WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st JANUARY 2017

Well the big challenge match lived up to all expectation last week, the game between Wicklow Rovers and Arklow Town's over 40's in aid of Parkinsons entertained a large attendance. The Town came to do the business and they had the Wicklow lads wore out even before kick off when the Rovers lads could only watch on as the Arklow men went through their warm up routine. Indeed it paid off for Arklow as they made most of the early running as they put Rovers under pressure. Rovers  kept things tight at the back and also made the odd attack themselves. Rovers gradually got a foothold in the game but it was the Town who went in front which their first half efforts richly deserved. Rovers drew level from the penalty spot when John Loughlin hammered the ball home. The sides went in all square at the break. The Rovers sideline looked like a scene from casualty, four of the Rovers lads were out of action when they discovered they had muscles where they never knew they had. The second half saw Rovers push more forward and Billy Manley was called on a couple of times to dwart the men in green. Both sides had chances to go in front as the game was played at a frantic pace. Just when it looked like the game was heading for a penalty shootout Trapper Marah popped up with cool finish that was worthy of winning any match. Arklow did have one more excellent chance but Robert Hollingsworth in the Rovers goal pulled off a world class save to ensure Rovers ran out 2-1 winners. Wicklow Rovers would like to thank all the lads who turned out for the club, a big thanks goes to Arklow Town FC who turned out in large numbers to make the day so special. Many thanks to referee Mick Quinn and his assistants Butch Doran and Willie O'Brien for doing a great job. Thanks to Anthony Earls who helped out on the day. A massive thanks goes to Mandy O'Neill, Rachel Bolger, Katie O'Connor, Rachel Hodgkinson, Hannah Cox, Anne O'Neill, Brigid O'Reilly and Rianna O'Neill who ran the club shop on the day. Also a special thanks goes to Mandy for carrying out a collection around the pitch, well done Mandy. Thanks to Hannah Cox who was the club photographer on the day, some nice photos Hannah, all photos are posted on the club facebook page and the club website, well done Hannah. A big thanks goes to Edward Dunne, James Quinn and Derek Hannigan for making the event happen. Finally a massive thanks goes to all the supporters who came along to support the elder statesmen of both clubs and kindly donated to a worthy cause. In excess of €1,200 was raised on the day, once again a massive thanks to everyone involved. After the game the teams went back to Ernies for refreshments and to relive past times. Rumour has it that both sides are getting back into full time training in anticipation of the return match next year. Hopefully that will give the walking wounded time to recover.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 15th JANUARY 2016

Well we are still waiting to get back up to full capacity regards action on the playing field. With teams still not back playing since the Christmas break we were left with a curtailed programme of games. Our under 14B’s had a great result on Saturday, they took on Greystones United in Finn Park in a playoff for the right to take on Roundwood in the premier shield final. Both meetings between these two sides in the group part of the shield ended in two exciting 3-3 draws so it promised to be a thriller. Rovers came out on top on a 2-0 score line with the Rovers defence remaining tight through out. The lads were under strength but they battled their way to the final with a good team performance. The first goal came when Scott Bushe headed home his ninth goal of the season from a David Lally corner. The insurance goal came when Ben Free latched onto the breaking ball in the box after Luke Horan’s free kick broke loose in the area to fire home his seventh of the campaign and book their place in the final in what was a good all round team performance. Well done to Rob, Colm and the squad and good luck in the final.
On Sunday our under 13A's kept their impressive run in local competition going, having already blitzed their way to the premier shield final with a one hundred percent record, they are now continuing that winning streak as they made it three wins from three in the premier league with a 5-1 home win over Arklow Town. The highlight of the game was a great individual scoring feat from Jordan Younger who blasted home four goals to bring his tally for the season to twelve. Tom Hodgkinson nabbed his seventh of the season to complete the scoring in what was an excellent all round team performance. Our 16B's took on Wicklow Town in the under 15/16 challenge cup. The lads never really got going in this game with the Town really up for the game from the first kick, the lads conceded two early goals and were chasing the game after that. Nathan Sullivan played in Ryan Murphy to score midway through the second half to make a game of it, Rovers pushed hard but could not find an equaliser, the Town got a third right on full time for a deserved win. Our under 17's travelled to take on Greystones on a blustery morning by the sea in the first game of the pre season under 17 mini tournament featuring Wicklow Rovers,Greystones, Shankill, Ardmore and Arklow Town. Wicklow Rovers looked the sharper team through out and were comfortable 5-1 winners at the final whistle with Stephen Finlay and Luca Rampersaud both firing home a brace a piece, Stuart Cox completed the scoring with a single. This was great workout for the lads.
The club will be running our second Last Man Standing competition of the season starting on the 4th of February 2017. Anyone interested in taking part in our second competition should text their name and contact details to Jimmy Nolan at 087-9108706, also you can register through the same channels as you did in any of our previous Last Man Standing competitions. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 22nd JANUARY 2017

The senior men made their long awaited return back into action on the field of play on Friday night, unfortunately for them it ended in a 3-2 defeat away to Enniskerry YC. In what was a close thrilling game Ricki Quinn and Maurice Dunne fired home the Rovers goals. The lads had a lot of the possession in this game but were limited to long range efforts. They fell 2-0 behind in the first fifteen minutes but to their credit they battled back to worry the home side, Maurce Dunne scored from the spot before Enniskerry went 3-1 up. Ricki Quinn then pulled another one back but despite their best efforts the lads just couldn’t find an equaliser.
Saturdays junior action saw our under 14B's get their league campaign off to a flyer, on a high after making the premier shield final last week the lads went into this game with Arklow Town in Lamberton full of confidence and that showed with a good work man like performance to claim all three points in a 4-2 win. Luke Horan nabbed his first goals of the season when he netted twice, David Lally scored one to bring his tally to ten for the campaign with Lee Hamilton notching a single to move onto eight for the season in what was a good all round team performance. The 14C's came up against a very strong Roundwood side and found the going tough losing 8-1, Adam Shepherd nabbed the Rovers goal to claim his third of the season. In fairness to this team they have been placed in the premier division due to lack of teams and at this level they have been pitted against 'A' teams, which is a little unfair. But to their credit they turn out week after week despite heavy defeats, they turn out hail, rain or snow and a lot of the credit must go to manager Fred Boxall and his backroom team for encouraging this team week after week, well done to everyone involved.
Sunday’s action saw our 15A’s go down 4-1 to Wicklow Town, the lads put in a battling performance, Dylan Doyle scored his second goal of the season for Rovers. The under 16A’s kicked off their league campaign with a good 6-4 away win over Arklow Town, Sean Leonard fired in an excellent hat-trick to make it twelve for the season with Nathan Sullivan, Shane Lincoln and Jack Colaluca all registering singles. The 16B’s kicked off life in the premier grade with a fantastic 5-3 away win over St Anthonys, Nathan Wynne was another player who notched an excellent hat-trick as he took his total to eleven for the season, Ryan Murphy also moved on to eleven when he nabbed a brace in a good all round team performance.
The club will be running our second Last Man Standing competition of the season starting on the 4th of February 2017. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 29th JANUARY 2017

The senior team took on Ardmore Rovers in Whitegates last Friday and suffered a disappointing 3-2 defeat. Midway through the first half Wicklow went in front when Sean Tobin fired home. The lead didn't last long as Ardmore were level within a minute as they split open the Wicklow defence. Six minutes into the second period the Bray side went 2-1 up. With twenty minutes remaining Sean Tobin  had a great chance to level but his glancing header went the wrong side of the post. Ardmore scored the insurance goal with five minutes left on the clock to go 3-1 up. In injury time Riain Sweetman Burke scored the lads second goal when he stole in at the back post to slot home. On a disappointing night Mark Delaney, Hugh Humby and Ricki Quinn stood out for the lads.
Saturday’s junior action saw our under 11A’s record a hard earned 2-1 win away to Carnew in the under 12 league, Liam Burke hit the first goal after good work from Jack Macklin and Joshua Bishop. Carnew drew level but Rovers earned all three points when Joshua Bishop slotted home from the penalty spot.  Our 12A's made it two wins from two in the league when they defeated local rivals Wicklow Town. Goals from Ross McCrea, leading scorer Kai Fitzsimons and Sam Greene paved the way for this impressive victory and sends them off for their shield final next week full of confidence.   The 12B's made it three wins from three in the league when they beat previously unbeaten St Patricks 5-1. The lads turned in an excellent performance and were clinical in front of goal while in defence they remained tight through out. Peter Dunne doubled his tally for the season when he fired home a brace. A Charlie Phelan single means he now sits on eight in the goalscoring charts while Mikey Nolan nabbed his fourth of the campaign. Highlight of the game was a first ever competitive goal from Cian Leonard. Our 13A's suffered their first dropped points in local competition this season when Rathnew held the lads to a 1-1 draw. Jordan Younger nabbed his thirteenth goal of the season to earn the lads a hard earned point. The 15B's recorded a comprehensive 11-3 win over Avonmore, Nathan Sullivan produced an amazing solo goalscoring performance hitting seven of the Rovers goals to give him eleven for the season. Michael Ryan moves on to six after hitting a double with Thomas O'Neill and Daniel Murphy both scoring one each. Our 16A's took on Avonmore in the premier league in what was a dress rehersal for next weeks premier shield final. Honours were even at the final whistle with the game ending 2-2. Shane Lincoln scored his fourth of the season with Sean Farrell claiming his first of the campaign for the lads. Our 16B’s went down 4-2 to Dublin Oak Academy last Thursday night, Ryan Murphy scored Rovers first with Nacho Garcia nabbing the second.
Sunday saw our under 13 girls turn in a very impressive display when they defeated Lakelands 4-1 in their own backyard. In what was an excellent team performance from every player on duty the girls went about their business in clinical fashion. The prolific Molly Sweeney fired home a hat-trick with Aoife Caffrey notching a single. The 13B’s got their league campaign off to a winning start when they beat St Anthonys 3-2, a first of the season from Tom Farrelly set them on their way with Tim Hastie and Oran Dempsey also getting on the score sheet. Our 14B team secured all three points in a 4-0 home win over Arklow Celtic, Ben Free and Luke Horan both scored two a piece in what was a good all round team performance. The 14C’s went down to a heavy defeat to a big strong Coolboy side, the lads did give it their all but the bigger physical Coolboy team were just too strong for the lads. The 14A’s earned an excellent point away to Wicklow Town’s under 15’s. The Town have been going great guns this season so this was an impressive result for the lads considering they are playing a year above their natural age group. Samuel Bishop and Eoin Doyle scored the Rovers goals to secure an excellent point.
The club will be running our second Last Man Standing competition of the season starting this weekend 4th of February 2017. Anyone interested in taking part in our second competition should text their name and contact details to Jimmy Nolan at 087-9108706, also you can register through the same channels as you did in any of our previous Last Man Standing competitions. Week one fixtures have already be sent out to anyone that has registered. See club website at www.wicklowrovers.com for a full list of the rules.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th FEBRUARY 2017

The senior men went down 2-1 at home to Corduff FC at the Whitegates on Friday night. The lads were chasing the game from early on in the game as they got off to a disastrous start falling 1-0 behind after six minutes and then after twelve minutes they found themselves 2-0 down. In a first half of very little in the way of clear cut chances apart from the two goals it was a disappointing performance from the lads. The second half was a lot better as the lads pressed forward in search  of a way back into the game. They created a few half chances with Riain Sweetman Burke going close on a couple of occasions. Bryan Doyle gave the lads some hope when he fired home after seventy eight minutes. The lads created a couple of good openings in the last ten minutes but were unable to breach the Corduff defence for a second time.
Saturdays junior action saw  our under 12B's keep their great recent run in the league going when they made it four wins from four games when they recorded an excellent 2-0 away win over local rivals Rathnew. On a bad day for football both sides produced some terrific football to warm the hearts of the supporters and keep them entertained right up to the final whistle. This was an excellent game of football with both sides playing some fine attacking play. Ben Bowen and Cian Leonard scored the Rovers goals to capture all three points. A highlight of the game was the outstanding displays from both goalkeepers with both keepers pulling off some fantastic saves. The under 13B's went down narrowly to Greystones United A at the Whitegates. In a tight affair the lads were a little unlucky not to get something from the game finally losing out 1-0. Everyone gave it their all on a bad morning for football. The 16A's defeated their club team mates the 16B's 7-1 in the Whitegates. Nathan Sullivan led the way with an excellent haul of four goals. Conor Byrne, Shane Lincoln and Luke Whyte all nabbed one a piece.  Ryan Murphy nabbed the goal for the B’s.
On Sunday the under 13 girls continued their great run in the Metropolitan Girls League when they made it six wins from seven games when they defeated Lucan Utd 5-2 at Whitegates, the prolific Molly Sweeney brought her tally for the season to fifteen with a brace. Aoife Caffrey also fired home two to make it six for the season with Abi Farrell completing the scoring when she registered a single for her second of the season in what was an excellent all round team performance from the girls. The 14A’s defeated Roundwood 5-1 in a clinical performance, Eoin Doyle nabbed himself a brace to make it eleven for the season. Leading scorer Ross Quinn moved onto sixteen for the campaign with a single with Connor Lewins scoring a single to make it six for the season. Conor Leonard completed the five goal haul with his first of the season.
Round two of our Last Man Standing competition took place at the weekend and at the time of going to print we had 39 casualties. The biggest casualties of the weekend were the 30 players who selected Chelsea as they could only manage a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor against Burnley, Everton’s scoreless draw away to Middlesbrough saw 5 players make their exit, West Ham’s 2-2 draw at home with West Brom meant 3 players went out and Sunderland’s 4-0 hammering at the hands of Southampton saw a single player exit the competition. We had 99 players definitely through to round 3 at the time of going to print. Man Utd’s 2-0 win over Watford ensured 47 players went safely through, Arsenal ended their recent bad run with a 2-0 home win over Hull which helped 40 players progress. Six players made it through when their inspired selection Stoke narrowly defeated Crystal Palace 1-0, Swansea’s 2-0 win over last season’s champions Leicester saw another 5 players progress to the next round and finally one brave soul went with Liverpool and they were rewarded with a place in round three after the ‘Pool’ beat Tottenham 2-0. At the time of going to print we had to wait to see if 16 players who selected Man City in the Monday night game away to Bournemouth would join the 99 players who were safely through to round three. There is no Last Man Standing selections required for the next two weekends due to FA cup action next weekend and a reduced premiership programme the following weekend due to the EFL cup final. Fixtures for round 3 will be sent out on Monday 27th February for matches on the weekend of the 4th March.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th FEBRUARY 2017

Our seniors were in action on Friday night away to Drogheda Town, in what was a very uneventful match the lads lost out 2-1. Jim Foley had the best chance for Rovers in the first period but hit a shot straight at the keeper from the edge of the box! The two Drogheda goals came from set pieces with Maurice Dunne heading home the Rovers goal. Apart from the goals there wasn't a lot to report on in this game with both teams disappointing.
Saturday’s junior action saw our under 11A's return to league action when they entertained local neighbours Wicklow Town U12's. In a feisty opening period Rovers took a deserved lead. Charlie Czwalina reacted quickest to a loose ball just outside the box and finished superbly under pressure to make it 1-0 and bring his tally in competitive football to eighteen. Liam Burke quickly made it 2-0 with a fantastic finish for his eleventh of the season.  Things got even better for Rovers with six minutes to go to the half time break. A training ground corner made it 3-0. Josh Butler played a neat short corner to Jack Macklin who dribbled across the box and found the top corner to bring his tally to five for the campaign. This was a fantastic team performance from the lads.  Our under 13B' entertained Ashford Rovers at the Rocky Road in what proved to be a very exciting encounter. Ashford came into the game with two wins from two games so a tough game was on the cards for the lads. At the final whistle the game ended all square at 2-2, a point a piece for two good sides. Top scorer Tim Hastie hit his ninth of the season with Ruadhri Kelly nabbing his second of the campaign to earn the lads a well deserved point in an all round good team performance. Our 14C's lost 5-0 away to Greystones United, even in defeat the lads battled right up to the final whistle, as its been said before this little side are competing in the premier grade as a 'C' team and they have to be given a lot of credit as they fulfill their fixtures week after week even though results are not going their way. If any team needs a slice of luck or good fortune, it is this group of players. Yet again they showed great spirit and battling qualities, keep it going lads, your day will come. The 15A's took on Roundwood at the Whitegates in the under 15/16 challenge cup, the game ended up all square at one a piece. It was a tight encounter, which could have went either way. Paul Marah scored his fourth of the season when he fired home from the penalty spot.
On Sunday the under 13 girls made it seven wins from eight games when they defeated Terenure Rangers 7-2, the highlight of the game was an excellent individual scoring feat from Molly Sweeney who fired home a double hat-trick to take her tally for the season to twenty one. Aoife Caffrey nabbed a single to make it seven for the campaign in what was an excellent all round team performance. The 14A’s drew 1-1 with Arklow Town in a tight game, Samuel Bishop notched his third goal of the season to give the lads a well earned point. Our 14B’s had a bad day at the office when they went down 7-0 to Coolboy Rangers, the lads never reached their normal standards in this game and will just have to put it down as an off day. The 16B’s lost out by the odd goal in five when they lost 3-2 to Coolboy Rangers, Tom O’Shea hit a brace of goals in an exciting game of football in which the lads were a little unlucky not to get something from.
There is no Last Man Standing competition this coming weekend due to the EFL cup final and a reduced premiership programme. The competition resumes the weekend of the 4th of March.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne. The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at the Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th FEBRUARY 2017

The action on the playing field was curtailed at the weekend with the weather having a big say. The heavy overnight rain on Friday night put a lot of games to the sword. Of the games that did get the go ahead our under 14B’s produced a disappointing display against Roundwood on Saturday to make their exit from the premier cup going down 3-0. The lads never really got going in this game and at the moment they are going through a mini slump. The lads will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the coming weeks to push on with their challenge for the premier league and shield titles. Also on Saturday our 14C’s went down 7-1 away to Arklow Town A, Ben Lawless put the lads one up. The lads had two or three great chances to increase their lead but didn’t get the luck in front of goal. The lads controlled the first half but got hit with a sucker punch goal just before the break. Early in the second period Rovers created two clear cut openings but didn’t take their chances when they came their way. Arklow finished the stronger with the difference between the sides been the home side were the more ruthless in front of goal. Rovers manager Fred Boxall stated after the game that he was proud of his team’s performance and effort.
Only two games escaped the bad weather on Sunday, a very much under strength 15A’s went down 6-1 at home to local neighbours Wicklow Town, with only the bare eleven players the lads lost another player through injury early on to leave them a mountain to climb against a very much inform Town side, Frank Reynolds nabbed the lone Rovers goal. The 16B’s fared a lot better as they progressed to round two of the premier cup on the back of an 8-2 victory over Aughrim. Ryan Murphy fired home a brace to make it fifteen for the season, Nathan Wynne brought his tally to twelve with a single with Javier Rodriguez moving on to eleven with a single also. Wayne Costello, Jack O’Gorman, Myles Keogh and Tom O’Shea all hit one each to complete the eight goal haul in a good all round team performance.
Our Last Man Standing competition resumes this weekend and with 115 players left standing the next few weeks are going to be interesting. We have yet to have one of our previous winners take the title for the second time so will we see one of our previous winners or will we see yet another new champion. It will all be revealed over the coming weeks. Jim Foley, Anthony Earls, Jonathan Lewins, James Nolan Junior and Hughie Nolan all remain in the running to claim the title for the second time but there is a lot of potential football experts left in the competition who will provide stern opposition to our previous champions. We would like to wish all remaining 115 players the very best of luck in the remainder of the competition. Also we would like to once again thank everyone who participated in our competition, your continuous supported is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th MARCH 2017

Well for the second week running mother nature decimated football within the club. We even had less games than last week with all our home matches fallen victims of the heavy rain we had. Of all the games that were scheduled the only game to beat the weather was the under 14A’s match in the quarter final of the under 15 premier cup away to Arklow Town A. The lads recorded an excellent 2-0 win against their older opponents to progress to the semi final. Already assured of their place in the division one shield final at the year above their natural age group the lads are now off to a good start in the premier grade cup with this win. Eoin Doyle nabbed the first to bring his tally to twelve for the season with Adam Farrell notching the second goal for his first of the campaign and a safe passage to the semi final in what was an excellent all round team performance. The lads will now take on the winners of Roundwood and Coolboy Rangers in the semi final.
Our Last Man Standing competition has now reached the fourth round stage. In round three the biggest surprise was the game that was suppose to be the banker bet of the week and unfortunately for 39 players it was hot favourites Man Utd who let them down when they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth who played the whole second half with ten players. West Brom's recent good form tempted 8 players to select the Baggies to see off Crystal Palace but the Eagles ran out 2-0 winners spelling the end of the road for those 8 players. One player went with Burnley but after a five goal thriller the clarets lost out 3-2 to Swansea. Of the teams that helped their supporters through it was Man City who disposed of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light 2-0 to give 24 players a place in round four. Champions Leicester made 18 players happy with a 3-1 victory over Hull to ease their relegation worries and help those 18 players progress to next stage. Swansea's 3-2 win over Burnley saw 6 players move into the fourth round with Stoke providing a safe passage for 4 players after they saw off Middlesbrough 2-0. Tottenham’s 3-2 win at home to Everton meant 3 players were safely through to the next round. Liverpool's return to winning ways when they defeated Arsenal 3-1 saw two players move on to the fourth round with one player progressing on the back of Southampton's exciting 4-3 win over Watford. At the time of going to print 58 players were safely through to round four, while 48 players had made their exit from the competition with 9 players waiting on Chelsea in their game with West Ham on Monday night to see if they could make it through to round four. There was three big name casualties in round three with past champions Jonathan Lewins, James Nolan junior and Hughie Nolan going out of the competition. Other past champions Anthony Earls and Jim Foley have made it through to round four as they look to become the first player to win the competition for a second time. Good luck to all remaining players. There is no Last Man Standing competition this week due to the FA cup and a reduced premiership programme.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th MARCH 2017

Our senior team recorded an excellent victory away to Parkvilla FC on Friday night. The lads made the long journey to Navan looking for a morale boosting result and that's exactly what they got, they claimed all three points against sixth placed Parkvilla winning 5-2. Riain Sweetman Burke impressed for the lads firing home an excellent hat-trick, Maurice Dunne hit his seventh of the season with Mark O'Sullivan nabbing his first of the season to complete the five goal haul and a welcomed three points. This result pulls the lads outside the relegation spots and with this league been so tight a couple of good wins can put the lads back in the promotion hunt. All in all it was a good team performance from the lads and hopefully it will give them something to build on.
The under 17’s started life in Major 1 of the DDSL, having competed in Major 2 prior to Christmas the lads began life in the higher grade with a disappointing 6-2 defeat away to Verona. What was even more disappointing was the lads were level at 2-2 with twenty minutes to go. Patrick O’Keane and Eli Graham nabbed the Rovers goals on the day.
The 15B's went down 5-1 at home to Arklow Town B in the only game on Saturday. The lads never really got going in this game, Nathan Sullivan scored the Rovers consolation goal to bring his tally for the lads to twelve this season.
Sunday’s action saw our 11A’s take a well earned point in a 2-2 draw away to Aughrim Rgrs, Charlie Czwalina fired home his nineteenth of the season to put the lads one up but they were pegged back with Aughrim going 2-1 ahead. The lads showed great character and fought back to level when Liam Burke notched his twelfth of the campaign. The 12B’s maintained their one hundred percent record in the league with an exciting 3-2 away win over Avonmore. Goals from Charlie Phelan and a seventh of the season from Ryan McConnell put them 2-0 up at the break, Avonmore stormed back in the second half to level matters but the lads showed their fighting spirit to hit back when Charlie Phelan claimed his tenth of the season to earn all three points. Our 13A’s earned all three points in a tough encounter away to Aughrim Rgrs, Jordan Younger scored his fourteenth of the season with Tom Hodgkinson firing in his eighth of the campaign to ensure the lads keep ahead of the chasing pack. The under 13B’s went down 6-1 away to Glencormac, Oran Dempsey fired home his fifth goal of the season. Well it was a long time coming but at long last our under 14C’s got their deserved rewards for their sterling efforts over the season, the C’s earned an excellent point when they held the B team to a 1-1 draw. Both the B and C team are competing in the premier grade. Kevin Leonard scored his first of the season for the C’s with Evan Dwyer notching his second of the campaign for the B’s. Our 15A’s recorded a fantastic 1-0 win over Aughrim Rgrs, every single Rovers player gave a hundred percent in achieving this result, Frankie Reynolds was the goal hero when he claimed his second of the season. The 16B’s were unlucky when they went down 2-1 away to Greystones Utd, they at least should have gained a point as they had two efforts cleared off the line and also struck the woodwork. Nathan Sullivan scored their goal in what was a good all round team performance.
The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday 18th April to Friday 21st April. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm daily in the Whitegates. The cost of the camp is €45, a ball will be given to all participants at the start of the camp and a medal will be presented on the final day. Our Last Man Standing competition resumes this coming weekend the 18th of March, as it stands we have 67 players left standing. We would like to wish all remaining players the very best of luck in the remainder of the competition. Remember all selections must be in by 7 pm on Thursday night and you can’t select a team you have previously selected. Also a big thanks to everyone who supported our competition.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th MARCH 2017

The senior men went down narrowly away to Corduff losing 1-0 in a very tight affair. To be honest the lads will feel they left this one behind. The home side went in front from the penalty spot after five minutes and from that point on it was the lads who created numerous good openings but failed to take them. The lads definitely should have got something from the game.
The under 17’s recorded an excellent 2-1 home win over Aungier Celtic. Stuart Cox calmly slotted past the advancing keeper. The away side hit back straight away going up the other end from the restart to level matters. Rovers took control of the game in the second period creating several good chances. From one of those chances Stuart Cox nabbed his second of the game and what proved to be the winner when he lobbed the onrushing keeper. The Rovers defence remained rock solid to shut out the opposition to secure three points against last seasons major 2 champions. Adam Cuddihy stood out for Rovers on the day.
In midweek action our under 12A’s recorded an excellent 3-2 home win over local rivals Rathnew under lights at the Whitegates. In an exciting local derby the lads secured three important points with Sam Greene, Kai Fitzsimons and Oscar Malcolmson hitting their goals.
Saturday's action saw our 11A's record an excellent 2-0 away win over St Anthonys to put them in the semi final of the under 12 premier cup. Brian McCaul gave them the lead with top scorer Charlie Czwalina scoring the insurance goal just before the break in what was a fantastic all round team performance. The 12A’s stormed into the semi final of the premier cup also when they fired eight goals past Carnew without reply. Louis Malcolmson led the way with a fantastic hat-trick, Kai Fitzsimons and Jack Noble nabbed a brace a piece with Nicholas McAllister completing the eight goal haul in a clinical display from the team. Our under 14B's are going through a bad patch at the moment, this time they went down 4-0 away to Roundwood. The lads are just not firing on all cylinders of late and are not reaching the standards they have set for themselves. With a premier shield final approaching in the coming weeks the lads will be hoping to return to their early season form. Our 15B's made their exit from the division one cup when they went down 5-0 to a strong Wolfe Tone side. The lads never really got going in this game.
Sunday’s action saw the under 13A’s keep their assault on all fronts maintained when they saw off Wolfe Tone on a 2-1 scoreline. Willoughby Woods and Jordan Younger netted for the lads as they kept their treble dreams alive. The 13B’s were involved in a seven goal thriller away to Ashford Rovers losing 4-3, Zach Harris, Oran Dempsey and Tim Farrelly hit the lads goals in what was a great advert for football. Our under 15A’s and 16B’s come into direct opposition in the under 15/16 challenge cup. After a tight encounter the 15A’s ran out 2-1 winners. Tom O’Shea and Chris Mabuza scored the 15A’s goals with Nacho Garcia hitting the net for the 16B’s in what was an evenly contested inter club derby.
Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round 5 which will take place on the weekend of Saturday the 1 st of April. There is no LMS competition next weekend due to the international break. Everton’s 4-0 win over Hull saw 46 players book their place in round 5 with Chelsea’s 2-1 win away to Stoke helping 6 players safely through. Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Southampton means 4 more players progress, Man Utd defeated Middlesbrough to send three players through with Crystal Palace and Leicester providing two and one players respectively with a safe spot in round five. Of the players that exited the competition 4 went out after Arsenal lost 3-1 to West Brom and one player made his exit after Sunderland could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Burnley. Fixtures for round 5 will be sent out next Sunday/Monday the 26th/27th of March. We now have 62 players left standing in the battle for the €500 prize. Good luck to all remaining players and once again thanks to everyone who supported our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.
The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday 18th April to Friday 21st April. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm daily in the Whitegates. The cost of the camp is €45, a ball will be given to all participants at the start of the camp and a medal will be presented on the final day. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th MARCH 2017

The senior men went down 2-1 away to Mid Sutton Sportslink, the lads were short of players for one reason or another on the day and great credit has to be given to the players on duty in this game as they gave it one hundred percent. Riain Sweetman Burke nabbed his fifth goal since coming into the side recently.
The under 17’s went down 4-0 at home to Greystones Utd and to say it was a bad day at the office was an under statement as the lads never really got going in this game.
On Thursday night the under 13A’s maintained their assault on all three local competitions when they defeated local neighbours Rathnew under the lights at the Whitegates. Top scorer Jordan Younger nabbed his sixteenth of the season, Callum Gibney made it twelve for the season and Sean O’Meara scored his eleventh in all competitions to send the lads into the semi final with an excellent 3-0 win.
Saturday’s junior action saw the 12B’s continue their excellent run when they made it eight wins on the bounce after defeating last seasons league champions Greystones Utd 2-0 at the Whitegates. Robbie Dover’s charges were excellent and are really on a fantastic run at present. Charlie Phelan fired home his eleventh of the season with Mikey Nolan finding the net for the sixth time of the campaign in what was a great all round team performance. The 14B’s got back to winning ways with a good 2-0 victory over Greystones Utd, the first goal came in the shape of an own goal with a first of the season for Harry Broxsan ensuring all three points were secured for the lads. A very much under strength 15A’s travelled to take on Arklow Town and returned with all three points in a battling performance from every player on duty. Chris Mabuza headed home his third goal of the season to capture an excellent win for the lads.
Sundays action saw the under 13 girls good run come to an end when they went down 7-0 to unbeaten Maynooth Town, the girls gave it their all on the day with Rachel Cox standing out on her return to the team. The 14A’s suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Coolboy Rgrs in what was a closely fought encounter, Samuel Bishop scored his fourth of the season for the lads and were unlucky not to get something from the game. The 14C’s went down 3-1 to Arklow Celtic, the lads can consider themselves a little unlucky not to get something from the game, Adam Shepherd fired home his fourth of the season. Our 16B’s recorded an excellent 5-3 win away to Arklow Town in a thrilling game, Nathan Wynne notched a brace to make it fourteen for the season, Nacho Garcia moved onto eleven for the campaign when he also hit two with a first of the season for David McNabb completing the scoring.
The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday 18th April to Friday 21st April. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm daily in the Whitegates. The cost of the camp is €45, a ball will be given to all participants at the start of the camp and a medal will be presented on the final day. There is also a reduced rate for two or more kids from the same family. Registration forms can be picked up at the Saturday morning academy, from any committee member or alternatively you can download a form on the club website at

Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to thank all the kids from the under 8's, 9's, 10's, 11's and the senior ladies teams who came out in force to represent the club in the St Patricks Day parade. A big thanks goes to Robbie Dover, Mark Kennedy and the junior managers for organising everything. Also thanks to Mandy and the senior ladies who entertained the watching crowd with some of their football skills on the street. Thanks to all the parents who came along to keep an eye on the kids, your support was very much appreciated. Finally a massive thanks to Franny and Rosemary Copeland who bagged all the goodie bags and distributed them to the kids at the end of the parade. Once again thanks to everyone who got involved.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Ann Fennelly (Shankill) who sadly passed away recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with her daughters Jane and Diane, her brother Patrick, sons in law John and Cormac, her grandchildren Jack, Dylan, Ava, Cian, Sarah, Emma and her extended family and friends at this sad time. May she rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd APRIL 2017

The senior men went down to 2-0 at home to Parkvilla at the Whitegates last Friday night. The lads had a lot of possession in this game but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Both teams struggled to create a clear cut opening in the first period which resulted with the sides going in at the break scoreless. The Navan side went in front midway through the second half which was a lead they never relinquished. They actually added a second goal in injury time.
The under 17’s were under strength when they went down 5-4 away to Firhouse Carmel, Stephen Finlay slammed home two goals from penalty kicks with Stuart Cox and Jack Evans adding one a piece.
Saturdays junior action saw our under 11A’s take on Aughrim in their first leg of the under 12 premier cup semi final. In a tight encounter the sides go into the return leg next week tied at 1-1, Rovers went in front when Jack Macklin curled in his corner kick for his sixth goal of the season. The away side levelled matters in the closing stages of the game in what was a tight game with both defences giving very little away. In the other semi final at this age group our 12A’s take a narrow 1-0 lead into their second leg after they defeated local neighbours Wicklow Town in the Whitegates. This was another tight game with no quarter given and typical of a local derby. The all important goal came when Ross McCrea fired home a free kick for his third of the season and gives the lads a lead to defend next week. The under 15B’s went goal crazy firing ten past Greystones Utd without reply. Nathan Sullivan smashed home an incredible seven goals, the second game this season where he has hit seven. Thomas O’Neill, Michael Ryan and Sean Leonard all notched one a piece as the lads ran out comfortable 10-0 winners. Our 16A’s came out on top in a seven goal thriller with Greystones Utd winning 4-3 in the Rocky Road. Singles from Luke Whyte, Sean Leonard, Shane Lincoln and Nathan Sullivan ensured all three points stayed in Wicklow. The 16B’s recorded an excellent 3-2 premier cup quarter final win over Ashford Rovs, Nacho Garcia hit a brace to bring his tally to thirteen for the season with Javier Rodriguez nabbing a single to bring his total for the campaign to twelve and book the lads place in the semi final.
On Sunday the 12B’s were in clinical form when they defeated Greystones 5-0 in the first leg of their cup semi final at the Whitegates. This leaves the lads with one foot in the final, Charlie Phelan netted twice to move onto thirteen in the scoring charts while Ian Kavanagh, Ryan McConnell and Peter Dunne all added singles in a fantastic all round team performance. The under 13 girls went down narrowly to unbeaten Enniskerry losing 1-0, in what was a great advert for girls football this was a game that the girls could have and probably should have got something from. They put in a great shift with every player impressing. Our 13A’s unbeaten run in local competition still continues when they drew 1-1 away to Carnew in the first leg of their premier cup semi final. Jordan Younger fired home his seventeenth goal of the season to leave this tie finely poised for the return leg in Wicklow next weekend. The 13B’s recorded an excellent 6-0 win over Arklow Town, they had six different goalscorers on the day with Zach Callery, Tim Hastie, Ruadhrai Kelly, Zach Harris, Luke Dunne and Rory Hannon all hitting the back of the net. The 14C’s went down to an 8-1 defeat away to Greystones in the first leg of their premier cup semi final, Adam Shepherd scored their consolation goal against a strong Greystones outfit. The 15A’s went down 5-1 to local rivals Wicklow Town in their cup semi final, the lads never got going in this game. Tom O’Shea nabbed their goal.
After round 5 of our Last Man Standing competition we are now left with 9 players to battle it out for the title. Chelsea’s defeat to Crystal Palace saw 34 players make their exit, 11 players went out on Southampton, 3 went out on Man Utd with 2 going out with both West Ham and Swansea which meant we lost 52 players in round five. At the time of going to print selections for round 6 will have been confirmed and posted on our club website as round 6 is a midweek programme.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th APRIL 2017

Midweek action in the junior section saw the under 13 girls go down 3-1 away to Dalkey Utd on Tuesday. The girls put on a great show in defeat against a team who just recently dropped down from a higher grade. Abi Farrell hit the Rovers goal on the night. Elsewhere on Tuesday the 12A’s recorded a fine 3-1 win away to previously unbeaten St Anthonys in the league, two goals from Louis Malcolmson and a single from Ross McCrea earned them three valuable points. The same night the 11A’s took all three points from Rathnew under 12’s in an excellent 2-1 away win, leading scorer Charlie Czwalina hit the first with Brian McCaul firing home the all important second. The 14A’s went down narrowly on a 2-1 score line to Coolboy Rgrs in the first leg of their under 15 premier cup semi final, Ross Quinn nabbed the crucial goal for Rovers. On Thursday night the 15A’s were unlucky to go down 4-2 to Ashford Rovers in the combined under 15/16 challenge cup, Paul Marah and Joe O’Shea fired home the goals in a game the lads controlled for large periods. On the same night the 16B’s produced an excellent result when they beat Aughrim Rgrs 4-0, Joe Geraghty, Nathan Wynne, Luke Durac McGowan and Joe O’Shea all hit singles in an impressive victory.
On Saturday the under 11A’s were unlucky to go out of the under 12 premier cup at the semi final stage when they lost 2-1 away to Aughrim losing 3-2 on aggregate. Brian McCaul nabbed their goal in a game where with a bit of luck the result could have been different. The 12A’s did however progress to the final of the same competition when they saw off local neighbours Wicklow Town winning their second leg 3-0 to win 4-0 on aggregate. Sam Greene fired home a brace and Louis Malcolmson added a single as the lads moved smoothly into the final in what was a good all round team performance. Our 12B’s were another team who progressed to their respective final when they duly disposed of Greystones Utd winning 2-0 at the Woodlands to go through 7-0 on aggregate. Ryan McConnell scored his ninth of the season with Ian Kavanagh popping up with his second of the campaign to see the lads comfortably through to the division 2 final.
On Sunday the under 13A’s progressed to the premier cup final and kept their hopes of a domestic treble alive, they defeated Carnew 2-0 at the Whitegates to progress 3-1 on aggregate. The lads got off to a flyer when they went one up inside three minutes when Sean O’Meara fired home number twelve for the season. Top scorer Jordan Younger made it eighteen for the campaign when he added the insurance goal to give the lads a safe passage through to the final. Our 14A’s were unlucky to go out of the under 15 premier cup when they drew 1-1 with Coolboy Rgrs, losing narrowly 3-2 on aggregate. The lads gave it their all in Coolboy as they tried to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg. It was a tight encounter between two evenly matched sides. On the day it just wasn’t to be, Eoin Doyle slotted in the Rovers goal to bring his tally for the season to thirteen. The 15A’s had only nine players for the second leg of their cup semi final against local neighbours Wicklow Town, already facing an uphill task having only nine players didn’t help their cause. The Town ran out easy winners but to the lads credit they battled right to the end. Even in a heavy defeat the lads did manage to score a couple themselves with Paul Marah and Joe O’Shea netting for the lads. The 16B’s were missing three regulars when they travelled to Rathdrum to take on Avonmore in their premier cup semi final first leg, on the day the lads never did themselves justice as they never really got going in the game finding themselves 5-0 down at the break. Avonmore added a further three goals after the break to run out 8-0 winners.
Registration forms can be picked up at the Saturday morning academy, from any committee member or alternatively you can download a form on the club website at
www.wicklowrovers.com. Check out club facebook page and club website for more details.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th APRIL 2017

The senior ladies kicked off their season in style with a 5-0 home win over Terenure last week. Natasha Fitzgerald put them in front after thirteen minutes. On the half hour Niamh O’Brien made it 2-0 with Natasha Fitgerald adding a second and Rovers third before the break. The girls continued their dominance in the second half with Niamh O’Brien adding her second and Natasha Fitzgerald completing her hat-trick to round off a clinical display from the Rovers twin strike force to give them their 5-0 win. It was an impressive all round team performance from the girls but a special mention goes to Valentine Lenoir and Rachel Bolger who put in a great shift in the engine room of the team.
The senior men went down to a disappointing 5-0 defeat to CIE Ranch last Friday night, to say it was a poor performance is an understatement as the lads never really produced any threat to the visiting team. The away keeper was never troubled through out the ninety minutes something the lads are going to have to improve on.
With no junior games at the weekend due to the Easter break we were curtailed to midweek action, on Tuesday our 11A’s and 12A’s came into direct opposition with each other in the under 12 premier league. It was a very entertaining game with both sides producing some excellent football. The 12’s ran out 3-0 winners at the final whistle with Kai Fitzsimons hitting a brace and Sam Greene netting a single. On the same night the 12B’s cemented their place at the top of their league when they defeated second place St Patricks 2-0 in their own backyard. The lads were short of a couple of regulars but that didn’t stop them winning their eighth league game in a row and their tenth on the bounce. Ryan McConnell and Charlie Phelan hit their goals on the night to put them in a very strong position. The 16B’s went down 3-0 to Avonmore in the second leg of their cup semi final to lose out 11-1 on aggregate. In truth this was a much improved performance from the first leg as the lads were unlucky on the night not to get a couple of goals themselves as they battled well through out. On Wednesday the 13B’s went down 5-1 to a strong Roundwood side, the lads never really got going in this game with the away side been the more clinical in front of goal. Sam Christie nabbed their consolation goal on the night. The 16A’s went down to a disappointing 8-1 defeat at home to Greystones in the first leg of their cup semi final. In a game where the team never really got going and probably turned in their most disappointing performance of the season Nathan Sullivan snatched a consolation goal but the lads now have a mountain to climb in the second leg. The remaining game in midweek was our under 15A’s as they took on Coolboy Rangers, the lads lost 2-1 in what was a closely fought encounter. It was a game that could have went either way but it wasn’t to be and if there’s one team who need a little luck at the moment it is this little team. Under 14 player Scott Bushe made the step up and was rewarded with a goal.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 23rd APRIL 2017

The senior team had an excellent win last Tuesday night when they defeated promotion chasing Mid Sutton Sportslink 4-2 at the Whitegates. In probably what was one of their best performances of the season the lads went in front on seven minutes through Luke Byrne. The away side came roaring back to go 2-1 in front but to the lads credit they never gave up. Mark Delaney squared matters when he climbed highest to head home. Luke Byrne fired the lads in front with seven minutes left on the clock and then completed his hat-trick in the dying seconds to secure all three points. In what was an excellent all round team performance Davy Rowan, Brian Byrne, Mark Delaney, Rikki Quinn and of course hat-trick hero Luke Byrne all come in for a special mention. Unfortunately the lads went down 2-1 away to Ratoath Harps on Friday night, Mark O’Sullivan scored their goal, no other details at the time of going to print.
The only midweek action in the junior section saw our 16A’s draw 3-3 with Greystones Utd in their second leg of their premier cup semi final on Thursday night. Unfortunately for the lads they exited the competition 11-4 on aggregate. Sean Leonard, Owen Sreenan and Nathan Sullivan fired home their goals on the night.
What a day we had on Saturday, firstly the under 16B’s received a walkover during the week as Little Bray Utd had withdrew from the league therefore the 16B’s received a walkover in the division 1 shield final, not the way they wanted to win it but it was out of their control. On the playing field we had three teams in shield final action on Saturday. The under 11A’s were first up and they didn’t disappoint as they defeated Wolfe Tone in the under 12 Premier Group 4 shield final winning 3-1. The lads were slow into their stride and found themselves 1-0 down early on. When they did get their flowing football going they tore apart the Wolfe Tone defence firing home three goals without reply. Brian McCaul started the scoring when he nabbed his eleventh of the season, Daniel Kavanagh was sprung from the bench and he fired the lads in front with his third of the campaign. The icing was put on the cake late on when Liam Burke brought his tally to thirteen when he fired in the third. Congratulations to Ian, Dixie, Gary and the team on their success. The 12A’s captured the Premier Group 1 shield in an exciting nail biting final against Aughrim. Nothing separated the two sides at full time with the teams all square at 1-1, top scorer Kai Fitzsimons was the Rovers goalscorer with his fourteenth of the season. It was on to extra time and Rovers did have the chances to seal the game but they didn’t take them and it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout. Kai Fitzsimons, Ross McCrea and Jack Noble were all successful with their spot kicks and Nicholas McAllister proved to be the hero when he saved one of the Aughrim penalities to take the shield back to the Whitegates. Well done to Keith, Stephen and the team on a fantastic win. Then the under 14A’s who like our 11A’s are playing a year up from their natural age group took on Arklow Town in the under 15 division 1 shield final. They fell behind early in play but to their credit they didn’t drop their heads. They slowly played their way into the game and had several chances to draw level. Just when it seemed like it wasn’t going to be their day they levelled matters in the last minute when Connor Lewins fired home and sent the game to extra time. In extra time the lads proved the stronger and a Ross Quinn goal secured a well deserved victory. Well done to Jerry and his team on a great win. In league action our 15B’s played a thrilling 3-3 draw with Newtown Juniors, Nathan Sullivan, Michael Ryan and Aidan Hennessey were the goalscorers in a thrilling encounter.
On Sunday the under 13A’s won the under 13 premier shield final when they defeated Newtown Juniors 2-1, in a closely fought game the lads scored the decisive goal with the last kick of the game. Sean O’Meara put them ahead but they were pegged back when Newtown scored with ten minutes left but then Jordan Younger popped up with the winner in the last minute. Well done to Paul, Tommy and the team. Hard luck to our 14B’s who went down 4-3 to Roundwood in the premier shield final losing 4-3, Scott Bushe helped himself to a brace to bring his tally to eleven with Harry Broxsan notching his second of the campaign in a game that could have went either way, well done to Rob, Colm and the team on making the final. Our under 16A’s went down 2-0 to Avonmore in their premier shield final, nothing went the lads way on the day and now they will have to make a big shove for the league title. Well done to John, Matt and the lads on making the final. In league action the 16B’s defeated Ashford 2-1 with Nathan Wynne bring his total to seventeen for the season with he scored both goals.
Our Easter Camp was a major success with over 90 kids participating, we would like to thank all the kids for taking part, they all had a great time and we were blessed with the good weather, a big thanks to all the parents who brought their kids along. Your continuous support of our camps is very much appreciated. Finally a massive thanks to all the coaches, who were on duty over the course of the week, well done to everyone.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 30th APRIL 2017

The senior men went down 3-1 away to Manortown Utd, Sean Tobin nodded home their lone goal. The under 17’s went down 3-1 to league leaders Verona, the lads went 1-0 through a Patrick O’Keane goal but the Dublin side came back with three unanswered goals to run out 3-1 winners.
Our senior ladies claimed a good point away to Mourne Celtic, the girls went in front when Niamh O’Brien gave them the lead but the home side levelled before the break. The girls fell behind early in the second half but to their credit they battled back with Natasha Fitzgerald firing home from the penalty spot. The girls did have several clear cut chances to win the game but it wasn’t to be on the night. Valentine Lenoir, Saoirse O’Reilly, Rachel Bolger and Nicole Hubbard stood out for Rovers on the night.
Midweek junior action saw the under 11A’s going down 3-1 away to St Anthonys under 12’s, the lads can count themselves a little unlucky in this game conceding two late goals, Brian McCaul was the Rovers goalscorer on the night. The 12A’s tightened their grip on the premier league when they defeated their nearest challengers Aughrim 3-0 in their own backyard. Louis Malcolmson, Sam Greene and Jack Noble netted for the lads in a very impressive win. The under 13 girls went down to a 2-0 defeat away to Enniskerry, the girls were more than a match for unbeaten Enniskerry with the second goal coming late on in the game. The girls put in an excellent shift and received positive compliments from the opposition. The 13A’s are another team in the club who have their sights set on a treble and after claiming the premier shield last week they recorded a resounding away win over St Anthonys on Wednesday night, a brace from Conor Hunter and singles from Tiernan O’Brien, Tomas Kennedy, Jordan Younger and Callum Gibney scored the Rovers goals in a good 6-0 win to keep them very much in the mix for the title. The 15A’s beat Aughrim’s under 16’s 7-1 in the challenge cup, Paul Marah fired home two with Scott Bushe, Joe O’Shea, Deano Doran, Frankie Reynolds and Rory O’Brien scoring one a piece in a good all round team performance, a highlight of the game was an excellent penalty save from Rovers keeper Liam Connolly.
Saturday’s junior action saw the 16A’s keep their dream of the premier title alive with an excellent 7-2 away win over near neighbours Ashford Rovers. Nathan Sullivan hit a splendid hat-trick with Sean Farrell, Sean Leonard, Shane Lincoln and Dylan Frazer all hitting singles to keep the lads very much in the mix.
On Sunday it was off to Greystones for WDSL cup finals day. First up was the 12B’s as they took on local rivals Rathnew, after falling 1-0 behind against the run of play the lads came roaring back to level matters when Ryan McConnell bravely won the race to a 50/50 ball to find the net. The second half couldn’t separate the teams and it was on to extra time, with time running out Cian Leonard popped up with the all important winner to give the lads a well deserved victory. Up next was the 13A’s and they added the premier cup to their premier shield to make it two from two as they defeated a spirited Newtown side 3-1. Willoughby Woods, Jordan Younger and Sean O’Meara hit the Rovers goal and they will be hoping to go on now and claim the premier league title and complete the treble. Another team who will be seeking to claim a treble is our 12A’s, they added the premier cup to the premier shield when they defeated Aughrim 3-0, goals from Kai Fitzsimons, Louis Malcolmson and Oscar Malcolmson now means they have two in the bag as they go in search of the league title over the next couple of weeks. Congratulations to all three teams on their success. Our under 13 girls defeated Cambridge 2-1 with goals from Molly Sweeney and Aoife Caffrey. The under 15A’s went down 5-1 away to St Anthonys under 16’s, the lads never really got going in this game. Deano Doran nabbed his second goal of the season and his second in as many games.
Well our Last Man Standing competition came to an end at the weekend, senior manager Greg Dunne claimed the title of Last Man Standing champion and more importantly the €500 prize. His selection Chelsea easily saw off Everton winning 3-0 while the other three players exited the competition when two players picked Crystal Palace and they went down 2-0 to Burnley. Past winner Anthony Earls went out when his selection Southampton could only manage a scoreless draw. A big congratulations to Greg on his win, also we would like to thank everyone who took part in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th MAY 2017

The senior men had two games last week, on Tuesday they went down 2-1 at home to CYM Beechwood. They were two down at half time, midway through the second half they pulled one back through Sean Tobin but that's as good as it got. On Friday they travelled to take on league leaders Mullingar Athletic in the second round of the Lumney O’Reilly cup, the lads were 2-0 up on the hour mark through two excellent strikes from Maurice Dunne when the floodlights failed. This is typical of the luck that’s going the lads way recently, all bad luck. The decision of what happens next is with the league’s executive committee.
The senior ladies recorded an excellent 5-1 away win over Donnycarney, the girls got off to the perfect start when Hannah Cox fired them in front after five minutes. They were 2-0 up when Niamh O’Brien scored after fifteen minutes and shortly afterwards Charmaine Higgins made it 3-0 and the girls were well on their way to the three points. Further goals from Niamh O’Brien and Rachel ‘’The Goal Machine’’ Bolger accounted for the girls five goal haul to make it two wins and a draw from their first three games. On the night Kellie Ryder and Laura O’Brien impressed for Rovers.
The under 17’s lost 2-1 away to Palmerstown FC in a tight encounter. In a game that could have went either way Stephen Finlay hit his tenth goal of the season for Rovers bit with a bit of luck they might have got something from the game.
Midweek junior action saw the 12A's claim three points in their quest for the treble when they beat Aughrim 2-0 with goals from Steven Gormley and Louis Malcomson to keep them firmly in the title hunt. The 13A's are another team chasing a treble, they had two games during the week. First they narrowly saw off Carnew winning 1-0 with top scorer Jordan Younger nabbing the crucial goal. Then they defeated Wolfe Tone 4-0 with Mark Hodgkinson scoring two and Conor Hunter and Jordan Younger nabbing one each to put them in the driving seat in the table. The 16A's recorded a comfortable 6-0 away win over St Anthonys, Nathan Sullivan helped himself to a hat-trick, Sean Leonard claimed a brace with Luke Whyte completing the scoring. Our 16B's drew away to Avonmore in an eight goal thriller. The lads raced into a 4-1 lead with two goals from Ryan Murphy and singles from Tom O'Shea and Nathan Wynne only to be pegged back with the game ending 4-4. The 16B's followed this up with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Roundwood, Nathan Wynne, David McNabb, Tom O'Shea, Craig Anderson and Joe Geraghty all hit the back of the net to give the lads the points in this nine goal thriller.
The weekend saw our under 13 girls record a fine 5-1 win over Mount Merrion, it was 1-1 at the break with Abi Farrell firing in a thunderbolt of a goal. In the second half it was all Rovers with Molly Sweeney producing an excellent solo scoring feat firing home four second half goals to give Rovers a 5-1 win in what was a good all round team performance. The 11A’s made the short journey to Finlay Park to take on local rivals Wicklow Town, after a tough game the lads claimed all three points when Charlie Czwalina fired home his twenty second competitive goal of the season. The 12B’s quest for the league title to add to their recent cup success received another boost when they made it ten wins from as many games when they beat Aughrim 3-0 at Whitegates. Harry Tobin Kelly, Ben Bowen and Mikey Nolan were the goalscorers as the lads edge closer to the double. The 13A’s made it three wins from three this week with a 6-0 away win over Avonmore to keep their dreams of a treble very much in their own hands. Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Kevin Hosey who sadly passed away recently, Kevin’s son Daragh was a past member of the club. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 14th MAY 2017

Our senior men lost 2-1 at home to Drogheda Town, after taking an early lead through a Mark O’Sullivan goal the lads rued several missed chances when the away team stormed back with two goals of their own to claim all three points. The lads put in a good performance and with some better finishing in front of goal the lads could have won this game comfortably.
The senior ladies claimed an excellent 3-2 win over cup favourites Shankill FC last Monday night at Whitegates. The girls were slow into their stride with the away side having the majority of the early possession. But it was Rovers who went in front when Rachel Bolger found Niamh O’Brien and she finished past the advancing keeper. Shankill drew level just before the break, but Rovers retook the lead five minutes into the second half when yet again Rachel Bolger found Niamh O’Brien and she powerfully finished to the bottom left hand corner of the net. O’Brien netted her hat-trick soon after when she latched onto a Natasha Fitzgerald pass and tucked the ball neatly past the keeper. Even though they lost 2-1 against neighbours Wicklow Town in Finlay Park their club mates the 11A’s were doing them a favour on the other side of the fence at Whitegates when they held the A’s nearest challengers St Anthonys to a 1-1 draw. This result meant St Anthonys couldn’t catch the A’s meaning the title was coming to Whitegates. On the night Ross McCrea netted for the 12A’s. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 18th JUNE 2017

The senior ladies suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down 5-3 away to C.M.H. FC in Dundrum. The girls never really got going in this game and never reached the high standards they have set themselves. They fell behind early on but hit back within a minute when Niamh O’Brien scored a cracker. Two goals in as many minutes just before the break put the home side in the driving seat. The girls pulled one back in the first minute of the second half through Hannah Cox but they then conceded a soft goal to fall 4-2 behind. They reduced the deficit again when Laura O’Brien blasted home to make it 4-3 but any hope of completing the comeback was dashed when the home side scored a fifth to run out 5-3 winners. On the night Louise Johnson and Kellie Ryder were the stand out players for Rovers.
The under 17’s went down 4-2 to Firhouse Carmel, the lads were under strength but gave a good account of themselves none the less. Luca Rampersaud hit his fifteenth goal of the season with Sean Leonard nabbing his first.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th JUNE 2017

The senior ladies gained a good point when they drew with Mourne Celtic 1-1 in the Rocky Road, Mourne came to Wicklow boasting a one hundred percent record and with the girls missing a couple of key players it was always going to be tough. They found themselves 1-0 down at the break but to their credit they battled back in the second half and levelled matters when Niamh O’Brien got on the end of a Rachel Bolger through ball to slot home. A draw was probably just about a fair result with both sides having a couple of chances to claim all three points. On the night Louise Johnson was outstanding for Rovers and was ably assisted by Kellie Ryder.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd JULY 2017

Our senior ladies team took on C.M.H. FC in the first round of the DWSL Junior Cup and after losing 5-3 to the same opponents two weeks a go the girls were looking to turn the tables this time around. That they did and in a ruthless fashion blasting the Dundrum outfit out of the cup on a 10-3 scoreline. Niamh O’Brien led the way with a clinical display in front of goal with an individual haul of five goals. Rachel Bolger and Natasha Fitzgerald weighed in with a brace a piece with Deirbhle Geraghty adding a single to complete the ten goal tally. Every player on the pitch played their part in an all round good team performance. A special mention goes to Nicole Hubbard who was outstanding on the night to claim the girl of the match accolade, Nicole was excellent through out, tenacious in the tackle, supported her midfield and the attack, an overall excellent performance.
The under 17’s lost out in an eleven goal thriller against Sacred Heart losing 6-5. The lads took awhile to get going in the game but it was a match they were always chasing. Every time they closed the gap they conceded a soft goal and then in the last minute they had a great chance to level but it wasn’t to be. They definitely kept the watching public entertained. The goalscorers on the day were Eli Graham, Dean Noble, Luca Rampersaud, Jack Manley and Stephen Finlay.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 6th AUGUST 2017

The senior men kicked off their pre-season with an excellent 6-0 home win over Cabinteely, Gareth Murphy fired home a fantastic hat-trick with Shane Cassidy, Maurice Dunne and an own goal accounting for the remaining goals. Shane Doyle in the Rovers goal made an excellent save from a penalty in what was a good all round team performance.
The senior ladies saw their title hopes disappear when they suffered two defeats last week. First they lost 8-5 at home to C.M.H. FC at Whitegates. In a game which the girls were down five regulars, this was a game they were always chasing. Three points were required to keep them in the title race but on the night it wasn’t to be. Top scorer Niamh O’Brien and Rachel Bolger nabbed two a piece with Ciara Dease adding a single on her debut in what was a battling performance. In their second game of the week the girls suffered a heavy 7-1 home defeat at the hands of Donnycarney. This was a game where the girls never really got into it and found a well drilled Donnycarney side clinical in front of goal to record a comfortable victory.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 13th AUGUST 2017

Our senior men continued their pre-season warm up with a 3-3 draw with Shamrock Rovers [Wexford], the lads came out of the traps flying and raced in to a 2-0 lead. Gareth Murphy hit a cracker from distance to put the lads 1-0 up before leaving the field early with an ankle injury. Alan Delaney popped up with the second shortly after, at this stage the lads were playing some nice tidy football. It could have been three but the Shamrock keeper saved a Wicklow penalty. The visitors hit back though with two goals of their own before the break to level matters. The second half was a very even affair, the Wexford side hit the front for the first time when they scored their third but the lads showed great character to battle back with an equaliser in the dying seconds from Mark Sullivan. This was a good all round team display from the lads and a great workout against a formidable side. The lads continued their good form in pre-season friendlies when they held Gorey Rangers to a scoreless draw in Gorey, this was another good work out against a side who finished third in the Wexford premier league last season only losing three games out of twenty. It was a closely fought game with neither side giving anything away. Another tough friendly for the lads, which will stand them in good stead for the start of the new season.
The senior ladies finished off their league campaign with a disappointing 4-1 defeat to bottom of the table Castletown Belles in Dundalk. The girls will now go into the group stages of the Subsidiary cup hoping to get their early season form back to put themselves into contention.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 27th AUGUST 2017

Our senior men got their season off to the perfect start last Friday night at Whitegates when they defeated Yellowstone Celtic 3-2. The lads fell a goal behind after four minutes but showed great character to battle back to level through Maurice Dunne. Sean Tobin added a second to send Rovers in 2-1 up at the break. After sixty seven minutes Rovers deservingly increased their lead when Mikey Delaney cut in from the left before unleashing a sweet strike into the bottom right hand corner of the net to make it 3-1. The visitors pulled one back with six minutes remaining to make it a tense finish but the lads saw out the game to claim a well deserved three points and a winning start to the season. This was an excellent all round team performance and if the lads can produce this form on a consistent basis they should be well in the hunt for honours this season. Once again thanks to our match sponsors Alan and Liz Hegarty of The Lighthouse Restaurant, your kind sponsorship was very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 3rd SEPTEMBER 2017

The senior men suffered two disappointing defeats last week, first they lost 2-1 away to Rathsallagh Shankill. Tied at 1-1 the home side won the game with a bizarre own goal. The lads had numerous chances in this game and controlled the match for long periods. Maurice Dunne nabbed the Rovers goal. On Friday night it was the same story, trailing 1-0 at the break to Larkview Boys the lads came storming back in the second half to draw level when Mark O'Sullivan headed home. The lads had the better of the second half creating some good chances. Unfortunately they didn't take their chances and it came back to haunt them when the away side snatched a winner against the run of play. Ian Brannigan, Rikki Quinn, Mark Delaney and Peter Finnegan stood out for Rovers on the night.
The senior ladies gained the win they required to progress to the semi final of the Subsidiary Cup when they beat Mourne Celtic 3-1. Niamh O'Brien fired home two goals with Louise Johnson nabbing her first of the season in what was a good all round team performance.
Our under 17’s went down 3-2 away to Greystones Utd, the lads threw away a two goal lead after goals from Luca Rampersaud and Stephen Finlay gave them a flying start. The lads just didn’t play to the standards they’ve set themselves in the second half of this game.
The junior section of the club started at the weekend, on Saturday the 12A's got off to a flyer when they defeated St Anthonys away 4-2, Lee Brown, Josh Bishop, Jack Macklin and Liam Burke all registered a goal a piece to get the lads off to a positive start. The 12B's were another team who got off to a great start when they beat St Patricks 7-3. Ben Lyons claimed an excellent five goals with Evan Conyard adding a brace to give them a winning start to competitive football. The 11A’s playing a year above their natural age group were another team to get off to a good start when they travelled to Newtown and came back with three points in a fine 3-1 win, Sonny McHale scored two goals with Steven Kavanagh adding a single in a good all round team performance. Our 13A’s continued where they left off from last season when they recorded a good 5-0 away win over Carnew. Oscar Malcolmson notched a brace  with Stephen Gormley, Kai Fitzsimons and Sam Christie all adding singles. The 15B’s were involved in a ten goal thriller away to Arklow Town. Unfortunately for the lads they went down 6-4, Adam Shepherd scored two goals with Evan Dwyer and Keevan Doyle adding one each in what was a good team performance.
Sunday’s action saw our 14B’s go down 5-2 away to St Anthonys A, Tim Hastie and Ruadhrai Kelly were the Rovers marksmen on the day. The under 15A’s got their season up and running with a comfortable 5-0 win over local neighbours Wicklow Town at Whitegates. Conor Leonard plundered a brace with Stephen Kearns, Noah Sheridan and Dylan Cummins all adding singles in what was a clinical performance from the lads. If it was goals you were looking for Shamrock Park in Rathnew was the place to be, our under 16’s were involved in a goal fest which yielded fourteen goals. In what was an excellent advert for football both sides could take a lot of plaudits from the match. Rathnew eventually won the game 8-6 but this was a game were both sides were winners as they entertained the watching supporters from start to finish. Well done to both sides.

The lads showed great character and regained the lead with another first of the season, this time it was Peter Finnegan and it was 2-1 to Wicklow. The lads put the icing on the cake when Maurice Dunne netted his third of the season when he converted from the penalty spot. This was a great result for the lads, to come home after a long journey with all three points is a great feeling and makes the journey worth while.

The girls dominated from the start as they clinically beat the away side. Stephen Gormley led the way with a fantastic hat-trick, brothers Louis and Oscar Malcolmson notched a brace each with Sam Christie and Jack Noble adding singles in what was an excellent all round team performance. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th SEPT 2017

Our senior men went down to a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Blessington FC last week, the lads never really reached the standards they are capable of in this game. They went in at the break very much still in the game with the game scoreless at half time. Disaster struck when the away side went in front three minutes into the second period and it got worse when the lads were reduced to ten men, which left them with a mountain to climb. The away side added a further two goals with the third coming in injury time when the lads were pushing forward looking for a way back into the game. Generally it was a bad day at the office for the lads, on the night Ian Brannigan and Lenny Carton stood out for Rovers.
Our under 17 DDSL team had a resounding 6-1 away win over Knocklyon Utd, Dean Noble scored a brace to make it five for the season, leading scorer Luca Rampersaud moved onto eighteen for the campaign with a single. Stephen Finlay scored one to make it fifteen this season with Patrick O’Keane getting his seventh and Ronan Murray nabbing his second of the season to complete the scoring.
Our 17A’s got their WDL youth league off to a winning start when they claimed all three points away to Arklow Town winning 2-1, in what was a close competitive game the lads earned all three points with goals from Sean Farrell and Dylan Frazer.
Junior action was reduced within the club due to SFAI cup action, with the majority of our teams receiving byes to round two of the various SFAI cups they were all left twiddling their thumbs with no local action. The only side from under 12 to under 16 that were in action was our 14A’s as they entertained South Dublin side Beechwood FC at Whitegates and the lads joined their fellow club mates into round two with a resounding 3-0 victory, both Tom Hodgkinson and Callum Gibney hit one each to move to three goals each in the scoring charts with Sean O’Meara firing home his first of the campaign in a very solid performance from the lads. This win sets them up with a home tie against Kildare side Prosperous Utd in the second round.
On Sunday the under 14 girls kicked off their MGL season with a good 5-2 home victory over Cambridge from Ringsend. In a highly entertaining game there was nothing between the two sides in the first half with the teams going in at the break all square at 2-2 with Molly Sweeney twice hitting the back of the net to draw Rovers level on two occasions. In the second half Rovers dominated and pulled away with the prolific Molly Sweeney firing home two more goals to give her a personal haul of four goals, Kara Doyle completed the scoring when she nabbed the fifth goal on her debut. Eve Doyle in the centre of the Rovers midfield was girl of the match in what was a good all round team performance
Everyone at the club would like to wish our senior ladies the very best of luck in the Inter 3 Subsidiary cup final this Sunday the 24th of September when they take on Donnycarney in Inchicore home of St Patricks. The match kicks off at 4.30pm, all support welcomed.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 24th SEPT 2017

The senior men progressed to round two of the Leinster Junior cup when they had a comfortable 7-0 win over Kilkenny side Callan United on Sunday. The lads showed their intent from the first whistle creating several clear cut openings. They went in at the break 2-0 up with goals from Gareth Murphy and Mark O’Sullivan, the only surprising thing was the deficit wasn’t bigger. The second half was one way traffic with Rovers pushing home their superiority with a further five goals from Maurice Dunne, Alan Delaney, Mark Johnson, Luke Byrne and Peter Finnegan. The pleasing thing for the Rovers management was they had seven different goalscorers plus they kept a clean sheet. It was a clinical display from the lads and now they need to bring that form to their league games to climb up the table.
The under 17B team kicked off their season away to Ashford Rovers and lost 5-2, they faced an uphill task when they fell three behind in the first half. They did come out in the second period and put it up to the home side, they pulled one back when Luke Durac scored but the home restored their three goal margin with a fourth. Joseph O’Shea nabbed a second for the lads but it was the home side who finished off the scoring when they got their fifth.
On Friday night the 15B’s went down 7-2 away to Arklow Celtic, the lads gave it their all in the quest for their first points of the campaign but it wasn’t to be, Adam Shepherd and Keevan Doyle hit the back of the net for Rovers on the night.
Saturday junior action saw the under 12B’s continue their impressive start to the season when they made it three wins from three with a 7-0 win over Ashford Rovs, Ben Lyons made it nine goals in three games with his second hat-trick of the season, Evan Conyard moved onto five in the scoring charts with a brace while there were firsts of the season for Ben Harris and Peter Quinn. The 14C’s went down to a heavy defeat to a very strong Arklow Town A side but to their credit they never dropped their heads and battled right up till the final whistle.
Sunday’s junior action saw the 13B’s go down narrowly 2-1 away to Ashford, the teams were tied at 1-1 going into the dying minutes before the home side got the all important winner. Ryan McConnell scored the Wicklow goal. The 14B’s were involved in an eight goal thriller away to Glencormac, unfortunately for the lads they came out the wrong side of a 5-3 scoreline, the lads didn’t have much luck on the day. Alexander Gallet, Zach Harris and an own goal accounted for their goals. Our 15A’s have made it two wins from two games, nine goals scored and none conceded. They recorded an excellent 4-0 away win over Coolboy Rgrs, Josh Odlum got off the mark for the season in style when he netted a magnificent hat-trick with Connor Lewins also netting his first of the campaign with a single to record a very impressive victory. If it was excitement you were looking for Whitegates Sunday morning was the place to be. Our under 16’s and local neighbours Wicklow Town served up a feast of entertaining football in what was a great advert for the game. The match ended all square at 4-4 in a game that kept the watching supporters on the edge of their seats right till the final whistle. Nathan Sullivan fired in a brace, Tom O’Shea and Aidan Hennessy both notched one a piece. This was a humdinger of a local derby, both sets of players and their management teams done their clubs proud, well done to everyone involved.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish under 15B player Darren O’Brien a speedy recovery from a broken collar bone he sustained in their match away to Arklow Celtic, we all hope to see you back on the playing field soon, once again get well soon Darren.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st OCTOBER 2017

Our under 17 DDSL team recorded a good 2-1 win over Knocklyon Utd in what was a tough encounter, it was two well taken goals from David Ghiurcan early in the game that proved to be the all important scores to earn all three points.
The under 17A’s made it two wins from two when they beat Aughrim Rgrs 5-0, Dylan Frazer made it three in two games when he netted a double, Tom O’Shea also netted a brace for his first goals of the season with Miguel Moralejo scoring one. Our 17B’s recorded their first victory when they had an excellent 4-3 away win over Arklow Town. Nathan Wynne hammered home a fantastic hat-trick with Nicky Kearney notching the other to claim three excellent points.
In Saturday’s junior action the 12A’s went goal crazy when they fired ten past Coolboy Rgrs, Jack Macklin helped himself to four, Brian McCaul plundered three, Joshua Bishop nabbed a brace with Dan Kavanagh completing the ten goal haul for a 10-0 victory in what was an excellent team performance. The under 11’s playing at under 12 gained all three points in a 2-0 win over Arklow Utd, Senan O’Donovan and a second of the season from Conor Williams was enough to give them a fine victory and all three points. Our 12B’s remain unbeaten when they drew 1-1 with Roundwood who are also unbeaten and have a similar record to the lads. A sixth of the season for Evan Conyard proved to be the all important goal to earn a point and leave these two teams neck and neck at the top of the group. The 12C’s showed improvement in defeat when they lost 5-2 to Glencormac, with a bit of luck the result could have been even closer as the lads battled well through out. Luke Dunne and Cian Byrne scored their goals. Another team to go crazy were the 13A’s as they knocked an astonishing seventeen goals past Carnew in a 17-1 victory. Oscar Malcolmson netted a personal haul of five goals, Kai Fitzsimons followed closely with four goals with Sam Christie nabbing three. Stephen Gormley and Jack Noble both scored doubles with Louis Malcomson completing the rout with a single.
On Sunday the under 14 girls were unlucky to go out of the Molly O’Toole cup when they lost on penalties to last season’s league champions Maynooth Town. The match ended up a thrilling 3-3 draw after extra time and then went to the dreaded shoot out which Maynooth won 4-3. In the game itself Molly Sweeney found the net twice with Eve Kelly nabbing one in what was an entertaining tussle between two very good teams. The under 14B’s gained their first win of the season when they defeated St Anthonys 7-1, Alexander Gallet netted a brace with Ruaidhri Kelly, Javier Ramiro, Robert Cherry, Zak Christie and Tim Hastie all scoring one each. The 15A’s made it three wins from three, fifteen goals scored and none conceded when they saw off local neighbours Wicklow Town winning 6-0. Josh Odlum went one better than last week when he hit the back of the net four times, Conor Leonard and Connor Lewins added singles to give the lads a comfortable victory. Our 16’s lost 4-3 away to Roundwood, Nathan Sullivan made it eight goals in four games with a double with Tom O’Shea firing home the other.
The club’s Last Man Standing competition is back, the competition will start on the weekend of the 14th of October. Anyone interested in taking part in our competition should text their name and contact details to Charlie Mitchell at 086-3838362 or by email to

There will be no registration night this Friday the 6th of October due to the World cup qualifier between Rep of Ireland and Moldova.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Jimmy Dunne who sadly passed away recently, the Dunne family have been associated with our club from its formation to the present day, our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 8th OCTOBER 2017

The senior men recorded an excellent 2-1 away win over Kingscourt Harps in the second round of the Leinster Junior cup. They made the long journey home from Cavan much easier with this fantastic victory. Luke Byrne gave the lads a 1-0 half time lead, the home side levelled matters early in the second period but parity was short lived when Mark O’Sullivan restored the Rovers lead, a lead they never surrendered. It was a great result for the lads and now sees them progress to the third round where they’ll be hoping for a home draw. Well done to Greg, Denis, Dido and the lads.
Our under 17A’s drew 2-2 with Ashford Rovers, this was a tight encounter that could have went either way but a draw was probably a fair result, Luke Whyte and Conor Byrne hit the back of the net for the lads. The 17B’s went down 2-0 away to Arklow Utd, a goal in each half was enough to see the Arklow side take all three points.
Saturday’s junior action saw four of our sides in National cup action, first up was the 12A’s and they easily brushed aside a Portlaoise B team winning comfortably to set up a third round tie away to Edenderry Town A or Sallins Celtic B. Highlights of the game were first ever goals for the club from Harri Armstrong and he did it in style with his first hat-trick. Another player to nab an excellent hat-trick was goalkeeper Adam Doyle who came outfield to blast home three goals. The 13A’s never reached their normal high standards as they made their exit from the National cup when they went down 3-2 away to Caragh Celtic, the lads didn’t get going in this game but to their credit they battled through out, Oscar Malcolmson netted both goals for the lads.
Our 15A’s also went out when they lost 3-1 away to Kildare Town, this was always going to be a tough place to get a result and so it proved. The lads gave it their all and more than matched their opponents through out, Dylan Cummins scored for Rovers to claim his second of the season. The 16’s recorded an excellent 5-3 win away to Westmeath side Kilbeggan to set up a third round clash away to Allenwood Celtic or Emo Celtic in round three. The lads put in a five star performance and safely booked their passage into the third round with an impressive display. Nathan Sullivan and Paul Marah both scored two with Chris Mabuza nabbing his first of the season to complete the five goal haul. In local action the 12C’s gained their first win of the season with a 14-2 win over Sporting Greystones, a double hat-trick from Cian Doyle was the highlight of the game. Cian Byrne also notched three goals with Sammy Doyle, Finn Davies, Darragh Carey, Ben Doyle and Shea Bolt all adding one each.
Sunday’s action saw the under 14 girls produce a thrilling 4-4 draw with Mount Merrion, this was a game full of attacking football, a game which could have ended 7-7 or even 8-8. Molly Sweeney hit a hat-trick with Justine Cronin nabbing her first of the season in a thrill a minute match. Special mention to Abi Smith in the Rovers goal, who produced some excellent saves. The under 15B’s were unlucky to go down 2-1 to Arklow Celtic at Whitegates. In a close encounter if the lads had the rub of the green they would have gained their first points of the season. Keelan Vickers scored his first of the season for the lads and on the evidence of this performance that elusive first win is not too far away.
The club’s Last Man Standing competition is back and it starts this coming weekend the 14th of October. Anyone interested in taking part in our competition should text their name and contact details to Charlie Mitchell at 086-3838362 or by email to

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 15th OCTOBER 2017

The senior men travelled to take on Larkview Boys last Friday in the first round of the Polikoff cup. Having lost at home to the same opposition a couple of weeks ago in the league going down 2-1 the lads knew they were in for a tough encounter. What a match it proved to be, it had everything you would expect from a cup tie. Plenty of exciting football, a bucket full of goals, extra time and the dreaded penalty shootout. When the final whistle was blown to bring an end to an epic  game the teams couldn't be separated as the match finished 4-4. Luke Byrne, Ciaran McGettigan, Gareth Murphy and Sean Tobin fired home the Rovers goals in a thrilling spectacle. Then it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout, Rovers held their nerve as they slotted home all five spot kicks with young Rossa Marron in the Rovers goal proving to be the hero with an excellent save from one of Larkview's penalties. Peter Finnegan, Gareth Murphy, Mark Johnson, Tommy Kelly and Mick Delaney netted from the spot for the lads to seal their place in round two in what was an excellent all round team performance. Well done to Greg, Denis, Dido and the lads on a great win.
Our DDSL under 17 team had a good 4-3 home win over Celbridge Town, The teams shared four goals between them in the first fifteen minutes with Celbridge leading twice before Rovers hit back to level through Patrick O’Keane and Luca Rampersaud. Rovers then went 4-2 up with Luca Rampersaud netting his second and Stuart Cox firing home. The away side pulled one back but the lads held on to take all three points with a 4-3 victory.
The under 17A team had a bad day at the office when they suffered a heavy 9-0 defeat at the hands of Avonmore in the first round of the Leinster Youths cup, missing a couple of key players didn’t help the lads but this was a game the lads never got going in at all.
Junior action started on Friday night with the under 14B’s going down 5-2 to Glencormac, Oran Dempsey and Javier Merino notched the goals in a game where the lads could have been a lot closer on the scoreboard. Saturday’s action saw the 12A’s defeat Sporting Greystones 9-0, the match marked two hat-tricks, one from Charlie Czwalina and one from Brian McCaul, singles from Tom Donoghue, Jack Macklin and Joshua Bishop completed the scoring. Our 12B’s suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost 6-2 away to Aughrim Rgrs, Ben Lyons scored his tenth of the season with Luca Sturles hitting the net for the first time. The under 12D team drew 1-1 with Avonmore in a closely fought game, Joe Culleton fired home his first of the season to earn the lads a share of the spoils. The 13A’s made it four wins from four when they defeated local rivals Wicklow Town 5-1 at Finlay Park. An excellent hat-trick from Kai Fitzsimons laid the foundations for this victory with Ross McCrea and Oscar Malcolmson adding one each. An under strength 15B’s lost 8-1 to Arklow Town, the team were missing several regulars and were always up against it. Donal O’Donoghue fired home a consolation for Rovers.
Sunday’s junior action saw the under 14 girls go down 6-0 away to Mount Merrion, after drawing 4-4 last week with the same opposition the girls the girls were hoping for a better result. It is all part of the learning process and we’re sure Niall will have the girls back firing on all cylinders in the next game. Our 13B’s went down away to Arklow Utd by the minimum score when they lost 1-0, the team didn’t play to their normal high standard but still had the chances to get something from the game. The 14A’s made their exit from the SFAI cup when they lost 6-4 after extra time to Kildare side Prosperous Utd, this was a game that got away from the lads as they raced into an early 2-0 lead to give them a great start. Jordan Younger notched a brace with Sean O’Meara and Conor Hunter adding singles.
Our Last Man Standing competition kicked off at the weekend and we had some very high profile casualties. Previous winners of the competition Anthony Earls and Hughie Nolan fell at the first hurdle this time around as their selection Chelsea lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace. Safely through to round two were other previous winners Greg Dunne, Jonathan Lewins, Jim Foley and James Nolan. Chelsea were the scourge of 37 players who made their exit, 8 players lost out after Arsenal lost 2-1 to Watford, Burnley [3], Everton [2], West Ham [2], Huddersfield [1], Southampton [1] and Newcastle [1] were the teams that let other players down. At the time of going to print we had 99 players definitely through to round 2 with five players hoping to join them if Leicester can beat West Brom in the Monday night game.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 22nd OCTOBER 2017

Well storm Brian made his presence felt with a complete wipe out of all WDSL and WFL fixtures at the weekend, the senior game fixed for Friday failed to go ahead due to the severe high winds. A couple of games did go ahead on Sunday, our under 17 DDSL team took on Ardmore Rovers and the lads came out on top after a seven goal thriller winning 4-3. Luca Rampersaud nabbed a brace to bring his tally to twenty two for the season with both Stuart Cox and Stephen Finlay moving onto sixteen for the campaign when they registered a goal a piece in what was a highly entertaining game.
The under 14 girls defeated Peamount United 8-0 in the second round of the Carlton Hotel cup on Sunday, Justine Cronin turned in a girl of the match performance when she fired home a fantastic four goals, Kara Doyle, Anna Dignam, Abi Farrell and Molly Sweeney all scored one each to complete the eight goal haul. A special mention goes to Abi Smyth who produced an excellent save in the first half to preserve their clean sheet.

In midweek action our 15A's continued their excellent run in local football when they beat Roundwood at Whitegates on Tuesday night. The lads conceded their first goal in four games but they went on to win 3-1. They have now won all four games in the shield. In what was a good all round team performance Conor Leonard hit his fourth goal of the season. Stephen Kearns nabbed his second of the campaign with under 14 player Callum Gibney firing home the third.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate Davy and Katriona Rowan on the arrival of baby Josh recently, we wish you all the best of luck, happiness and health for the future. Once again congratulations Davy and Katriona.
The weekend saw the completion of round 2 of our Last Man Standing competition and yet again one of the so called big clubs let a lot of people down. Manchester United’s surprise 2-1 defeat away to Huddersfield saw 29 players exit the competition, Stoke’s failure to beat Bournemouth losing 2-1 meant another 5 players went out. A single player went out on Friday night as they pinned their hopes on the not so Happy Hammers of West Ham as they were trounced 3-0 at home by Brighton. Chelsea’s somewhat fortunate 4-2 win over Watford saw 36 players progress to round three, 23 players moved on after Manchester City brushed a side Burnley winning 3-0. Newcastle’s late winner against Crystal Palace was good enough to see 4 players safely through to the third round. Finally 1 player progressed after Arsenal’s 5-2 victory over Everton on Sunday. All this means 35 players made their exit from the competition with 64 players going safely through to round three. Previous winner Jim Foley was the big name causality in round two while previous winners Greg Dunne, Jonathan Lewins and James Nolan all remain standing hoping to become the first person to win the competition for a second time.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Eddie McDonnell, Glencormac, County Wicklow who sadly passed away recently. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his daughters Sandra, Paula, Tracy and Carol, his son in law Boodhan who manages our DDSL under 17 team, his granddaughter Lucy who plays for our under 14 Girls team and his grandson Luca who plays on our DDSL under 17 team. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this sad time, may he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 29th OCTOBER 2017

The senior men made it four wins on the bounce when they recorded an excellent 4-2 away win over Garda FC, it is now five wins in the last six games with four of those wins been away from home. Maurice Dunne gave Rovers a dream start when he fired them in front after five minutes. Another goal from Maurice Dunne and further goals from Gareth Murphy and Luke Byrne ensured the lads got three valuable points as they climb the table after this fantastic win. The lads are in a bit of a purple patch at present and will be hoping the games come thick and fast. This was another all round impressive performance from the team, which sees them well in the promotion mix in their league.
Our under 17 DDSL team lost 2-1 to league champions Palmerstown at Whitegates. Stephen Finlay gave Rovers the lead with his seventeenth goal of the season but it was short lived as the away side levelled soon after to send the sides in all square at the break. There was nothing to separate the two sides in the second period as they both went in search of a winner, the eventual winner came to the champions from the penalty spot to run out 2-1 victors. The lads were more than a match for the league champions and definitely deserved something from the game.
Saturday’s junior action saw our two remaining sides in SFAI cup action make their exit. The 12A’s went out in controversial circumstances, leading 1-0 in the dying seconds against Edenderry Town the referee seemed to play excessive injury time in which the home side levelled matters. Things got worse when late in the second period of extra time the home side were awarded a disputed penalty, which proved to be the winner. The lads were outstanding on the day and deserved to be in the hat for the next round but they did themselves and the club proud. Another team to do themselves and the club proud were the under 16’s who made the journey to Kildare and were unlucky to lose 5-3 in an eight goal thriller to Allenwood Celtic. Nathan Sullivan helped himself to a brace with Paul Marah nabbing a single in what was a good all round team performance. In local action the under 14A’s maintained their one hundred percent record when they beat Coolboy Rgrs 6-2 away from home. Jordan Younger blasted in a fantastic hat-trick, Callum Gibney netted twice with Sean O’Meara completing the scoring in what was an impressive team effort from the lads. The only game to take place in the junior section on Sunday was the 15A’s home match against Coolboy in which the lads recorded a comfortable 7-0 win. Noah Sheridan nicked a splendid hat-trick to take his tally to four for the season, Fionn Luddy scored his first goals of the season when he fired home a brace. Top scorer Josh Odlum moved on to eight in the scoring stats when he scored one with Stephen Kearns completing the scoring with his third of the campaign. This result means the lads have maximum points from their five shield games to date.
Our Last Man Standing competition has now progressed to week four, at the time of going to print we definitely had 56 players safely through to round 4 with one player each on Burnley and Newcastle in the Monday night game hoping to join them. Five players made their exit after their selection Watford surprisingly went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Stoke. One player went out when their pick West Ham drew with Crystal Palace. Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Swansea booked 38 players a safe passage through, 13 players went through after Liverpool saw off Huddersfield 3-0. Chelsea [3], Man City [1] and Man Utd [1] were the remaining selections to see 5 players progress as they defeated Bournemouth, West Brom and Tottenham respectively. A big thank you to all players who supported our competition and the best of luck to our remaining players.

WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th NOVEMBER 2017

The senior men made it five wins on the spin and six wins in seven when they recorded an excellent 3-2 away win over Ratoath Harps last Friday night. The lads were 1-0 down at the break, somewhat against the run of play. They rectified that in the second period and deservingly drew level when Bryan Doyle fired home his first of the season. It got better for Rovers on fifty eight minutes when Gareth Murphy nabbed his fifth of the season to put the lads 2-1 up. Disaster struck when the home team levelled matters midway through the half. The lads showed their battling character as they retook the lead with thirteen minutes left when Luke Byrne smashed home his fifth of the campaign. This proved to be the decisive goal as the lads saw out the remainder of the game to ensure they claimed three valuable points in their quest for promotion.
Our under 17 DDSL side had a good 7-3 away win over Sacred Heart, Stephen Finlay brought his tally for the season to twenty when he claimed an excellent hat-trick, at the top of the scoring charts Luca Rampersaud moved on to twenty three when he scored one, Stuart Cox moved on to seventeen when he nabbed a single with Patrick O’Keane [9] and Ronan Murray [3] completing the seven goal haul.
Our WDL under 17A’s went down to a disappointing 7-2 home defeat to Avonmore, the lads never got going in this game and will just have to put it down as a bad day at the office. Their goalscorers on the day were Sean Farrell and Nathan Sullivan. The 17B’s received a walkover from Roundwood as they couldn’t field a team.
In midweek action the under 14A’s continued their unbeaten run in local competition when they beat Greystones Utd 5-0 on Thursday night. Jordan Younger just can’t stop scoring as he brought his season tally to thirteen with a brace, Callum Gibney made it six for the campaign when he nabbed a single with Tom Hodgkinson and Mark Hodgkinson notching one a piece to make it four and two respectively for the season.
Saturday’s junior action saw the under 12A’s defeat St Fiachs of Carlow 4-0 in a first leg quarter final Carlow/Wicklow cup game at Whitegates. Jack Macklin, Joshua Bishop, Brian McCaul and Tom Donoghue were all on the score sheet as the lads took a commanding lead to take to Carlow with them for the second leg. In shield action the 12C’s had a comfortable 7-0 away win over Greystones Utd, Cian Doyle Hubbard scored a stunning four goals, James Dunne, Ben Doyle and Callum Hodgkinson all added singles in what was a fantastic all round team performance. In the U12/13 Challenge cup our 13B’s fired ten past St Patricks in a 10-0 victory. Jake Nally helped himself to a splendid hat-trick, Peter Dunne netted a brace and there were singles from Harry Tobin Kelly, Ben Bowen, Charlie Phelan, Ryan McConnell and Ian Kavanagh.
Sunday’s action saw our 11A’s defeat Sporting Greystones 7-0 in the U12/13 Challenge cup, Cian Doyle Hubbard completed a fine solo goal haul of four goals, James Dunne. Ben Doyle and Callum Hodgkinson all added a goal each to complete the scoring. A special mention goes to Jack Wu, Jake Doyle and Luke Dunne who were excellent in the Rovers defence. In the U14/15 Challenge cup our 15B’s made an incredible comeback in their away tie with Carnew, losing 3-0 after fifty five minutes the lads made an astonishing recovery to run out 4-3 winners in a seven goal thriller. Mike Gleeson scored his first goals of the season when he bagged a brace, Adam Shepherd scored his fourth of the campaign with Evan Dwyer completing the scoring in a thrilling encounter.
Well we’re down to the business end of things in our Last Man Standing competition, after round 4 we are now left with 37 players left standing. The biggest casualties were the 16 players that went out after Newcastle lost at home to Bournemouth, a further 3 players made their exit after Southampton lost at home to Burnley with a single player going out after Leicester drew 2-2 with Stoke. The big name casualty in round 4 was previous winner James Nolan, two previous winners Greg Dunne and Jonathan Lewins are still in battling to become the first player to win the competition for a second time [ no pressure Greg and Jonathan]. Of the players to progress 22 went with Tottenham, 8 with Liverpool, 4 with Everton, 2 with Huddersfield and a single player on Man City.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th NOVEMBER 2017

The senior men turned in a very impressive performance when they defeated Valeview Shankill 5-0 at Whitegates last Friday night. This was six wins on the bounce and seven in eight games to continue their excellent form of late. Rovers controlled this game from start to finish and it was a surprise they went in at the half time interval scoreless. The lads came out in the second half and were clinical in front of goal, Mark Johnson set them on their way with an excellent solo effort then on sixty minutes Ciaran McGettigan entered the field of play and he fired home a twenty five minute hat-trick with his three goals coming in the 64 th, 82 nd and 85 th minutes. In among all that Gareth Murphy netted for the fifth successive game to bring his tally to six for the campaign. This was an excellent all round team performance from the lads and puts them back in the title mix.
Junior action began on Thursday night when the 13B’s went down narrowly to Ashford Rovers under the floodlights at Whitegates. The lads lost 2-1 in a highly entertaining game that could have gone either way, Jake Nally fired home the Wicklow goal.
On Saturday the 12B’s went down to a strong Wicklow Town under 13 team in the combined under 12/13 Challenge cup, the Town were far too strong for the lads but to their credit they kept plugging away till the final whistle. The 15A’s maintained their one hundred percent record in domestic action when they defeated closest rivals Roundwood 3-2 in their own backyard, Stephen Kearns, Ryan Delamere’s first of the season and Connor Lewins were the Rovers marksmen on the day, a result which cements their place at the top of the table. The under 16’s gained an impressive point away to joint leaders Avonmore in a thrilling 3-3 draw, Nathan Sullivan, Thomas O’Neill and a first of the campaign from Mathew Quinn earned the lads an excellent share of the spoils.
Sunday’s competitive action was confined to the under 14 girls and they were involved in a thriller at home to Maynooth Town. The away side raced into a 3-0 lead before the girls got going in this game. Anna Dignam pulled one back for Rovers before the break and then in the second half the girls came flying out of the traps with a brace of goals from top scorer Molly Sweeney to level the game at 3-3. Justine Cronin then fired Rovers in front but the away team squared matters with five minutes remaining. Disaster struck deep into injury time when Maynooth nabbed a winner. Abi Smith made some fantastic saves in the Rovers goal. This was an excellent game of football between two evenly matched sides and it was a pity there had to be a loser as a draw would have been the fair outcome after a thrilling game.
Another club membership registration night will take place this coming Friday night the 17th of November in the clubhouse at Whitegates from 7.30pm to 9pm, anyone with outstanding membership is encouraged to attend this registration night. For anyone that can’t attend it is advisable to contact any committee member to arrange payment of club membership.
Our Last Man Standing competition resumes this coming weekend after the international break, we are now at round 5 and with 37 players left standing its all to play for. Selections will be getting trickier at this stage which will test the knowledge of our remaining players. All selections must be in by 7pm on Thursday, the club would like to wish all remaining players the very best of luck and would also like to thank everyone who participated in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th NOVEMBER 2017

Our under 17 DDSL side completed their season with a good 6-3 away win over Ardmore Rovers, Stephen Finlay scored an excellent hat-trick with Luca Rampersaud, Ronan Murray and Stuart Cox all hitting singles in an excellent all round team performance. It was a bad weekend for our two WDL under 17 sides, the A’s went down 3-1 away to Arklow Utd in the league. The lads battled through out but just need a bit of luck to start going their way. Nathan Sullivan scored his second of the season for the lads. The B’s were always going to find it tough going against Gorey Rangers in the Leinster Youth cup and it wasn’t helped by the fact they haven’t had a game in six weeks. The lads lost 4-1 to a much sharper Gorey side and that comes from playing football. Nathan Wynne nabbed his fourth of the season from the penalty spot while Pat Sammon in the Rovers goal was outstanding.

Saturday’s junior action saw our 12B’s gain an excellent 5-3 quarter final cup win over Enniskerry, Luca Sturles nabbed a brace with Oscar Bruxton, Brendan Porter and a first ever goal from Charlie Kenny laying the foundations for this victory. This was an excellent all round performance from the team with Luca Sturles been nominated as the Rovers man of the match. Our under 12C’s record an excellent win in the quarter final of the cup when they beat St Patricks 4-3 after extra time in a seven goal thriller. The lads raced into a 3-1 lead but the away side battled back to send the game into extra time. It was a tense affair but it was Rovers who got the all important fourth goal when Cian Doyle popped up to score and send the lads into the semi final. Cian Doyle and Shea Boltt scored two a piece in what was an excellent all round team performance. The under 13B’s went down 5-1 away to local rivals Wicklow Town in the first leg of their cup semi final, the lads never really got going in this game as they struggled to reach the standards they’ve set themselves. The Rovers goal came in the shape of an own goal with Jake Nally coming in for a special mention. The 14A’s travelled to Ferndale Park in the first leg of their cup semi final and returned to Wicklow with the tie finely balanced after a 1-1 draw. Sean O’Meara put Rovers in front but the home side squared things late on in the game. The Rovers defence and keeper Conor Luddy stood firm in the dying minutes to ensure they return to Whitegates for the second leg all square.
Sunday’s action saw the 13A’s take a 3-0 lead into the second leg of their cup semi final after their 3-0 win over Ashford Rovs, Kai Fitzsimons, Louis Malcolmson and Jack Noble fired home the Wicklow goals. The under 14 girls had a comprehensive 9-0 win away to Lakelands, Justine Cronin scored a fantastic four goals, Molly Sweeney helped herself top a brace and there were singles from Anna Dignam, Aoife Connolly and Aoife Caffrey. Our 14B’s lost 4-2 at home to Coolboy in the first leg of their cup semi final, Tim Hastie scored both the Rovers goals and the lads will be counting themselves a bit unlucky not to get something from the game. The 15A’s take a commanding lead into the second leg of their cup semi final after winning 10-0 at home to Arklow Town, Josh Odlum led the way when he smashed home an incredible four goals, Conor Leonard nabbed two with Ryan Delamere, Noah Sheridan, Connor Lewins and Dylan Cummins all adding one a piece. The 15B’s went down 6-0 away to Wicklow Town, the lads gave it their all and were unlucky on a couple of occasions not to get on the score sheet. In shield action the 16’s went goal crazy as well when they defeated Greystones 10-2, Paul Marah and Michael Ryan both notched two each, there were singles from Thomas O’Neill, Nathan Sullivan, Tom O’Shea, Aidan Kelly, Chris Mabuza and Mathew Quinn to complete the ten goal haul.
Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round 6 next week, after round 5 we only lost 1 player which now leaves us with 36 players left standing. Manchester United’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle saw 23 players go forward to the next round, Liverpool’s comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton means 9 players are safely through to round six, three players progressed on the back of Burnley’s 2-0 victory over Swansea while 1 player went through after Chelsea’s easy 4-0 away win over West Brom. The one player who made their exit came after they put their hopes on Southampton springing a surprise away to Liverpool but unfortunately for them the red side of Merseyside ran out 3-0 winners. We would like to wish all our remaining players the very best of luck in the remainder of the competition and a big thanks goes to everyone that participated in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th NOVEMBER 2017

The senior men made it seven wins on the bounce and eight wins in their last nine games with a very impressive victory over St Francis in the second round of the Polikoff cup. St Francis ply their trade in the league above Rovers and are cup specialists, to make it even more impressive the lads defeated them on their own patch. Gareth Murphy gave Rovers a dream start after three minutes when he fired home his seventh goal of the season. The lead didn’t last long as the home side levelled on eight minutes, St Francis then nudged in front on thirteen minutes. Rovers showed their fighting spirit and battled back to square things up three minutes before the interval through a third of the campaign from Mark Johnson. The second half failed to produce a winner and thirty minutes of extra time couldn’t separate the sides either so it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout. The lads won the shootout 5-4 with Mick Delaney scoring the decisive fifth penalty for Rovers with keeper Shane Doyle saving the all crucial St Francis fifth penalty. This was an excellent all round team performance from the lads and a very impressive scalp to take.
Our 17B’s went down to a heavy 9-1 defeat to a very strong Avonmore side, the lads never performed in this game against a strong fit Avonmore team. Nathan Wynne scored his fifth of the season for a Rovers consolation goal.
Saturday’s junior action saw our under 11’s playing at the under 12 age grade go down 10-9 on penalties to Greystones Utd B in the Challenge cup, ordinary time and extra time failed to produce a goal but this was a very exciting scoreless draw and it was a pity to see either team lose out after a highly entertaining game. Our 13B’s took on local rivals Wicklow Town in their Challenge cup and after losing 5-1 to the same opponents last week it was always going to be a tough encounter for the lads but they were up for the task. They recorded a fantastic 2-1 victory with Charlie Phelan’s third of the season and a second of the season from man of the match Ben Bowen who turned in a very impressive display. This was an excellent performance to reverse the result of last week.
Sunday’s junior action saw only one game in the competitive section and that was the under 15B’s second leg of their Challenge cup game at home to Carnew. Going into the game the lads held a 4-3 lead and they made no slip ups as they saw off Carnew 4-0 at Whitegates to complete an aggregate score of 8-3. Adam Shepherd netted a brace to bring his tally to six for the season with Keevan Doyle also hitting two goals, which gives him four for the season.
Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round 7 which will take place in midweek, in round 6 we lost 4 players on Bournemouth after they could only manage a scoreless draw with Swansea with 1 player who was on Swansea also failing to progress. Four more players went out after Newcastle let them down losing 3-0 at home to Watford, Leicester’s 1-1 draw with West Ham on Friday night saw a further 3 players exit the competition. Stoke’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace meant 1 player went out. Another single player failed to progress when Everton went down 4-1 to Southampton. Burnley’s last minute concession of a penalty to Arsenal saw them lose 1-0 to the Gunners, this result meant we lost one more player but three players progressed on Arsenal. Of the remaining players that progressed 12 players made it through on the back of Manchester United’s somewhat lucky 1-0 home win over Brighton, 3 players made it to round 7 after Southampton defeated Everton 4-1, 1 player progressed after their inspired selection Watford easily saw off Newcastle winning 3-0 at St James Park. Manchester City’s narrow 2-1 win over Huddersfield saw a further 2 players move in to round 7. The big name causality in round 6 was one of our previous winners Jonathan Lewins, which now leaves Greg Dunne as the only previous winner left standing in the competition and battling to be the first player to win the competition for a second time, no pressure Greg. What this means now is that we have 21 players battling it out for the title of Last Man Standing and the €500 prize. Good luck to all remaining players and once again a big thanks to everyone for taking part in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 3rd DECEMBER 2017

The senior men’s recent good run came to an end last Friday night when they lost 6-3 to Ayrfield United. The lads had won their last seven games but it came to an abrupt end at the weekend. They were always chasing the game, they fell 2-0 behind early on but Gareth Murphy pulled one back. They then fell 4-1 behind but yet again the lads battled back when they reduced the deficit with goals from Luke Byrne and Ciaran McGettigan to make it 4-3, unfortunately for the lads this was as close as they got with Ayrfield firing in a further two goals to run out 6-3 winners.
Our under 17A’s and 17B’s had disappointing results at the weekend, the A’s went down 6-1 away to Ashford Rovers with Nathan Sullivan nabbing their consolation goal. The B’s gave it their all in their 4-1 away defeat to Aughrim Rangers, Nicky Kearney popped in their goal.
Saturday’s junior action saw the under 12A’s progress to the semi final of the Carlow/Wicklow cup when they drew with St Fiaccs to run out 5-1 winners on aggregate. Josh Butler scored the Rovers goal in what was a very good all round team performance. The 12D team who are playing a year above their natural age group recorded an excellent victory in their cup semi final. After finishing all square drawing 3-3 in a humdinger of a cup tie with St Anthonys the lads went on to win 2-0 on penalties. A brace from Sonny McHale and a single from Alex Dunne set the lads up for the dreaded penalty shootout but fortunately for the lads they came out the right side. The 15A’s continued their dominance of their age group with a 7-0 second leg cup semi final win to progress on a 17-0 aggregate win. Goalkepper Andrew Nolan who came out of goals netted an excellent hat-trick, Josh Odlum fired home a brace with Dylan Cummins and Connor Lewins adding one a piece to complete the scoring.
On Sunday the under 14 girls went down 4-0 to a strong Mount Merrion side in the Carlton Hotel cup quarter final, the girls went into the game short of several regulars but to their credit they gave a great account of themselves. On the day Eve Kelly put in a fantastic display at centre back, Abi Farrell also comes in for a special mention for her display in midfield and at right full back when moved there. The under 14A’s exited the cup when they went down 2-1 to Arklow Celtic losing 3-2 on aggregate, in a closely fought encounter over the two games this was a tie that could have went either way. Mark Hodgkinson netted for Rovers. The 14B’s had an excellent 2-1 away win over Coolboy Rangers in the second leg of their cup semi final, this was a great result for the lads but unluckily they went down 5-4 on aggregate. Rory Hannon and Tim Hastie fired home the Rovers goals and they will look back at this and wonder what might have been.
Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round 9 next weekend. In round 8 we just lost the one player when their selection West Brom failed to beat struggling Crystal Palace drawing 0-0. Of the 11 players who progressed to round 9, six were successful when their selection Everton comfortably saw off newly promoted Huddersfield winning 2-0. Three players went with Stoke City and they done the business by beating Swansea 2-1. One player moved smoothly into round 9 when their choice Chelsea swept a side Newcastle winning 3-1. The last player to make it through went with Leicester and the Foxes duly obliged when narrowly winning by a goal to nil against Burnley. Our remaining 11 players will battle it out again this weekend to see who can move a step closer to the Last Man Standing title and the €500 prize. Good luck to all remaining 11 players and once again a big thanks to everyone who participated in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 10th DECEMBER 2017

Due to the inclement weather at the weekend all games fell foul of the bad weather, the senior men were due to travel to Naas for the third round of the Leinster Junior cup but that was a victim of the bad weather as well.
Well at the time of going to print round 9 of our Last Man Standing competition was completed, we had 11 players left standing going into action at the weekend but that has now been whittled down to 5 players after the weekend's series of games. Two players went out after West Brom's 1-0 defeat away to Swansea. Two more players crashed out after Crystal Palace's eventful 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth. A further two players were eliminated when their selection Newcastle slipped up 3-2 at St James Park to Leicester. Burnley's narrow 1-0 win over Watford was good enough to see three players progress to round 10 while Leicester 3-2 win over Newcastle saw two players make it through. Previous Last Man Standing champion Greg Dunne is still clinging on in there in an attempt to become the first player to win the competition for a second time. Round 10 should be a tense affair. Good luck to our remaining five players in round ten.

WICKLOW ROVERS  CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th DECEMBER 2017

We had a curtailed programme of games in the club last week, just three teams were in action. The under 13A’s defeated Ashford Rovers 4-1 in the second leg of their cup semi final to win 7-1 on aggregate. Mikey Nolan completed the scoring with his first of the season to cap off an outstanding performance from the lads. The 15B’s put in an excellent performance against neighbours Wicklow Town, after losing the first leg of their semi final on a 6-0 scoreline they came out and put in a spirited display to win the second leg 2-1. Keevan Doyle fired home his fifth of the season with a first of the campaign from Javier Perez Dirube ensuring the lads secured a well deserved victory. Our under 16’s drew 2-2 with Coolboy Rangers at Whitegates in their shield final 3 first leg game. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 31st DECEMBER 2017

Wicklow Rovers over 40's entertained their counterparts and friends from Arklow Town last Saturday night at Whitegates in aid of Parkinsons Ireland. After a closely fought encounter the Town ran out narrow 1-0 winners to gain revenge for last years defeat. The decisive goal came on the stroke of half time in what was a very exciting game. With ten minutes remaining the floodlights failed, bringing a premature end to the match. Rumour has it that Rovers scored at the point the lights  went out but the referee was having none of it. Also it was mentioned that a mystery person had gone into Paddy Powers and laid a bet on Arklow Town to win 1-0 and this fuelled speculation that the mystery person switched the lights off. Anyway as per rules the result stands at the time of abandonment, which means Arklow Town take the trophy back down the N11. A big thanks to the heros of the past from Wicklow Rovers and Arklow Town for taking part in this game which was for a worthy cause. A big thanks to the officials on the day Paul O'Brien, Tony [Butch] Doran and Willie O'Brien who officiated the game so well and donated €100 to Parkinsons Ireland. Thanks also to Denise O'Shea who kindly offered her services in her role as physio to both sides, thanks Denise. A massive thanks to all the people from Arklow and Wicklow who came out to cheer the teams on while also supporting the charity. Finally a big thanks to everyone for organising the event. Everyone went back to Ernies to sooth the aching limbs and relive the memories of past years when the limbs didn't ache as much. Well done everyone.
The executive committee of Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish the managers, assistant managers, coaches, players, parents and supporters of the club a Happy and Healthy New Year. We would also like to wish a Happy New Year to all the clubs, WDSL committee, WDFL committee, DDSL committee, LSL committee, MGL committee, DWSL committee, referees, Paul Dowling of the Herald, Dave Devereux, Brendan Lawrence and all the staff of the Wicklow People.

At present we have people like Robbie Dover, Maria Lewins, Anthony Earls and Charlie Mitchell helping out doing non executive roles which takes the pressure of committee members, for this the club are so grateful and appreciate their help so much. So if you feel you have something to offer why not have a chat with one of our committee members and see where you can help our club prosper.
