WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 27th OCTOBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior side travelled to Dublin to take on Leinster Junior kingpins and holders Sheriff YC in their own backyard. They faced a mammoth task that was made all the more difficult when the lads were harshly reduced to ten men after nine minutes and a penalty awarded to the hosts which they converted. The lads showed their battling spirit as they produced some of their best football of the season. They took the game to the holders and got their just rewards just before the break when Dylan Orr dispatched a free to the net to level matters. Sheriff went in front when they scored from a corner that was blocked on the line after twenty minutes but the breaking ball was fired home. The lads had chances and as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser they were hit on the break with a couple of minutes left on the clock. The lads can take great credit from their performance in this game and should stand to them and give them plenty of confidence going forward in the season.

Our Wicklow League side gained their first win of the season with a good 5-2 away success over Arklow Town. Alan Power gave Rovers the lead but the Town hit back to make it 1-1. Rovers went into overdrive and added three goals before the break to make it 4-1. They went on to add a fifth before the home side bagged a consolation. In a very impressive performance the Rovers goals came in the shape of a brace from Dean Noble and singles from the impressive Jamie Power, Alan Power and James Lang.

There was only the one junior game during the week and that saw the under 15’s defeat Arklow Town on Thursday night under the lights at Whitegates. In an evenly contested game Rovers edged out the visitors winning 2-1. Tomas Kennedy and James Fagan notched the all important goals in a fine team performance.

Saturday’s junior action saw the 12B’s go down to a 3-1 defeat to Sporting Greystones at Whitegates, the away side proved to be more clinical in front of goal, James Dunne netted his third of the campaign. Both our 13’s and 15’s were in SFAI cup action, the 13’s travelled to take on Portlaoise in the third round of their cup and unfortunately saw their good cup run come to an end in a 3-0 defeat. The lads were understrength and suffered a double injury blow early in play to make their task all the harder. The lads now return to league action were they will be hoping to capture the division 1 title. The under 15’s put in a fantastic all round team performance as they saw off Kilcock Celtic at Whitegates in the second round of their cup. This game eventually kicked off at the fourth time of asking due to cancellations.  Ben Patterson fired home a brace with singles from Tomas Kennedy and Robert Cherry completing their tally in what was a keenly and exciting contest. The lads will now take on BBC United away in the third round.

On Sunday the only competitive game down for decision was our under 14’s away tussle with neighbours Ashford Rovers, after an evenly contested match both sides had to do with a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Both sides will think they could have grabbed all three points but had to be happy with a point a piece. Ryan McConnell and Aaron Murray were the Wicklow marksmen on the day.

Week two of our Last Man Standing competition took place over the weekend, 45 Players progressed to week three in the pursuit of the €500 prize. Manchester City comfortable 3-0 home win over Aston Villa saw 37 players move on in the competition. Leicester’s unbelievable 9-0 away victory over Southampton on Friday night gave 3 players a trouble free passage through to the next stage. Chelsea’s impressive 4-2 away win over Burnley meant another 3 players eased into the next round. Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham and Manchester United’s 3-1 away success over Norwich saw a further 2 players go through. Of the 15 players that made their exit from the competition, 7 players left the competition after Arsenal could only draw 2-2 at home with Crystal Palace, 2 players went out when West Ham could only manage a 1-1 home draw with Sheffield Utd, 2 more players exited the competition when Wolves drew with Newcastle 1-1, a single player each went out when their selections Everton and Burnley lost to Brighton and Chelsea respectively. A 0-0 stalemate between Watford and Bournemouth saw another 2 players go out, one on each team. A big thanks to everyone for participating in our competition and the best of luck to all remaining players, your continuous support is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 20th OCTOBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior team travelled to take on Balbriggan in the third round of the FAI Junior cup and had to go through a nerve racking penalty shootout before progressing to the fourth round. The game went to extra time after normal time ended all square at 2-2. Rovers went in front with a Daniel Tarcevskis goal, but the home side roared back with two goals to go in front. Rovers kept knocking on the door and were rewarded in injury time when Theo Smyth levelled. Extra time failed to separate the sides, so it was on to penalties in which Rovers came out on top winning 5-4 after Ian Brannigan, Adam Cox, Aidan Small, Tom Smullen and Dylan Orr were all successful with their spot kicks.

Our Wicklow League side took on one of the title favourites St Peters on Sunday, this young side gave a good account of themselves despite going down 3-1. In a quiet opening quarter, the game exploded into life when Ian Murphy was called upon in the Rovers goal to pull off two excellent saves. The lads had a couple of half chances to take the lead but were off target. The lads battled well against the more experienced St Peters team and this type of game will stand to the lads in the future. Luca Rampersaud hit the Rovers goal on the day for his first of the season.

Midweek junior action saw our under 15’s record an excellent 3-2 win over Roundwood at Whitegates on Thursday night. This was an exciting encounter as the lads edged out the visitors. Both teams played their part in a thriller, goalscorers for Rovers on the night were Robert Cherry, James Fagan and Rory Hannon in what was a good all round team performance. On Friday night the under 12A’s played out a scoreless draw with Ashford Rovers, the second time this season both these sides couldn’t be separated as their previous encounter ended scoreless as well. Saying that it proved to be an exciting match with both teams going for it, the lads probably had the better chances but the Ashford defence held firm.

Weekend junior action saw the 12B’s go down 2-0 away to local neighbours Rathnew in the A3 shield. The lads had chances to get something from the game, but the home side proved to be more clinical in front of goal. Our under 16 girls went down 6-2 to a strong Lakelands FC team. The girls who lost several players in the close season are in the process of rebuilding under the guidance of Hugh Kennedy and are doing him proud with their commitment and determination. Eve Kelly hit her second goal of the campaign and Rachel Byrne nabbed her first of the season to register the Rovers goal. Abi Smith comes in for a special mention with some outstanding saves in the game.

Our Last Man Standing competition kicked off at the weekend with 113 players going in quest of the €500 prize. Unfortunately for 48 players, they went out at the first hurdle. The biggest casualties were the 27 players who picked Tottenham as they could only draw 1-1 with Watford. Both Bournemouth and Wolves could only manage home draws with Norwich and Southampton respectively meaning we lost another 18 players, nine on each team. Of the players that went through, Chelsea’s narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle saw 30 players progress, Leicester’s 2-1 home win over Burnley saw a further 14 players go through. Manchester City’s 2-0 away win over Crystal Palace helped another 10 players into round two, Aston Villa’s last minute winner in their 2-1 win over Brighton meant 6 players moved on in the competition. With 2 players on Liverpool and 1 player on Manchester United in the big Sunday clash something had to give, in the end the match ended all square at 1-1 meaning all 3 players made their exit. At the time of going to print we have 60 players safely through to week two with 5 players hoping to join them if Arsenal beat Sheffield Utd in the Monday night game. A big thanks to everyone for participating in our competition and the best of luck to all remaining players, your continuous support is very much appreciated by everyone at the club.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 6th OCTOBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior side took a notable scalp for the second week running when they defeated Malahide United in the first round of the Leinster Junior cup. After defeating Wayside Celtic last week in the FAI Junior cup this was an even more impressive win. The lads went in front after thirty five minutes when the impressive Theo Smyth fired them in front. They went in at the break one up and they had keeper Rossa Marron and a stubborn defence of Rikki Quinn, Dave Rowan, Ian Brannigan and Dylan Orr to thank for it, especially two magnificent saves from Rossa in the first fifteen minutes. The lads got a dream start in the second period when two minutes in Aidan Small rifled home number two to put the lads in the driving seat. With fifteen minutes remaining Rossa Marron pulled off a match winning save with an unbelievable one handed save to turn a powerful goal bound shot around the post, definitely a contender for save of the season. The away side piled forward in search of a way back into the match and with two minutes remaining they pulled one back to produce a nervy last few minutes for the lads. To their credit they dug deep and battled hard to see the game out and record a fantastic victory. Rossa Marron earned the man of the match nomination for three magnificent saves with the third save been a real contender for save of the season. Definitely that third save was unbelievable and I think everyone in the ground thought it was a certain goal but Rossa had different ideas.

Our under 13’s also claimed a fantastic win when they made the long journey to Mullingar on Saturday to take on the home side in the second round of the Sketchers SFAI cup. The lads recorded an excellent 3-2 win to make the long journey home that much sweeter. The lads went 2-0 up through goals from Evan Conyard and Daniel Kavanagh. Mullingar hit back to halve the deficit but top scorer Eoin Kennedy notched his seventeenth of the season to restore Rovers two goal cushion. Malahide hit back with a second of their own to make it a nervous last ten minutes of the match. The lads battened down the hatches in atrocious conditions to see out the remainder of the game and progress to the third round. Every single player in the squad played their part in what was the lads most impressive display of the season.

On Sunday the only game to survive the heavy overnight rain was our under 16 girls who travelled to take on Peamount United A in the first round of the MGL Irish Rail cup. The girls despite a 3-0 defeat put in a brave performance against a side who have been together up through the years. Our little side are in the rebuilding process and on the day done themselves and the club proud putting in a sterling display with the final result flattering the hosts. Unlucky girls but better days are surely ahead.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 13th OCTOBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior side kept their win running going when they defeated Hartstown/Huntstown 3-2 in the first round of the Tom Carroll cup at Whitegates last Saturday. The lads dictated the early proceedings of the game but disaster struck on fifteen minutes when the visitors went in front against the run of play. With the lads pushing forward in search of an equaliser they got caught again on the break after twenty two minutes to go 2-0 down. But with the amount of possession and chances the lads had it was only a matter of time before they breached the away defence. On the half hour mark man of the match Aidan Small pulled one back when he coolly slotted past the keeper. Right on the stroke of half time Aidan nabbed his second when he was set clear when Tom Smullen put in a delicate chip over the away rearguard for Aidan to run on to and fire past the advancing keeper. The second half was one way traffic with Rovers piling forward in the search of a winner, numerous chances were created, Gareth Murphy [two], Daniel Tarcevskis [two], Aidan Small [two] and Theo Smyth [two] all had chances to put the game to bed but they found the away keeper a tough nut to crack. Eventually they found a way past the keeper and even then it was at the third attempt, Aidan Small saw his effort saved, Daniel Tarcevskis was quickest to the rebound but his shot was blocked but the incoming Luke Byrne made no mistake as he gleefully fired home to score what proved to be the winner and see Rovers maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

On Saturday our under 14’s played out a scoreless draw with table toppers Aughrim Rangers. As scoreless draws go this proved to a very entertaining match with both sides playing their part in what was a highly entertaining game with plenty of exciting football on display. Both sides gave their all in the search of all three points so a share of the spoils was probably a fair outcome.

The weather was the winner yet again on Sunday with all our games been victims of the heavy rain on Saturday night and into Sunday morning. All games including the SFAI Sketchers cup game featuring our under 15’s and Kilcock Celtic  fell foul of the atrocious weather.
