WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th JANUARY 2020

Our Leinster senior team got back to winning ways in midweek when they recorded an excellent 4-1 home victory over Ballyfermot United at Whitegates. The lads fell behind after only six minutes but they then turned in a very impressive forty minutes to blitz the away side. The impressive twin strike force of Daniel Tarcevskis and Ciaran McGettigan tormented the away defence all night, their pace and power had the away rearguard at sixies and sevens. Both Daniel and Ciaran found the net on a couple of occasions. The second half was a bit of a non event and was probably down to the game being killed off as a contest. On Saturday they added another three points with a good 3-1 win over Newlands/Castle Park at Whitegates. The first half saw the lads struggle to reach the standards we have come accustomed to seeing from them resulting with the away side going in at the break one to the good. The lads looked a complete different team in the second period as they were on the front foot for most of the half. The game turned completely inside a minute around the fifty seventh minute. First Ciaran McGettigan was fouled in the area to earn his side a penalty. Ian Brannigan coolly dispatched the resulting spot kick to the back of the net to bring his side level. Less than a minute later Rovers were in front, Tommy Smullen was tenacious in the challenge right from the restart to put McGettigan in and he made no mistake to make it 2-1. With five minutes left on the clock McGettigan latched onto a long clearance from defence and raced clear of the Dubliners defence to clinically fire home to seal the win.

Our Wicklow League side extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a fantastic 7-2 away victory over Ashford Rovers. Jack Kelly set them on their way firing home a free kick around the twenty minute mark, moments later it was 2-0 when Luca Rampersaud nodded home. Robert Keogh made it three with a thunderbolt of a header. The home side pulled one back but just before the break the lads restored their three goal advantage when Keogh fired in his second goal of the game. Early in the second half Jack Kelly stepped up to another free and curled in his second of the game to make it 5-1. Ashford reduced the arrears from the penalty spot soon after but there was no stopping the lads in this form. Rampersaud beat three defenders to nab his second and the lads sixth and then he completed the scoring with his hat-trick to record an impressive victory for the lads in what was an excellent all round team performance.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th JANUARY 2020

The recent bad run of results that our Leinster Senior side have found themselves in continued at the weekend when they narrowly went down 2-1 away to fourth placed Fairview YC. The lads were slowly into their stride but after fifteen minutes they got a foothold in the game making all the running up to the break without creating anything in the way of a clear cut chance. Unfortunately the lads were hit on the break just before half time when Fairview went one up. The second period was more of the same with the lads dictating the play, lady luck was definitely not on Rovers side as they rattled the woodwork on three occasions. With fifteen minutes left on the clock the lads thought their luck was changing when they were awarded a penalty which Adam Cox duly dispatched to the net to level matters. But their luck didn’t last long as the home side scored an undeserved winner deep into injury time. This defeat sees them without a win in their last five games but in truth they haven’t had the rub of the green in a number of those games. Saturday saw them lose out to a strike deep into injury time when a draw looked on the cards. Their performances in these games deserve better but at the moment things are just not going their way. Even though the lads find themselves rooted to the bottom of the league they have games in hand on all the teams above them so a run of positive results could see them climb the table and even make a surge for one of the promotion spots.

Our Wicklow League side faced a mammoth task when they took on Wicklow Cup holders Glencormac United in their own backyard in the first round of the Wicklow Cup. Cup scalps don’t come any bigger than the holders and what a scalp this was for this very young Rovers side as they defeated Glencormac 2-1 in a tough encounter. In a first half controlled by Rovers they went in at the break 1-0 up through a calmly taken goal from Luca Rampersaud. The lads were unlucky not to go in at the break two goals to the good as a combination of Jamie Power and Luca Rampersaud struck the woodwork. The holders came out all guns blazing in the second half and drew level, this seemed to spur Rovers on and they retook the lead when Rampersaud and Jack Kelly combined to set up Stephen Finlay who coolly dispatched the ball to the net for what proved to be the winner. Riain Sweetman went close to adding a third as Rovers searched for the insurance goal. The Rovers defence remained solid throughout and when they were breached Ian Murphy was on hand to pull off an excellent save to ensure Rovers progressed to the next round. As cup scalps go, they don’t come any bigger than the holders and this is a result that should fill this very young team with confidence going forward as they compete at the top grade of Wicklow football.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th JANUARY 2020

Our Leinster Senior side made a disappointing exit at the third round stage of the Noel Ryan cup last Friday night. They travelled to take on inform side Sacred Heart Firhouse Clover but unfortunately for the lads they suffered a 3-0 defeat. The lads made most of the early running but got caught on the break with a long ball over the top, the goal was hotly disputed as the lads deemed the ball had crossed the end line before it was pulled back for the goal but the referee decided otherwise. The home side doubled their lead just before the break with a well worked goal. The lads stepped it up in the second period and put their hosts on the back foot. Rovers thought they had a penalty midway through the half for a handball, but the referee waved away the Rovers appeals. Things got worse for the lads when they were reduced to ten men with twenty minutes remaining and with the numerical difference the hosts added a third with fifteen minutes left to kill off any hopes Rovers had of getting back into the game. The home side probably deserved their win, but a couple of crucial decisions went against Rovers at critical times of the match. The lads will now regroup and try to get a winning run together to progress up the league table.

The club's youth team maintained their good form at Whitegates this season as they overcame Arklow United 5-0 in the John Tobin Youth League. Rovers took the lead midway through the first period when Thomas O’Neill latched onto skipper Paul Marah’s through ball to round the away keeper and score. Their lead was doubled just before half time when Keane Furlong headed in Marah’s corner. The second half was just a couple of minutes old when it became 3-0. From Marah’s corner, Furlong’s shot was parried with Matthew Quinn reacting to the rebound. O’Neill turned provider as Dylan Moriarty grabbed a fourth and just before the end, Paul Marah pounced on a back pass to fire in the fifth. In a fine squad effort by Rovers, the central defensive pair of Deano Doran and Tee Jay Russell put in excellent displays.

The club are holding an open training session for under 14’s [Born 2006] for the new season. This session will take place at Whitegates this coming Saturday the 11th of January at midday. All present and new players are welcomed to attend, anyone interested in playing but are unavailable to attend should contact any committee member with their details.
