WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 28th JANUARY 2018

The senior men travelled to Berryfield to take on Enniskerry YC in an all county Wicklow tussle in the Leinster Senior League last Friday night. With both teams only separated by three points in the table with Rovers ahead in the standings this was going to be a very important encounter with both sides harbouring hopes of promotion. Wicklow came flying out of the traps with two goals in the space of a minute just after the ten minute mark. On eleven minutes Tommy Kelly fired Rovers in  front with his second of the season, a minute later the scoring machine Gareth Murphy made it 2-0 which now means he has found the back of the net in all of Rovers last ten games. After twenty five minutes the home team got themselves back in the match when they halved the deficit. Rovers went in at the break 2-1 in front. The next goal in the second period was always going to be crucial and it was Rovers who supplied it with young Ciaran McGettigan nabbing his ninth goal in seven games to put Rovers in the driving seat. Rovers rounded off a very impressive victory with an injury time penalty from Gareth Murphy for his second of the game to put a dent in the home sides promotion hopes while putting themselves very much in the promotion mix up. This was a competitive game with the difference been that Wicklow were more clinical in front of goal to run out 4-1 winners. Next up for Rovers is a fourth round Leinster Junior Cup tussle with Ayrfield United in Whitegates next Friday night.
Both our under 17 teams come into direct opposition to each other in the Wicklow District Youth League. The A's took on the B's in what turned out to be a very entertaining inter club derby. The game was played under lights at Whitegates and it was the B side who made the brighter start. The B's created the clearer cut chances in the first half as they had the A's defence in disarray on several occasions. They rattled the woodwork twice and had a couple of good  chances cleared off the line. Just before the break the B's took a deserved lead when Nathan Wynne slotted home to send the B's in at the break 1-0 in front. If the first half belonged to the B team it was the complete opposite in the second period with the A's taking control of the match pushing their club mates back. The A's were well on top in the second half and it was no surprise when Luke Whyte hooked in an effort to level proceedings and then popped up with a second shortly after to make it 2-1 to the A's. The A's were reduced to ten men when one of their players harshly received a second yellow card for taking a quick free kick. This seemed to spur them on and they sealed the points when Jack Colaluca coolly dispatched the ball over the advanced keeper from thirty five yards. The A's ran out 3-1 winners but this was a game that was in the balance for a long time. Both sets of players were a credit to themselves and the club as the game was played out in great spirit with not one bad challenge through out the whole ninety minutes, well done to both sets of players.

The under 14 Girls welcomed Enniskerry to Whitegates on Sunday morning for their first game in 6 weeks. The squad were missing several players through illness and a couple that arrived, were only over the same. This allowed for several positional changes and some squad members to get valuable game time. Enniskerry arrived in strength and both teams looked forward to a challenging game. Enniskerry scored first on 4 minutes and followed up with goals on 16 and 20 minutes to leave the half  time score 0-3. Rovers regrouped at half time and during the second half produced an excellent defensive performance with goalkeeper Abi Smith and her back four fighting hard to achieve a second half clean sheet.   Some nice football through midfield allowed the Rovers front line create a couple of chances that the visiting keeper did well to save. To the credit of both sides the game was very keenly contested throughout and the final result of 0-3 undervalues the development lessons the players got today. The girls would like to thank everyone who came to support them.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 21st JANUARY 2018

The senior men sailed through to round four of the Leinster Junior Cup with a comprehensive 7-1 victory over Kildare side Naas United at Whitegates on Friday night. The lads went into an early lead when Tommy Kelly fired home his first of the season but the lead didn't last long as Naas drew level a few minutes later. Gareth Murphy who is in a rich scoring vein at the moment put Rovers back in front midway through the half to make it now nine successive games he has found the back of the net and from this point onwards there was only going to be one winner. Jim Foley added two goals from penalties either side of the interval for his first goals of the campaign to make it 4-1. Another player on fire in front of goal at the moment is Ciaran McGettigan and he netted from a tight angle for his eighth goal in six games to make it 5-1. Luke Byrne [7] and Peter Finnegan [3] nabbed a goal a piece to give the lads a resounding 7-1 win to book a meeting with the winners of Ayrfield United or Bunclody at Whitegates in the fourth round. This was an excellent all round team performance from the lads. Well done lads.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 14th JANUARY 2018

The senior men welcomed league leaders Doddervale/Orwell Utd FC to Whitegates last Friday night. The lads were hoping to follow up last week's impressive away draw with second placed Castleknock Celtic with a win against the table toppers. The game didn't start off too well for Rovers with the away side making the early running. On the quarter hour mark Doddervale/Orwell Utd FC went in front when Rovers got caught in possession and they duly dispatched the ball to the back of the net. This seemed to be the wake up call Rovers needed as from this point onwards the lads took total control of the game. Rovers netted goals in the 20 th, 28 th and 37 th minutes from Gareth Murphy, Ciaran McGettigan and Maurice Dunne to leave them 3-1 up at the break. The early part of the second period was going to be crucial as the lads were playing against a stiff breeze so they were hoping to weather the expected onslaught. Five minutes into the half Rovers scored the all important next goal as they would say, Ciaran McGettigan made a terrific run down the right before squaring the ball to Gareth Murphy who slammed the ball to the net for his second to make it 4-1. Rovers continued to manage the game well with the defence holding firm and keeper Shane Doyle acting as an extra sweeper reading the game well to come and capture any balls over the top. Doyle made an excellent save midway through the half to turn the ball around the post evading serious injury when he collided with the upright. Rovers were in control around the middle of the part with Tommy Kelly doing the simple things effectively for his team.  With twenty minutes remaining Rovers put the icing on the cake and it couldn't have fell to a better recipient. The hard working Ciaran McGettigan did all his own work for this goal, he chased down the away defender before getting his body in the way to charge down the clearance, he then raced away and coolly and neatly placed the ball in the bottom corner of the net for his second of the match. This was a very impressive display from the squad, the whole squad worked hard through out the game with every player playing his part. Sometimes it's hard to select a man of the match but when push comes to shove we have to make the selection. From my point of view and l don't think there could be many arguments against my selection for man of the match as l would go with Ciaran McGettigan. Ciaran led the line well, his willingness to run and close down for his team could never be questioned. For such a young man his strength and pace caused problems all night for the away defence. His hold up play was excellent, add to this he provided two well taken goals and also provided the assist for the fourth goal, a worthy recipient of man of the match.  All in all it was an outstanding result and an excellent all round squad performance, well done lads.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th JANUARY 2018

The senior men resumed action on Friday night when they travelled away to take on second placed Castleknock Celtic. The lads came home with an excellent point but it could have been even better as the lads had the chances to win the game. Rovers led 1-0 before been pegged back when Castleknock fired home the next two goals to hit the front. Rovers then battled back to level matters, which was the very least they deserved. Gareth Murphy nabbed his ninth of the season with Ciaran McGettigan firing home his sixth of the campaign in what was a solid team performance in their first game after the Christmas break. This point was enough to send our opponents to the top of the table but it also keeps the lads very much in promotion contention. A good start to the new year, well done lads.
