WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 25th MARCH 2018

The senior men saw their recent good run in the league come to an end on Saturday evening when they lost 4-3 away to Yellowstone Celtic. The lads went in front on sixteen minutes when Ciaran McGettigan netted. The home side hit back to go 2-1 up but Maurice Dunne levelled five minutes before the break with his tenth of the season. Disaster struck six minutes into the second half when the home team were awarded a penalty, which put them 3-2 in front. With eleven minutes left Yellowstone went 4-2 up to seemingly seal the game but to the lads credit they battled on and with six minutes left on the clock Ciaran McGettigan gave the lads a lifeline with his second of the game and his fifteenth of the campaign to pull it back to 4-3. Unfortunately for the lads they just couldn’t get the equaliser despite creating numerous chances. The result is a setback but they are still very much in the title and promotion mix.
Junior action last week started early with the 12B’s playing under lights on Thursday night when they entertained Avonmore A, the Rathdrum side ran out 2-0 winners but the lads could have snatched something from the game. On Saturday the 12A’s continued their good run since joining the DDSL ranks. Saturday saw them defeat Wayside Celtic in the first round of the Hillary cup winning comprehensively 10-0. Lorcan Sinnott led the way with a splendid haul of four goals to make it five for the campaign. Brian McCaul nabbed his firsts of the DDSL season when he notched a brace, Charlie Czwalina also nabbed a brace to bring his tally to three. Tom Donoghue and Lee Brown scored their firsts of the campaign to round off the scoring in what was a good all round team performance. The 12C’s went down 8-2 away to Greystones Utd A in the first leg of their cup quarter final, the lads were always up against it but never gave up. Ben Doyle and Cian Doyle were on the scoreboard for Rovers. Our 13A’s recorded an excellent 8-0 away win away to Peamount Utd in the first round of the Gerry Murphy cup. Oscar Malcolmson fired home an astonishing five goals in clinical fashion, Darragh Heffernan, Jack Noble and Steven Gormley all added singles in the lads first game in weeks. The 13B’s drew 2-2 away to Greystones, having not played since November the lads showed their rustiness when they fell 2-0 behind early on, they showed great character to battle back to earn a share of the spoils with goals from Peter Dunne and Eoin Cleary. The 14B’s travelled to Coolboy but didn’t have any luck as they were defeated 4-1 with Alexander Gallet getting their lone goal. Our 15A’s maintained their one hundred percent start in the DDSL with a narrow 3-2 win over Phoenix FC in an entertaining encounter. Ross Quinn, Ryan Kavanagh and Dylan Cummins all hit the back of the net to make it four wins from four games for Jerry Lewins men. An understrength 15B’s lost 3-0 away to Arklow Celtic in the second leg of their interim final to lose 5-3 on aggregate. The lads gave it their all on the day but just couldn’t breach a strong Arklow rearguard.
On Sunday the 14A’s went down to a disappointing 7-3 defeat at home to Arklow Celtic in the first leg of their cup quarter final. Jordan Younger, Harry Broxson and Tomas Kennedy netted for Rovers on the day. A big thanks to under 13 players Adam Byrne, Tom Faralley and Charlie Phelan who helped the lads out on the day. Another team who were understrength at the weekend were the under 16’s who were short of seven regulars as they went down to a 5-0 defeat away to Coolboy Rgrs.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 11th MARCH 2018

Well the weather was the big winner at the weekend with the heavy over night rain on Friday putting paid to the majority of our fixtures. Only three games survived the weather and out of the three games we recorded one win, one draw and one defeat.
Our under 17A’s suffered a disappointing heavy 8-1 defeat at home to Arklow United last Friday night at Whitegates. Going into the game without four regulars the lads never got going in the game as the Arklow side clinically put the lads to the sword. Its back to the drawing board now as the lads will look to get back on the winning track next week. Dylan Frazer scored the lone Rovers goal on the night.
On Sunday the under 14B’s started their league campaign with a share of the spoils at home to Coolboy Rangers in a 1-1 draw. The lads will be a little disappointed not to win this game but to Coolboy’s credit they battled to earn themselves a point. Zach Harris registered his second goal of the season when he netted for Rovers. The 15B’s had an excellent 3-2 home win over Arklow Celtic in the first leg of their interim final to leave the tie finely poised going into the second leg. In what was a good advert for football Adam Shepherd fired home a brace to bring his tally to eight for the season with Javier Perez Dirube nabbing a single to double his tally to two for the campaign. This was a fantastic game, well done to both teams on providing exciting entertainment to the watching public.

At the time of going to print we had 39 players safely through to round 5 of our Last Man Standing competition. Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Watford saw 17 players progress, Chelsea’s narrow 2-1 victory over London neighbours Crystal Palace meant a further 10 players went through. Victories for Everton [5], Leicester [4], Newcastle [2] and Tottenham [1] over Brighton, West Brom, Southampton and Bournemouth respectively saw 12 more players safely through to the next stage. As it stands another 9 players will be hoping to join them when their selection Manchester City travel to take on Stoke in the Monday night game. Two players made their exit from the competition at the weekend when their selections West Ham and Huddersfield failed to win, the Hammers losing 3-0 at home to Burnley and Huddersfield only managing a scoreless draw at home to Swansea. There is no Last Man Standing selections required next week due to FA Cup action.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne. The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at the Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate Jennifer Costello and Mark Delaney on the arrival of baby Noah Jacob early on Sunday, we wish you a life full of love, happiness, fun and good health. May the future be good to you. Once again a massive congratulations Jennifer and Mark.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 4th MARCH 2018

Well a complete blank out was the order of the day last weekend, a combination of ‘’The Beast from the East’’ and ‘Storm Emma’’ put paid to all our fixtures. Most of the country was under a blanket of snow due to the storms, conditions only fit for the Winter Olympics. So lets hope the thaw this week doesn’t bring any problems regards flooding and we can get back to playing football.
Our Last Man Standing competition moves onto round four. At the weekend Tottenham’s comfortable 2-0 home win over relegation threatened Huddersfield meant 34 players safely booked their place in round four. Liverpool’s impressive display in their 2-0 win over Newcastle at Anfield saw 4 players progress to the next round. Joining them were the 3 players who selected Watford who duly obliged by beating bottom of the table West Brom 1-0 at Vicarage Road. One player bravely picked Swansea at home to West Ham and they came up trumps when the welsh side hammered the unhappy Hammers by a score of 4-1. Of the players that fell at the third round hurdle Leicester let down 7 players as they failed to make home advantage tell when they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth with the Foxes only levelling matters in the dying seconds of injury time. Disappointing Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat away to Brighton saw another 7 players bite the dust. At the time of going to print we have 42 players definitely through to round four with another 8 players hoping to join them if Manchester United can get the better of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the Monday night live game on Sky. Good luck to all remaining players in the competition and once again a big thanks to everyone who took part in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated.
The registration nights for overdue membership that were scheduled for last Thursday and Friday nights were cancelled due to the bad weather. The nights have now being rescheduled for this Thursday 8th of March and Friday 9th of March in the clubhouse at Whitegates from 7.30pm to 9pm. With the short season now mostly completed club memberships should have been paid up by now.
