WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 31st MARCH 2019
The senior second team recorded a good 1-1 draw away to St Anthonys, the lads led 1-0 through a Luca Rampersaud goal in a game they controlled for large periods. Unfortunately for the lads the Kilcoole side levelled late on. All in all this was a good performance from the lads and probably should have took all three points.
Our under 17’s went down 7-1 to local neighbours Wicklow Town in the Wicklow Youths Shield on Saturday. The majority of the team will play youth football again next season, so this season can be used as a learning curve. They were well in the game for a long time, at 3-1 down they had a great chance to bring the game to 3-2 but the Town broke upfield to score a fourth to kill the game off. Daniel Murphy notched his first goal of the season for the Rovers consolation.
Junior action started on Thursday night when our under 12’s entertained local neighbours Rathnew in the under 13 premier league. The older Rathnew side ran out comfortable 5-0 winners as they dominated proceedings. To the lads credit they kept playing their normal neat football.
Saturday's junior action saw our 13A's go down 2-0 away to Avonmore. It was a closely fought encounter which could have went either way but it was the home side who took their chances. The under 15's made the short spin to Ashford but unfortunately they got nothing from the game losing 2-0. The lads battled right to the final whistle in the hope of getting something from the match but they found the Ashford rearguard a tough nut to crack. The 16B’s played out an eight goal thriller away to Dublin Oak Academy, unfortunately for the lads they came out the wrong side of a 5-3 defeat. There was some excellent football on display from both teams in a highly entertaining game for the supporters. Adam O’Reilly netted a brace with Calum Rawl firing home the third from the penalty spot.
Sunday’s action saw the under 12B’s suffer their first defeat of the season going down 3-2 away to Newtown Juniors in a five goal thriller. There was plenty of good exciting football on show to keep the supporters on the edge of their seats. Filip Stypula netted his fifth of the season with Jack Lambe nabbing his third of the campaign. The 16A’s had a bad day at the office as they lost 5-0 away to Lourdes Celtic, nothing went for the lads on the day.
The club will be running an Easter Soccer Camp, it will take place from Tuesday 23rd of April to Friday 26th April. It will take place at Whitegates and will run daily from 10am to 2pm. Our Last Man Standing competition moves on to round six, after the weekend’s games we definitely have 43 players left standing. Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over relegated Huddersfield saw 18 players through. Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Cardiff saw 15 players through, 5 players progressed after Man Utd beat Watford 2-1 at Old Trafford. A further 4 players gained a safe passage through after their selection Man City easily brushed a side Fulham winning 2-0. A single player made it through after Leicester defeated Bournemouth 2-0. Eight players made their exit from the competition, 4 players went out after Wolves lost 2-0 to Burnley. Brighton’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton meant 3 players went out with a single player falling by the wayside after West Ham lost 2-0 to Everton. At the time of going to print 10 more players will be hoping to progress to join the 43 players already through to round 6 when their selection Arsenal take on Newcastle in the Monday night game.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 24th MARCH 2019

Our senior second team went down 4-0 away to league leaders Avonmore, the lads found themselves 2-0 down at the break. The second half saw the lads come more into the game but it was the home side who added to their tally to run out victors on the day.

Our youth team went down 4-0 at home to Ashford Rovers on Friday night, the scoreline some what flattered the winners as the game was a lot closer than the result suggests. Ashford led 2-0 at the break and that was solely down to the lads standing off their opponents. The second half saw the lads create several chances, the best of them saw Paul Marah rattle the woodwork. The away side killed the game off with a third and then a fourth late on in the game. If the lads can keep up the hard work it should all stand to them as most of the players will be playing youth football again next season.

Saturday’s junior action saw our under 13’s record a good 3-0 win over Greystones Utd in the premier plate, goals from Charlie Czwalina, Eoin Kennedy and Ben Doyle secured all three points, Evan Conyard, Sean O’Toole and Lorcan Sinnott all went close to adding to the tally. Brendan Porter, Sean O’Toole, Mel Early and man of the match Kyle Gormley all came in for a special mention. The 14A’s had a bad day at the office when they went down to a heavy 7-0 defeat away to Marks Celtic, the lads have been very much understrength of late with nothing going for them on and off the pitch. The 14B’s defeated Glencormac 3-0 in the premier league, in what was a fairly even game early in play. Things changed with the arrival of Ruairi Jenkinson from the bench. Ruairi put Rovers one up just before half time and then added a brace in the second period to complete his hat-trick to give the lads all three points. This was a good all round team performance.

Sunday’s junior action saw the 12A’s go down to a narrow 2-1 defeat to Arklow Town A in their first game of the season, in an evenly contested match Arklow just shaded it. Finn Duune was the Rovers goalscorer on the day. The 12B’s made it two wins from two with a 7-1 home victory over St Anthonys B, Filip Stypula led the way with an excellent hat-trick, Jack Neville added a brace with James Dunne and Jack Lambe netting singles in a good all round team performance. Our under 15 girls lost 5-2 to league leaders Leixlip Utd, the girls got off to a bad start when the leaders blitzed them early on to go 5-0 up. To the girls credit they knuckled down and made a game of it. Molly Sweeney pulled one back before the break and in the second half she added a second and her twenty seventh of the season. The girls showed what their made of with an improved second half to put it up to their opponents. Our under 15’s started their premier plate campaign with a 2-2 draw with Arklow Town, Tomas Kennedy netted from the spot with Rory Hannon firing home his second of the season to earn the lads a share of the spoils. The under 16A’s gained their first point of the season with a tough 1-1 draw with Cambridge Boys at Whitegates. The lads have had a tough start to the season but their character can never be questioned as demonstrated by this battling performance. Jordan Younger nabbed his first goal of the season to give the lads a well deserved point.

The club will be running an Easter Soccer Camp, it will take place from Tuesday 23rd of April to Friday 26th April. It will take place at Whitegates and will run daily from 10am to 2pm. The cost of the camp is €50 and is open to boys and girls from the age of 4 years to 13 years. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th MARCH 2019

The senior men’s A team unluckily went down 4-3 away to Ayrfield United in the quarter final of the Wally Wynne cup last Saturday. In a typical cup tie played in conditions more suited to hand gliding both teams served up an exciting encounter. The lads suffered the loss of some key players through injuries and work commitments prior to the game and then lost Jim Foley during the game, add to this Luke Byrne and Paul Newsome carried injuries during the game it was always going to be an uphill task. If there was ever a case of the best team lost this was it with Rovers playing the better football throughout. Even after falling 1-0 behind and 3-1 behind the lads kept playing football, Rikki Quinn drew them level on the first occasion with a thirty five yard blockbuster that swerved numerous times in the wind before sailing into the roof of the net. They then fell 3-1 behind against the run of play but showed great spirit, Ciaran McGettigan was fouled in the area and the resulting spot kick was coolly blasted to the right hand top corner of the net by Ian Brannigan. Davy Rowan levelled matters when he powerfully headed home a Luke Byrne corner, Rovers had several chances to seal the deal but they just couldn’t find the net. It was on to extra time where Ayrfield nabbed the winner on the stroke of half time of extra time. The last chance of note fell to Ian Brannigan but his effort was saved by the keeper. The Rovers rear guard showed their strikers how to do it on the day with the three Rovers goals coming from three defenders. On the day Davy Rowan was man of the match for his all action display winning numerous heading duels and putting in some crunching tackles while also getting his name on the scoresheet. Unlucky on the day lads but all in all it’s been a great season after our league victory, a great first season for the management team of BA and Mattie and their troops, a good basis to build on.

Only one junior game took place at the weekend and that was our under 16B’s who made the trip to Ferndale Park in Arklow to take on Arklow United, unfortunately the lads came home empty handed as they suffered a 2-0 defeat. The lads were well in the game and did have chances to get something from the game but it wasn’t tbe on the day.

The club will be running an Easter Soccer Camp, it will take place from Tuesday 23rd of April to Friday 26th April. It will take place at Whitegates and will run daily from 10am to 2pm. All participants will receive a ball on the first day of the camp. All participants should bring a packed lunch, drink, rain jacket, football boots and shin guards. WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 10th MARCH 2019

Our senior A team travelled to their nearest challengers Ballymun Utd last Saturday knowing a victory would claim the Leinster Senior Saturday Premier title and they duly obliged winning 4-2. The lads fell behind ten minutes before the break but they levelled from the penalty spot, Jim Foley coolly slotted the resulting spotkick home after Ciaran McGettigan was fouled in the area. A minute into the second half the home side went in front but Rovers showed great character to battle back and level again when Tommy Kelly fired home from an Adam Cox corner in the sixty sixth minute. Eleven minutes from time Rovers got their noses in front, an Adam Cox free was spilled by the keeper with Tommy Kelly quickest to react to slot the ball home for his second of the game. The icing on the cake came in the eighty fourth minute when Ciaran McGettigan held off two defenders before sliding the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 4-2 and the celebrations began. The title was heading back to Whitegates. Well done to the squad and the management team of BA Franey and Mattie Byrne. They finish off their league programme with a home game against Ballymun Utd and are also hoping to add the Wally Wynne cup to the league title.

Saturday’s junior action saw our under 13’s kick off life in the premier division grade with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Glencormac, the lads fell two behind but in the second half they showed their battling qualities to pull one back through the impressive Sean O’Toole. Unfortunately the lads lost a couple of players through injury and just found the Glencormac rearguard a tough nut to crack. The 14A’s are still searching for their first win of the season, they went down to a 1-0 defeat away to Templeogue Utd in what was a closely fought game that could have went either way. Our under 15’s never got going in their game at home to Coolboy losing out 5-1. They were 3-0 down at the break and in the second half they came more into it with Ruairi Jenkinson netting the Rovers goal but on the day the lads were just not at the races.

On Sunday the under 12’s lost 5-0 away to Aughrim Rangers in the under 13 premier league, hard that they tried the lads just found their older opponents too strong on the day. Our under 15 girls were away to Portmarnock and in a game that was ruined by the terrible weather conditions a draw was probably a fair outcome. Molly Sweeney with her twenty fifth goal of the season put Rovers one up going into the break. The hosts levelled matters midway through the second half and that’s the way the game ended up. A special mention goes to Jade O’Brien who put in an excellent display at right full.  The under 15A’s lost 3-1 at home to Beechwood, on a cold breezy morning the conditions played havoc with the match, Josh Odlum fired home the Rovers goal as the lads are still finding their feet in the higher grade.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 3rd MARCH 2019

Our senior A team edged even closer to the Saturday premier title when they defeated Esker Celtic 4-0 in Lucan. The lads turned in an excellent team performance in terrible wintery conditions. Rovers went in front when Ciaran McGettigan scored after some good work from Ian Brannigan and Gareth Murphy after twenty seven minutes. The same trio helped provide Rovers with their second goal just before the break with Ciaran McGettigan this time heading home after good work from Ian Brannigan and Gareth Murphy. Ian Brannigan was involved for the third time when he supplied the cross for Gareth Murphy to put Rovers three up. Ciaran McGettigan completed his hat-trick when he got on the end of an Alan Delaney cross to fire home. This leaves the lads three points clear at the top with two games to go and those two games are back to back games with their nearest challengers Ballymun United.

The second team travelled to take on Arklow Celtic on a wet Sunday morning, the lads controlled the game for large periods but they didn’t make their pressure count and then unfortunately they got hit on the counter attack to go one down. The lads pushed forward in search of a leveller but yet again they were hit on the break as Arklow doubled their lead. Rovers did eventually find the net, Jack Crowley struck the post with a well struck shot with Hugh Humby quickest to react to fire home the rebound. Try that they did the lads couldn’t find an equaliser.

Saturday’s junior action saw our 14A’s lose out on a 2-1 scoreline to Leicester Celtic at Whitegates, in a closely fought encounter the lads were unlucky not to get something from the game. Darragh Heffernan netted for Rovers on the day. The 14B’s started their season off with a 1-1 draw away to Arklow Utd, in wind swept Ferndale Park a draw was probably a fair result on the day, Ben Bowen nabbed the Rovers goal.

Sunday’s action saw the 12B’s play their first competitive game and they kicked off with a fantastic 3-2 away win over Arklow Utd, a brace of goals from Calum Hodgkinson and a single from Filip Stypula laid the foundations in what was an excellent all round team performance. The under 15 girls recorded a good 3-1 win over Malahide Utd at Whitegates. Molly Sweeney got the girls off to a great start when she found the back of the net after three minutes with her twenty fourth goal of the campaign, but Malahide hit back to level. Rovers were determined to get all three points and Justine Cronin put them back in front from the penalty spot for het fifteenth goal of the season, they sealed the victory when Leanne O’Neill scored her first goal for the club in the final minutes to run out 3-1 winners. The 16B’s took on Roundwood and this was a game of two halves. Roundwood controlled the first half and raced into a 3-0 lead. The second period belonged to Rovers and two goals from Mike Gleeson nearly completed the comeback but they just fell short as they went down to a 3-2 defeat.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne. The academy takes places on the all weather pitch on the club grounds at Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12.
