WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 26th MARCH 2017

The senior men went down 2-1 away to Mid Sutton Sportslink, the lads were short of players for one reason or another on the day and great credit has to be given to the players on duty in this game as they gave it one hundred percent. Riain Sweetman Burke nabbed his fifth goal since coming into the side recently.
The under 17’s went down 4-0 at home to Greystones Utd and to say it was a bad day at the office was an under statement as the lads never really got going in this game.
On Thursday night the under 13A’s maintained their assault on all three local competitions when they defeated local neighbours Rathnew under the lights at the Whitegates. Top scorer Jordan Younger nabbed his sixteenth of the season, Callum Gibney made it twelve for the season and Sean O’Meara scored his eleventh in all competitions to send the lads into the semi final with an excellent 3-0 win.
Saturday’s junior action saw the 12B’s continue their excellent run when they made it eight wins on the bounce after defeating last seasons league champions Greystones Utd 2-0 at the Whitegates. Robbie Dover’s charges were excellent and are really on a fantastic run at present. Charlie Phelan fired home his eleventh of the season with Mikey Nolan finding the net for the sixth time of the campaign in what was a great all round team performance. The 14B’s got back to winning ways with a good 2-0 victory over Greystones Utd, the first goal came in the shape of an own goal with a first of the season for Harry Broxsan ensuring all three points were secured for the lads. A very much under strength 15A’s travelled to take on Arklow Town and returned with all three points in a battling performance from every player on duty. Chris Mabuza headed home his third goal of the season to capture an excellent win for the lads.
Sundays action saw the under 13 girls good run come to an end when they went down 7-0 to unbeaten Maynooth Town, the girls gave it their all on the day with Rachel Cox standing out on her return to the team. The 14A’s suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Coolboy Rgrs in what was a closely fought encounter, Samuel Bishop scored his fourth of the season for the lads and were unlucky not to get something from the game. The 14C’s went down 3-1 to Arklow Celtic, the lads can consider themselves a little unlucky not to get something from the game, Adam Shepherd fired home his fourth of the season. Our 16B’s recorded an excellent 5-3 win away to Arklow Town in a thrilling game, Nathan Wynne notched a brace to make it fourteen for the season, Nacho Garcia moved onto eleven for the campaign when he also hit two with a first of the season for David McNabb completing the scoring.
The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday 18th April to Friday 21st April. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm daily in the Whitegates. The cost of the camp is €45, a ball will be given to all participants at the start of the camp and a medal will be presented on the final day. There is also a reduced rate for two or more kids from the same family. Registration forms can be picked up at the Saturday morning academy, from any committee member or alternatively you can download a form on the club website at

Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to thank all the kids from the under 8's, 9's, 10's, 11's and the senior ladies teams who came out in force to represent the club in the St Patricks Day parade. A big thanks goes to Robbie Dover, Mark Kennedy and the junior managers for organising everything. Also thanks to Mandy and the senior ladies who entertained the watching crowd with some of their football skills on the street. Thanks to all the parents who came along to keep an eye on the kids, your support was very much appreciated. Finally a massive thanks to Franny and Rosemary Copeland who bagged all the goodie bags and distributed them to the kids at the end of the parade. Once again thanks to everyone who got involved.
Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Ann Fennelly (Shankill) who sadly passed away recently. Her son in law John Frazer is our current club chairman while her grandson Dylan plays for our 16A's. Our thoughts and prayers are with her daughters Jane and Diane, her brother Patrick, sons in law John and Cormac, her grandchildren Jack, Dylan, Ava, Cian, Sarah, Emma and her extended family and friends at this sad time. May she rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 19th MARCH 2017

The senior men went down narrowly away to Corduff losing 1-0 in a very tight affair. To be honest the lads will feel they left this one behind. The home side went in front from the penalty spot after five minutes and from that point on it was the lads who created numerous good openings but failed to take them. The lads definitely should have got something from the game.
The under 17’s recorded an excellent 2-1 home win over Aungier Celtic. Stuart Cox calmly slotted past the advancing keeper. The away side hit back straight away going up the other end from the restart to level matters. Rovers took control of the game in the second period creating several good chances. From one of those chances Stuart Cox nabbed his second of the game and what proved to be the winner when he lobbed the onrushing keeper. The Rovers defence remained rock solid to shut out the opposition to secure three points against last seasons major 2 champions. Adam Cuddihy stood out for Rovers on the day.
In midweek action our under 12A’s recorded an excellent 3-2 home win over local rivals Rathnew under lights at the Whitegates. In an exciting local derby the lads secured three important points with Sam Greene, Kai Fitzsimons and Oscar Malcolmson hitting their goals.
Saturday's action saw our 11A's record an excellent 2-0 away win over St Anthonys to put them in the semi final of the under 12 premier cup. Brian McCaul gave them the lead with top scorer Charlie Czwalina scoring the insurance goal just before the break in what was a fantastic all round team performance. The 12A’s stormed into the semi final of the premier cup also when they fired eight goals past Carnew without reply. Louis Malcolmson led the way with a fantastic hat-trick, Kai Fitzsimons and Jack Noble nabbed a brace a piece with Nicholas McAllister completing the eight goal haul in a clinical display from the team. Our under 14B's are going through a bad patch at the moment, this time they went down 4-0 away to Roundwood. The lads are just not firing on all cylinders of late and are not reaching the standards they have set for themselves. With a premier shield final approaching in the coming weeks the lads will be hoping to return to their early season form. Our 15B's made their exit from the division one cup when they went down 5-0 to a strong Wolfe Tone side. The lads never really got going in this game.
Sunday’s action saw the under 13A’s keep their assault on all fronts maintained when they saw off Wolfe Tone on a 2-1 scoreline. Willoughby Woods and Jordan Younger netted for the lads as they kept their treble dreams alive. The 13B’s were involved in a seven goal thriller away to Ashford Rovers losing 4-3, Zach Harris, Oran Dempsey and Tim Farrelly hit the lads goals in what was a great advert for football. Our under 15A’s and 16B’s come into direct opposition in the under 15/16 challenge cup. After a tight encounter the 15A’s ran out 2-1 winners. Tom O’Shea and Chris Mabuza scored the 15A’s goals with Nacho Garcia hitting the net for the 16B’s in what was an evenly contested inter club derby.
Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round 5 which will take place on the weekend of Saturday the 1 st of April. There is no LMS competition next weekend due to the international break. Everton’s 4-0 win over Hull saw 46 players book their place in round 5 with Chelsea’s 2-1 win away to Stoke helping 6 players safely through. Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Southampton means 4 more players progress, Man Utd defeated Middlesbrough to send three players through with Crystal Palace and Leicester providing two and one players respectively with a safe spot in round five. Of the players that exited the competition 4 went out after Arsenal lost 3-1 to West Brom and one player made his exit after Sunderland could only manage a 0-0 draw at home to Burnley. Fixtures for round 5 will be sent out next Sunday/Monday the 26th/27th of March. We now have 62 players left standing in the battle for the €500 prize. Good luck to all remaining players and once again thanks to everyone who supported our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.
The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday 18th April to Friday 21st April. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm daily in the Whitegates. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 12th MARCH 2017

Our senior team recorded an excellent victory away to Parkvilla FC on Friday night. The lads made the long journey to Navan looking for a morale boosting result and that's exactly what they got, they claimed all three points against sixth placed Parkvilla winning 5-2. Riain Sweetman Burke impressed for the lads firing home an excellent hat-trick, Maurice Dunne hit his seventh of the season with Mark O'Sullivan nabbing his first of the season to complete the five goal haul and a welcomed three points. This result pulls the lads outside the relegation spots and with this league been so tight a couple of good wins can put the lads back in the promotion hunt. All in all it was a good team performance from the lads and hopefully it will give them something to build on.
The under 17’s started life in Major 1 of the DDSL, having competed in Major 2 prior to Christmas the lads began life in the higher grade with a disappointing 6-2 defeat away to Verona. What was even more disappointing was the lads were level at 2-2 with twenty minutes to go. Patrick O’Keane and Eli Graham nabbed the Rovers goals on the day.
The 15B's went down 5-1 at home to Arklow Town B in the only game on Saturday. The lads never really got going in this game, Nathan Sullivan scored the Rovers consolation goal to bring his tally for the lads to twelve this season.
Sunday’s action saw our 11A’s take a well earned point in a 2-2 draw away to Aughrim Rgrs, Charlie Czwalina fired home his nineteenth of the season to put the lads one up but they were pegged back with Aughrim going 2-1 ahead. The lads showed great character and fought back to level when Liam Burke notched his twelfth of the campaign. The 12B’s maintained their one hundred percent record in the league with an exciting 3-2 away win over Avonmore. Goals from Charlie Phelan and a seventh of the season from Ryan McConnell put them 2-0 up at the break, Avonmore stormed back in the second half to level matters but the lads showed their fighting spirit to hit back when Charlie Phelan claimed his tenth of the season to earn all three points. Our 13A’s earned all three points in a tough encounter away to Aughrim Rgrs, Jordan Younger scored his fourteenth of the season with Tom Hodgkinson firing in his eighth of the campaign to ensure the lads keep ahead of the chasing pack. The under 13B’s went down 6-1 away to Glencormac, Oran Dempsey fired home his fifth goal of the season. Well it was a long time coming but at long last our under 14C’s got their deserved rewards for their sterling efforts over the season, the C’s earned an excellent point when they held the B team to a 1-1 draw. Both the B and C team are competing in the premier grade. Kevin Leonard scored his first of the season for the C’s with Evan Dwyer notching his second of the campaign for the B’s. Our 15A’s recorded a fantastic 1-0 win over Aughrim Rgrs, every single Rovers player gave a hundred percent in achieving this result, Frankie Reynolds was the goal hero when he claimed his second of the season. The 16B’s were unlucky when they went down 2-1 away to Greystones Utd, they at least should have gained a point as they had two efforts cleared off the line and also struck the woodwork. Nathan Sullivan scored their goal in what was a good all round team performance.
The club are running an Easter Camp from Tuesday 18th April to Friday 21st April. It runs from 10 am to 2 pm daily in the Whitegates. The cost of the camp is €45, a ball will be given to all participants at the start of the camp and a medal will be presented on the final day. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 5th MARCH 2017

Well for the second week running mother nature decimated football within the club. We even had less games than last week with all our home matches fallen victims of the heavy rain we had. Of all the games that were scheduled the only game to beat the weather was the under 14A’s match in the quarter final of the under 15 premier cup away to Arklow Town A. The lads recorded an excellent 2-0 win against their older opponents to progress to the semi final. Already assured of their place in the division one shield final at the year above their natural age group the lads are now off to a good start in the premier grade cup with this win. Eoin Doyle nabbed the first to bring his tally to twelve for the season with Adam Farrell notching the second goal for his first of the campaign and a safe passage to the semi final in what was an excellent all round team performance. The lads will now take on the winners of Roundwood and Coolboy Rangers in the semi final.
Our Last Man Standing competition has now reached the fourth round stage. In round three the biggest surprise was the game that was suppose to be the banker bet of the week and unfortunately for 39 players it was hot favourites Man Utd who let them down when they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth who played the whole second half with ten players. West Brom's recent good form tempted 8 players to select the Baggies to see off Crystal Palace but the Eagles ran out 2-0 winners spelling the end of the road for those 8 players. One player went with Burnley but after a five goal thriller the clarets lost out 3-2 to Swansea. Of the teams that helped their supporters through it was Man City who disposed of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light 2-0 to give 24 players a place in round four. Champions Leicester made 18 players happy with a 3-1 victory over Hull to ease their relegation worries and help those 18 players progress to next stage. Swansea's 3-2 win over Burnley saw 6 players move into the fourth round with Stoke providing a safe passage for 4 players after they saw off Middlesbrough 2-0. Tottenham’s 3-2 win at home to Everton meant 3 players were safely through to the next round. Liverpool's return to winning ways when they defeated Arsenal 3-1 saw two players move on to the fourth round with one player progressing on the back of Southampton's exciting 4-3 win over Watford. At the time of going to print 58 players were safely through to round four, while 48 players had made their exit from the competition with 9 players waiting on Chelsea in their game with West Ham on Monday night to see if they could make it through to round four. There was three big name casualties in round three with past champions Jonathan Lewins, James Nolan junior and Hughie Nolan going out of the competition. Other past champions Anthony Earls and Jim Foley have made it through to round four as they look to become the first player to win the competition for a second time. Good luck to all remaining players. There is no Last Man Standing competition this week due to the FA cup and a reduced premiership programme.
Registration forms can be picked up at the Saturday morning academy, from any committee member or alternatively you can download a form on the club website at
www.wicklowrovers.com. Check out club facebook page and club website for more details.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne. The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at the Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.
