Under 12 Shield Group 2
Newtown Juniors 1 Wicklow Rovers U11's 3

Wicklow Rovers U11 A team kicked off the start of their season yesterday morning at a very sunny and warm Newtown Community Grounds. Wicklow Rovers have moved up to play in the U12 league for this season and were very much up for the challenge. The full panel of 15 showed up on the day so the coaches management skills were really tested in making sure all were catered for. The match started at 11.30 at a great pace with both teams showing some early promise but it was Rovers who inflicted the first blow after a number of chances with a good goal scored by Sonny McHale on 11 minutes. Rovers then made their first round of substitutions on 15 minutes with 6 players entering the game. But the changes did nothing to change the tempo of the game with both teams still giving their all. Rovers created  a number of great chances in the second quarter but it was Newtown that got the equaliser on 28 minutes after a cleverly worked corner. The half time whistle blew after an entertaining 30 minutes. Rovers made their second round of substitutes and restarted the game with renewed determination and vigour. They were quickly rewarded for their efforts after 2 minutes when Sonny McHale bagged his second goal after some great build up play. Defensively Rovers were now starting to look quite solid with 3 defenders marshalling the line. The third and final round of substitutions took place on 45 minutes but as before the natural rhythm of the play was not affected. Rovers now playing with the downhill were taking control of the game and had multiple chances to add to the advantage before on the 52 minute Steven Kavanagh completed the scoring after running on to a clever free kick in to space. Newtown pushed to get back in to the game but the Rovers defence remained strong and held out for a much deserved win and 3 points. Notable good performances were had by many but especially Alex Dunne, Deon Fielding, Conor Williams and Steven Kavanagh but man of the match goes to Sonny McHale for a great all round display and two goals.
