WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 30th JUNE 2019
Well the fun day was an absolute success on Saturday, there was a great buss around Whitegates with a large crowd present enjoying the good weather and the activities on the day. There is a few people we need to thank for putting on a great day, they even organised the weather to be kind. Firstly a massive thanks to Trevor and Yvonne Conyard for putting so much time and effort in to organizing the event. It is definitely fantastic to see our fun day resurrected and both of these people deserve great credit for it. But every great leaders need a good team behind them and in fairness there was a massive amount of help provided. Aishling O'Neill, Stephen Clarke and Ross Byrne carried out trojan work helping Trevor and Yvonne and played a big part in making the day a success so well done Aishling, Ross and Stephen. A big thanks to Johnny Dunne and his grounds crew for having the pitch and grounds looking immaculate, also the country flags looked fantastic fluttering in the breeze. Thanks to Anthony Earls for been on hand all day to help when ever required. A huge thanks to all the managers/coaches/parents/players who helped with managing the teams and refereeing the matches, without you it wouldn't have been possible to run the games. Thanks to Niall Cull and Jim Barnes for their help, Jim with providing the target net and setting it up, Niall for all his help on the day and having his team on hand to help out with the teams. A big thanks to One Stop Auto [bouncy castle and obstacle course], John Porter Construction and Stan's and Tony's [medals] and Stephen and Paddy at Irish Popcorn Company [slush puppy and popcorn machines] for your kind sponsorship for the event. Yet again thanks to Brendan Porter for the use of his PA system, Brendan helps us all year round with transportation of goals around the grounds as well, thanks Brendan. Thanks to all the girls who helped with the shop, a special thanks to Ciara Dover for painting the soak the manager/coach board and bringing me personally a cup of coffee just when it was needed most. Thanks to everyone who supported our raffle and all the ticket sellers. Finally thanks to all the kids and parents for coming out in such large numbers. If l have forgot to mention someone I'm sorry but this just shows that so many people were willing to help it’s hard to remember who did what. It just shows what can be achieved when people step up, here's looking to a bright future, thank you everyone. When it was announced that the fun day was going to take place the club had two targets. The first was to give something back to the kids and make sure they had a fun day and the second was to have a small raffle with the aim to raise funds to purchase a defibrillator. As it worked out both targets were achieved. The kids played out mini world cups at under 8/9's, 10/11's, 12/13's and of course not to be outdone the academy kicked off proceedings. In between matches the kids had plenty to occupy themselves with, there was a bouncy castle, obstacle course, target shooting, sponge the manager/coach and free slush puppies, popcorn and candy floss. We were blessed with the weather as it was pleasant and warm all day. The mini world cup provided the watching supporters with some great entertainment. In the under 8/9's competition Brazil topped the group with Spain a close second with both teams progressing to the final. Spain turned the tables on Brazil winning the final 4-0. A contender for match of the day had to be the 3rd/4th place playoff between England and Portugal, when they met in the group stages they provided a ten goal thriller with England winning 6-4 and the playoff was no different but this time it was Portugal who came out on top in a nine goal fest with Portugal winning 5-4 in a thrilling encounter. In this group Rep of Ireland finished 5th and Italy were 6th. In the 10/11's competition Brazil topped the group with Italy finishing second. In the final the boys from Brazil came out on top 5-0, the 3rd/4th place playoff was contested by Portugal and the Rep of Ireland with Portugal defeating the Irish 3-0. Spain finished 5th and England were 6th in this competition. Finally it was the turn of the under 12/13's and this turned out to be an evenly contested group with all places still up for grabs going into the last series of group games. As it turned out it was Portugal who topped the group with Spain coming second. They squared off in the final with Spain narrowly winning 2-1 in an exciting encounter. Brazil and Italy finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the group to qualify for the 3rd/4th place playoff which Brazil won 2-0. Rep of Ireland finished 5th and England finished 6th in a very competitive group. Well done and thank you to all the kids who participated in our mini world cup, it was great to see such a large turn out.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 23rd JUNE 2019

We only had two competitive games last week and both games saw the under 12A’s in action. They were two cracking games, first up was a midweek tussle with Arklow United A at Whitegates. In a tight affair the teams shared the points after the game finished 1-1. The away side went in front courtesy of a wicked deflection off a Rovers defender. The lads levelled matters in the second period when Cian Nolan fired home. On Saturday they travelled to Lamberton to take on Arklow Town A and both teams served up a six goal thriller in a match that ended all square at 3-3. Rovers went in front when Zach O’Toole got on the end of a Cian Nolan cross to fire to the back of the net. Disaster struck for Rovers when the home side raced into a 3-1 lead with three unanswered goals. This little team as well as their football ability have spirit and character in abundance and they showed it when they battled back to earn a share of the spoils. First it was Sonny McHale who found the back of the net with a neat finish and then with only seconds to go man of the match Deon Fielding rattled home a free kick to ensure Rovers a share of the spoils in a good all round team performance.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 16th JUNE 2019

There were only two games in the competitive end of things at the weekend, both games saw the under 12B’s in action. Firstly they defeated Greystones United C 5-0 at Whitegates. The lads turned in a clinical performance and an overall excellent team performance which saw them unbeaten in their last six games. Filip Stypula fired home a fantastic hat-trick, his second hat-trick of the season to bring his tally for the campaign to nine. Calum Hodgkinson added a single to make it five for the season with Oscar Finn O’Brien notching his first of the season to complete the scoring. Unfortunately for the lads their unbeaten run came to an end when they lost 3-1 away to Avonmore on Sunday. In a game where the lads could have got something from with a bit of luck, it just didn’t go their way on the day. Jack Neville made it fourteen for the season when he scored the Rovers goal.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 9th JUNE 2019

Action on the playing field was down to the bare minimum at the weekend with only one game been played. The sole team to play were our under 12B’s when they made the trip to Lamberton in Arklow to take on Arklow Town B in the division 2 league. The lads returned with all three points in an excellent team performance which saw them run out 4-1 winners on the day. Jack Neville made it five games on the bounce that he has found the back of the net when he fired home a brace to bring his tally for the season to thirteen. Calum Hodgkinson nabbed a single for his fourth of the campaign while Milli Phelan completed the scoring with her first goal of the season in a fantastic team display.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Noel Keohane late of Mallow and Boherbue, County Cork who sadly passed away recently. Noel was part of some great Arklow Town teams in the 80’s and 90’s that were involved in some great battles with our club. We have fond memories of our tussles with Noel and his teams over the years. He was a true gentleman both on and off the pitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone at Arklow Town at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 2nd JUNE 2019

With the Bank Holiday we had no action on the playing field over the weekend. However we did have three games played during the week. It kicked off on Tuesday night when our 12A’s entertained Greystones United A at Whitegates. The lads turned in a very impressive performance to run out 7-0 winners. Cian Nolan, Finn Dunne, Joe Culleton, Steven Kavanagh, Arthur Curran and Adam O’Brien all hit the back of the net with the seventh goal coming in the form of an own goal. This was an excellent all round team performance from the 12A’s. On Wednesday night the 13A’s cemented their place at the top of the A1 Plate competition when they earned a point in a 1-1 draw away to a very good Avonmore side. The lads found themselves one nil down at the break, the second half saw Rovers create numerous chance and they were rewarded when Daniel Kavanagh scored with an audacious chip from all of thirty five yards to give the lads a well deserved share of the spoils. A special mention for Sean O’Toole who was immense on the night and led his team by example. On Friday night the 16B’s had a bad day at the office in the semi final of the Premier cup when they went down 7-0 to Coolboy Rangers in Celtic Park, Arklow. To say nothing went right for the lads on the night is an understatement, Coolboy were excellent on the night and the lads will be looking to put this result behind them and move on.
