WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 27th JANUARY 2019.
Our senior men’s B team went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Greystones at Whitegates on Sunday morning, the lads had several good chances but failed to take them. In what was a fairly even contest it was the away side who took the three points with the only goal of the game. The lads went close to gaining a point when Rob Talaga rattled the post with an excellent volley in the second half but they rued several missed chances to gain a share of the spoils.
Our under 15 girls travelled to take on Leixlip Utd and unfortunately they went down to a 5-2 defeat. The early stages of the game saw both sides play some nice tidy football. The home side went in front on fifteen minutes, a lead they held to the half time break. Leixlip extended their lead shortly into the second half but Rovers hit back with a tidy finish from Molly Sweeney. The hosts regrouped and blitzed Rovers with three goals in a seven minute spell to put the game to bed. At 5-1 down most teams would drop the heads but to the girls credit they battled right up to the final whistle, their character and determination were rewarded with a goal from Aoife Caffrey.
Open training sessions will be held this week for our under 13's and under 15's. The open training session for under 13's (Born 2006) will be held in Whitegates on Friday the 1st of February, it will run from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The under 15's (Born 2004) will be at Whitegates on Wednesday (tonight) the 30th of January, it will run from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Anyone interested in playing at either age group and are unable to attend should inform any committee member or private message us on our club Facebook page.
With the club’s executive committee down to the bare minimum regards numbers, the club is urgently in need of volunteers to step forward to help out on the committee. With only five members on the executive committee at present we are sending out this request for people to come forward to assist with the running of the club. Just don’t assume someone else is going to step forward, the club seriously needs fresh blood in order to help the club progress and prosper. The way it is at present the five people on the committee are snowed under with work and could do with a helping hand with the workload. Any little bit of assistance would be a big help. With twenty six teams in the club if we got one representative from each team to help out for one year we would then have a very healthy committee to help the club prosper. If each team in the club had one representative on the committee every year we would definitely get a lot more done in order for the club to prosper. The club promote soccer for schoolboys/girls, youths and senior men and ladies in the community, our club is growing all the time and the committee is getting smaller, any assistance with the help of running the club would be very much appreciated.
The new junior season is just around the corner, the WDSL season is due to start on the weekend of the 16th of February with the community shields at the under 13’s, 14’s and 15’s and then the league action kicks off the following weekend the 23rd/24th of February.
The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne. The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 20th JANUARY 2019

The senior men’s A team took on Ardmore Rovers in a top of the table clash at Whitegates on Saturday afternoon. The lads recorded an excellent 4-0 win which sees them leapfrog their opponents in the table to go joint top with Ballymun United, the lads have also two games in hand over their rivals. The lads controlled the majority of the game and went in front on nineteen minutes when Ciaran McGettigan fired home. They virtually killed off the game as a contest when McGettigan claimed two goals in a minute to complete his hat-trick just before the break to send the lads in with a comfortable 3-0 interval lead. The second took awhile to heat up but then Gareth Murphy had two golden chances to add to their tally, first he was denied by a good save from the Ardmore keeper and then he was left frustrated when his powerful header went narrowly wide of the target. Ardmore created a couple of good chances but Rossa Marron was perfectly placed to save on both occasions. The fourth goal came ten minutes from time when Ciaran McGettigan made a great run down the left to cross where Luke Byrne drilled home at the second attempt. The Wicklow rear guard of Rossa Marron in goal and the back four of Jim Foley, Ian Brannigan, Rikki Quinn and Davy Rowan were rock solid on the day and limited the away team to a couple of half chances but the man of the match without any dispute went to Ciaran McGettigan for an excellent hat-trick and an assist for the fourth goal plus his constant tireless running for his team.

Our senior B team’s good run came to an end on Sunday when they lost 3-1 away to Arklow United. After two good cup wins the lads are still seeking their first victory in league action. James Lang netted his first of the season to give the lads a consolation goal.

The under 15 girls were cruelly denied a place in the final of the MGL Academy final when they lost out 3-2 on the dreaded penalty shootout against Terenure. Justine Cronin got on the end of an Aoife Caffrey corner to put Rovers 1-0 on eleven minutes. Disaster struck midway through the second period when Terenure levelled matters. The game finished 1-1 and extra time failed to separate the two sides and then it was on to the lottery of penalties where Terenure emerged the winners. Well done to the girls and their manager Niall Cull on a tremendous effort and with a bit of luck on the day they could have booked their place in the final. We would like to wish Terenure the best of luck in the final.

Our senior B team were back in action at the weekend when they travelled to take on Aughrim Rangers in the Wicklow Cup. A very youthful Rovers won 4-3 on penalties after the teams were all square at 1-1 after extra time. Stuart Cox gave Rovers a 1-0 half time lead from the penalty spot. The home side levelled also from the spot to send the game to extra time, extra time failed to produce a winner so it was on to the dreaded penalty shootout.  Stuart Cox, Robert Talaga, Hugh Humby and Adam Cuddihy were all successful with their spotkicks with Colin Smullen producing a vital penalty save to see Rovers progress to the next round.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 13th January 2019

Our senior men’s A team went top of the league over the weekend without kicking a ball. As a result of their opponents Glasnevin FC been unable to field a team the lads received a walkover and the three points that’s sees them leapfrog Ardmore Rovers at the top. The lads would have preferred a game but at the end of the day it was beyond their control.

The senior B team recorded an excellent 5-0 home win over Newtown United B in a preliminary round game in the Division 2 Thomas Scott Cup. The lads controlled the game from start to finish creating numerous chances. Rovers went in front on the stroke of half time when Jack Crowley pinged an effort to the bottom left hand corner to send the lads in at the break one up. In truth the lads should have been further ahead but they came up against an inspired Newtown keeper who pulled off several excellent saves. The Newtown keeper continued his impressive display in the second period but he could do nothing to prevent Luca Rampersaud doubling the Rovers lead around the hour mark. After this the floodgates opened and Stuart Cox took over firing home a very impressive hat-trick with one coming from the penalty spot to see Rovers progress to the next round after a very impressive team performance.

Some dates have been scheduled for open training sessions for some of our junior section, under 10’s [Born 2009] will be on Sunday January 20th at Whitegates at 2pm: Under 11’s [Born 2008] will be on Saturday January 19th in the Rocky Road at 10am: Under 12’s [Born 2007] will be on Saturday January 19th at Whitegates from 10am to 11.30 am. Existing and new players are welcomed to attend.
