WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 23rd FEBRUARY 2020

Our Leinster Senior side made it five wins on the bounce with an excellent 4-2 away win over Railway Union in the third round of the Tom Carroll cup. The lads fell one behind to their higher ranked opponents and then had Rossa Marron to thank when he prevented the home side increasing their lead with a magnificent save. Rovers drew level ten minutes before the break when Ciaran McGettigan fired home and then took the lead on the stroke of half time when David O’Connor slotted home from the penalty spot after Ciaran McGettigan was taken down in the area. Five minutes into the second half Tommy Kelly scored his first of the season after good work from David O’Connor and Ciaran McGettigan. The fourth came courtesy of a deflection off a home defender with the home side adding a consolation in injury time. In what was a good team performance a few players came in for a special mention. Rossa Marron kept his side in the tie at 1-0 with a fantastic save and David Rowan, David O’Connor, Ciaran McGettigan and Paul Newsome also stood out.

Our under 18’s went down 4-1 at home to Coolboy Rangers on Saturday, the lads went in front late in the first half when Paul Marah coolly converted from the penalty spot. The lead didn’t last long as the away side drew level just before the break. Coolboy went on to add three further goals in the second period to claim all three points. Our under 17's were involved in a nine goal thriller away to Arklow United in Ferndale Park. Rovers came out on top winning 5-4 in a game that had everything to warm up the supporters on a chilly afternoon. Sam Brown had a fantastic day in front of goal firing home all five Rovers goals to complete an amazing solo haul of goals to earn all three points for his side.

Well the start of the WDSL was a non starter at the weekend with the league putting the start of the season back a week due to administration issues, it is hoped to start the season next weekend the 29th of February.

Our Last Man Standing competition started at the weekend, we had 92 players on the starting line looking to capture the title of Last Man Standing champion and the €500 prize. Of the 45 players to progress, 21 players progressed after their selection Wolves defeated Norwich winning 3-0, Manchester United's 3-0 home win over Watford saw a further 15 played ease through to round two, 3 players went through after Southampton saw off Aston Villa winning 2-0. Crystal Palace’s narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle saw a further 3 players progress while a single player made it to round two on the strength of Burnley's 3-0 win over Bournemouth. Sheffield United’s 1-1 stalemate with Brighton meant 15 players went out at the first hurdle. At the time of going to print 45 players were safely through to round two with a further 32 players hoping to join them if champions elect Liverpool see off West Ham in the Monday night game. There is no Last Man Standing this week due to the Carabao cup final. Fixtures for round two will be sent out on Sunday the 1st of March for fixtures the weekend of Saturday the 7th of March.

The weather played havoc with the fixtures at the weekend, Storm Dennis definitely made his presence felt with all our club fixtures falling victims of the bad weather. All WDFL fixtures that were set for the weekend will now be played next weekend the 22nd/23rd of February.

Our Last Man Standing competition kicks off next Saturday the 22nd of February, at this stage all players should have received the fixtures for round one. The rules are simple, you select a team you think will win from the supplied fixtures and text it to 087-9108706 by 7pm on the Thursday prior to the fixtures. If your selection fails to win you are eliminated from the competition, you can’t select the same team twice so choose wisely. Players keep selecting every week till the last person is left standing and therefore will claim the €500 prize. Should two or more players remain standing and all are eliminated in the same week the prize will be equally divided among them. A full set of rules can be viewed on the home page of the club website at www.wicklowrovers.com

All managers please remember with the new junior season upon us we request that you send in your match result and goalscorers to your relevant fixtures secretary as soon as possible on completion of your match. The club recently added four new members to our executive committee and they have brought a lot to the table. They answered the call to come and help the club and they have had a positive influence since they came on board. But we are always in need of people to help out, you can never have enough volunteers.  Just don’t assume someone else is going to step forward, the club always needs fresh blood in order to help the club progress and prosper. Any little bit of assistance would be a big help. With twenty four teams in the club if we got one representative from each team to help out for one year we would then have a very healthy committee to help the club prosper. The club promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and senior men and ladies in the community, our club is growing all the time and the committee could do with any help that people are willing to offer, any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th FEBRUARY 2020

Our Leinster Senior side kept their recent winning run going with a comfortable 6-1 away win over bottom of the table Hartstown/Huntstown on Saturday. The lads took control of the game early in play and went in at the break 3-1 to the good. The second half saw them kick on adding a further three goals to earn them three points in their quest for promotion. Ciaran McGettigan fired home a brace with Dylan Orr, Tom Smullen, Rikki Quinn and Peter Finnegan all registering singles. This was a good footballing display from the lads despite the tricky conditions.

Our Wicklow league team, who are kindly sponsored by Phone Pulse, came up against a formidable St Peters team in Fassaroe on last night. On a cold and blustery night the conditions didn’t help any efforts that were being put into playing football, but both teams to their credit kept the ball down and played it around the park.St Peters drew first blood early on from a set-piece. Rovers were having to work very hard for every ball and piece of possession. St Peters made it 2-0 midway through the half when a cross deflected off the Rovers centre half into the back of the net. Rovers were lucky to get to half time at 2-0, with Ian Murphy being called upon to thwart the St Peters attack on a couple of occasions. The second half saw a much more positive Rovers side take the field and they began to play some fine football, but it wasn’t to be on the night as St Peters finished out the game as 2-0 winners. The more experienced St Peters team prevailed on the day but Rovers will look to draw from the experience gained in this game to help them in the rest of the campaign.

The youths went down to a disappointing 5-1 defeat away to Avonmore with Aaron Lynch scoring the lone Rovers goal. The under 17's went down 5-0 to local neighbours Wicklow Town. Despite the defeat the team were happy with their performance against a very strong Town side.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd FEBRUARY 2020
Our Leinster Senior side continued their recent good form with their third win on the bounce with an excellent 4-1 away success over Portlaoise. The lads made the long journey to the county Laois town and came home with all three points to continue their climb up the table. Rovers went in at the half time break 1-0 up courtesy of a Dylan Orr goal, Orr was quickest to react to a rebound to fire the ball home. The second half proved to be similar to the first with both teams trying to get into some sort of rhythm. It was Rovers who proved to be the more clinical in front of goal though and on sixty minutes Tom Smullen scored to double the Rovers lead. Three minutes later Rovers finally killed off their opponents with a third goal, this time it came from a wicked deflection from a Portlaoise player. The home side pulled a goal back with a screamer with eight minutes left on the clock. Whatever hope the home side had of making a dramatic comeback was put to bed immediately from the restart when Tom Smullen added his second of the game and Rovers fourth. The lads saw out the remaining minutes to gain another welcomed three points which sees them move to within two points of their opponents in the safe area of mid table but more importantly they have four games in hand on Portlaoise. With games in hand on all the teams above and around them they know if they can maintain their winning run they can gatecrash the promotion party. This proved to be a solid team performance from Rovers on what was a terrible day for football with the gale force wind and bad underfoot conditions making good football very difficult.

Our Wicklow League side saw their unbeaten run come to an end when they lost out to one of the title favourites Avonmore in Rathdrum on Sunday. The lads lost out 5-3 in an eight goal thriller, the home side sprung from the traps quickly and raced into a 2-0 lead early in play. But this young Rovers team have shown in recent times that their no pushover. Jack Kelly got on the end of a Simon Philips cross to halve the deficit. Shortly after Kelly drew Rovers level when he whipped home a free kick for his second of the game. Rovers were on top at this stage with Alan Power, Dean Noble and Brian Harrington pulling the strings in the centre of the pitch. Against the run of play the home side nosed in front but yet again Rovers battled back with a strike from Harrington to send the sides in level at 3-3 at the break. The home side came out for the second half all guns blazing and they came up with two well worked goals to lead 5-3, a lead they never surrendered. The lads did have the chances but it wasn't to be on the day as the home side did their title hopes the power of good. It was a good performance from the team and they will look forward to hopefully getting back to winning ways next week.
