WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 24th NOVEMBER 2019

With our Leinster Senior side not in action at the weekend it was left to our Wicklow League side to provide us with the action on the playing field. The lads continued their good run of late with a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at home to Carnew to make it three wins and a draw in their last four games. It was the away side who drew first blood to go 1-0 up, Rovers had their chances but failed to take them and at half time Carnew went in one to the good. Rovers came flying out of the traps in the second half and were on level terms four minutes in. Luca Rampersaud was fouled in the area and a penalty was awarded, up stepped Simon Phillips to tuck the spot kick away for his fourth goal of the season. Rovers were back in it and even though they were reduced to ten men they went in front on the hour mark when Jamie Power found the net with his fifth of the campaign. The away side were then reduced to ten men, Rovers seemed to be heading for their fourth win on the spin but with five minutes remaining Carnew popped up with a leveller.

The weather proved to be the winner at the weekend with the heavy rain causing numerous cancellations. Both youth team’s fixtures away to Wicklow Town and Aughrim Rangers fell foul of the inclement weather. The under 12A’s midweek fixture at home to Ashford Rovers was also cancelled with the under 13’s game away to Glencormac United and the under 16 girls match away to Donnycarney Celtic also victims of the bad weather.

Our Last Man Standing competition came to an end at the weekend, amazingly with 18 players going into round 5 we ended up with a sole winner of the €500 prize. The reason for that was the 9 players who went with Everton went out after Everton lost 2-0 at home to Norwich and the 8 players who plumped with Arsenal also exit the competition after they could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to struggling Southampton. That left the way clear for our 1 remaining player Jonathan Lewins who selected Leicester and the Foxes duly obliged winning 2-0 away to Brighton. Jonathan claims the €500 prize and also becomes Last Man Standing champion for the second time. In round one Jonathan selected Chelsea and they narrowly beat Newcastle at the Bridge winning 1-0, in round two champions Manchester City gave him a smooth passage through with a comfortable 3-0 win. In round three Liverpool with two very late goals against Aston Villa which saw them come from the brink of defeat to win 2-1 and give Jonathan that bit of luck required to get through sometimes. His next selection saw Jonathan go with Manchester United in round four and they obliged with a 3-1 home victory over Brighton. Finally he claimed the title with Leicester at the weekend after they won 2-0 away to Brighton. Congratulations Jonathan on your win and once again a big thanks to everyone who participated in our Last Man Standing competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 17th NOVEMBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior team were away to Major Saturday side Booth Road Celtic in the second round of the Noel Ryan cup last Friday night. The lads claimed the scalp of a team plying their trade four divisions above Rovers in an excellent 2-1 win after extra time. After a scoreless first half the home side went in front ten minutes into the second period. This only seem to spur Rovers on and they levelled matters fifteen minutes from time when Luke Byrne netted. At full time nothing separated the two teams and it was on to extra time. With seconds remaining in the second half of extra time Luke Byrne popped up with his second of the game with what proved to be the winner. This was an excellent all round team performance but Cathal Moody had to be the Rovers man of the match with some fantastic saves at crucial stages of the match which included a penalty save on the half hour mark.

Our Wicklow League side continued their good form of late with their third win on the bounce with an excellent 4-2 away win over local rivals Rathnew. The lads flew out of the traps and were one up early on with a Luca Rampersaud strike. Ian Murphy in the Rovers goal pulled off a couple superb saves to maintain the Rovers lead and then they went up the other end to increase their lead when Simon Philips fired home. It got better for the lads when they added number three after Luca Rampersaud set up Jamie Power who slotted home. Rathnew came storming back in the second period with two quick fire goals to make it 3-2 but the lads put the game to bed when Simon Philips tucked away his second of the game from the penalty spot to ensure Rovers all three points. Ian Murphy comes in for a special mention after several excellent saves in the Rovers goal.

The under 18’s kicked off their season with a good 3-2 win over Aughrim Rangers at Whitegates on Friday night. Dylan Moriarty gave Rovers the lead before the away side levelled. Keane Furlong headed in a Gary Dowling corner to restore the Rovers lead and then it was extended to 3-1 when skipper Paul Marah’s low drive found the net. Aughrim pulled one back with fifteen minutes left and then the lads had to thank keeper Aaron Lynch who made an outstanding save near the end to ensure all three points were staying with Rovers. The under 17’s scheduled away game against Coolboy Rangers was cancelled.

Congratulations to our under 15’s who captured the WDSL division 1 last week. As a result of Arklow Town’s 1-0 victory over Carnew, Rovers were crowned division 1 league champions by a point. On the way to the title the lads recorded back to back victories over Roundwood winning 6-2 away and 3-2 at home. They followed that with a narrow 2-1 win over Arklow Town which was for six points. Another six pointer saw them lose 2-1 to eventual runners up Carnew. But after Carnew’s narrow defeat the title was Whitegates bound. Once again well done to Jason, Brendan, Enda and the under 15 squad on their success.

The club had five teams in finals at the weekend, the under 10 Whites took on Arklow Town and both sides have to be complimented on some fine football in this non competitive match. There was a lot of talent on view in what was a very entertaining game. Congratulations to our under 11 Green team who defeated Ashford Rovers after extra time in a seven goal thriller. This was an exciting encounter, the first period saw Wicklow strike the woodwork on three occasions while the Ashford stopper pulled off three top class saves. The second half and extra time were nip and tuck between two good footballing sides but in the end the lads just shaded it. Congratulations to Darren, Dave and the team on their success. Congratulations to our under 12A’s who picked up the under 12 Premier Jako cup courtesy of a 5-0 win over Ashford Rovers. After a scoreless first half the lads came out all guns blazing in the second half to fire home five goals without reply. Steven Kavanagh led the way with a superb hat-trick with Conor Williams and Sonny McHale registering singles Congratulations to Denis, Enda and the lads on their success. Hard luck to our under 13’s who lost 5-1 to Rathnew in the under 13 Premier Jako cup final, the lads took the lead with a Charlie Czwalina goal but Rathnew hit back shortly after to draw level. Rathnew went 2-1 up just before the break and then Rovers lost their defensive lynch pin Sean O’Toole with a knee injury. In the second half Rathnew added a further three goals to run out 5-1 winners. Well done to Rathnew on their treble success. Hard luck but well done on reaching the final to Trevor, Mark and the lads, the best of luck in your last two league games. Everyone at the club would like to wish Sean O’Toole a speedy recovery from an injury he received in the match.

The under 16 girls gained their first point of the season with a fine 1-1 draw away to Portmarnock FC. The girls started brightly taking the game to their opponents but were unlucky to fall behind against the run of play. The girls lost defender Ava Rawson to injury shortly after but the girls showed great character to battle back to level matters when debutant Sophie Fogarty scored which in the end earned Rovers a deserved point. Everyone at the club would like to wish Ava a speedy recovery from the injury she received in the game.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 10th NOVEMBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior side were away against one of the cup favourites Crumlin United in the third round of the FAI Junior cup on Saturday but unfortunately for the lads they lost out 4-0 to a very strong team. The lads got off to the worst possible start falling 2-0 behind after eight minutes. They showed great character to battle back against one of the big clubs in this competition but just couldn’t find a way past a resolute home defence. Crumlin added a further two goals in the last four minutes with both goals coming from the penalty spot. Rovers will be a bit disappointed with the final result, but it's back to the training ground in a bid to get things ironed out before they travel to take on Booth Road Celtic next Friday night in the Noel Ryan cup.

In the youth section the under 18’s scheduled away game against Arklow Utd was cancelled after the heavy overnight rain. The 17’s started their youth campaign against Avonmore at Whitegates, the lads lost 4-1 but thought their efforts deserved a closer result on the scoreboard. The lads were hit by a whirlwind start from the visitors who raced into a 3-0 lead early in the first period. The lads crept back into the game, first Calum Rawl went close to pulling one back before Sam Brown scored just before the break to give them hope. The lads came out in the second half playing with a lot more confidence and were unlucky not to score when Tom Flood rattled the woodwork. As the lads pushed forward in search of goals they got hit on the break as Avonmore put the game to bed with their fourth and final goal of the game.

Junior action at the weekend saw the under 13’s claim their spot in the Jako Premier cup final when they won a tense exciting semi final away to Avonmore. The lads went in front through a thirteenth goal of the season from Lorcan Sinnott after some great work from Georgie O’Neill ten minutes into the second half. In tough conditions for football both sides have to be commended for playing excellent spells of exciting football in the spirit of a typical cup tie. Both Brendan Porter and Eoin Kennedy struck the woodwork as Rovers searched for the insurance goal. Disaster struck for Rovers five minutes from time when the home side levelled proceedings to send the game into extra time. Extra time couldn’t produce a winner so it was onto the dreaded penalty shootout were Rovers held their nerve to run out 5-4 winners on spot kicks. Lorcan Sinnott, Charlie Czwalina, Eoin Kennedy, Daniel Kavanagh and Sean O’Toole were all successful from the spot to send Rovers through to the final in what was a very impressive team performance. Our under 16 Girls took on Baldoyle United in a second round tie in the O’Neill’s cup at Whitegates on Sunday morning. The girls met a well drilled Baldoyle United team and had some good moments throughout the match but in the end it was Baldoyle who progressed to the next round. The girls showed glimpses of their recent form through out the game but on the day they didn’t have much luck.

The weekend saw round 4 of our Last Man Standing competition take place, going into round four 31 players were harbouring hopes of claiming the €500 prize and of course the bragging rights of been named Last Man Champion. Unfortunately for 13 players it wasn’t to be as they made their exit from the competition. The biggest casualties were the 10 players who pinned their hopes on Tottenham and as has been the case a lot this season they let down their supporters only managing a 1-1 stalemate at home with Sheffield United. In the Friday night game Norwich went down 2-0 at home to Watford resulting with a single player going out. Another player made their exit when their selection Bournemouth lost 2-1 away to Newcastle. One more player failed to make round 5 when their choice West Ham were well beaten by Burnley losing 3-0. There were a happy 18 players who saw their teams come up trumps to book their places in round five. Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Brighton at Old Trafford saw 11 players make it through. An impressive 2-0 win for Leicester over Arsenal helped 4 players ease their way into round five while Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace saw a further 2 players progress to the next round. Finally 1 player completed the line up for round 5 when their selection Wolves saw off neighbours Aston Villa winning 2-1. There is no Last Man Standing competition next weekend due to the international break. Fixtures for round 5 will be sent out to all remaining 18 players next weekend. We wish all remaining 18 players the very best of luck in the remainder of the competition and once again we thank everyone who took part in our competition, your continuous support is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 3rd NOVEMBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior side were to entertain Usher Celtic at Whitegates on Saturday afternoon in the second round of the Tom Carroll cup but the lads were disappointed when the Dublin side were unable to field a team on the day. The lads received a walkover and safe passage to the third round, not the way they would have liked as I’m sure they would have rather won it on the pitch.

Our Wicklow League side made it back to back wins when they beat St Anthonys at Whitegates on Saturday night in a premier league game. On a wet miserable night the lads gained all three points in a fine 4-2 win which sees them move into mid table in the league standings. Jamie Power opened the scoring for Rovers early in the game and it wasn’t long after that they doubled their lead when Luca Rampersaud netted. The lads went in at the break two goals to the good, five minutes into the second half St Anthonys pulled one back but Rovers restored their two goal advantage when Luca Rampersaud scored his third of the season and second of the game with a brave header.  Jamie Power nabbed his second of the game and also his third of the campaign to put Rovers firmly in the driving seat at 4-1. The away side did pull another one back but the Rovers defence held firm to see out an excellent 4-2 victory.

Midweek junior action saw our under 15's take on Carnew in a six pointer game on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the lads they went down narrowly losing 2-1, it now leaves the lads a point clear of Carnew with their programme finished and Carnew with one game remaining away to Arklow Town. In a tight game Rory Hannon was the Rovers goalscorer with his fifth of the season.

The weekend’s junior action saw the under 14’s qualify for the premier shield final when they defeated Greystones Utd 6-2 on Saturday. The lads put in a clinical performance with the whole squad putting in an excellent shift to book their place in the final. Jack Noble led the way with a fantastic hat-trick, Ruairi Jenkinson, Alex Sinnott and Ryan McConnell all added singles. Well done lads. The under 15’s made the journey to Kildare to take on BBC Utd in the third round of the SFAI Sketchers cup. On a pitch more suited to water polo the lads gave it everything, unfortunately it wasn’t to be as they bowed out losing 5-2. The lads started slowly and fell 3-0 behind. They came roaring back with two quick goals from Ben Patterson and Sam Culleton but the home side added two more goals to run out winners. Well done lads on a good cup run.

Our Last Man Standing competition is getting down to the business end now, 31 players are left standing to battle it out for the €500 prize. Of the 31 players remaining, 14 players were a shade lucky to see their selection Liverpool scrape through when they relied on two late goals to see off Aston Villa 2-1. Inform Chelsea won again beating Watford 2-1 to help 5 players into the next round. Manchester City were also late winners when they came from behind with late goals to beat Southampton 2-1 and book a place in round four for 3 players. Brighton beat Norwich 2-0 to see a further 3 players progress while another 3 players made it through on the back of Sheffield United’s fine 3-0 win over Burnley. The early kick off on Sunday saw 3 players move swiftly on to round four when their choice Leicester recorded a good 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace. 14 players made their exit from the competition, Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Wolves saw 6 players go out, another 6 players failed to progress when their selection West Ham lost 3-2 at home to Newcastle. Manchester United’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth meant 2 more players exited the competition. A big thanks to everyone for participating in our competition and the best of luck to all remaining 31 players, your continuous support is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.
