WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 29th SEPTEMBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior team played two games last week and they produced two stunning performances to grab a couple of impressive wins. First was a Monday night trip to County Meath to take on Ratoath Harps in the league and the lads returned home with all three points after a 3-1 victory. After a scoreless first half the lads took control in the second period when Adam Cox fired in a brace and Ian Brannigan hit a cracker to ensure all three points headed to Wicklow. Up Saturday was a real test for the lads when they took on Wayside Celtic away from home in the second round of the FAI Junior cup. The lads came up trumps again to come away with a very impressive 2-1 victory. In a tight encounter Daniel Tarcevskis nabbed his second of the campaign with Ian Brannigan continuing his impressive scoring run from the left full position when he fired home his third goal in as many games from the penalty spot to see the lads retain their unbeaten start to the season. Next up for the lads is a first round Leinster Junior cup game at home to Malahide United this Saturday.

Our Wicklow League side had a bad day at the office when they came up against a Glencormac United team who were firing on all cylinders. The lads never got into the game and the Kilmac outfit were clinical in front of goal scoring eight to run out 8-1 winners. Stephen Finlay notched the Rovers consolation goal on the day.

Saturday’s junior action saw our under 13’s continue their great start to the division one with a five star performance defeating Aughrim Rangers 5-1. Rovers raced into a 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Danny Kavanagh and Eoin Kennedy, a lead they held to the break. The away side pulled one back seconds into the second period but this only spurred the lads on with Danny Kavanagh adding his second of the game and Lorcan Sinnott firing in a brace to run out convincing winners. The under 14’s progressed to the final of the Premier Jako cup when they saw off Ashford Rovers in the semi final. The game played at Whitegates saw Rovers produce one of their most impressive displays of the season to book their place in the final. Aaron Murray and Charlie Phelan were the team’s marksmen on the day in what was an all round excellent team performance.

Sunday’s competitive action in the junior section was limited to just a single game, our under 12A’s travelled to take on league champions Enniskerry in their own back yard in the semi final of the Premier Jako cup and this young side turned in a spirited display to narrowly win 1-0 in a closely fought encounter to book their place in the decider. Steven Kavanagh popped up to head home what proved to be the all important winner. This was a great team display but a special mention goes to goal hero Steven Kavanagh who ran his socks off and goalkeeper Joseph Jacob who turned in a man of the match performance with some stunning saves.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 22nd SEPTEMBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior side had no game over the weekend but at the time of going to print they were due to play away to Ratoath Harps on Monday night. Our WDFL side were due to play St Peters on Sunday but this game was a victim of the bad weather.

Midweek action in the junior section was confined to our under 12’s, the 12A’s secured a hard earned point away to Arklow Town after their game finished 2-2. The lads were 2-0 down at half time but should great battling qualities to fight back in the second period with goals from Cian Nolan and Sonny McHale to earn a share of the spoils. The game marked the return from injury of Joe Culleton after a lengthy lay off with a broken collarbone, welcome back Joe. The 12B’s went down 2-1 to Ashford Rovers at Whitegates in their A3 shield match. In a closely fought encounter that could have went either way the lads will probably feel they should have took something from the game.

On Saturday the 12B’s put in a battling display away to Avonmore to earn a share of the points after a 0-0 draw. Top scorer Jack Neville turned out in between the posts for Rovers and turned in a magnificent performance to keep a clean sheet. Also Filip Stypula and Sammy Doyle stood out in a very good all round team performance. The under 13’s recorded a good 6-0 away win over Greystones Utd A, Eoin Kennedy led the way with a brace to make it fifteen for the season, Brendan Porter, Evan Conyard, Georgie O’Neill and Charlie Czwalina all added singles to get their division 1 campaign off to the perfect start.

The weather played havoc with Sunday’s fixtures with the heavy overnight rain putting paid to the majority of our games. Only one game escaped the inclement conditions and that was our under 15’s game away to Roundwood and what a performance the lads turned in. The lads raced into a 3-0 lead in the first twenty minutes with an excellent hat-trick from James Fagan, Rory Hannon added a fourth before the home side pulled one back just before the break to leave the score 4-1 in favour of Rovers at half time. Roundwood came flying out of the traps in the second half to score a second but this only spurred Rovers on adding further goals from Luke Dunne and Robert Cherry to run out 6-2 winners.

Yet again we seem to be visiting the problem of managers not texting in their results and goalscorers after their match is completed. When a team within our club don’t see a match snippet in our club notes or on our facebook page this is not down to the person writing up the club notes or posting on the facebook page. It’s because the manager hasn’t bothered to pass on the match details. All you are asked for is the result and goalscorers, no match report is required even though it would be appreciated for our facebook page. In fairness this is only the minority as the majority of managers are sending in results, goalscorers and in some cases match reports. We all know it’s a little harder to send in the information when you lose a match but this shouldn’t be the case. Whether you win, lose or draw the match details should be sent in to your fixtures secretary asap after your game is finished. People are interested in how our teams get on in their games so please forward your match details not just when you win but for every game. This applies to the whole club senior and junior. Unfortunately it’s the same managers week in week out that cause the problem. Please remember we are all volunteers, we have deadlines to meet with the paper and Herald Striker. We cant just keep sitting beside a computer waiting for a manager to reply when contacted for their result so again we request you send in your result and goalscorers asap after the end of your match.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Martin Doyle of Ashford who sadly passed away recently. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Mary Ellen, his sons Martin and Eoin, Daughter Ellen, his brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, nephews. nieces, extended family, friends and neighbours at this sad time. May he rest in peace.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 15th SEPTEMBER 2019

Our Leinster Senior team defeated Colepark Utd in the first round of the Noel Ryan cup winning 2-1. The lads went in front after fifty five minutes with an excellent finish from Daniel Tarcevskis. The lads controlled the majority of the second half and had the chances to put the game to bed. Disaster struck in the first minute of injury time when the away side levelled. With extra time looming man of the match Rikki Quinn surged into the Colepark penalty box and was bundled over. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and up stepped Ian Brannigan who was as cool as a cucumber to blast home to give his team victory.

Our Wicklow League side had a disappointing start to their new season when they lost 4-1 at home to Arklow Celtic. In the first half the lads were caught with two sucker punch goals and try that they did to get back into the game they found a stubborn Arklow defence in no mood to be breached. Arklow added two further goals with the lads eventually getting a consolation goal when Simon Phillips converted from the penalty spot.

On Wednesday night our under 14’s recorded their third stalemate on the spin when they drew with Ashford Rovers. This was top versus second and it lived up to the billing of a top of the table clash. Ashford went in front as early as the third minute, but Wicklow levelled deservingly just before the break with a clinical finish from Charlie Phelan. The lads went 2-1 up with an outstanding solo effort from Ben Bowen but the lads were denied all three points when Ashford equalised in the dying seconds.

On Saturday our under 15B team had an excellent away win in the first round of the SFAI cup when they beat Clane Utd 2-1. The lads were deserved winners and were the better team throughout, Robert Cherry hit a brace in the first half and it was only with five minutes left that the home team scored.

On Sunday the under 15 DDSL team came up against a very strong Raheny United side in the first round of the SFAI cup, on the day the Dublin just had too much fire power for the lads. The lads gave a hundred percent in a tough encounter. Raheny ran out 8-3 winners but Rovers never stopped battling and kept going right up to the final whistle. The Rovers goalscorers were Jake Nally, Steven Gormley and Zander Johnson. The under 16 girls short of a few regulars due to illness put in a brave battling performance in defeat to Maynooth Town. Even though the girls lost 6-1 the final result flattered the away side a little bit. The girls gave a spirited display and with a bit of luck they could have had another couple of goals. Eve Kelly notched their consolation goal on the day.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 8th SEPTEMBER 2019

There was no action on the senior front over the weekend with our Leinster Senior team’s match at home to Ardmore Rovers which was scheduled for Whitegates been cancelled on Friday night on the request of the away team.

Midweek junior action saw the 14B’s share the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Aughrim Rangers at Whitegates on Tuesday night. In a closely fought encounter with no quarter given by either team a point a piece was probably a fair outcome. Charlie Phelan registered his fourth of the season with the all important goal. On Thursday night the 12A’srecorded a good 2-1 home win over a tough Enniskerry team. Zach O’Toole put Rovers in front with his third of the season but the away side came back to level matters. This spurred Rovers on and Cian Nolan with his seventh in all competitions popped up with the winner. On the night Cian Nolan and Deon Fielding stood out for Rovers.

Saturday’s action was limited just to the single game, that was our 12A’s and they took on Ashford Rovers in a local derby. The game ended 0-0 and as scoreless games go this was a highly entertaining affair. Both teams had their chances, the first period belonged to Wicklow with Cian Nolan forcing the Ashford keeper into a good save. The second half saw the home side create the better openings with Joseph Jacob producing an excellent save to keep the game scoreless. Best for the lads on the day were Chris Smit, Deon Fielding and Conor Williams with Zach O’Toole earning the man of the match nomination.

Sunday saw our under 12B's entertain Newtown Juniors at Whitegates and as in previous encounters between these two sides there was no shortage of exciting football and very little between the teams. Both teams produced some excellent football with every player on the field playing their part in a five goal thriller. Newtown ran out 3-2 victors on the day but it was football that was the real winner. Both teams were a credit to their sport in a game that had everything. Milli Phelan hit a brace for Rovers to double her tally for the season to four. Well done to both teams. The under 14's were involved in a six goal thriller in their shield game with Carnew at Whitegates. At the final whistle the teams finished all square at 3-3. This was a very exciting game with both sides giving everything. It was end to end with some tidy football from both sides. The Rovers goals on the day came from Jack Noble who hit his fifteenth of the campaign, Peter Dunne who found the net for the fourth time and Charlie Phelan who registered his fifth of the campaign. Well done to both teams on an excellent game.

WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 1st SEPTEMBER 2019

Our senior first team kicked off their new season with a tricky assignment away to Newbridge Town on Friday night. Missing no less than eight players for various reasons the lads made the journey hoping to kick off the campaign with a positive result. What a game it proved to be with the sides sharing the spoils in an eight goal thriller. The lads would probably have taken a point prior to kick off but will probably feel afterwards that they could have took all three points as they led 2-0 and 3-1 at points of the match. Rovers raced into a 2-0 lead but the home side pulled one back. Rovers restored their two goal advantage to go 3-1 in front. The home side had a purple patch then to fire in three unanswered goals to go 4-3 in front but the Rovers lads showed great character to level matters in injury time to earn a well deserved point. In what was a good all round team performance Gareth Murphy fired in a hat-trick with Davy Rowan nabbing the fourth.

In midweek junior action the under 13A’s defeated Arklow Town 5-0 in the second leg of their premier cup quarter final match winning 11-1 on aggregate. A brace from Charlie Czwalina and singles from Lorcan Sinnott, Daniel Kavanagh and Eoin Kennedy accounted for their goals. The 14B’s got back to winning ways with a 3-1 home win in the league over Greystones Utd, Aaron Murray, Ruairi Jenkinson and Jack Noble hit the back of the net in a very important victory.

The weekend’s junior action saw our 12B’s earn three good points away to Enniskerry. In a keenly contested game the lads ran out 2-1 winners courtesy of goals from Jack Neville’s fifteenth of the season and a second of the campaign from Tom Phelan. The 12A’s playing in the under 13 premier league went down 3-1 away to Arklow Town, the lads played some exciting football controlling the game for large periods and definitely the result flattered the hosts. Steven Kavanagh nabbed the Rovers goal with a beautiful lobbed effort over the keeper. The 15’s went down 5-2 to Glencormac Utd, Rovers bossed the first half going in at the break 2-0 up after Luke Dunne and James Fagan found the net. The visitors came roaring back in the second period to rattle in five goals. Rovers however did have three great chances to make this game a lot closer in the end but unfortunately they didn’t take the chances when presented.

The club’s AGM will be held on Monday night the 9th of September, the venue is the clubhouse at Whitegates and it will kick off at 7.30pm sharp. All members are requested to arrive on time as meeting will start at 7.30pm sharp, thank you.
