 10A’s drew 2-2 away to Greystones Utd, Charlie Phelan scored his seventh of the season with Paddy Saville getting his first. The 12B’s kept their unbeaten start to the season intact with a fine 4-2 win over Coolboy Rgrs. A brace from top scorer Conor Leonard and one a piece from Ben Free and Scott Bushe was enough to earn all three points. The 13A’s game with Roundwood ended all square at 1-1, Cian Ward notched his fourth of the campaign.
On Sunday the under 9 green team played Greystones Utd white team in a game that saw some good football played by both teams. The 10B’s went in front against Greystones Utd with a goal from Tom Phelan but they unfortunately conceded two late goals to lose out 2-1. Our 11A’s were involved in a thrilling end to end game with Arklow Town, a goal a piece from Willoughby Woods and Jack Ryan saw them earn a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw. The 13B’ s lost 6-1 away to Aughrim Rangers with Tom O’Shea scoring their goal. The 14B’s lost 5-2 to Enniskerry FC, David McNabb’s fourth of the season and Ryan Murphy’s second of the campaign were their scorers. The under 15’s made it six wins from six in the league with a 7-1 victory over Greystones Utd, a brace each from Luca Rampersaud, Stuart Cox and James Lang and a single from Paul King saw them maintain their one hundred percent record in the league.
